Leo DiCaprio’s ‘never’ done drugs: ‘Hollywood was a walk in the park for me’

FFN_RIJ_ADG_AWARDS_020814_51324942

Here are some photos from the Art Directors Guild Awards over the weekend. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill attended, although it felt like Leo took some pains to not pose with Jonah – who seems more and more like Leo’s clingy girlfriend – on the red carpet. But never fear, Leo and Jonah presented an award together, which was yet another in a long line of wonderful moments that I’m sure Jonah will commemorate with a Lovely Leo Collage.

In other Leo news, his Oscar campaign continues to hum along. It feels like Leo is doing more public appearances and awards shows than any other Best Actor Oscar nominee – which means, to me, that Leo wants it. It’s like he’s saying to the Academy, “If you’re not going to give it to Chiwetel and Matthew McConaughey is my main competition, then I’m really going to go for it.” Remember how Leo allegedly (or not so much) told a fan that he had never done cocaine? Well, Leo is now directly saying that in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

Growing up in the bad part of LA: “I try to tell my godson, who lives close to that area, what it was like, how there used to be a major prostitution ring on my street corner, crime and violence everywhere. It really was like ‘Taxi Driver’ in a lot of ways,” DiCaprio says, puffing away on an e-cigarette. “And I’m not sure he believes me. It’s hipster central, totally gentrified now. The Waterbed Hotel?” DiCaprio laughs. “I don’t think that’s there anymore.”

Income disparity in America & The Wolf of Wall Street: “Who am I to talk about this?” DiCaprio says, opening a second bottle of Coke, warming to the subject. “It goes back to that neighborhood. It came from the fact that I grew up very poor and I got to see the other side of the spectrum.”

He was a scholarship kid at the UCLA Lab School: “It was like this little Garden of Eden. There was a park and kids were playing in the sunshine and everything was multicultural, everything was peaceful, every religion and race and attitude was respected equally. And if I went to play with my friends, I would drive to Beverly Hills and go in their backyard and there’d be a waterfall there. I mean, a waterfall! In the backyard? What the …! When I went back to the public school system, it was like — boom — this is reality. I got beat up the day I arrived because I had the attitude,” and here the 39-year-old actor shifts into a blissed-out hippie voice, “of everyone living harmoniously with one another.” He laughs. “That was the motivational thing that happened to me in my life. I was 15, and I said to my mom, ‘I want to be an actor. Please take me to auditions.’ Because I had to get out of that public school system.”

He’s never done drugs: “Never done it,” DiCaprio says emphatically, talking about drugs. “That’s because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was 3 or 4 years old. So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me…. I’d go to parties and it was there and, yeah, there’s that temptation. Hollywood is a very volatile place where artists come in and they essentially say they want to belong. It’s incredibly vulnerable to be an actor and also get criticism at a young age when you’re formulating who you are. We’ve seen a lot of people fall victim to that, and it’s very unfortunate.”

What Marty Scorsese has taught him: “I’m always a bit more, ‘Let’s make sure people get that moment,’ and Marty says, ‘No kid. We don’t need a voice-over there. Just let the audience sit with that.’ And that’s been the great learning experience for me with him. You’re always looking for that one, definitive answer, but it’s always more satisfying if you let people do the work themselves and reach their own conclusions. That doesn’t mean the answer’s not there. It’s just not obvious.”

[From the LA Times]

Is it just me or is Leo very likeable in this interview? Maybe I just forget how likeable he can be when he’s giving a rare one-on-one interview. But Leo doesn’t show this side of himself very often, talking about education and poverty in a personal way like this. Also: do you think it’s humble-bragging when Leo says Marty refers to him as “kid”? I think it’s like, “Hey, I’m so tight with him that I can call him ‘Marty’ and he calls me ‘kid’ because I’m like a son to him.”

Re: the oscar thing. I haven’t seen Dallas Buyers Club, but MM is knocking it out of the park in HBO’s True Detectives. I also loved Killer Joe. He really is rethinking his career and I’ll be delighted if he wins.

