Emma Stone: ‘Keeping weight on is a struggle for me, especially under stress’

wenn21320410

I’ve been wary of discussing Emma Stone’s weight loss for several reasons. For one, I don’t want to sound concern-trolly (although I am concerned). Two, Emma has been dealing with some family stuff for months, and I think that’s been taking a toll. Now, all that being said, I’ve watched some of the interviews she’s done lately (especially the Graham Norton one) and her thinness has made me wince when she’s in motion. So, Emma did something I wish more people would do: she talks about how the “thin” criticisms affect her and why it’s difficult for her to put on weight (and she doesn’t sound full of it):

Emma Stone on dealing with haters…
“Sometimes it’s really easy to shrug it off and other times, things have pinched more. I think most of us are like that, right? Someone lobs a snide remark your way, and sometimes you can laugh about it, while other times you can actually feel the sting. I’m actively working hard on learning to appreciate yourself no matter what. If what someone else says can easily derail you, it means your sense of self isn’t that firmly established in the first place. It’s an inside job. You’re beautiful and worthy and totally unique. People insult each other based on their own insecurities—even though it may feel personal, it really never is. Really. Seriously.”

Emma Stone on body confidence…
“It can be really challenging in today’s world for anyone—especially girls and women—to feel good about their bodies. No matter how things look from the outside, we can all be super critical of ourselves and of our image in the mirror. I’ve seen articles or comments that have addressed my weight, or ‘caving to pressure to be thin.’ Keeping weight on is a struggle for me— especially when I’m under stress, and especially as I’ve gotten older. That’s the way my genes have decided to go, and things will change as time goes on, as does everything. So when completely untrue statements are made about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend. Thing is, people have a right to imagine what they want to imagine. My job at those moments is to tell myself the truth. Am I taking care of myself in a healthy way? Am I respecting myself and being responsible? And over and over, I answer yes to that question. Then I remind myself to be kind to myself, and as slightly ridiculous as it may sound, to treat myself in the same gentle way I’d want to treat a daughter of mine. It really helps.”

Emma Stone on what makes her feel powerful…
“Wanting something, putting all my energy toward it, working hard and following through. New things I never knew I could do. Commitment. Making somebody laugh—there’s no better feeling than that.”

[From Seventeen]

I like that she says, “Thing is, people have a right to imagine what they want to imagine.” It’s not always hyper-criticism or concern-trolling when some people are just making statements rather than judgments and either way, people are going to make statements/judgments about how people look. I think Emma is telling the truth about how difficult it’s been for her to put weight on and how stress affects her weight. That happens. Some people hit the cupcakes when they’re under stress. Some people lose their appetites. I like this too: “I remind myself… to treat myself in the same gentle way I’d want to treat a daughter of mine.” That’s an excellent way to deal with it.

I really like this girl. She thinks like I do, oftentimes. And I also lose my appetite when stressed. The chocolate-fests occur when I’m HAPPY.

    • GeeMoney says:

Me too. I was blessed with that wonderful gene where when I’m stressed out or upset, I don’t eat at all. And just like you, Sixer… I eat when I’m happy, which is 99% of the time!

I really like Emma Stone… and I wish more of the Hollywood girls her age were as cool and smart as she is.

PS – Some people are just LUCKY to have really good metabolisms, and she just might be one of those people. Or, she works out and doesn’t eat that much to maintain her thinness. It’s not too hard to do that at 25.

    • nofkksgiven says:

i agree with this – i gain weight when i’m in a good place, during stress or times of transition even without changing my eating my weight will drop just from that “spinning internally” feeling…it’s interesting. I can’t imagine the stress or pressure that comes with her line of work at that level…summer blockbuster coming up can def have someone shed a quick 8lb they can’t really afford to lose. she does look tiny though…

      • Oh La La says:

I would think her stress would come from her mother’s illness.

      • darbie says:

My mom and brother are the same way with stress- they feel sick to their stomachs and cannot eat. My dad and I, however, eat 3 hearty meals a day regardless of circumstances. It must be hard for Emma. Her industry loves adores waif-figures so there will always be pressure and stress can certainly cause some people to lose their appetites. Emma seems like a nice woman, I hope she is healthy and being kind to herself.

