‘Murder, She Wrote’ reboot starring Octavia Spencer has been scrapped

2014 National Board Of Review Awards Gala
The last time we reported on NBC’s “Murder, She Wrote” reboot, the former star of the show, Angela Lansbury, was expressing her disapproval of the re-use of her beloved series name. The show was to star Octavia Spencer as a “hospital administrator,” “amateur sleuth” and mystery writer, similar to Lansbury’s seminal character but with a twist. Lansbury, 88, made it clear that she admired Spencer and thought she was talented, but said that the re-use of the “Murder, She Wrote” name shouldn’t happen. She said “I’m sorry that they have to use the title ‘Murder, She Wrote,’ even though they have access to it and it’s their right.

Lansbury can rest assured that the memory of her series will remain intact, because the reboot has been scrapped. NBC decided to pass on it, but they seem to be reserving the right to reuse the “Murder, She Wrote” title in a different way. The show’s famous name was both its biggest strength and weakness.

I’ve learned that NBC has opted not to proceed with the proposed re-imagining of one of the most successful series in TV history – Murder, She Wrote — which had Oscar winner Octavia Spencer attached to star. The project, from writer Alexandra Cunningham and producer David Janollari, got a lot of attention when it came together in October, receiving a put pilot commitment from the network. A light, contemporary procedural, it was to follow a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth (Spencer) who self-publishes her first mystery novel.

Rebooting an iconic series is extremely difficult, as proved by a string of efforts, including NBC’s attempt at a contemporary Rockford Files from House creator David Shore and producer Steve Carell, which didn’t go to series. It took two attempts with different writers for a new Hawaii Five-0 to get on the air. The same happened with Prime Suspect — it was actually Cunningham’s take that got NBC brass’ approval and attracted Maria Bello for a well-received remake of the British drama — and with ABC’s Charlie’s Angels. Word is that NBC is not giving up on a Murder, She Wrote reboot. Because the original series was so beloved, I hear the network brass felt they could try approaching it in a different way, possibly with a new concept. The pass from NBC frees up Spencer, who is expected to be among the most sought-after actresses for pilots this season.

[From Deadline]

I don’t get why they couldn’t create a starring vehicle for Octavia Spencer as a crime-solving character without borrowing so much from Jessica Fletcher as to require the same name. They probably wanted to trade on the powerful “Murder, She Wrote” name, but it ended up being a double-edged sword, as Deadline explained. I never realized that it was harder to reboot a series than to create a new one. With all remakes that get made I assumed it was a much easier process.

To parse Deadline’s conclusion that “network brass felt they could try approaching it in a different way, possibly with a new concept,” does that mean that they’re still going to try for some kind of “Murder, She Wrote” remake and that they just had creative differences with this one? I hope that’s not the case, but NBC is known for screwing up their programming, so it’s of course possible.

Also, I have my fingers crossed for Octavia Spencer. She’s an excellent Oscar-winning actress and I think she can more than carry a series. Many people were looking forward to this, and hopefully Spencer will get picked up for another worthy show. AMC might have something coming up.

Angela Lansbury

Octavia Spencer is shown at the National Board of Review awards on 1-7-14 and at the Independent Spirit Awards nomination announcements on 11-26-13. I believe he’s crying because Fruitvale Station was nominated for Best First Feature. Also, she looks like she’s lost weight! Good. It sounded like it could be a stinker

  2. Ari says:

This actually would have been a reboot worth watching.

    • kgg says:

I know. The old lady in me was kind of excited. I remember watching the show with my mom when I was tiny.

This is for the best. Saved everyone major embarrassment.

Nothing against Spencer but THANK GOD.

  6. lucy2 says:

I think they tested the waters with the news and were surprised how negative the response towards a reboot was.
I would definitely check out Octavia in a series, so I hope they find something much better for her.

  7. blue marie says:

I would have watched it, Octavia Spencer is awesome. I think I might like to see her do comedy though, she was pretty funny in her appearance on Mom..

  8. Miffy says:

    *does happy dance*

The memory of Jessica Fletcher shall not be tainted!!

No offense to Spencer, she’s a good actress but this was a gratuitous and TERRIBLE idea.

  9. FLORC says:

This has perked up my snowed in wednesday!

There was too much of a seperation from a beloved show to a new everything.
Though the show sounded like it would have been good I can’t understand why they didn’t rename it from the start. Or why they couldn’t rename it from here on out.

  10. BeckyR says:

Why mess with a classic or is it now a trend to redo great series and movies with black actors, just make things “equal” which is what I read several months ago in a trade paper. No offense intended.

    • FingerBinger says:

First off that’s not true. I can only think of two movies/TV shows remade with Black actors. ‘The Honeymooners’ and ‘Steel Magnolias’.

  11. Nell Graham says:

There is only one Jessica Fletcher! And only one Murder, She Wrote! I grew up in Maine and watching every Sunday was a family tradition. I have such fond memories of Murder, She Wrote. I was beyond annoyed when they announced a reboot. I really hope they just take bits and pieces and call it another name. You really can’t improve on this original, in my opinion.

  12. Ari says:

Such a mixed bag of responses haha this must have how it went down in the testing panel!

  13. Lucky Charm says:

The premise for this reboot sounds similar to the Dick Van Dyke series that he starred in with his son and the actress from AMC. I can’t remember the name of the show but he played Dr. Sloane.

And I also don’t understand why they just couldn’t give it a new name rather than scrapping the whole thing. It seems like it would be a great show, with a great actress.

  14. GirlyGirl says:

    poo

I was actually looking forward to this.

  15. Alarmjaguar says:

Jessica!! Love that show. It is streaming on Netflix, FYI great guilty pleasure

  16. Alana says:

I would have been into this. Damn it.

  17. Maybenow says:

    Good!

  18. RobN says:

I’d have been more offended by the idea of a reboot if the entire series hadn’t been a Miss Marple rip-off to begin with.

  19. magpie says:

Please, Murder she wrote was OK but it’s not like it was M*A*S*H or the Mary Tyler Moore show. It would have been fine as a reboot and Octavia would have been great.

  20. Dommy Dearest says:

I didn’t know either! You’d think with how Hollywood has been spitting out remakes versus making a new movie with a new concept would be much easier.

  21. joan says:

I’m white, and the first thing that comes to my mind is Why are they screwing over this lovely black actress?

Maybe it’s not MEANT to be racial but their stupidity ends up causing unfairness to an actress who would have been that rarity on TV — a black female star of a show. Awkward.

And I never watched that stupid show but am sure she would’ve classed up whatever it was.

  22. skeptical says:

why didn’t they just name it something different from the get-go?
The whole Murder, She Wrote concept is tightly wound around the former teacher turned writer.
if it’s a new concept, then it’s a new show entirely, not a reboot.

  23. kitty-bye says:

    Thankful.
