Kelly Clarkson mocks the ‘pitchy strippers’ of the VMAs, everybody slams Miley

You know what this whole Miley Cyrus-VMA debacle thing is reminding me of? Kanye West and Taylor Swift in 2009. It’s mostly because there’s an “aftermath” and every celebrity has an opinion about what went down and who is to blame and after about 48 hours, everyone starts getting really hyperbolic and judgy. As I said yesterday (and as it was happening on Sunday), I thought Miley looked and acted like the biggest cracked-out stripper that ever was. Some say she was obviously on drugs, some say she was just high on attention. It was all just embarrassing and gross and people are still talking about it. People like… Kelly Clarkson.

On Monday, Kelly tweeted: “Just saw a couple performances from the VMAs last night. 2 words…#pitchystrippers.” You know what? I kind of love that. Gaga WAS pitchy. Miley was out of tune. Bruno Mars was like the only person who sounded really, really good live. The rest of them were pitchy strippers.

Brooke Shields – who was on Hannah Montana, she played Miley’s mom – was on the Today show yesterday and she had some harsh words too: “I was Hannah Montana’s mother. I do not approve. I just want to know who’s advising her, and why it’s necessary. I mean, the whole finger thing, and the hand…Robin [Thicke] probably at that point was going, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea,’ [Our children] can’t watch that. I feel like it’s a bit desperate.”

There are also some stories going around about Robin Thicke feeling sort of put out about the whole Miley situation. Robin’s mom Gloria Loring told media outlets: “I don’t understand what Miley Cyrus is trying to do. I think she’s misbegotten in this attempt of hers. And I think it was not beneficial. I didn’t get what her point was. It was so over the top as to almost be a parody of itself.”

Also, Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski had some harsh words for Miley too. But keep in mind that right after Mika slammed Miley, she played second fiddle to Joe Scarborough’s ramblings on the joys of voter suppression.

  1. People have every right to critisize Miley’s performance. It was a disgusting, desperate pile of sh*t, and the sooner she realizes that, the sooner we’ll no longer have to see her pathetic attempts at “twerking”, inappropriate oufits and nasty tongue.

    • Jules says:

      You have a long wait.

    • Azurea says:

Au contraire (sigh.) I believe her knowing this will only increase said behaviour.

    • erinS says:

About 5 years ago, I nannied some girls and we went to a Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus combined concert. Half the concert was her performing as Hannah and the other half was her performing as Miley… It was at the peak of the Hannah Montana rage and at the time when that song was on the radio “She’s just being Miley”. She was about 15 or 16 years old and had AMAZING stage presence and performance skills that I’ve rarely seen in a performer. I remember walking away thinking, “Wow, that spark can’t be taught.” The other night? I have no idea what that was. It made me confused, and a little sad because that was definitely not the same sparkling girl that I saw on stage 5 years ago. I still am rooting for her, but damn, she’s making it difficult to defend.

    • Hank Jr! says:

To be fair, she never said who she was referring to in that tweet. She could have meant Bruno Mars or Katie Perry. Just sayin, everyone assumes it is Gaga and Miley because that is exactly what they were doing. #PitchyStrippers

Miley’s friend’s defense is invalid. The MOMENT you have to shade someone with “You fat, you old, you ugly”- is the moment you know you already lost the argument. Idiot.

      • lucy2 says:

I noticed that too – she never said anyone’s name. Maybe Miley might want to wonder why her friend sees “pitchy stripper” and instantly thinks of her? 😀

      • LaurieH says:

By “a coupla performances”, I assumed Kelly was referring to Miley’s solo performance and her duet with Robin Thicke.

    • Kcaia says:

People can do what they want, but I still think it’s immature to do so. Especially in Kellys case, as a singer herself. You just don’t have to belittle your peers just bc everybody else does it or bc you can or have the right. Yeah, it was kind of funny, some of the blogs/articles or even just Mileys performance, but if one more person says they were “embarrassed” for Miley, than proceeds to make fun of her, Im going to pull my hair out! Are we all oblivious now to the things we say and do to each other?

  2. Erinn says:

If you’re going to shade other performers though, I think that you can’t complain if someone shades you later.

    • Dannielle says:

+1 You know, I’ve loved Kelly since 2002. I voted for her on Idol. She’s still my favorite “pop” vocalist on the scene. But…I’m not sure Kelly should be calling out try-hards, when this whole 10-year-search-to-find-a-MAN! has been embarrassingly try-hard for her. She’s gotten so desperate over the years to be with someone that she finally settled down with a douche canoe who has 2 kids, is divorced, and rolled his eyes at her at the Grammys. I HATE how desperate she is. She’s demeaning herself with that crap. She’s better than that but won’t act like it.

Case in point–the story goes that Blake Shelton, who her fiancé manages, told Brandon that he, “Needed to get his head out of his ass and ask that girl to marry you.” Did you catch that? Blake TOLD him to propose. Between pressure from Kelly, and his biggest client, he caved and proposed. How romantic.

No, you can’t *make* anyone do something they don’t want to do, but you can sure influence the crap out of it. I wouldn’t want THAT to be my engagement story, is all I’m saying.

However, she and her gorgeous voice were spot on in their assessment of pitchy strippers.

      • Diana says:

I don’t think it’s fair to judge the circumstances around her engagement. If she is happy… Let her be.

      • Steph says:

I don’t think her trying hard for a husband is equal in any way to Miley’s shenanigans.

      • Gia says:

Whoa…umm, that is a lot of shade. I don’t think it’s fair to critisize someone for wanting to find a partner in life. And who cares if he has kids already?

