Taylor Swift in pink Oscar de la Renta at the 2014 Met Gala: classic or dated?

wenn21320826

Sarah Jessica Parker was going to be the lead lady of this post about Oscar de la Renta gowns at the 2014 Met Gala, but then I saw Taylor Swift’s look. There were rumors that Swifty was going to wear one of her go-to, favorite designers, J. Mendel. But she went for Oscar de la Renta instead, which I think was a good choice. She followed the dress code and looked like an old-school society swan. Like, this is how debutantes in the 1950s looked. Swifty really knew how to work her train too, and the bustle is really pretty. This suits her, and the whole look manages to look classic rather than dated. The only thing I would change? Her lip color. I don’t like the red lip with this pink dress.

Sarah Jessica Parker was the co-chair of this year’s Met Gala (along with Bradley Cooper, which is weird, right?). SJP wore Oscar de la Renta, one of her favorite designers. I would imagine this is custom-made for her. I find it very costumey, especially with the way she’s styled it. The gloves are a bit much, but they’re probably for the dress code/theme. I hated her hair when I first saw it, but now that I’m really looking at it… I kind of love it. Her makeup looks good too. And her date was Andy Cohen!

Claire Danes had my least favorite Oscar de la Renta look of this year’s Met Gala. This dress feels like what it probably was: the afterthought gown, after the designers had worked on SJP and Swifty’s gowns. It just looks like the designers didn’t know where to go, when either half would have made a suitable start for one good gown. Either do taffeta OR velvet, not both. Also: Hugh Dancy looks really good with that beard.

I never liked SJP, including her fashion choices… Did Matthew Broderick stay home? :/

I like Taylor’s dress but the lip colour is a no-no…

    • V4Real says:

Dido to not liking SJP, her look or her style.

I like Taylor’s dress but not on her. The hair and the red lips are not working at all.

      • kimber says:

It looks like taylor pulled that dress out of a beach bag, shook it out and said whatevs. Her hair and makeup up is no different than how she wears it for a scheduled paparazzi photoshoot of her as “everyday taylor”

      • cat says:

Kimber so true re: hair and makeup same as “everyday taylor!” Perfect way to say it. I like that she has fun with the every day papping in a way but it also is so contrived.

I don’t love this look that much – I usually like her choices – but I do like the bustle.

      • kri says:

Taylor, please give Christian Bale’s comb-over back. If I see another baby pink ballgown, I am going to start drinking.

    • Kiki says:

Yeah that’s a good question… Why is her husband never with her at these events?

  2. Dawn says:

I like all three dresses and think they all look wonderful! Good for them for not taking the cheap and vulgar hooker on a holiday look! Yep I give all three an A-!

  3. QQ says:

Meh Ive seen her swanning about in pink and beige and glittery dresses for…Eons Now?

    • Ag says:

yeah, what is she now, in her 20s? she’s still trying for the sweet 16 look on a regular basis. meh.

  4. lucy2 says:

Claire’s looks like the first draft of SJP’s. And everything sits so low, the dress somehow makes her look oddly proportioned.
I kind of love SJP’s dress, this is one of the few times costumey is OK. Dislike the gloves and Cinnabon hair though.
Taylor’s is OK, but I agree about the lipstick.

    • Liv says:

Claire obviously kept a few pounds after giving birth, she looks much better than before.

    • Jayna says:

That’s what I noticed. She looks like she’s got super short legs in that dress It didn’t flatter her

  5. don't kill me i'm french says:

Taylor’s look is a few too mature
I’m not crazy of SJP’s look but she fits with the theme “white tie”

  6. KJP says:

I think Claire Danes is getting prettier with age

  7. Janet says:

That’s the first time I’ve seen Taylor Swift look bad on the red carpet.

  8. Steph says:

Ugh…do not like Taylor’s prom dress and why was the horrible Andy Cohen standing with SJP? Andy takes too much pleasure in making women look bad with his vile housewife shows.

  9. Kate says:

I’m no huge fan of Swifty but I think she looks really pretty here. Sue me.

  10. Kiddo says:

    60’s revisited. Not impressed. Next.

  11. paola says:

I’m sorry but i actually love SJP in that dress. You can always count on her for the va-va-voom effect. And she owns it like Carrie Bradshaw would.

    • Kiddo says:

She thinks she’s Audrey Hepburn. She does this genre far too often. The only thing unique on the dress is the train, and then part of me finds it hokey and commercial, like a walking advert. The rest of the look is 60’s ballroom gown, nothing special.