    • Sixer says:

Tell me more about True Detectives. It’s not starting until later this month on Sky but the trailers look great. I have it on my recording schedule.

      • Ruth Dunbar says:

Oh, god, watch it as soon as it airs. Last night’s episode was a knockout. I was never a MM fan, but he’s finally interesting to me now. He was amazing in Dallas Buyer’s Club.

      • T.fanty says:

I like it very much. The first one or two episodes threaten to go into Southern cliche, but MM and WH keep it moving. It’s one of those shows that puts character study before plot, and the two leads really pull it off. It’s a nice reminder of what a good actor Harrelson can be.

      • mercy says:

Leo is more charming, but MM is the better actor, imo. I think the Best Actor race this year is between MM and Ejiofor. True Detective looks good, but I need more time to get into it.

      • Sixer says:

See, that sounds right up my alley. And I love Harrelson. And would I even notice Southern cliche?

      • Dana m says:

Dont get me wrong. I LOVE Leo. For years now he has been my “boyfriend”. But I will say that MM is very charming in person! He
is not on my top 5 list either. But Ive been lucky enough to have the opportunity to hold tiny conversations with him 2times and he is so down to earth, unpretentious and so nice. His accent is so cute too. That’s all .

      • Tiffany :) says:

I am loving True Detective. I love that I don’t know where exactly it is going to end up. Matthew has done some great work on there, and I LOVE seeing him and Harrelson together. They are both great actors.

    • QQ says:

They are BOTH incredible in True Detective Im super obsessed with that show at the moment!

      • Tulip Garden says:

Gonna try true detective based on all of this enthusiasm Sounds right up my alley. I would love some decent character/story driven shows to add to Sherolock and Justified.

      • ncmagnolia says:

Same here. That show is creepy as hell and darker than just about anything out there right now. MM and WH pull it out of what could be just Southern gothic and infuse it with every bit of emotional range there is. Last night’s epi just about made me crawl out of my skin. SEE IT!

    • JC says:

He is AH-MAH-ZING in True Detective. So, so, so good. That show is incredible and very underrated. It has Emmy written all over it. Last night’s episode was better than most action movies I’ve seen.

      • QQ says:

Oh My god YES i was coming to say that too that on the production Values alone, not even counting the scene chewing Matthew and Woody are perpetrating this is like a Movie every week! A GOOD tense movie!

I read or saw somewhere it’ll be like American Horror Story with either a different case/cast every season, any word on this??

      • ncmagnolia says:

This is what I found when researching it last night…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Detective_(TV_series) THR probably has more deets. I am obsessed with show, completely flipping out over it!

      • M.A.F. says:

@QQ-from my understanding, yes, TD will be in the vain of AHS. Each season will be a different story line with possible different actors. I’ve only watched a 1 1/2 episode (I started watching the second episode thinking it was the first so I switched it over) but I keep forgetting about it. Might have to do a binge watch soon.

    • Leah says:

I think people are too sentimental with re to MM because he did bad work for so many years they are surprised that he is turning out good work that they almost exaggerate how good he was. Not a massive Leo fan but too Leos credit he never fell for the temptation to take jobs purely due to the money. That too me is more admirable than someone who spent years in bad romcoms for the money and now that he is rich and in his 40s he starts worrying about his legacy. That said, i think chiwetel should win, he is a class above those two.

  2. Gwen says:

Except for the clichéness of his private life I really can’t see why people don’t like Leo…

    • Mark says:

Because the internet is full of people who hate people they’ve never met? There’s nothing wrong with his private life if he wants to hook up with models and go clubbing let him. No one here is calling Cameron Diaz a sad old woman

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Exactly. And it’s his private life, who cares. At least he never talked about babies and marriages, or how he would never marry someone who could be his daughter, and then started dating a toddler.

    • Tapioca says:

I don’t like him as an actor – I’ve never seen him in anything in which I wasn’t very aware that I was watching Leonardo DiCaprio, rather than a character.

I don’ t “hate” the guy, but he just doesn’t do anything for me!

