Cate Blanchett in bejeweled Armani at the Oscars: gorgeous or too fussy?

wenn21145458

It’s been… how long? Twelve hours or so since I first saw Cate Blanchett in this Armani gown, and I still don’t know how I feel about it. I think… ??? On anyone else, I probably would have judged this gown harshly. But because it’s La Blanchett, I’m examining my feelings more closely because I don’t want to hate it. In motion, the effect was that Armani had simply glued jewels onto Cate’s naked body. But in still photos, you can make out more of the details. There are pearls and discs and crystals and beads, all attached to a nude netting.

I guess I like it…? I don’t love it, but I also don’t think it’s a “bad” dress. I hoped for some huge dress drama from Cate, like the dress would be super-controversial and we would be fighting about it all day. I’ll say this: I think I like the top part much more than the skirt. Something about the skirt is throwing off the look, right? And I’ll give Cate credit for having flawless hair and makeup. I think this is the prettiest her hair is ever looked. PS… Cate’s jewelry is Chopard. Her huge earrings were opals set in white gold. Lupita wore opals too – she had an opal ring.

And here’s Cate’s competition, Meryl Streep. Meryl wore Lanvin. Thoughts? I feel like Meryl has no f—ks to give and absolutely nothing to prove. She wore a dress that she thought would be flattering and comfortable, and that’s what we got. It’s not high-fashion. It wasn’t meant to be. I do love Meryl and her husband Don Gummer together though – they’re such a handsome couple!

I LOVE THIS DRESS! So elegant. It’s pretty and princess-y without being too much imo.

    • Patricia says:

I agree! My jaw dripped. Kaiser I don’t think you should overthink this, it is just amazing. She looks ethereal and her figure is amazing. Don’t even think about how it would look on anyone else, there’s no point because Kate is in a class of her own. This is my favorite look so far!

      • Penny says:

Agreed! She stunned yet again!!! And was I the only startled with her acceptance speech – thanking Woody for casting her? It was the right thing to do inspite of the controversy re: Dylan’s open letter calling her out! She has nothing to do with his family drama. She is soooooo classy.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Me too! I love the dress and the fact that it’s on Cate makes it even more stunning.
Maryl always has such flat hair. I wish she would do something with it..

    • Diana says:

I thought it looked amazing on camera. In pics is not as bedazzling but it still is a beautiful dress.

    • lylaooo says:

i love this woman! so elegant, classic, femenine.. beautiful !!

    • Zigggy says:

I think it was really pretty too, though it’s not a dress I would normally imagine liking. There’s something really gorgeous about it. She kind of seems like a snobby b*tch though…

    • sienna says:

I love this dress, but do not think it is the best choice for a nominee (winner). I feel that neutrals are for stars who attend, and big pops of colour are reserved for nominees.

Had she not been nominated, I think it would have been perfect.

  2. Audrey says:

I can’t explain why, but I really like it.

She manages to somehow pull it off

    • LadyMTL says:

I feel the same way, and this is normally a dress that I would hate. Maybe because it’s Cate and in my eyes she can do no wrong.

    • Juliette says:

I loved the neckline on her. Plus, I think this is a dress to wear when you know you are going to win. Gold to match the golden statute. It’s a winner’s dress.

  3. Tx says:

I loved Cates Dress! It’s gorgeous and she looked just amazing.

  4. Curious Cole says:

I don’t feel strongly about Cate’s choice. I do not love it, but it is very much Cate’s personal style and I respect that. She was perfectly styled though, and her hair was great.

    • Kiddo says:

I feel the same way. I respect the work and artistry that went into it and yet, this seems like her typical go to non/color scheme, and I’m neutral on it. Don’t love it and don’t hate it.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, I think she is beautiful and the dress is beautiful but they don’t look that great together. When she wears the right colors, her skin looks so luminous. She looked a little washed out. I think it’s too young for her and too pale for her. Or something. Was not wowed.