      • Belle Epoch says:

Is SIGNING DRESSES a thing now? What is this, a GAP sweatshirt? Did she get paid to advertise? This is product placement. Dress could have been nice. How gauche.

      • Kiddo says:

        @Belle Epoch. Thank you, exactly.

      • paola says:

Yes.. but at least she can pull it off! Have you seen Kate Upton?
        AWFUL

      • Kiddo says:

True, but Kate Upton’s calling card is boobs, SJP is supposed to be the fashion ‘it’ girl.

      • paola says:

Oh my god that dress KAte Upton wore is just a punch in your face. I can’t believe Dolce and Gabbana slated Victoria Beckham for not being a real designer and then they send Kate Upton out in that GODAWFUL monstrosity.

      • Tessy says:

@Belle Epoch I agree. That signature at the bottom of the dress is the height of tackiness.

    • j.eyre says:

I like that is an homage to an actual Charles James design with a modern update – as co-chair, it was a nice gesture. I kind of think that is with Oscar de la Renta “signed” it. I thought she looked amazing.

      • mia girl says:

I agree. I loved SJP’s look. A little over the top, yes, but perfect for the theme and the event.

  12. Froggy says:

Claire’s dress looks like it’s the wrong size.

    • Lee says:

Exactly – and it’s drifting down her body. So unflattering.

    • mia girl says:

Swift’s dress is also the wrong size. It’s too big on her around the waist and hips.

  13. Dani2 says:

Taylor looks amazingly well put together as usual but I really feel like I’ve seen several variations of this same look.

Claire looks basic – as usual.

  14. LadyMTL says:

I actually really like SJP’s dress with the exception of the signature at the back. It’s like…yes, I know it’s Oscar de la Renta, do we need him to autograph it?

Swifty looks nice, but it’s nothing unexpected. I don’t mind the red lip, it sort of fits with the overall theme.

    • Lee says:

I thought the same thing with the signature. It is the one off-note in the otherwise gorgeous ensemble. She looks great.

    • Algernon says:

As mentioned up-thread, SJP’s dress is a direct homage to a famous Charles James design. I think Oscar de la Renta’s signature was to acknowledge this is his take on that other, classic gown. When I first saw SJP, I thought she was wearing the actual petal gown, then she turned around and I saw the train and went, “Oh it’s an homage.” I loved this look, it’s dramatic and theme appropriate.

  15. LadyRay says:

Taylor always plays it safe. I don’t like her dress at all.

  16. Felice says:

Is Sarah Jessica Parker the only one who wore gloves?? The fashion this year was ridiculous. I wanted ball gowns and gloves.

  17. SamiHami says:

Swifty looks really good here, but I do agree about the lip color.

SJP looks okay, but what did she do to her hair? I can’t decide which is worse-hers or Rihanna’s stuck-my-head-in-a-blender look. Do neither of these women own mirrors?

Danes, I just don’t like her, so I’m probably never going to like anything she’s in.

  18. Original Tessa says:

I don’t know what it is about SJP, but she can wear the shit out of clothes. She looks ridiculous, and fabulous at the same time.

  19. Nighty says:

The worst of the three is Jessica’s but it’s isn’t very bad… Feeling sorry for fashion….

  20. Lexie says:

Yes Swifty looks like a ’50s debutante… except for the fakey-fakey implants. I hate when they make a little shelf like that. Just doesn’t seem natural.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Thank you. All I could see in that picture was holyfakeboobsbatboy! They are really horrible.

  21. PunkyMomma says:

I absolutely love SJP’s hair. The signature on the train of her gown is nothing short of gauche.

  22. OTHER RENEE says:

Omg I still cannot believe her dress has Oscar de la Renta blazoned across the back in red! How cheap! Do like the dress though.

I refuse to be a walking billboard and will not buy anything that has a name across the chest or elsewhere. It’s just beyond tacky. Starting amd ending with Bebe.

    • Tessy says:

Me too. Not even a little logo. I might consider wearing a signature if they pay me to advertise for them. Otherwise, no. Never.

  23. Marigold says:

I think SJP is a glove wearer to cover her hands like Madonna does. Sure, it goes with the event but I think she’d have found a way to include gloves regardless of a theme.

    Swift’s boobs-sigh.

    • Becky1 says:

Taylor’s too thin for those implants. With all of her success and a fan base of young girls I still don’t get why she felt like she needed them. Oh, well-I guess we all have our insecurities.