      • Mourning the Death of Music says:

You cannot compare someone’s personal life and relationships to another’s lack of talent and poor performance choices.

      • Dannielle says:

Gah, shade. I hate that term. Where in my statement did it get lost that I’ve been a career-long fan of Kelly’s? I adore her. I’m concerned that a relationship choice she’s making might be selling herself short. If she doesn’t think so, then who cares? Good for her. But this is a gossip site, and I was venturing my opinion.

Nope, you cannot compare a less than wistful engagement to complete tryharding on stage. And I wasn’t. I was just speaking of Kelly.

But you know, that whole “If she’s happy, let her be” thing could *just* as easily apply to Miley. Why doesn’t it? Could it be because: 1. We LIKE Kelly, and hate Miley? And 2. It’s a gossip site, and we can say whatever we want. Which is the freedom I just exercised as well.

I own every Kelly Clarkson album out, and will buy any future releases. I support her with my dollars and will continue to do so.

    • emmie_a says:

Sure, maybe if you have the mentality of a two year old.

It would have been fine to throw shade Kelly’s way if they said something about her talent. That would have been even playing ground. But they had nothing to say so they went for her weight? Oh how mature.

      • Erinn says:

I didn’t mean it in the case that Miley’s friend made comments on it. I mean for another artist to shade you. The friend’s comments were completely off base.

  3. dreaboo says:

the daily mail hasa story of Miley’s bff insulting Kelly clarkson

    • Tapioca says:

To my everlasting shame I read that article.

Apparently if you’re fat and 30, your opinions are invalid. That, or Miley hangs out with a lot of people as immature as she is, with a distinct lack of imagination when it comes to childish name-calling.

After all, her singing was sub-par and she did take almost all her clothes off – “pitchy stripper” is a technically accurate description of her perfomance!

      • Lindy79 says:

My guess is exactly that, her friends/family and the people surrounding her etc. are as bad as she is, which is how she is the way she is.

To be honest, “pitchy stripper” is 100% accurate. Her act was more about sticking her tongue out, bending over, touching herself and flailing, all while wearing barely anything, the singing and quality of the performance seemed to be secondary to her.

      • V4Real says:

Basically she did on stage all the things that Madonna has done throughout her career. I think she’s lost and she needs the right people behind her to help her find her true place in this entertainment field. What worked for Madonna is not going to work for her.

      • cs says:

        @Vreal
I normally agree with you on most postings. But, I never felt embarrassed for Madonna but, I do for Miley.
She wasn’t sexy, her attire wasn’t sexy and she sounded like shite.
I’m sorry but Rihanna does raunchy much better. Who I think was high off of weed during the whole show. She and her bestie Melissa had that same glazed look during every performance.

  4. bammer says:

the inevitable backlash against the backlash is coming. Poor lil Miley, people are bullying her. People are just doing this because she’s a woman. Blah, blah, blah. Funnily enough her BFF called Kelly fat and 30 as a defense for the no talent brat.

    • Steph says:

I hate that people are bringing up age and weight in this. I am 29, a size 16 and let me tell you that I have no problems with her being practically naked and shaking her ass in the air IF she did it well and in an entertaining way. But she didn’t and she didn’t even sing well which is why people are hating on it.

  5. MeowuiRose says:

I’m glad people are calling out her incredibly immature and gross behavior. This isn’t her just being young and experimenting. It was her begging for attention and approval.

    • Amelia says:

      +1
Although I’m guessing Pitchy Strippers aren’t usually the kind of people who listen to decent advice and instead continue on their way to an implosion of some sort.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Sadly, I agree. I wish she would realize that her performance made people cringe because it was terrible, but she’ll probably think it pushed the edgy edge of edginess or something and people just don’t understand it. Ugh, it was hard to watch.

      • Isa says:

I know, I’m sick of people saying she’s being herself.
I think she’s being whatever she can to get attention and I don’t think that she’s being herself.
I don’t think she even knows who she is.

  6. Nola says:

I didn’t like Miley’s performance any more than the next person but I’m not feeling all the commentary on her sexuality. Why is it that when a Woman shows confidence in sex she’s either a slut or mentally ill? Far too many people used those two descriptions for Miley’s VMAs performance.

Honestly the most offensive thing about the performance was how embarrassing it was. Her Try was on another level. I don’t understand why she doesn’t just want to be True to herself and make music that’s fits her.
Katy perry is still number one bc she works within a brand and image that is an actual extension of who she is. The Katy of “I kissed a girl” isn’t too different from “roar” Katy.
That really can’t be said for Miley. For the last couple of years she’s been chasing trends. She needs to just do Miley.

    • MeowuiRose says:

I mostly agree with you but I don’t think she was being confident with her sexuality. If anything her behavior showed how low her self esteem is. I don’t think touching yourself, the crotch of a married man and “backing it up” on him shows any kind of confidence. I think you have to have some respect for yourself to be confident and she doesn’t seem to have any.

    • blue marie says:

I don’t think she has any idea who she is, she’s just trying to stay relevant. The chasing trends is turning into cliches, and bad ones at that..

    • Lindy79 says:

I’ve thought a lot about this, and I think my main problem is that, unlike Madonna and even Britney when she was at her peak, it was all about women owning their sexuality and not apologising for it but also them showcasing their talent, by putting on a professional show and showing the world what strong female singers/entertainers can do. This was not that, it was a cheap, nasty attempt to shock by what I see to be an extremely immature and idiotic girl with little or no actual message or even thought behind it and practically no talent.