      • Kiddo says:

Have you seen the Basketball Diaries or Gilbert Grape?

      • shitler says:

I just watched WOWS today. I kept thinking”This is how he played Howard Hughes in The Aviator, J Edgar Hoover, Calvin Candie etc. He is very one note and one dimensional. We call him DiCRAPrio in my house.

      • Tapioca says:

@Kiddo: I will make an exception for WEGG!

It’s hard to believe now that he lost out Best Supporting that year to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive – which is a great performance in a popcorn action flick, but not Oscar-worthy – and since then we’ve had the interminable attempts at winning the gold statuette.

I almost hope they give him one this year so he stops dragging Scorsese down to award-baiting mediocrity!

    • littlestar says:

When I got married in Vegas late last year at one of the big casino/hotels, my bridal party and I were gossiping with the manicurist who was doing our nails for my wedding. She told us about all the celebrities she had worked on, and we asked who the nicest celebrity was – she said Leo! And apparently everyone in the hotel salon loved him because he treated everyone like equals.

  3. Harriet says:

Leo is very likeable in general but saying he’s never done drugs…come on who would EVER believe that?

    • eliza says:

It is possible for people to never have done drugs. Not everyone has tried them.

      • JojoAnn says:

Lmao. Its Naivety Central over here today. The man is on campaign mode, he finally realises that perceptions of lifestyle have been a huge part of why the Academy members dont like him so he is having to reframe his public persona.

I mean barely afew months ago, there was a post here about Marty telling him to reel back his PR if he wants an Oscar and now guess whats happening. Like friggin clockwork. Leo is what is known as a functional user, stories about his drug use abound from years past.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

It’s very possible. Me and my mom were just talking about this—she grew up in what eventually became the ‘projects’ in Jackson, Tennessee. She lived in an apartment building that was 99% single women with kids…..no fathers around at all. She grew up around drugs….the worst she’s ever done was smoke a joint with her aunt–who also let her drink a few beers here and there. There was stuff EVERYWHERE.

She also told me that when she first joined the Navy (in the 80s), she, being 18, couldn’t do anything in San Francisco, where she was on leave–so she went to this house party with a group from the ship that she was on. She said the minute that they started pulling out needles, bent up spoons, and lighters–she left the house and went on the porch.

Didn’t even have to think about it twice.

I have a neighbor who’s a meth dealer—he lives less than thirty seconds away from me. Because I live VERY close to him, does that mean I’ve tried drugs? Because I’m young and live within spitting distance of the guy (who’d probably give me a discount if I baby sat his kid)?

      • Tulip Garden says:

It certainly doesn’t mean you have tried drugs based either on your neighborhood or socioeconomic background. Plenty of rich kids have incentive to try them as well because of money, boredom, and peer pressure. IMO, just as many upper and middle class parents share this worry with parents less advantaged. It is truly, I believe, a uniting fear.
I am not surprised that you have chosen a drug free life based on your many posts. I would have shocked to have read otherwise.
I say good on you or anyone who just doesn’t make that decision. Same goes for Dicaprio. It isn’t impossible and it seems bleak and cynical for people to think you “have to” or that everyone “tries it”.

    • Kim1 says:

I grew up across the street from a Crack house run by my uncle, about 75% of my relatives use drugs.I have never used any drug .I have never tried weed.I don’t smoke or drink. If I ever wanted any drugs I could get them for free from my uncle. It’s possible

    • Ruth Dunbar says:

Yeah, there are a lot of us who, for whatever reason, have never been interested in drugs. I haven’t missed out on anything because I haven’t dabbled in it. Now whether or not Leo here is being honest is another story.

    • Harriet says:

Harriet, you and I seem to have the same name. I hope we don’t get confused in the future! I can actually believe he isn’t a drug pusher. From seeing him in the early days and people he chose to hang out with and now.

    • Roma says:

To say this in the LA Time – I believe him. He knows that anyone who did drugs with him even once will be out selling their story. It’s the Oscar campaign he’s actually trying for; he wouldn’t put out a story that could tank his chance.