    • Bridget says:

I love Emma Stone, and I totally get it that while some people eat when they’re stressed, others lose their appetite and perhaps work out more as a stress reliever. But with Emma, a lot of the concern-trolling comes from the fact that she’s a good 20 or so pounds thinner than when she first broke out in Super bad, and the more famous she’s gotten, the thinner she’s gotten. Has she bent to pressure from her team or from the studio? Has she just changed her diet? I don’t know, and I can only hope that she is happy and healthy. But I do wish that we could have a real conversation about the ridiculous expectations placed on young women in Hollywood that are placed on them by a bunch of middle aged dudes who apparently think the ideal female is a frail 22 year old. Its not a coincidence that every young actress that hits it big almost immediately drops weight.

      • T.C. says:

Yes stress can make people thin but aging from 23 to 25? Never heard of that. Everyone of these girls once they make it big and start getting sent designer clothes in sample size loses weight to fit those dresses. Every.single.one. of them. Love Emma but I’m not buying it. She’s been losing weight from the day she was cast in big studio Spider-Man. Wouldn’t surprise me if she was told to lose weight for the role. Carey Mulligan too lost a lot of weight when cast in the Great Gatsby, same with that girl for Girl with Dragon Tattoo. They never go back to their original weight after like the men.

    • ctkat1 says:

Yup- my first big heartache, I lost 40 pounds over the summer. I literally had to force myself to eat enough to stay alive. I had no appetite, but a lot of anxiety and stress and so I would take these long, long walks for hours each day. It happens.

Her mother is a cancer survivor (she and her mother got those bird feet tattoos drawn by Paul McCartney to commemorate her mother’s remission), and I have read a few things that allude to the fact that her mother’s cancer has come back. I imagine something like that would affect me like other emotionally difficult things have, and I’d have another huge weight loss.

  2. Birdie says:

Don’t think she is scary skinny. Just Hollywood skinny like most other actresses.

    • Erinn says:

And even then, I think she looks a little healthier than most.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

I guess you never saw her in real.Isaw her at Deauville fest some years ago.GOD she was tiny and weirdly tall .Not a surprise that the designers love her ….she is built as a model

  3. blue marie says:

I love Emma, and really like that she’s willing to talk about it. Smart girl with a good head on her shoulders.

  4. Peuschenhausen says:

Ugh, I am sorry, but NO.

Nothing against Emma Stone, but she’s slimmed down drastically since her Superbad days, which was like what, 6 years ago? This didn’t start recently, she’s been getting skinnier and skinnier for years. I wish actresses like her would actually admit that they felt the pressure to lose weight and be teeny-tiny for Hollywood (like Amanda Seyfried!) instead of projecting this unrealistic image of ‘I’m just naturally skinny’ or ‘I’m thin because of stress’.

    I just can’t with this.

    • Kiddo says:

What’s going on with her family? I don’t read every tidbit, so I’m clueless.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

        Her mother has cancer.

      • Kiddo says:

@maybeiamcrazy, Thanks. That is stressful. Is her mother very ill?

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

@Kiddo I don’t know how ill she is. But i find the criticism against her weight loss disturbing. I had lost a lot of weight when my grandmother got cancer too. It hits too close home, i guess.

      • Kiddo says:

I have lost a ton of weight with situations in my own family, so I can relate. I just don’t always buy the stories put out by actors and actresses, so I guess that was why I asked. I never noticed her weight loss, or commented on it, but I’m not really a fan. I’m neutral. Most of what I know about her is from here.

      • T.C. says:

She started losing weight before her mother got cancer. She first lost a lot of weight right away when cast in Spider-Man I, then lost more weight for Spider-Man II. Again this happens with all the actresses cast in big blockbusters. See Jennifer Lawrence, Scarjo

    • Audrey says:

She managed fine under the stress of starting her career.

      I’m not buying it

      • Erinn says:

Yeah, because starting a career is way more upsetting than possibly losing your mother.