Madonna’s sexuality was all about women being in control, not bending over and rubbing yourself in the crotch of a man. Miley sums up the problem with young girls today, it’s how they think sexy *looks* “flash it all and show the boys what you’re willing to do”

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Well said. There was nothing confident to sexy or empowering about this performance. It was just stupid.

      • doofus says:

        DEF well said.

      • Gia says:

There’s also the fact that Madonna was in her 30’s when she went full sex on us. The book, the erotica era. Miley is a little girl who unfortunately thinks acting like a tweeked out stripper is being grown up. All young women go through this phaze, but many of us are fortunate to have adults in our lives who have our best interests at heart and try to guide us in a different direction.

      • Thiajoka says:

So, as long as the woman owning her sexuality doesn’t do anything overtly sexual like actually touching a man then we’re good? LOL.

I honestly don’t have a dog in this–I suspect Miley is going to cringe about this in a few years or less, but I still think it’s been blown out of proportion.

      • Linet says:

Did someone just say that Britneys over-sexed Lolita act was empowered? Like really?

      • Danskins says:

+1…Madonna owns her sexuality and would never “back it up” to some married man on stage…she owned the stage and wouldn’t need to share it with another singer.

Unlike Madonna, Miley is a mere copycat with no orginal idea of how to express and own herself through her music other than latching onto whatever is the latest trend. She’s not “just being Miley”; she has no idea who she is right now which is pathetic.

      • blaize says:

I think Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Pink, and a few other stars embraced their sexuality and were about empowerment, but that’s not how Miley’s lame performance came off. She just came off as happily trying to generate controversy.

But I do agree that the slut-shaming and pearl-clutching over this is silly, over the top, and in some ways problematic- including the way that people are playing the ‘crazy’ card and the sexual trauma card. Taboo dance moves and a bikini on stage should not be generating that kind of reaction in 2013.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Interestingly MC looks like Madonna – and not the one from the borderline like a virgin days, the modern day madonna (with Gwen Stefani’s No doubt ‘do)

    • Faye says:

I think there’s a vast difference between being sexually confident and being an exhibitionist. Someone who’s truly confident in anything generally does not feel the need to show it off to everyone. Miley reminded me of those studies I’ve read documenting how many strippers and sex workers have a history of sexual abuse or trauma. There is nothing sexy about her antics; they scream “look at me!”in a way that is cringeworthy and anything but confident.

    • Lucrezia says:

I agree with MeowuiRose: for all the sexual moves, she didn’t come off sexually confident.

I read a critique by some random dancer, saying it came off unsexy because her dancing wasn’t fluid – too disjointed and jerky. That made sense to me. It’s not that the moves were even particularly risque, it’s that there was just something awkward about it – like watching a group of 7yr olds “dancing sexy”. Part of you goes “ew, ick!” I think people are searching for something to explain the “ick!” reaction, and coming up with crazy/slut, when really the better comparison is to an awkward, try-hard Lolita.

I’ve never seen Hannah Montana, so I’m not making the mistake of thinking she’s still a child because of some character she played. It’s something specific about the performance. (The giant stuffed pedobear things and the mickey mouse corset probably weren’t helping.)

      • lisa says:

she “dances” like she cant hear the music. girl has no rhythm. it makes her efforts look really awkward.

      • Gretchen says:

        @Lucrezia totally agree.

I don’t get at all how her performance was empowering or owning her sexuality. Owning your sexuality does not mean you have to present yourself as constantly sexually available. And there is a big difference between owning ones own sexuality (which can be done in hot pants, jeans or pjs) and delivering the “male gaze” version of pornified sexuality.

It was like she was unwittingly parodying the increasingly overt sexuality that is mainstreaming due to the wider social acceptance and visibility of sexual objectification, except instead of knowingly mocking it or making it her own, she was completely submitting to it and playing into it like a child might.

Oh and my mortification peaked when she motorboated the dancer’s butt…this fetishization of a black woman’s butt, and Miley ‘playing’ with it just made me think of the Hottentot Venus. Not Good.

Unfortunately, I think Miley is at the point where ‘no publicity is bad publicity’, and she will spend exactly 0 seconds reflecting on the (some very valid) criticism.

      • Danskins says:

        @Gretchen,

I agree re: the fetishitization of the black female dancer and found myself especially uncomfortable during that part of the performance. It was a subtle throwback to the whole humiliating ‘Hottentot Venus’ act from Sarah Baartman (sp) from back in the day that still makes fetishisizing black women’s behinds still an acceptable thing today.

Just another reason to dislike that whole painfully unwatchable performance.

    • CF says:

I have no problem with a woman showing her sexuality, and no problem with that being an aggressive sexuality. this was crude for the sake of crude.

    • Aud says:

      That’s not confidence, that’s desperation.
I wonder what you’d think if a 6 year old girl copied Miley’s ‘moves’?

    • mkyarwood says:

I am not sure she’s that confident in her sexuality. She seems to be playing a part while she figures it out, but my main issue is that these are the only in your face role models kids have. Sex is great and feeling sexy is awesome, but that’s not all we’re about and I think that message has been lost somewhere.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Owning your sexuality and acting like a stripper are not same things. I do not know any successful male artist who perform in their underwear and do stripper moves. You can be sexy without being ridiculous and you do not need to always to be seen as sexy. It bothers me much more when somebody like Taylor Swift or Zooey Dechaniel are criticized or looking too girly because a woman must try always look sexy and not beautiful. Miley is so over the top that is not even owning your sexuality, is just part of her marketing to be seen as edgy and she genuinely not realizing that you can be cool and famous without doing that since everybody is. Like Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce etc. And they were not as bad as she was but there she gets these ideas from since they are all praised for being sexual so she wants just that.