    • Shelby says:

I thinks it’s possible that Leo had never done drugs especially if he saw how it destroyed lives at such a young age. I have an uncle who is a drug addict and a chain smoker who lives just two doors from us. Growing up, I saw how it destroyed his life and family. Even up to this day, he is causing headaches to his adult twin daughters. Which is why my cousins are so hardworking and very driven to carve their own respective paths despite their dad’s addiction.

  4. Mya says:

He better win, is all I’m saying. He was fabulous in that movie and it’s been a long time coming.

Also, why is everything considered bragging? These people spend tons of time together and become familiar with one another. It isn’t completely uncommon for them to form close bonds or friendships.

    • Nikkie says:

Watch his Letterman interview, Marty calls Jonah Hill a kid too. I think he calls everyone under 40 a kid since he is so much older than them.

It’s the reverse of bragging to say someone refers to you as a kid because it emphasizes that you still have a lot of maturing to do and more to learn. That was Leo’s point.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

It’s a New York tough guy thing. They call everyone kid, nothing special or specific to a certain individual. Look at the end of Casablanca, even.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

I have to say, Leo was awesome in WOW…and I don’t get the Leo hate, either…so he loves his Victoria Secret models…he’s rich, famous, handsome, and SINGLE…..I have to say, I wouldn’t mind a Leo Oscar night steal. He has been in some great movies and done some great acting…

    • Erinn says:

This. chase consenting women all you want, Leo.

    • Emma says:

This! It´s not like he´s out there breaking up marriages or having heaps of kids that he doesn´t care for…he´s just dating young, beautiful, available women. I don´t think what he does is so bad.

I tend to agree with him on the drugs thing…some people just aren´t interested in drugs.

      • Nikollet says:

+1 Exactly. If you can get all these beautiful women, why not? As long as he doesn’t purposely hurt them, and based on his history if you were to date him you be deluded to think he’s going to settle down and start a family.

And I also agree on the drugs. I’ve always loved a wine, but never been interested in trying drugs.

    • minime says:

I respect the opposite opinion, BUT…I think that the “dislike” (hate is certainly too strong) for Leo is not only based on his taste for barely legal VS models, but also because many think he is an average actor with many important friends (directors), who have been giving him amazing roles in amazing movies for the last years. In my opinion, he is really horrible when it comes to on screen chemistry in romantic roles (or the romantic part of his roles anyway). I don’t remember his movies for his amazing performance, but for the usually really good scripts. But well, if Anne Hathaway can get an Oscar, I’m sure he deserves it better.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I was going to see WOW this weekend but it is not available at theaters now where I live😢. I get a little envious when I read from posters how much they enjoyed it!

      • Tiffany :) says:

I thought the movie was good, a solid B, but I don’t think it was one of the best films of the year. It could have been cut by a good 33%. It was way too long and felt repetative.

I thought Leo did a good job, but i think there are other performances that were more POWERFUL. W.O.W wasn’t powerful to me.

      • Tulip Garden says:

Thanks for the review 🙂 Makes having to wait a little less painful. OTOH, since I was determined to go to see a movie, I ended up with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Meh, it was what I was expecting it would be.

  6. Kali says:

The crush that Jonah Hill has on Leo is actually really adorable. I like to think that Jonah has a digital photo frame of all their greatest photos together that he can turn to look at before he goes to sleep at night.

As for the drugs thing, that’s about the only quote I give a solid side-eye to. She they’re talking about drugs, are they talking about ALL drugs or are they talking about Class A stuff? (Or what the US equivalent of really super bad stuff is?) Because I could imagine Leo seeing cocaine as something fairly casual.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

It is adorable. That Titanic moment will be in my memory forever. Why don’t we like Jonah again?

      • Kali says:

He came across like a real dick in an interview that was in “Rolling Stone” a while back. He seems to be learning from it though which can only be a good thing.