      • Tania says:

Oh my. The stress of starting a career and the stress knowing someone close has cancer isn’t the same. I lost both parents to cancer. Living everyday like its literally their last isn’t something I would wish on anyone. To be honest I hope she’s coping or having some kind of therapy.

      • Little M says:

Oh, Tanya, I am on the same boat. Lost my mom to cancer 2 years ago and now my dad has stage IV bowel cancer. My heart is with you. You must be a very strong person.

I am trying to work and help my dad and, no matter how stressed I am, I am not loosing a single pound! I guess Emma’s metabolism is faster than mine.

Anyway, I always thought having money and a career would make anything in life a bit easier. Even loosing your parents. At least she can get her mom the best treatment and such.

    • Original Tessa says:

This can happen as you age. Some people just lose body mass as they get older. I did. I’m not as active as I used to be and my appetite isn’t a voracious and I have lost a lot of weight without any real reason, no dieting and no “pressure” to be thin. It just happened. I was average weight in high school and most of college, now I’m on the very thin side and I couldn’t tell you the first reason why other than it just happened as I got older and life got more complicated and stressful and my activity level dropped.

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

This! My sister was a cheerleader all throughout high school and weighed about 20 lbs more than she does now but it was all muscle. Now, 12 years later she struggles to keep weight on and is pretty thin. She doesn’t have the muscle mass anymore. I do think this can be genetic as both my parents are thin as well.

      • Original Tessa says:

That’s me. I was really athletic and did three sports in high school. I ate everything in sight just to maintain my energy. All of that has changed, and now I’m just a shell of my old strong body, but none of it has to do with starving myself. I eat regular food and it just doesn’t stick, and I struggle to keep muscle these days when in the past it was really easy. Sometimes you do just get skinny and lose mass as you get older. It happened to me. It’s a real thing.

      • minime says:

So true…why can’t people accept that every person has a specific metabolism?
My sister was also very athletic as a teenager and she used to weight at least 15Kg more than what she weights now. When she hit her middle 20’s she started to loose a lot of weight as she developed some stress-related ulcer. After having her first child, she even lost more weight. People are always telling her that she should eat more and how skinny she looks, but she can’t do anything about it. She actually eats like crazy, a lot of carbs, a lot of meat/fish, sweets, but no one would believe it. I don’t eat a 1/3 of what she eats and I am way heavier than her.

      • HappyMom says:

My husband is like this-it’s a constant battle for him to keep weight on. And our 16 year old daughter is the same-she has his body type, not mine. Also-I snack when I get stressed-not them. They lose their appetite.

      • I’m much thinner than I was 15 years ago, but that’s due to dietary changes and working out.

That could be the case with her–or she could not be eating due to stress, which is very common.

Regardless, I really like what she says here.

      • Bridget says:

Every time there’s a discussion about a star getting too thin, there are always people who come out and say something along the lines of “oh, I eat whatever I want and am a rail, so she must be too” and the like. The same thing happens whenever there’s a story about a celebrity of an advanced maternal age getting pregnant – “Oh, my mother’s sister’s friend got pregnant naturally at 45, so there’s no way Halle Berry actually underwent fertility treatments”. There are always exceptional cases, but we’re looking at a very specific population where it’s a given fact that there is an immense pressure for women to be thin yet project an image that it just comes naturally. The reality is, we start with women that have lovely, natural-ish figures (because even at her heavier iteration, Emma Stone still wasn’t a big girl and had a cute figure) and as the roles get bigger, they get smaller. It’s not a commentary on the actresses, nor is it an accusation that they’re all on drugs, but it IS a commentary on the business that they’re in. They’re supposed to be thin but not muscular, say that they eat plenty of food, and pretend that they’re not being told that they need to be thinner.