      • KatieD says:

Yes, thank you! It’s okay to be a lady and have some mystery about yourself- I find that a lot sexier than constantly letting it all hang out!

    • Chloeee says:

I didn’t look at it as slutty it was much too distracting to be provocative. And I’m all for owning your sexuality. It she didn’t own anything. There was no womanly allure there. It was like watching a child up there. No
Shade on her body but her lack of grasp on anything really made it extra
      Juvenile.

    • holly hobby says:

I personally don’t care about her sexual liberation or what not. If you want to do whatever in private, go ahead more power to you. However, that whole public display makes me nauseous. If I wanted to watch soft core porn, I’d rent a dvd. I do not want to see that “performance.”

    • LaurieH says:

I am sorry, but that was NOT showing confidence in sex. It was not being a “woman”, it was not some kind of feminist empowerment moment, or art or any other excuse you want to make for it. I have plenty of confidence in sex – doesn’t mean I’m going to give my fiance a hand job in the frozen food section. It was a lost little girl with raging hormones and a heapin’ spoonful of stupidity gratuitously debasing herself by parading around in rubber underwear on stage like she’s auditioning for a thug porn flick while reducing herself into a herky-jerky collection of sex holes. I can not imagine any woman thinks this somehow has advanced the cause of women. Seriously. Good gawd.

    • Lauren says:

Why is that type of behavior interpreted as confidence in sexuality? The whole performance reeked of desperation. If anything, it suggests a lack of confidence. Her music is crap so she has to resort to these kind of stunts.

  7. Keats says:

Since when have the VMAs been appropriate for children?

    • Andrew says:

Exactly. I mean don’t get me wrong, Miley should be called out for how horrible the performance was. But why are parents up in a humongous outrage? What did they expect to see from a show about music that glorifies sex, drugs, and everything associated with it (I’m not trying to say its all bad, I enjoy much of it myself). Again, Miley deserves blame for such a nasty performance, but I’m not going to bash it only because it’s inappropriate for children. Most of the VMAs every year have been in appropriate for children. Anyway, I love Kelly Clarkson and good for her for calling it out. I mean, Kelly can actually sing so she has a right to her opinion 😛

      • Sisi says:

Exactly. What did parents expect to see from a Blurred Lines performance, since everyone knows what the vid was like.

      • Anoni Mus says:

I think in this case the problem lies in the fact that Miley brings with her a whole tween audience who are fans of the Hannah Montana show. My daughter is one of those and I really don’t know how to explain to her the behavior of her former idol.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I think that’s the problem with all those pop music awards shows. Children are the ones who are listening to this kind of music and voting for those crappy winners but the “artists” are usually behaving like the target audience were a bunch of horny men. Who listens to One Direction, Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez if not mostly girls between the age of 10 and 17? The adults are now watching clips and discussing VMA’s only because of Miley, so huge success for MTV.

  8. Eli says:

I was not offended by the performance. I just felt bad for her. The whole thing was sad. She is so desperate for attention that she is willing to make a complete fool of herself to get it. It was not the the least bit sexy or cool, it was just pathetic. Britney’s VMA performance was sexy, Madonna singing ‘Like a Virgin’ was sexy, but this… was a cry for help. I think she’s going to end up like Amanda Bynes if she’s not careful.

    • Nessa says:

I totally agree. I was dying of secondhand embarrassment while watching Miley’s performance. Like, I was literally mortified for her.

      • MonicaQ says:

So much fremdschämen (severe second hand embarrassment). I actually turned off the VMAs afterwards because I was like, “K, enough of that.” Also pre-season football was on.

    • Beatrice says:

I agree. Her performance was cringeworthy and absolutely embarassing.

  9. Lucy2 says:

I finally watched a clip- beyond awful. Now I see why she’s trying all the desperate skanky stuff- she can’t sing or dance at all.
Kelly has more talent in her pinky than Miley or her friends ever will. And they know it.

  10. Anna says:

Wait, Robin Thicke might have been concerned that this was inappropriate for children? It was imagery straight out of his own video, the censored kind!

    • lamamu says:

Robin Thicke’s reactions interests me too. It reminds me of the way Justin Timberlake distanced himself from Janet Jackson after that Super Bowl debacle and let her take all of the blame. NOT in any way defending MC’s ridiculosity, but there were two on the stage.

    • Becky1 says:

Robin Thicke knew what he was getting into. He’s a 36 year old man who sings raunched out songs. I hate the fact that he’s been given a pass on this. He was obviously to some degree a willing participant. It’s really odd that his mother felt the need to comment.

  11. Belle Epoch says:

Does anybody remember when Miley said a Star does not take her clothes off? (The quote is here in Celebitchy.) I agree she is headed for Amanda Bynes territory.

    • Jessiebes says:

Yes I do, I have no words. Except that the YouTube vids of Miley in her back garden singing covers of country, fully clothed, are more beautiful, charismatic and sexy than what she did on the vma’s.

    • Bodhi says:

Amanda Bynes is truly mentally ill. Miley is not

  12. truthSF says:

Did watching that train wreck make anyone else google Britney’ s 2000-2001 VMA performances.

While Britney’s performance might’ve been risque to some, it was still sexy and entertaining.

    • LB says:

Yep I definitely looked those up. Despite the lip syncing and the need to prove she was a grown up, I think Britney did it in the right way. Her dancing was amazing and exhibited the sexiness she was attempting. That’s not what Miley’s performance was doing at all.

I mostly feel bad at her sad attempt.