  7. Anna says:

Leo is getting very annoying to me now. In the past few years it seems like he’s been trying to be with the “cool” crowd too much. Especially with the rap/ hip hop crowd. I know he didn’t mention it directly in this interview but I feel like he was one step away from saying he grew up in the hood.
Has anyone else noticed in the past few years how he’s always posing and taking pictures with rappers and talking about his “dangerous” upbringing? LOL maybe it’s just something me and my friends have noticed

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Just because you’re white doesn’t mean you didn’t grow up in the ‘hood….it’s not race, it’s economics. Can I, as someone who is biracial say that I grew up in a sleepy, boring town–without being ‘attacked’ for it, because I’m (in a lot of people’s eyes) black, and so I must be from the ‘hood.

Which that isn’t a joke, as my older sister was asked by a coworker, where I live, if she lived in the ghetto. Because she was biracial.

A white man wrote ‘Training Day’—–he’s from the neighborhood that they filmed in.

If Leo was black or mixed race, would you even be saying anything?

      • mercy says:

I didn’t agree with Annie and I happen to agree with your point about economics, but since someone mentioned my name maybe I should speak for myself. 🙂 The part of town Leo grew up in definitely had its seedy elements, but it was also on the edge of some very affluent neighbourhoods.

      • Renee says:

Not to be nit-picky here but mixed race does not necessarily imply that the person in question is part black…

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @Renee
It’s not just black people in the ghetto…

      • Renee says:

Oh I know Virgilia, believe you me I know. I was referring to the part in your comment that stated that if Leo was black or mixed race, no one would be questioning his mentioning that he grew up poor as it seemed to imply that people who are mixed race are always part black.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        I was just making it me-specific, I guess…

    • mercy says:

He’s in campaign mode. He did spend his early years in a poor area, but it’s not like he grew up in the projects, and he achieved fame at a very young age. He’s spent more years living the high life at this point.

      • mercy says:

I didn’t do anything to you. I have a right to my opinions. I don’t see you attacking people who agree with you. 🙂

He worked and he got very lucky. That wasn’t my point, though.

      • Renee says:

        Look,

Although I admittedly am not a Leo fan I don’t really have a dime in this quarter but why the personal attack on Mercy? She has a right to her opinion and should be able to state it without being called names. We don’t all have to have the same opinion on a thread.

  8. Sara says:

Someone must tell him alcohol is a drug and I am sure he smokes weed. But I still applaud him for never trying the hard stuff.

    • epiphany says:

I think in his mind “doing” drugs means an ongoing habitual/addictive situation, using the hard stuff – heroin, crack, cocaine, etc… I don’t believe he’s never casually done a line of coke, or smoked a joint. To him, trying a drug, and then not using it again, is not the same as “doing” them, i.e., using on a regular basis.

    • littlestar says:

When I read his quotes, I thought “Okay, you don’t and have never done drugs, but is all the alcohol you drink really any better?” Because it’s well known Leo can be quite the booze hound. Seems a little hypocritical to me, for lack of a better word (and I don’t really think he’s a hypocrite per se, but to be proud of the fact that he doesn’t do drugs but always seems to have constant alcohol bloat?)…..

  9. Maritza says:

I believe him, why get high on drugs when he gets to date super models and travels the world. This guy enjoys his life and his profession, he has no need to ruin it with drugs. Good for him.

  10. Applapoom says:

I think he is just saying what he thinks we want to hear. He sounds a bit fake in the interview to me? Or try-hard? Not sure what

    • mercy says:

It’s not just you. He’s always seemed a little insecure, but he was more relaxed and fun when he was younger. Now he does come off as a bit of a try hard at times.

      • Gia says:

Well, he’s trying hard to win an Oscar…so it makes sense he’s giving it some effort. It’s not bad to want to win. To compete. Trying hard should be applauded.

  11. paola says:

I really really hope that this is his year at the Oscar’s. It’s well past due.

    • Mia4S says:

I hate the “past due” argument. He’s 40 years old and not dying. Far far better and more important Hollywood figures than him have not won or never won an Oscar. I would hope he’s not pathetic enough at this still young age to be hungry for a make up Oscar. It’s supposed to be about the performance, let’s at least try to pretend it still is.