It’s not like I’m saying that it’s a human being’s natural state to be fat and that all thin people must therefore be starving themselves. While obesity is rampant in America that’s more a reflection of how much sugary, processed, giant-portioned food the average American eats, and how little exercise the average American gets. On the flip side, if you avoid eating a lot of processed food, and eat some fruits and veggies and get some occasional activity, chances are that you’ll be on the thinner side even if you have some sort of indulgence every once in a while. But Hollywood thin is above and beyond what we’re talking about, and it frustrates me that we’re constantly inundated with images of women that are impossibly thin, but that they’re trying to sell a message that this totally unrealistic standard is reasonable.

    • kcarp says:

I am with you. I like her a lot but whatever. I dont ever in real life see people this skinny maybe the random crack head wandering around the dollar store or something.

    • Eva says:

I’m with you 100%. Maybe it is a reaction to stress (although I am highly sceptical about that) but don’t through the genes card around. It’s not in your genes, you’ve steadily lost weight since hitting the big time. It is the pressure. You don’t necessarily have to admit that but you also don’t have to be misleading about it.. Bugs the hell out of me!!

    • Ashley says:

I agree it’s like she lost it alll after Easy A. At least Amanda was honest.

    • Seán says:

She’s steadily lost weight by year since she first hit the big time, she’s also got older by year since she’s hit the big time. Like people have said, some people lose weight as they get older. I know a few girls in my age group (early 20s) who are that thin and who eat like horses. And while I can’t say for sure, I’m pretty sure none of them are junkies or have eating disorders. I also have a neighbour who is in her early 50s who is really that thin and fragile looking. It’s just the way some people’s bodies are built. It’s not always a disorder they are hiding from everyone or drug use.

I think she’s gorgeous either way.

      • Eva says:

I feel like some people suspend all common sense when discussing things like this. As a general rule, your metabolism slows down as you age. Yes, maybe there are a few exceptions to the rule, but here we have a girl who was no where near this skinny at 17, just an average girl, not an athlete with high muscle mass, who has lost a significant amount of weight since becoming famous. She has not had some huge growth spurt either which her ‘loss of baby fat’ could be attributed to. There is undeniable pressure to be thin in Hollywood and public scrutiny on one’s appearance, and these are the most likely reasons for her weight loss (albeit possibly exacerbated by her Mom’s illness). Her genes have not just suddenly ‘decided’ to behave like that, that is not how genetics works.

To me, it is quite clear what has happened here and I don’t know why people are reluctant to see it.

      • minime says:

        @ Eva
Common sense should also give us the tools to be less extremist in our judgement. Yes, there are probabilistic rules for metabolism ageing, but there are also many exception rules. Plus, yes, this is how our genes work (talk about epigenetics), it’s not at all something stable. Stress also works both ways: make some people to earn weight and some people to loose weight. And talking about metabolic changes from childhood-puberty-adolescence-adulthood is a never ending topic.
She does look a bit too thin and I also think she looked great with some more pounds. However, to jump in the bandwagon of skinny-shaming doesn’t appeal my “common sense”. She might be lying about it, I think she is not…in the end even for the 99.9% of Hollywood girls saying that it’s all genetics and metabolism, there will be the 1% to whom actually it is true (and I think that usually you do see an abysmal difference in body type in those).

    • snowflake says:

that’s what i was going to say. i would buy that b.s. if i hadn’t seen she was bigger before. she is naturally bigger. not big but not as skinny as she is now,

    • becky says:

Yeah, I loved what Amanda S said. Very refreshing to hear.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

  5. Jules says:

At least she can express herself intelligently unlike Shay-Lean the Vag Queen.

  6. FF says:

Why people are thinking she’s emaciated? Sure, she’s thin and it would be great if she had a bit more muscle tone. But over all Emma looks OK.

  7. Cleveland Girl says:

I think what freaks people out is that her body has NO fat, and NO muscle. She is literally skin and bones, and compared to what she looked like in House Bunny or Superbad, it is just really a total transformation. That said – I thinks she looks happy ….

  8. Nya says:

That’s the same excuse people like Kate Bosworth use.

  9. Hmmm says:

Just another desperate actress signing up to work with Woody Allen.

    • KJP says:

She agreed to work with him before all the stuff with his daughter came out.

      • Hmmm says:

You mean she signed up before 1993 ???