  24. poppy says:

TS, ugh what is with the lank, greasy hair? and her makeup looks like the same spackled on business she wears to run errands. she needs to tone it down, way down for everyday. the dress looks like she picked it because it enhances her bolt ons.

claire’s bodice is too long and emphasizes her extremely long torso. which makes her look extremely short.

and oscar de la renta, that is some tacky, terrible awfulness.

  25. Maggi says:

I think Taylor looks terrible. She has been looking so adorable in her street clothes lately but this is just ugly. The material is hideous, wrinkly and tacky. The silvery pattern all over it is just ugh. And her boobs look bad pushed up like that.

  26. Allie says:

I usually begrudgingly am jealous of swifty on the red carpets but I hate this look. Too cutesy, too prom-ish. I’m so over her red lipstick, she always looks so much better without it. And I hate her hair! She’s so tall and thin, she could work the shit out of so many outfits but then she plays safe. Ugh.

SJP owned it. The hair is awesome and I feel like the met ball is the perfect occasion for that dress,

  27. captain says:

Love the dress, agree about lipstick. Perhaps she’s got some Gwen Stefani thing going, so she can’t change it..

  28. serena says:

Wtf is going on with Tay-Tay’s bolts-on? It’s that or the top was kind of poorly made. Anyway I like her make-up and hair but I don’t like her whole look, can be the dress colour that really does nothing for her or just that the dress is too fussy.. I don’t know, I just don’t like it.

On the other hand I liked Claire Danes’s dress, it looks simple but beautiful with less going on than SPJ and Tay-Tay (too much of everything).

  29. Jes1632 says:

SJP is just so fun on the back wasn’t expecting to see that pattern….but I like it

  30. Tig says:

Here to second the opinion that SJP can rock clothes, esp over the top gowns! I like Taylor’s as well, but the red lip color was a bit harsh.

  31. cro-girl says:

I love them all… first thread here where I loved all the looks. SJP looks a bit like a couture billboard but its SJP so it’s acceptable. Clare Danes… she looks beautiful, her hair isnt so yellow a la Carrie Mathews.

  32. shellybean says:

Sarah Jessica completely nailed the theme. This is glorious! Appalling that so much space here has been wasted on inferior or off-theme looks, and she only gets TWO pictures. For shame!

  33. M says:

SJP’s hair reminds me of one of Helen Hunt’s hairstyles in Girls Just Want to Have Fun!

  34. Jessica says:

Claire Danes always looks terrible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look good.

  35. Laura says:

So glad someone FINALLY said something about Taylor’s distractingly plastic boobage. She annoys me anyway, but I find it extra irritating that she’s in her mid-twenties and still trying to come off as this pure, virginal, kitschy teenager from the 50’s as far as her fashion choices, while at the same time showing off that boob job. It’s literally a walking contradiction, as are Taylor and her lyrics. “Woe is me, I’m so nerdy and different and nobody understands me because she wears short skirts and I wear t shirts with fake boobs stuffed into them.” It bothers me because you know America’s Permanently Teenaged Sunshine Princess would NEVER cop to it.

  36. A Fan says:

Claire Danes wins because she still has her real tits.

I shudder thinking about a generation of boys who are growing up thinking that fake grapefruit tits (even little ones) are normal.

    [*How’s that for f**king with nature…*]

  37. Jayna says:

I think people that don’t pay homage to the theme should be barred from entering the ball. LOL

  38. Bridget says:

Taylor Swift wouldn’t have gotten to choose who she wore to the Met Gala. Wintour strictly manages the guest list, including who attends as the guest of which designer, amd supposedly also gets final approval on the gowns. For example, last year when Timberlake dropped out, she matched up Biel and Valli instead of Tom Ford (who Timberlake was matched with) because Biel didn’t rate Tom Ford on her own. And for the most part, the guests wear what the designers hand them. There may be a little bit of collaboration between the designer and the star, but this isn’t like the Oscars or the Emmys with racks of clothes for the star to choose from.

  39. Kosmos says:

Claire’s hair at least looks a bit natural and slightly relaxed. I tire of seeing the “fixed” too severe look on women. Example, Charlize Theron. In fact, I like these formal gowns paired with somewhat relaxed hair, whether up or down, but something softening. With the makeup being applied to the max, it just becomes too hard a look IMO. I agree with Claire’s dress, though, that somehow it makes her look too short, but I don’t think she’s that short, really. With a longer gown, some of the much taller women look perfect in this look. One thing I don’t like is the crunched bosom, making the breast look too small or squished under the fabric, as in Suki’s gown….

  40. Ally8 says:

SJP looks like a fool. The dress is hokey, but the witchy hairdo and overdone eyeliner really kill it.