      • paola says:

I think it would be time for him to win not because of ‘his age’ but because he deserves it. He has many Oscar- worth performances under his belt and I believe he deserves one before Matthew McWhathisnameis does.
I feel the same way about Amy Adams. She is a great actress, it’s time she gets an Oscar. They’ve both been in the showbiz long enough to be recognised for their consistent work for 20 years but I feel like they’ve been ignored and neglected.
In my opinion JLaw Oscar performance was an average work for an overrated film.

      • mercy says:

There are a lot of past due. Gary Oldman anyone? There are also a lot of never been recognised because their films weren’t the recipient of big budget marketing campaigns. It’s all very political. Leo has lost one he should have won (Gilbert Grape), but he has also received a lot more recognition than some very deserving actors and performances over the years.

      • M.A.F. says:

@Paola-sounds like you are describing a Honorary Oscar than one for their current project. Leo should have won for WEGG but that doesn’t mean he should get one now to make up for it.

As for Adams, I don’t think we have seen the best of her yet.

  12. Tic Tac, sir? says:

I love him so much. Like a fine wine, this one. So handsome.

  13. mercy says:

Alcohol is a drug. Nicotine is drug. Sex can be an addiction. Certainly not as bad as some of the other drugs out there, but just saying. I do appreciate where he comes from and that he didn’t become a River Phoenix, but I’m not that impressed with him personally. I’ve always found him very likeable in interviews, though, even if I sometimes question how much is real.

He’s a very charming and entertaining actor, but I do find him to be somewhat overrated. His finest performance to me is still Arnie in Gilbert Grape. He should have gotten an Oscar for that. Robert Redford should have been in his spot for All is Lost at this year’s Oscar, imo.

    • M.A.F. says:

All the stuff he did before Romeo and Juliet/Titanic I like (those two movies, btw, I didn’t like). Everything after, not so much. I mean, the editing on the Aviator drove me up the wall and I fell asleep during Gangs of New York.

  14. livia says:

I don’t think he has done them. Not everyone wants to try them or has intrest in doing them. And besides, look at how many child actors do drugs and then are wiped off the face of the earth. Leonardo Dicaprio, Elijah Wood, Natalie Portman, The Potter kids, etc were all child actors but I think the reason they ended up so sccuesful is because they stayed away from partying/ doing drugs when they were in their teens or early 20s. I don’t think people like Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus, who brag about doing drugs, will end up successful like them. I think it will destroy their career.

    • laura says:

Well, Philippe Hoffman Seymour was (sadly) an amazingly successful actor with a great career, highly respected, and he did drugs all along ! it is a fact that most of hollywood actor/producers do and try drugs…So it is not systematic that you will fail in hollywood because you do drugs

      • laura says:

I loved Philippe hoffman seymour…he was humble, nice to everybody, he did not like the hollywood lifestyle while Leo is very different.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I got the impression that PSH relapsed, after a 20 year abstinence, last year….I wouldn’t consider him to be doing drugs ‘all along’….he relapsed HARD.

      • mercy says:

Sometimes the most humble, sensitive and hard working have a difficult time in this business.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

Yes, it is well established that PSH had a relapse after being sober for over 20 yrs. Let’s not tarnish his memory with false characterization.

I think Leo is talking about drugs because Wolf of Wall Street (which I haven’t seen, just have heard/read about it) could be accused of glamorizing drugs. And who knows maybe the PSH thing made him want to speak out.

I tend to believe he’s never been a habitual user of anything hardcore. I saw him at a dinky little house party in NYC once about 15 yrs ago (we are the same age), it was not a druggy or glamorous party at all, just kind of a lame boozer. He was however, on a bed, surrounded by women. No joke. I did a double take because I thought “Who is that weirdo on the bed?” and we had eye contact, and he sort of beckoned me with his eyes. I ignored him and went to the bathroom, then left the party w/my friends because it sucked. I know it sounds unlikely, but it’s true. I was too old for Titanic to make me all swoony over him, and being a little hipster brat in NY we just didn’t get that excited about most actors. He seemed like a frat boy. Now, nearly 40 and looking back I’m like whaaat. Ah, life.