    • ahoyhoy says:

I JUST compared them to my BF yesterday….my point was, at least you could tell Brit CAN dance, and she had a good excuse for mucking it up that one night. Miley made what we called then a ‘trainwreck’ performance of Brit’s look like great dancing in comparison.

  13. Rose says:

‘Misbegotten’ is an amazing word! I’m going to try to use it everyday somehow if I can!

  14. Scal says:

Frankly it was the blatant racism in the performance that bothered me more than the ‘sexiness’. Her backup dancers as teddy bears? The complete ‘I’m acting black’ schtick? It was like a minstrel show for pete’s sake.

She’s disgusting and all of her apologists saying ‘she’s just a child’ need to sit down.

    • Lucrezia says:

I’m not American. So I’m sitting here with my head tilted in confusion, wondering what on earth is racist about teddy bears.

Obviously I’m missing something, can you (or anyone) explain?

(I do understand the general ratchet thing and appropriation of black culture. I’m just confused about the teddy bears.)

      • L says:

I’m thinking it’s about her use of all black women as literal props (they were teddy bears on stage) It came off as look at the black people as my toys.

There are some excellent blog posts that I think explain the racism better than @scal did. But yea, that was the part that bothered me as well. This is a person who was quoted as wanting music and a style that was “more black” and this is apparently what that means to her.

        http://networkedblogs.com/OspZ4

      • Lucrezia says:

        Ah, thank you L!

I thought we were talking about ALL the bears, and the full-body costumed ones could’ve been worn by anyone. I hadn’t really paid attention to the 3 (4?) headdress-only bears. With minimal attention, all the red lights, and the freaking bears on their heads, I honestly couldn’t have told you whether the head-dress women were white, black or polka-dotted. (On re-watching, yeah, they’re all black.)

Now I see what Scal meant.

      • Mourning the Death of Music says:

My confusion is that I thought those back up dancers were more from (or pertaining to) Robin Thicke’s video, Give It to U.

      • Sisi says:

        @ L

        Thanks for the link

    • Sisi says:

Honestly the entire show was quite white (and mostly male). I miss the good old days with En Vogue, TLC and Destiny’s Child 🙁

      • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Yes, to TLC and En Vogue, and they also had “fun” with their music as well as talent in their genre’s. What’s missing from much of today’s pop is just the unaffected fun element; everyone’s trying to be hard, sexy, edgy and it comes off as forced and unfun, at least to me.

      • Sisi says:

        @ TheOneAndOnlyOnly

and they sang about interesting subjects like self worth, confidence, and actual empowerment.

    • Jessiebes says:

Yes I noticed that too, using black females as props.

  15. Jennifer says:

I’ve always liked Kelly Clarkson and her spot-on comment is just another reason to like her.

  16. Feebee says:

Pitchystrippers. Ouch, the truth hurts. And the response was fat and 30? Zing! Not.

Please don’t compare this mess of a woman to Amanda Bynes. It’s not fair to Amanda Bynes who is a talented young actress who (whom?) it would appear has a mental condition that needs medical intervention.

Miley Cyrus’s talent is barely discernible and from what I can see doesn’t have mental health issues at this point.

  17. GiGi says:

I didn’t think Miley was overly lewd for an MTV awards show. I do think that her “act” lacked any performance value whatsoever. No actual dancing, no actual singing. Just flailing giraffing. What she does is NOT twerking… like, at all.

In fact, the ladies who were dancing immediately after (with 2 chains(z)?) Were also scantily clad and suggestive. But they were actually dancing! Performing! If Miley Cyrus had come out and rocked it people still might be “shocked” but she would be more respected, IMO.

    • JGL says:

      @GiGi
      Thank you.
I was having trouble putting this exact thoughts into words.
This was not more scandalous than antics of say Britney or Rihanna or Madonna but they had a performance – a song and dance that made the whole thing look edgy instead of vulgar.
I mean, Robin Thicke’s original unrated version of ‘Blurred Lines’ was far less cringeworthy than this performance despite the lyrics and half-naked models

  18. pao la says:

I thought she was a firm believer of ‘if you’re talented you don’t need to show your ass and tits’ I guess me and Miley agree on this one, she has no talent so she needs to show some flash and act like a slut to stay in the limelight.

  19. Aud says:

Miley has taken a few steps down the downward spiral.
But Loring too has to face up to the fact that the lyrics in her son’s song are the lyrics of a stalker/rapist/sleaze.
Blurred Lines is, as some British columnists have described it, a song with ‘rapey’ lyrics.
It’s disturbing to think that kids will listen to this song.

    • StormsMama says:

Yeah and how rich of Brooke shields to throw shade when she was naked at what 12? And modeling Her Calvin’s sans undies at what 15?
      Please.
Women bashing a 20 year old bc she was over the top and misguided is weak.
But Miley is an easy target.
How bout pairing her with Robin? A guy almost twice her age singing about a rapey situation (with naked chicks in his video).
      Please.
The phony hysteria over Miley…it’s just too easy.
And sorry Kelly clarkson but you of all people should be shedding light on the hypocrisy bc 1) a few years ago you were HELLA PITCHY on the vmas and 2) you know the body issues young women have. How are you helping?
Buncha bitches being bitches ain’t helping women ill say that.

      • Lauren says:

Is calling Kelly fat in response helping those things you mentioned?

      • Aud says:

How is Brooke Shields relevant here? yeah you have a point, not only was she in the Calvin Klein ad, but don’t forget she starred in Pretty Baby and appeared in Penthouse when she was ten, thanks to her greedy stage mother. So no, she isn’t one to talk, but when Brooke did those things, you could say she was misguided, because her mother ruled her life and was her manager as well. But you can’t say the same about Miley.

