Jessica Simpson covers the February issue of Redbook. I’m still not in love with the way Redbook designed their cover, but I have to admit, Jessica’s cover shoot isn’t bad at all. They did several closeups of her pretty face, and the wider shots where you can see her figure don’t look overly Photoshopped. It’s nice. You can see the Redbook slideshow here. As for the interview… well, Jessica is basically just promoting her body and her relationship with Eric Johnson. Apparently, Jessica thinks Eric is “one of the hottest men I¹ve ever seen.” Seriously, she said that. About Eric.
On what it felt like when the press attacked her weight:
“I never listen to it, no matter who the press talks about when they¹re pregnant. It¹s ridiculous and unfair. I think any woman who is pregnant and creating a life is pretty much entitled to eat whatever she wants as long as she¹s healthy. I wasn¹t going to let the media take away from what was one of the happiest times in my life.”On what will keep her upcoming marriage to Eric Johnson healthy in the long run?
“I¹ve learned that sometimes love is not enough. You can have a soul mate and be madly in love with that person, but it¹s not necessarily enough. I think you have to have personalities that mesh well. You have to be the yin to their yang. You also have to be open to figuring things out together and communicating even when it¹s the last thing you want to do. I have to admit, it doesn¹t hurt that Eric is one of the hottest men I¹ve ever seen and he looks amazing naked!”On the infamous high-waisted blue jeans:
“What’s so unbelievable is that I was probably at least 15 pounds smaller than I am right now. What’s more unbelievable is that the press could create something like that out of a pair of jeans…what woman wants to be brought down for wearing a pair of jeans?”On why she’s so together
“I’m very in control of who I am. I’ve always been that girl who is driven and determined. I’m sure that has something to do with all the responsibility I had when I was very young. I was essentially supporting my family from when I was 14.”
Let’s take it point by point.
*Was the criticism about Jessica’s weight while she pregnant unfair and uncomfortable? Yes, it was. I said so at the time. I was very put off by how negative people were towards her during her first pregnancy. That being said, she put herself out there. No one forced her to become a spokesperson for Weight Watchers.
*Eric looks amazing naked? Er. Ew. I do not want to think about it. I’ll just say this – I bet he’s well-endowed. And he seems like a chill guy. Maybe that’s enough.
*The high-waisted jeans: we’ve talked about those chili cook-off photos so, so much already. Jessica’s right that it wasn’t so much that she had gained weight, but that the jeans were just really unflattering. That being said, she had gained some weight and many people just kind of noted that without mocking her or anything. They were just like, “Oh, Jess has gained a few pounds.” And Jessica freaked out.
*Do you buy that Jessica is “driven” and “in control”? I do not. I think she’s probably a better manager than we give her credit for, but I think she is, at heart, a girl who would rather be farting around in a pair of sweatpants at home. No disrespect. I am that girl as well. It’s one of the reasons I still defend Jess.

Yeah, it’s cliche. But all of those BW poses are, and I think it was the idea kind of. I can picture her being ridiculous and cheesy. (i would cheesy model, I would feel weird trying to be pretty. My wedding day was torture)
I actually think they’re my favorite from the shoot. They have almost a sixties vibe, and she is one of the few women I think looks BEST with minimal makeup. She is freaking gorgeous barefaced.
Those black and white photos are really stunning. The cover shot, not so much. What on earth is she wearing? That dress is right on par with her mom jeans.

Time to stop talking about the weight. How is that she ignored what was said but seems to know what was said in all sorts of detail. She has made a career of her weight – first from being super thin and looking like a blow up doll, and now from being fuller figured and getting endorsement deals. Either way, it’s all about what she looks like and her weight. I know everyone finds her harmless, but she’s like too many celebs – obsessed with what she looks like, and way too fake looking. If she were of average weight during her pregnancy, and didn’t detail the pure junk she ate, would anyone remember to talk about her?