      • Sullivan says:

Laura, PSH didn’t “do drugs all along.” According to PSH, he was clean and sober for 20 years. He had only recently relapsed. His relapse does not negate the preceding 20 years of sobriety.

      • laura says:

Drugs means also alcohol for me… he used to drink, he admitted it. i am not tarnishing any memory as i am a big fan….

    • livia says:

I am talking about child stars who do drugs in Hollywood. Yes, Daniel Radcliffe was a drinker, but he never got in trouble with the law or I never heard stories of him partying and doing drugs during the Potter days. He turned out fine. As for Leo, he was also a child star, but he didn’t get caught up with the parties or the drugs. He made a successful transistion from child to adult actor. Very few have achieved that. The only others one I can think who made that tranistion it are like Natalie Portman or Elijah Wood or Ryan Gosling, JGL,etc.
And so many child stars have had their lives and careers destroyed because of drugs and other problems. Maculnay Culkin, Lindsay Lohan, Edward Furlong, are examples of that. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Bieber or Cryus end up joining the list of has-beens or former child star-turn drug addict. They are not very talented anyways the both of them. Its not like they will reach an A list or atleast maintain a solid, proper career right?

      • Evi says:

Just because we don’t hear about it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Many high profile actors have great PR teams that sweep stuff under the carpet.

  15. Jenns says:

At least he doesn’t sh*t talk about other actors–unlike Clooney.

  16. Tiffany says:

I believe him on the drug thing. Because I think his mother would seriously kick his backside up and down a VS runway if he ever jepordized his career because of drug use.

  17. LAK says:

I can believe he hasn’t taken drugs. He parties alot, but it doesn’t seem to be substance abuse. His posse on the other hand…..

  18. Tippy says:

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he claims to have never used illegal drugs. He seems pretty grounded for a former child actor.

It’s also refreshing to hear a celebrity talk about how appreciative they are for their profession and lifestyle instead of comparing acting or singing to combat duty in Afghanistan.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That’s one of the things that I really like about Leo. I’ve seen quite a few interviews where he makes it a point to say that he is so lucky to be able to do what he loves for a living, how he’s lucky that he’s successful in an industry where 99% of other people, talented people don’t make it, and he has.

  19. laura says:

I used to like Leo but recently I read an article about Clooney stating that one time Clooney and his buddies wanted to play a basketball game and Leo agreed but insisting that Leo and “his gang plays very seriously at a very “high’ level. Leo and his friends ended up loosing…. Clooney said that Leo was surrounded by “yes” people and was not in reality. I totally get that that, he is trying to be cool clubbing, dating victoria’s secret models, but at 39 it is a little bit sad…..

    • mercy says:

Clooney shouldn’t have said it, but it rings true.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

I’m sure Leo’s posse are Yes people, but at least his girlfriends…well who knows what they are besides pretty yacht accessories, but Clooney shouldn’t be throwing stones when his g.f.’s are widely regarded as a succession of paid p.r. ladies. and the age difference is pretty much the same as Leo’s with his women. So a lack of give and take/mature adult relationships is something they have in common seemingly. I’m finding Clooney increasingly icky with age (Leo is a different kind of icky, but at least he doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not).

  20. QQ says:

Model Pussy is NOT a Class A Narcotic so I’ll believe him (or is that an antidrug PSA?)

  21. GeeMoney says:

I believe him when he says he hasn’t done drugs… and it’s nice to know that not all celebrities out there are cokeheads.

Love, love, love Leo… but I’m pulling for Matthew McConaughey to win the Oscar this year.

  22. Suzy from Ontario says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if he avoided drugs. His step-brother is a drug addict so I can believe that seeing that, as well as growing up in a neighborhood with a lot of drug activity, he is smart enough not to fall into that trap.