      • Miss T says:

@ kjp Yesterday, it was announced that she signed on to do another film with him. I love her, but am a bit disapointed.

      • Jules says:

KJP, was Emma Stone born back in the 70’s? It’s been well known since the 90’s that Allen is a child molester. Shame on her and anyone else that works with that monster.

    • AG-UK says:

I don’t think she is desperate she works all the time. She isn’t really on my radar though. I feel for her with her mother and cancer very worrying.

    • Lady D says:

I liked her too, until I read about her being Woody’s new muse, and already signed up for his next movie before the current one is even out. I was actually a little surprised at all the ‘I adore her, I love her, she’s such a sweetheart’ type of comments.
Someone mentioned the other day about how some actors are beloved and others with the same actions are slammed 6 ways from Sunday. I was thinking Emma must be one of those examples.

  10. Lark says:

I love, love, love Emma but she’s been super thin since before the rumors started that her mom was ill again. Her face looks sunken in a lot, which is what startles people, and she’s bony. In the past she had rounded features and her arms weren’t bony at all (Easy A). People talk about her thinness because it simply doesn’t look natural and she looks downright ill in some photos. I’m also rather disappointed she signed on to work with Woody Allen again. She doesn’t need to work with Woody, she’s an A list actress and has a lot of great projects to pick from.

She looks beautiful, if casual, in that dress though.

  11. lucy2 says:

I can believe she’s under a lot of stress, with her family’s health issues and working on much bigger films lately, but I would be that every actress in Hollywood is told to drop a few once their career starts to take off, even though none of them need too.

  12. Penny says:

I don’t think she’s terribly thin, she just has very long, slim limbs for her frame and that tends to make people look skinnier than they actually are. Compare her to Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth and she looks like a beacon of health.

She was just 17 when she filmed Superbad, and if you re-watch she looks so young. She still had a bit of puppy fat, especially in her face, but she had the same long skinny limbs. I had a bit of a puffy puppy fat look going until I hit my 20’s, as did a lot of my friends. It’s not unusual to lose a few pounds as you finish puberty, and it seems she’s lost a few more pounds recently due to personal issues, also not unusual. People are acting like she was really curvy before, but at the very most she’s lost like 25lbs over 7 years. She was already a very slim girl before, and she’s petite so she doesn’t need to lose much weight before it shows. She only looks a touch thinner now than she did in Easy A, and if she’d had a problem for that long she’d be looking haggard by now, not fresh and glowing.

  13. Miss T says:

I don’t think she has an eating disorder or anything. But I do think she made a calculated effort to lose weight. Is it a coincidence that she started losing weight around the same time that she became a fashion darling? I think there’s a lot of pressure in hollywood/fashion circles to be super thin. And I say this as someone who has always naturally been underweight despite eating well, so I know it’s possible. I just think there may be more at play here. But again, I don’t think she’s starving herself.

  14. Melibea4ever says:

Sorry but if this was true,as I wanted it to be, cause I really like her, her weight would be up and down and she has been losing weight consistently since easy A, so I don’t buy it!

    • Nick says:

      Yes, yes, and yes.

I still like her because I think most H’wood women are pressured from every angle to look like a bobblehead but that doesnt change the fact that what she is saying is false. I just wish some bobblehead would come out and say I look this way because I want to act and if I didnt I would never get any leading parts.

  15. bammer says:

Isn’t it strange that 99.5% of actresses all have the exact same “issue” of eating whatever they want, just doing occasional yoga and just struggling to plump up into those size zero gowns? What are the odds that all these naturally thin women are in the same profession getting smaller and smaller every year??? Give me several breaks with that b.s.

  16. mia girl says:

I don’t know that I believe all she is saying, because it does sound like what we’ve heard before from many actresses. Although, I do appreciate that she says it in a much more palatable and intelligent way.

But more than anything, it is incredibly annoying that actresses in Hollywood have to keep talking about their weight, while actors (who deal with the same pressures) rarely, if ever, get asked this crap!