This is a very good point. She’s constantly putting the info out there and talking about it, so what else are people going to discuss when she does publicity? And that’s the risk you run when you’re famous for being famous, as she seems to be now.
ITA. I think one of the reasons the “mom jeans” were such a big deal was b/c a short time earlier she was all over mag covers for her weight loss and her very tiny size 2 body in Dukes of Hazzard. She had no problem w/ people talking about her body then…
Well, someone needs to think he looks good naked, might as well be the woman marrying him. They make pretty babies, and that’s all I got.
I liked the Valerie Bertinelli, Jenny Craig commercials…you actually saw her size when she started and then how her diet progressed. With Simpson’s WW comercials, its like they waited for her to become a certain size BEFORE they started doing the commercials. That being said, they both had trainers, and a lot more help than the regular joe schmo trying to lose weight.
And I think its sweet she thinks her man is sexy…I’ve been married 32 years and I still think my man is HOT!

I think the weight watchers deal p!ssed people off because we all knew about it when she was only about 5moths pregnant. And then she started stuffing her face with all kinds of s!utty brownies and talking about it. That part seemed so contrived. Like she gained a lot on purpose so weight watchers would give her the deal.

I have to disagree that people were like “oh, she gained a few pounds”. The tabloid covers were attacking her as if she had been caught shooting heroin or something, like this was some huge problem and she owes the world an explanation. I think the media coverage of her small weight gain and unflattering jeans was very harsh.
I actually think she’s got it together. I think she’s kind of known as a workaholic. This isn’t a girl who’s just the face of her brand – she runs a (multi?) billion dollar empire. She’s smart – despite being an airhead. She’s not Britney Spears, dolled up and trotted out as a cash cow.
She is just the face. It’s a licensing deal, and she shows up to endorse. She’s not a designer. I think her dad is the savvy one.

From watching Newlyweds, she never seemed like she was “in control”. Her father was the one who was arranging endorsement/promotional/whatever deals for her, her mother was the one who was telling her how to behave, i.e. be nice to her fans, not fart in business meetings, and her husband, who is the inferior singer in terms of raw talent, had to tell her how to arrange her songs. However, she was a very young woman at the time. It seems as though she has grown up quite a bit, just judging by her remarks here on love and relationships. And although we like to rag on her K-Fed, I’ll admit he does set off my free loader, user alarm bells, maybe she is with him because he is low-key and she gets to be the one in charge and assert herself more. After being with John Mayer and Adam Levine, two known womanizers and Mayer seeming to be outright misogynist, I can’t hate on her for being with someone who seems to respect her and that she feels comfortable around. Although it’s strange that she is always speaking about how awesome he is and we never hear anything from him? I just realized I’ve never heard a quote from him.
I like that we haven’t heard anything from him. I think it shows that he’s with her because he wants to be with her. I don’t think he wants to be a celebrity, even though he’s with a celebrity, because otherwise he would be talking to the media.
I love how nothing bothers this girl. She just seems like a well adjusted, happy little puppy with boobs.

I like her. I think she had a controlling father who was leading a secret life and imposing his own desires for stardom on his daughters and she overcame it, from all appearances, unscathed. I like how she talks about her nekid hubby. After a quarter century with my own hubs, I still think he looks amazing with or without clothes on. I wish her that.
I simply do not get her appeal. She was never a super pop star, moderate talent, conventional blond big boob looks. What lucky star was she born under that made her take off after her embarrassing turn as a reality star? She has always been overdressed and tacky in her fashion choices, I have seen her clothing line in our local department stores and it is ugly!! She has made a brand and fortune off of being vapid and superficial, ditzy and desperate with men. If this is the kind of woman that succeeds today, is rewarded with money and adulation, than sign me done with the whole thing.
To follow up your comment re fashion empire- has anyone ever seen an actual person wearing JS shoes/dresses? I have never seen it- and I notice shoes. God knows, they are ugly enough in stores, but if it’s a zillion $$ empire, it means someone somewhere is buying the stuff, right? Maybe the bags drive that train.