But this isn’t about Brooke. Let’s just take the evidence of Miley all on her own on stage playing it up like a ten dollar hooker.
And she isn’t the only one, but you can’t say that she is – at 20 – a misguided individual. She is an adult and she is also aware that the viewing audience is not age restricted either.
By saying that this is not a big deal, you’re basically saying that it’s okay for a ten year old to view Miley on that stage.

  20. Mo says:

It’s the difference between a $2 stripper and a burlesque dancer. Both are meant to be sexy and provocative, but only one comes away with also having class. That is why people are disgusted with Miley. Zero class. Also, that Pedobear stuff is disgusting. It’s like basement level pervy shit – NOT HOT.

  21. Cazzee says:

This article pretty much sums it up for me:

“Miley Cyrus at the VMAs: a six-minute guide to the prejudices of the entertainment industry…

“From Miley grinding Robin Thicke to smacking her backing dancer’s buttocks, the VMAs showed that, once again, white men run the show, black men play support, all the women get mostly naked, and black women get to hold up the bottom of the objectification pile.”

    http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/2013/08/miley-cyrus-vmas-six-minute-guide-prejudices-entertainment-industry?ico=debate^editors_choice

The whole thing was dreary, embarrassing, and completely predictable.

  22. Jayna says:

Again, you can ignore a lot in a performance if the person can sing. When you are all over the stage acting the fool, and you are literally singing flat and pitchy the whole time, it’s like watching someone in a bar going up on stage and performing as a joke. Her vocals were awful and her voice sounded not only off-key, but her tone was grating. It makes me mad that people are ignoring that aspect of it and focusing on just her grinding and such, because guess what, she got what she wanted people talking about that and not how horrible she is as a singer, and her music is now shooting up the charts.

She is so pleased with herself that she is the talk of the VMAs. Poor Gaga, I haven’t heard anyone talk about her, and the girl was walking around with her ass hanging out even after the performance in her
G string in the audience and no one even cares. Gaga doesn’t seem to be generating the kind of interest she used to.

The only one Miley didn’t upstage is Justin Timberlake in the press, because people loved his performance.

  23. SamiHami says:

She’s probably laughing at everyone. People are talking about her and that’s what it’s all about, right? As much criticism as she’s receiving this is only going to be good for her career in the long run.

    • lady mary. says:

and this is the truth !this is very reason why she hangs that tongue, so that ppl talk abt her ,and will rmbr her as one of the most horrible performances in vmas ,i guess one the biggest cliches in this industry is that one should nvr be forgotten ,be that in a good or horrible way

      • Isa says:

Well it’s only fair because everyone is laughing at her. I’ve seen better memes in the past two days than I’ve seen in months!

    • Chloeee says:

She’s laughing now but she won’t be eventually. I’ve heard her sing
Lilac Wine. When she tries to get back like that she will realize it too late. You can’t go back to that after this mess.

  24. Itwillrain says:

I don’t care how bad Miley’s performance was–what Kelly tweeted was unnecessarily cruel and completely out of line. It was unprofessional to voice her opinion in such a negative way about a fellow artist. I’m actually shocked she stooped so low. She deserves whatever backlash she gets for it.

    • LahdidahBaby says:

I tend to agree with you. I’ve always liked Kelly, but gotta say, I think she lowered herself when she did that.

    • Dannielle says:

YES. There we go. I agree. It inadvertently makes Kelly look bad, to randomly address colleagues as “strippers”. She opened that can of worms, and it’s unfortunate, because things like this start a backlash. I don’t think it’s cool in any way that Miley’s twerpy friend called her “fat”, and “bitter”. But she opened that dialogue by opening her mouth. For KELLY’S sake, it would have been best to not get involved.

  25. La jolie now Andrea says:

Miley better get her shit together cos the backlash has just began.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2402377/Miley-Cyruss-BFF-hits-bitter-Kelly-Clarkson-criticising-singers-raunchy-VMAs-performance.html
And she needs to tell her friends to keep mute

  26. OhDear says:

I was grossed out by the juxtaposition between having teddy bears and candy while acting all raunchy.

Other than that, it was boring and showed that Miley needs to rethink how she structures her performances. She’s not a terrible singer generally, but all she did was scream, flail around, grab her crotch and attempt to twerk.

  27. Violet says:

I can’t say that I can disagree with Kelly. All the female performers — Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry — performed in their underwear.

Seems to me that if they were more confident in their music they wouldn’t feel the need to resort to using their bodies to sell their songs. (Men do it too, except they usually use backup dancers to do the stripping and writhing on their behalf.)

(And, no. I didn’t think any of them came across as women comfortable expressing their sexuality. It all seemed try-hard and desperate.)

As for Gloria Loring, she should keep out of this debacle because her son’s videos are arguably every bad as tasteless as anything Miley does. “Blurred Lines” is a catchy tune, but clearly Robin didn’t feel it’d make it on his own merits or he wouldn’t have resorted to using scantily-clad girls in the video.

    • MonicaQ says:

To me Katy Perry looked like she was having fun even if her performance was boring.

    • Violet says:

      @MonicaQ

True, Katy did seem to be having more fun than the others but I still stand by my original point.

BTW, I winced when she started skipping rope and her breasts were bouncing so hard — I’m about the same cup size as Katy and that must’ve been uncomfortable to the point of being painful!

    • Claudia says:

I strongly disagree about Katy Perry. She was wearing a boxing costume. That’s how female boxers and MMA fighters dress. That was not her prancing about in barely-there underwear and looking like a stripper.