  5. len says:

I LOVED her earrings. The dress is beautiful but I agree, not enough drama.

  6. Lucy2 says:

I really like it on Cate, probably wouldn’t so much on others. I think she looked great.
Meryl looked good too – she seems to go for elegant and simple, not high fashion.

  7. Micah says:

I love that dress! She looked amazing in it!

I also loved Meryl Streep’s outfit as well. It looked easy and elegant.

  8. alexc says:

I thought the dress was beautiful. If you saw it up close, when she was being interviewed, you could see all of the gorgeous beading and detail. Personally I think with her fair skin she looks better in jewel tones but overall a lovely choice.

    • emmie_a says:

Yep. It’s a stunning dress. But not the best choice for Cate. She needs some color. And some drama. She can pull off high fashion so I wish she would’ve gone that route.

I loved her acceptance speech. One of the best of the evening.

    • cr says:

Jewel tones would have been better.

There ended up being waaaaaay too much beigeness on the RC this year.

  9. Abigail says:

Hate Cate’s dress. I probably wouldn’t hate it as much on someone else, but it is so underwhelming for Cate. I thought she would do something so much better than this run-of-the-mill dress.

  10. blue marie says:

At first glance, it reminds me of ice skating. I think I might end up liking it but I don’t really like what’s happening around the shoulders. Is it supposed to have sleeves or not?

And I love that Meryl will rock whatever she wants, her and hubs are cute together.

    • danielle says:

I agree, her dress was better than Angelina’s but both were ice skateresque. Loved meryl, great dress for her.

    • Tulip Garden says:

Agree with ya’ll that Meryl looks really good. She knows her body, her age, and her stature so this is completely the route that she can take and still be the center of conversation. That said, anyone else really delighted with the shimmy-shake she undertook with Pharrell? Sex-ay I think 🙂

  11. yennefer says:

” the effect was that Armani had simply glued jewels onto Cate’s naked body” – that was my first thought too! And THAT’S EXACTLY why it was pure perfection. Agree about the skirt, hair and jewelry Kaiser. Great minds think alike.
On the other hand, I cannot stop thinking how AWESOME would it be if Armani actually did glue jewels on La Blanchett’s pale, naked body… Mmm. That’s something to dream about.

  12. chloe says:

I liked both of these dresses, Cate’s hair and makeup were flawless.

  13. OriginallyBlue says:

Meh. It’s a nice dress, but it seems too monochromatic, with her hair, her skin, and the dress, she really just looks naked with jewels glued on. I think something with a bit more colour would have been nice.

  14. Sarah says:

I loved this dress! As soon as I saw it I thought she was a Golden Girl and was going to look lovely with her gold statuette. She rocked. As did Meryl. Does anyone have more fun than Meryl?

  15. smee says:

Cate B’s dress has a costume feeling to it. I like the cut of the skirt part of the dress, but I’m a little bored with the nude “color”. The beading is probably very beautiful if you got close enough to see it, but it doesn’t look that amazing from a distance.

  16. QQ says:

I dont actively hate it cause it’s HER (l LOVED the earrings!) but this shit is borderline Marchesa (we know this is as close to insult as it gets with couture!)

  17. L says:

It’s boring, and expected and other women have worn some version of it. And I expect more from Cate. The illusion netting and lining make her look like a big beige block with her hair/skin/dress all being the same shade, and the neckline and top were puckering throughout her interviews.

The sequins photograph better, but up close they looked really cheap. Disappointing and I normally love everything she wears. Just not original or special enough for a best actress winner.

  18. I LOVED this look–this is how you do a high fashion ice skater’s dress….I’d be too worried that everything would fall off though–I had a church dress with a neckline that had chunky ‘jewels’ (they were plastic–dark brown and tan), and I had to stop wearing it because a toddler yanked off the ‘jewels’–they were barely sewn on.