I have her shoes, purses and clothes. Some of it is really awful (albiet not nearly as awful as Madonna & Lourdes’ Material Line) but some of it is quite cute, of decent quality and very reasonably priced. I have a number of her jeans because I’m short and she makes short! Not many companies do that anymore 🙂

Nothing says “I’m hiding something” like those dresses. Yes, they suck you in, but at this point it’s so obviously the go to for someone trying to cover their flaws. To me it’s like wearing your spanks on the outside. Everybody knows what your doing.

Umm. What? I’m sorry Kaiser, but were you watching/reading/tuning in to the same media that I was after those photos came out because that is not at all how it went down. I mean, all the “Jessica Got Fat!!” covers alone. It was terrible and it was EVERYWHERE at the time.

Funny Story? A few years ago my now ex-boyfriend and I were watching Newlywed’s on DVD and when we got to the “special features” there was an interview with Jess from early on in her career and my bf actually said in all seriousness, “Wait, who’s that?? Why is some random girl here all of a sudden?” Lol. Her face had be altered THAT much even back then! Her before and after pics are all over Google: long gone is the once infamously square jaw, prominent nose and small, narrow eyes. Pretty startling…But like most celebs, she was smart to have lots of subtle work over time. That’s how you keep ’em guessing! I don’t think she needed it though.
I like her figure. I’m trying to lose weight and hope I can manage that. Anyways she never was really fat but I think she did extreme dieting for dukes of hazard and I think the public wanted her to maintain that unreasonable weight goal.
I don’t find her a compelling spokesperson. With nothing to do all day, all the help she could possibly want, a baby daddy at home who works out with her, trainers, cooks and plastic surgeons, she still struggled.
Not a ringing endorsement for WW if you ask me. Show me a woman with an average life and real struggles, and show pics along the way, and not just of her flippin’ face — I might vaguely be interested then.
I can buy that she’s in control and driven, at least in comparison to her peers. She and her team have taken a mediocre singing career and turned it into a branding fortune. Of course she isn’t involved in all of the business or design aspects of things, but she’s making lots of personal appearances, going to meetings, and doing just the right number of interviews to keep herself in the public eye. I’d say that’s fairly driven compared to a typical washed up pop star.
As for her husband looking good naked, he’s not my type, but presumably he’s hers. As long as it makes her happy, good for them, I suppose.

I was critical of her pregnancy weight because she was very open about treating her body like a waste disposal.
And she was both proud of it and seemingly ignorant of how much trouble it would be to lose it hence breezily signing on to a weight loss contract which she appeared to get out of (ie the losing weight part) by becoming pregnant again. Who would criticise a pregnant woman of not losing the original weight per her contract.
She appears to have learnt the lesson though because she stayed off social media 2nd time round, thus making it difficult to know what she was eating and therefore no criticisms there from the public, but also her 2nd pregnancy weight seemed to be controlled. She didn’t balloon like the first time.
Its amazing that its said that Jess puts herself out there being a celeb so she asks for all the trash on her weight yet many women celebs now havectaken the same platform and cried foul and people have backed off but not for jessica. Some really only like to harp on jess. When jess was getting trashed for her jeans weight etc there was no one willing to defend but many now all want the same platform.the same can be said for her fashion line. While everyone was trashing weight she was designing yes designing. There is not a designer alive that doesnt use assistants and ideas under there umbrella.. Next she as per camuto is now called his partner. Her contract liscence deal was renegotiated and her take increased.. When Camuto receives awards it is Jessica that is asked to give his reward.. He has others under him butbits still Jessica. The last few days many of you have missed some awesome genuine interviews and get lost in a lot of tabloid talk and fabrication and will never change your mind. My wish is that just even two people actually and genuinly investigate who Jessica really is and how many other celebs actually copy a lot from Jessica. As fir her clothing off hand i cant remember but there areca couple tv shows that many of Jessica clothes are on. And shoes and actually celebs wear her shoes.