    • Miss T says:

      +1

At the end of the day, it’s her body and it’s really none of our business.

      • Nick says:

It sets a terrible example for younger girls and continues to perpetuate the myth that this is a normal healthy body.

      • Miss T says:

@nick, she could very well be healthy. Healthy bodies come in all different shapes and sizes. I think it’s interesting that people seem to only consider 2 possibilities either she just randomly lost weight or she is anorexic. Like I said, I’m not naive. I do think she made an effort to lose weight. I just don’t necessarily think she is starving herself. I, mean it’s not like she’s emaciated.

      • Nick says:

@ Miss T – youre right that she could be (probably is) healthy and that was a poor choice of words by me. My point was I think its disingenuous of Stone to say that she lost this weight because she is stressed. I dont doubt that she is stressed for a variety of reasons but the reason she is losing weight is because she is not eating. Plain and simple. I think its sad that young girls are going to be cursing their genetics that they dont look like Stone. Genetics has a role in our body types but it is given far too much credit.

      • Nick says:

      • Penny says:

It’s not always that simple. I lose weight when I’m stressed despite eating as usual. The problems are that I can’t sleep, so I’m active for more of the day, I go harder with cardio exercise because it helps get some of the stress out, and I’m just generally more highly strung, so always fidgeting and moving about. Without trying to I burn a few hundred extra calories a day and before I know it 10lbs has dropped off me.

    • Mark says:

Stop talking about it then, the people that talk about how skinny she is are people on websites like these.

And it is mean and trolling behaviour if someone was calling Lena Dunham overweight and telling her she needs to lose a few people would be going nuts.

  17. aenflex says:

I call bullshit. When she just hit the scene, she was a healthy, attractive, normal weight. Nice breasts, etc.

  18. Tania says:

I really hope she thrives through because I love her. And those fine lines around her mouth need to go. Also I don’t understand this woody Allen association.

  19. HoustonGrl says:

Hmmm, she may be naturally thin and lose weight under stress, but I wouldn’t say she looks healthy. Obviously it’s her business. But when I think of a more normal, natural thinness I think of someone like Rachel McAdams. Emma Stone is probably less than 100 lbs. I’m sorry, but speaking as a woman in her twenties, that is just not normal. There are legitimate health consequences that result, it’s not just “how you look.” That’s why it’s dangerous. You can get damage your fertility, lose bone density, stop getting your period and permanently damage your heart.

  20. kg says:

Random and off topic – why didn’t we see any pics of her with Taylor Swift at the MET Gala, they used to be inseparable besties.

  21. salma says:

    my favorite girl in hollywood

  22. shanaynay says:

    What are these family issues?

  23. Sisi says:

well I can only compare it to myself.

Always have been thin, but during my late teens I still had some puppy fat in my face which gave the illusion that I was a bit heavier. During my early 20’s the puppyfat disappeared. Weight did not stay on as my school and career activities got more active compared to my teens. I just got thinner and thinner. No amount of eating could get me to gain weight. The best I could aim for was not losing, but that was not possible to keep up. Doctor said I was perfectly healthy.
Now that I am 29 I finally start to get to the stage where I can gain a little weight if I focus on it and stay a set amount of pounds without effort.
Halfway during my twenties was definitely the toughtest moment weight wise.

not going to criticise her, her words sounds too familiar.

  24. D says:

Here’s the thing, I know that everyone talks about the camera adding ten pounds, but it’s entirely different to look at a picture as opposed to seeing someone in person in the flesh. I’m not at all saying that if you met her in person she’d suddenly look significantly heavier, but, as someone who has seen her in and around Manhattan on more than one occasion and even sat next to her in a coffee shop once, I’ll say this. She looks perfectly healthy, and she eats like a normal person. Seeing her actually reminded me of my mother who is entirely different than I am in terms of build and appetite. Over the years lots of friends have presumed as my mother is small that obviously she is anorexic or has issues with food when it’s really her appetite is different. She also happens to be one of those people who when going through a personal crises forgets to eat and loses weight. Body shaming someone like Emma Stone who seems to have a healthy relationship with herself and food does no one any good. To make judgements merely by looking at photo’s and thinking she’s so much thinner at 25 than she was at 19 is b.s. How many of us look different in our mid twenties than we did when in college?
That’s my two-cents, I don’t mean to start any arguments but I think that once you’ve seen her right in front of you and see that she shows no signs of unhealthiness you might change your tune.

    • Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

If the camera adds ten pounds she should look thinner in person.

  25. Olivia says:

Emma’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. I know she celebrated being 5 years cancer free just last may. Has she had a relapse?

    • Courtney says:

Rumor is that her cancer has come back and that’s she’s been visiting her mom frequently. She missed the Oscar’s to be with her mom.

  26. Hissyfit says:

I love me some Emma fashion but this dress reminds me so much of that red/pink combo dress she wore with this poofy peplum before.

  27. ECAM says:

Personally, I think it’s a mixture of typical Hollywood thinnification and stress from her mom being sick. Emma had definitely slimmed down in comparison to her early career years, but I don’t think it really got bad until about a year/two years ago? If my mom ever got seriously sick with cancer, I would completely lose it.

  28. Janet says:

I can totally relate. If you have a high metabolism combined with a naturally small appetite, keeping weight on is a full-time job.

  29. Rachel says:

I think it would be impossible to hate this girl. I adore her so much! I have been really startled by her weight loss in the past, but she seems to go up and down a bit – from being too skinny to being fairly healthy. I can see how stress and her work schedule would have something to do with it. I almost wish I could be like her and others who can’t eat when they’re stressed. When I’m stressed, I’m a non-stop eating machine. It’s really not great for someone like me who gets stressed out easily and often. Ugh.

Anyway, her sentiment about treating herself more kindly and like she’d want to treat a daughter of hers is amazing advice. It’s one of the few things I’ve ever read from a celebrity that made me go “Wow…” I think that in a society where we’re prone to attacking each other and ourselves, we could all stand to be a little kinder to ourselves. I think it would definitely translate to being kinder to others. I’m taking what she said to heart and hope that when I find myself being too hard on myself, that I reflect on what she said.

  30. I Choose Me says:

I remember when Easy A came out and she does not look that much thinner to me. Sure her face was softer and rounder but I really don’t see much more than five pounds weight difference between Easy A and now.

I buy what she’s saying is what I’m saying. But I could be biased ‘cuz I think she’s the cat’s meow.

  31. Cupcake says:

I can’t muster sympathy for her. In our thinness-obsession American culture, and in Hollywood especially, this sort of statement is a brag-plaint. With obesity on the rise these types of comments are relevant to very few. Keep it to yourself.

  32. Nene says:

I kind of believe her because as we get older our bodies change and there’s nothing we can do about it.

It’s common for people to eat during times of stress, grieving, sadness or depression.
The reverse is the case for me. As I get older I realize that during happy times- which is often- I don’t feel hungry, and when I eat am easily satisfied. Also I eat very clean.
But when am sad or under stress I eat more and not so healthily.
And the bottomline, am at my healthiest and slimmest when am happy. Strange right?
Is any one of you guys like that?

  33. SK says:

Yeah… See I just don’t believe her. Perhaps she has lost more weight lately due to emotional stress (this happened to me once); but she has been scarily thin for a few years now. She started shedding weight shortly after she shifted into adult films, and it’s a real shame. It also coincided with her rise as a fashion It Girl. She is tiny, and her joints have that look that naturally skinny people don’t get. I know because I could never put on weight when I was younger. I had no fat on me and I was tiny. However I still had some muscle tone and I always looked healthy – there’s a big difference. Also consider that we are seeing her on camera so she is actually 10 pounds / 5 kilos lighter than this… Terrifying! Whatever is going on with her; I hope things look up and that she makes a big effort to put on some weight and be healthy soon. I love this chick but every time I look at her these days I wince and feel sad.

  34. Damaris says:

I first saw her weight loss at the Golden Globes in that orange-tan Calvin Klein dress. She was and still is skinny. However, I think she looks gorgeous in the first photo.