  19. Ice Maiden says:

Many of Cate’s recent looks have been underwhelming (perhaps deliberately so) but this is GORGEOUS! Everything about her look – the dress, the hair, the make-up, the Cate – is perfect. And I’m betting that pictures don’t even do it justice – like most pale shimmery gowns, it probably looked even more stunning in ‘real life’.

  20. agentscully says:

That woman behind Streep’s husband looks like she could give Tan Mom a run for her money. Yikes.

  21. Kinchicago says:

Can I just add, in a depressing sea of oompa-loompa-orange spray tans, tarantula eyelashes and Katface injections and surgeries- how gorgeous, luminously radiant Cate Blanchett refreshingly appears to me? She’s glowing!

  22. queenfreddiemercury says:

    I really like her dress.

  23. Ice Queen says:

    Cate looks like a goddess.

  24. Michele says:

I loved the etherealness of this dress – the nude fabric made it look like she was wrapped in a jeweled cloud. The structure of the top bothered me – it seemed ice skaterish and unfinished. Hated the ruffled hem at the bottom.
Thought an updo with some diamond earring (non-drop) would have been better. Her earrings were awesome but not with this dress.

  25. Megan says:

Her makeup and hair were beautiful and she looked beautiful. However, this was with out a doubt one of the worst dressed of the night.

  26. Grant says:

Snooze. Throw in a few ruffles on the hem and it would have looked like a Marchesa monstrosity.

  27. shellybean says:

Cate looked like perfection. I also think that Meryl looked great.

  28. Lucy says:

They both looked fantastic! And Cate’s speech was wonderful.

  29. Maritza says:

OMG I love that dress, she looked absoluted fabulous!

  30. Tara says:

Everything about Cate’s look at the Oscars was gorgeous. Totally flawless IMO. I just wish she won for a movie that didn’t involve Woody Allen.

  31. marjiscott says:

Did I hear Cate Blanchett in her Oscar speech tell Julia Roberts to “Suck it” from the podium? When they asked her backstage afterwards, she seemed to confirm it! Whoa!

    • Delta Juliet says:

Yeah but when they cut to Julia she was laughing so I figure it’s some inside joke.

    • Lucrezia says:

I read an interview where Cate said she nearly missed the presentation of her award because she was drinking at the bar with Julia and they lost track of time.

So I’d say she was definitely just kidding around.

It’s standard Aussie (and British) humour to insult people you actually like. In an odd way it’s a sign of trust/respect – you expect them to get the joke. But it can backfire spectacularly if someone thinks you’re actually being sincere.

  32. Janet says:

Meryl Streep always manages to look frumpy, but, hey, who cares?

I just wish she would dye her hair back to that platinum color she wore in “The Devil Wears Prada”. She looked drop-dead gorgeous in that movie and decidedly unfrumpy.

  33. Camille (The Original) says:

I LOVE it. One of my picks for best dressed at the Oscars. So pretty, she looked fab.

  34. Pinky says:

She looked very elegant. Love it.

  35. Sachi says:

Meryl looked great. She can wear whatever she wants, I don’t care.

Cate’s dress reminds me of the dress she wore to the Globes, except that one was black and had lace, also by Armani. Don’t know how I feel about this one…she looks nice and the detailing is high quality, but I thought this dress was boring while the Globes dress was beautiful in its Gothic chic look.

  36. Kosmos says:

She looked perfect and stunning in every way……she’s a dynamic actress, so most other actresses cannot touch that….she probably deserved to win; however, I really wanted Sandra Bullock to get it, darn……

  37. Violet says:

She looks so out of this world beautiful, simply stunning and ethereal. I love the bling she choose and how it complement the dress. For me it was the dress of the night.

  38. Vilodemeanus says:

I love Cate’s dress, the color is nearly perfect for her skin and maybe it’s the subtly and delicacy in a ball gown that seems off. I love it though, Armani really knows how to dress her, and it’s always so unique with Cate. I wish Meryl would care more, I bet designers would fight gladiator style to dress her but she always looks like she shops at Nieman’s for her dresses. I don’t think she cares at all about designer duds.