  23. ashley says:

I believe him,why do drugs when you know the outcome? Live your life leo,you only live once!! I hope he’ll win an oscar this year,he deserves it.

  24. JaDeRu says:

I seriously doubt that he’s never “done” drugs, but I just think he never got trapped into addiction. I kind of agree with everyone that thinks it’s just campaign mode. Honestly I’ve seen more ridiculous things that some celebrities expect us to believe.
I still don’t want Leo to win though. I mean he’s overdue, but WOW was not his best and not even good enough to be nominated in my opinion. Too many great, great performances this year. I would actually feel bad for him if he did win a pity Oscar. My money’s on Chiwetel in an upset and hoping we get an amazing “WTF??” reaction shot-ala-TaylorSwifty from McConaughey! 😀

  25. Paloma says:

“I’ve never done drugs; however, I do vapid young models.” … Leo D.

  26. Miss M says:

Go Leo, work for your Oscar! You deserve it. If AnniE Hathaway (who has one third of your talent) tried so much to gets her, you should try too!

  27. homegrrrrl says:

Why would he be drinking coca cola and taking in nicotine if he’s “never” touched drugs; that screams of non-sequitous behavior. Let’s safely assume he’s an alcoholic or has some other chemical vice or addiction. Yes, he’s an artist, but his serial modelizing behavior is hollyweird/normal. I don’t feel LD can be smug or “above it all”.

  28. cro-girl says:

Anyone I know who grew up in poverty and in neighbourhood’s clearly affected by drug abuse and prostitution and managed to escape that sort of future, has no interest in drugs whatsoever. And with most of them its not because they were THAT emotionally affected by what they saw but rather because it wasn’t new, it wasn’t attractive. I grew up in a European household and alcohol was readily available, by the time I made it to high school drinking just wasn’t all that appealing to me. I didnt have any poor experiences with it and my parents didnt get smashed daily, it was just another part of life… like toothpaste.

  29. Jane says:

MM very best friend, Texas boys. Is bike cheat Lance Armstrong- says a lot. Both creaps! Go Leo!

  30. Jane says:

I used to like this site last few years, lately… comment getting tacky like the other sites? QQ etc

  31. Pinchofsalt says:

I believe Leo has never done hard drugs, but that is not really the point – he has put in the hard work consistently and performed remarkably in countless movies. He deserves to win the Oscar this year! He is a fine actor and seems to be a fine human being too.

  32. Lark says:

I can believe him, but I also believe he’s talking about “hard drugs” and not just drugs in general. I think a lot of Hollywood people don’t consider weed or pills like oxy (if prescribed and taken in moderation) as “drugs” even though I think oxy can be dangerous. When Leo or actors say they don’t do drugs, I generally get the feeling they are saying they don’t do coke/heroin/pop pills like it is candy.

  33. lunchcoma says:

He’s extremely likable in this interview, and I don’t think the “Marty”/”kid” stuff is bragging. Why would he need to brag about that relationship? I think most people who are paying even a little bit of attention would assume it exists, or at least it’s hard for me to believe the two men (each of whom can pick and choose projects) would work together so frequently without there being a degree of affection between them. I’ll stay neutral on the drugs claim. I’m skeptical, but I suppose it’s possible.

That being said, I’d prefer he doesn’t win the Oscar this year. He deserves one, but I found Wolf of Wall Street to be a very overrated movie and didn’t feel his performance was either his personal best or the best of the year.

  34. Evi says:

DiCaprio doesn’t do drugs. He does models. Models are his drug.

  35. ParisPucker says:

whomever said ‘Jonah Hill’ is adorable/cute needs a pinch. This guy is anything but. I remember some interview with him where he kept whining about not being revered as a serious actor…Really ‘Night at the Museum’? Just embrace that you’ve been successful in comedy, ain’t no shame in that! You sucking up to every A-lister is a bit pathetic. Sad that he can’t embrace who he is. Jim Carrey did, and look how things turned out for him? Truman Show showed that he was a great dramatic actor too. Let the work speak for you instead for you. I liked him until he opened his mouth and tried too hard.