  28. Bodhi says:

Do people SERIOUSLY believe that Miley came up all that crap on her own, on the spot?

It was a freaking award show, all of those performances are practiced to death & vetted by the folks running the show. Robin knew exactly what was going to happen & it his damn fault if he didn’t tell him mother or his wife. I’m certain that Miley came up with a lot of that crap, but she has a “team” to help her with all that stuff and the VMAs has its own staff to help.

Yes, it was tacky & dumb, but, if people want to bitch & moan about it, there are a WHOLE lot more folks to bitch about than Miley

    • Dannielle says:

No there isn’t, Bodhi!! Haven’t you heard? Miley’s the DEHVUL! The master of all evil! Of course it was all her idea! Rabble rabble

Seriously, Bodhi, ITA. Miley’s image as we speak is a *team* effort. But I guess it’s sporting to kick around chipmunk faced 20 year olds? Whatver. Meh.

    • anon33 says:

OMG SO MUCH THIS TIMES A MILLION BILLION.

All this crap about stupid Robin Thicke and his stupid mother being “upset” and “concerned” and all of these people talking about this performance as if Miley came up with it solely on her own-PLEASE. I have a bridge to sell you if you believe that. Maybe she went a little crazy once she was up there, but I ASSURE you that everyone involved knew exactly what was going to happen.

      • Jayna says:

Robin never said he was upset like he didn’t know anything and his wife said she knew about it. I think she was at rehearsals. Of course, it was planned, but I don’t think Robin ever expected her to overtake it and overshadow him so over the top. It’s unprofessional. When you ask somebody to come on as a guest in your performance, that person’s job is to enhance your performance and make the performer look good, not to try to be the star of the show. In that respect, I think Robin was shocked compared to rehearsals.

  29. Appleve says:

i will be 30 in few weeks and yes i have a little extra meat here and there. i think Miley performance was not only stank, desperate, horrible, disgusting, cheap and skanky. there is only one label for that suit her they way she wanted “white trash” but no channel. u dont look like classy white trash honey, u are on Courtney Stodden level now. just pure trash

  30. junegorilla says:

Why is Robin Thicke getting a pass on this?

    • MissMoody says:

Just for the record, there are tons of articles calling out Robin Thicke. Not every single article on Miley’s performance has to be all about the *GASP* evil man in the Beetlejuice suit. At the end of the day, grinding on and molesting Robin Thicke was like a second of that entire trainwreck. Google “Robin Thicke” if you are so eager to use that pitchfork

  31. DiamondGirl says:

Brooke Shields? Really? She played a prostitute before she was a teenager, so that’s ironic. Can your daughters watch Pretty Baby?

    • Claudia says:

That was on her mom (seriously! just read anything about their relationship and what a crazy her mom was).

Also, think about what you just wrote. Brooke Shields was not even a teenager when she did that movie. She was a child. This was not a choice she made as an adult and if you think that as a child she sought out that role, you’re very mistaken.

    • Johanna says:

Agreed – came here to say the same thing! Seems a little ironic coming from the woman who starred in Pretty Baby as a 12 year old. Can she not look back and find a little empathy? She might not have had creative control, but she can at least understand being young and being in the industry your whole life.

I think the only thing Miley did that was wrong was perform poorly (in other words, everything – lol). It just seemed awkward and “try-hard”… not natural or sexual or appealing in the slightest.

    • Laura says:

Brooke was playing a part, she is an actress.
And although she was also a child star, Brooke never spiralled out of control and behaved like a tramp in public. In fact, she remained a virgin until 22 and attended university following her years as a child star. Her life wasn’t a walk in the park either, as her mother was an alcoholic and often difficult to deal with. Brooke is an example of how to move beyond the child star status gracefully and maturely. Miley could take a clue from Brooke instead of trying to act like an over sexualized clown in heat.

      • Alarmjaguar says:

I hate that all the backlash is making me defend Miley, but what on earth does when someone loses their viginity have to do with it? This whole conversation is about slut shaming Miley. She went over the top and now people are desperately trying to put her back in ‘her place.’ She didn’t stay on script as passive little sex object and now everyone is ‘shocked, shocked’ that she wasn’t demure or sexy enough for them. Seems to me that she had fun and wasn’t sexy, so that’s her crime.

      • blaize says:

The fact that you brought up virginity as an example of good behavior demonstrates that you’re just a tad prudish.

Let’s leave slut-shaming to the bigots/extremists on the far right, please.

  32. newtsgal says:

Funny the best comeback the Miley camp has is, she is 30 and fat….FFS!
Hey Miley, Kelly has more talent in her little finger and the reason she was on WDYTYA is because her family tree HAS branches!!

  33. Toni with an I says:

Strippers should take offense.. Most of them can at least dance..

  34. thisgirl says:

i didn’t read all the comments, but it pisses me off that miley gets all the shit. no one thinks robin thicke is a perv? he’s a married man with kids who is 36 years old and should know better.

    • Claudia says:

What exactly did he do? If you watch the performance, you’ll see he doesn’t dance with her or even touch her– he mostly just stands there and sings.

      • Bodhi says:

Do you really think he had no input on the performance? He ok’d it, there is no way it would have happened if he hadn’t

      • Bijlee says:

He used her for controversy. Everybody knows miley is controversial. Remember her pole dance. This was a highly calculated move on everybody’s part and miley was probably used for their own gain. She may have no idea and was probably thinking this is fun and raunchy and edgy and so Madonna and urban and rachet when it was just a reallllyyyy bad performance. She’s dumb enough to fall for the praise and think the haters are just jealous etc. this girl is still making money for people that’s it. Robin was a complicit gross old man in it. He was pervy and gross. sorry. its time his mama accepted it. Just like his now nasty song. I can only listen to the roots version of that song now.

Dammit robin! You’re a talented guy why did you okay this nonsense????!!!

      • Happy21 says:

I think he comes across as a douche and the song is a little rapey but no, he doesn’t do much during the performance. While the above posters post about how this must have been rehersed to death, etc. I’m unsure. It was so much an awkward mess I have to wonder…He really didn’t look shocked but he did look like he was trying to just get through the song.

And the unfortunate thing is I truly do like Blurred Lines but now when I hear it, I’m going to hearing Miley’s off-key voice screeching it 🙁

      • Claudia says:

I truly believe that things likely did not go the way they went in rehearsal. The performance did not look like something that was rehearsed. I agree with Happy that he looked like he was just trying to get through the song. If anything, he was probably expecting her to strut around him, etc. but not the grinding and so on.

  35. ella says:

Kelly looks like an extra dwarf from LOTR in that pic.

  36. Vanessa says:

What Kelly said wasn’t even bad she was completely right Miley was pitch during her performance . I finally watch the Miley performance it cringeworthy and I was embrassed for her Miley could have just done a normal performance with dancers and people wouldn’t have been upset. Miley was Obscene and horrible she had her a legs wide open she shook her nonexistent ass in the audience faces she dry hump a freaking foam finger . And to it top all off she was off key and her voice sucked her acted overshadowed one of the best performance of night which was Bruno mars .

    • June says:

I know, Bruno OWNED that performance! It was phenomenal. I hate that I’m hardly hearing anything about it in the media world.

  37. lifelessons says:

As I watched her performance and I think I only made it as far as I did because I was horrified and shocked. It was disturbing and embarrassing to watch. I want to roll her tongue up and paper clip her lips closed till she gets that it needs to stay in her mouth.

Saying that I am not sure I can totally agree that Robin Thicke had no clue what was going to happen. If you watch other videos of his he really does not dance or grind against any of the women in his videos. He seems to like to watch them as they grind up on him, each other, or objects. He never really participates by dancing. He is usually sitting or standing against something as the women all strut around him. I do not think her age had anything to do with him just standing there. Maybe his wife and him have an agreement “Watch all you want, let them grind all over you, but keep your touching to a minimum.” But saying this hearing people go on about how he is a married man drives me nuts because though he is married he is also a performer and like actors/actresses what they do is just that acting/performing. Women get paid to get all up on him all the time.

My biggest thing is I will never ever ever be able to look at a foam finger the same again!

  38. buzz says:

I will just bet that Miley and Liam are actually married. They secretly married awhile back, and that is why she can get him upon occasion to show up on a red carpet with her, and why he hasn’t completely publicly bailed.

  39. AKA says:

This article sums up why the entire performance was disgusting on a different level:

    http://groupthink.jezebel.com/solidarity-is-for-miley-cyrus-1203666732#

So all you bloggers out there. Please spare me the articles about how Miley is a woman owning her sexuality. That’s not what it was at all.

  40. alex says:

I just have one question…people are going on and on about the twerking and stripper moves and yea all this is blah.
But seriously…what’s going on with that TONGUE!?? It’s an abnormal tongue! And who constantly sticks it out like that?
That for me was the most annoying…i was just like “OMG CLOSE YOUR HORSE MOUTH PLEASE!” hahah

    • Claudia says:

lol Almost everyone at CB goes off about her tongue on every post, especially the VMAs one– where have you been? 😉

Even Kelly Osbourne called her out on it. Her tongue reminds me of a baby calf tongue, a Chinese Crested’s tongue, and a lizard tongue all rolled into one. Also want to add– she needs to brush her tongue! It’s always so grossly white.

      • alex says:

haha i just started on CB and commenting. I gotta catch up with everything!

Yea her tongue is always white! EW! like you said, at least she can clean it!

  41. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

This is the first and quite possibly the last time that anyone has ever referred to Britney Spears as ’empowered’.

*makes the ‘Are you new?’ face*

  42. Aurelia says:

Just watched the show. Poor Miley, she just couldn’t wait to rip the teddy bear number 1 costume off and get hardcore. She couldn’t get it off quick enough. She reminded of a demented little exhuberant puppy dog. Young and dumb with miles to learn. Right I’m off now too, watch some bit bit britney on you tube in her hey day. Maybe a bit of vintage Madge too.

  43. Aurelia says:

Ok, just finished watching the video for Blurred Lines. I found it delightful and loved the topless cottquettish models. And I’m a 40 year old married woman.

Man alive those gals worked it. They were cute and perky, just like the jaunty beat of the music.

My fav was the burnette. Looked like a bored caucasian version of a young bianca jagger. Anyhoo, I dugress.

What I wanted to say is that those birds in the video had more sex appeal in their toes than the whole bodily disgrace of that silly little kid Miley. I think we would all agree. Nuff said.

  44. blaize says:

Really immature of her friend to attack Kelly using her weight and age.

  45. Aurelia says:

Oh, make that horny little demented puppy dog.

  46. Debbie says:

“Joys of voter suppression?” Really, Kai? Can we not here?

  47. Susei says:

Robin and Miley performed “Blurred Lines”. She did the same what the (same-aged) girls in the video did and she did it with fun… the problem is she is asexual and the tongue-thing is stupid.
But it was clearly a “blurred lines”-performance, even her costume was video-based.
The whole performance was planed. As usually people bash only the girl/woman and not the guy.
