Kendra Wilkinson named her daughter Alijah Mary Baskett: meh or lovely?

wenn21246094

It felt like Kendra Wilkinson was pregnant for two years, right? We heard about her second pregnancy constantly. Part of that was because she started mommy-blogging for People Magazine, telling Hard Truths about pooping, hormones and why she doesn’t want to give birth to a “princess.” Anyway, Kendra did give birth to a little girl last Friday. Congrats to her and to Hank! Their newborn daughter has a big brother, Hank IV, who is four-and-a-half right now (yes, that’s true, it’s been that long). I was waiting to hear what Kendra named the girl, and now we know…

Kendra Wilkinson is thanking the heavens for her baby daughter … and it’s pretty obvious from the name they’ve given her. TMZ obtained the birth certificate … and it shows Kendra and hubby Hank Baskett named their baby … Alijah. Alijah Mary Baskett.

According to BabyNames.com … Alijah is an Americanized version of Elijah — which means The Lord is My God. Alijah was born at 8:02 A.M. last Friday in Los Angeles.

[From TMZ]

Thoughts on the name? I’m oddly ambivalent. I actually love the name Elijah for a boy, just because I think “Eli” is one of the cutest nicknames ever. But Alijah for a girl? Eh. Maybe they’ll call her Allie? Or Ally, like Ally Sheedy. I don’t know. I don’t think I love this. And I actually hoped that Kendra would name her daughter something really normal and Supreme Court-approved, like Elizabeth or Emily.

I like it. It has the sound of an entry I might find on ancestry dot com, from the 1700’s. And Alijah would have had 15 children, but 7 died, some of them as infants. She would survive the death of her first husband ( in a horrible farming hatchet accident) to go on to marry the richest farmer in the county, also a widower, who had 10 children of his own. They are buried together in the ruins of a historic church cemetery; the stones are withered thin from weather and time, and worn away where the inscriptions are no longer legible, but they are still graced by skulls and bones at the top.

    Their son is just beautiful.

  3. LadyMTL says:

Not crazy about it, and I have a feeling it’ll be one of those names that’s pronounced about 53 different ways, lol. (Ahh-lijah? Aaaay-lijah? And so on). I do like the nickname Ally, though.

    • Rockymtnprincess says:

I wouldn’t put money on it being pronounced like Elijah but more like Aaliyah/aleigha.

      They make cute kids!

      • Rachel says:

I wondered about that. I would think for a girl it would be pronounced more like Aaliyah?

  4. Sayrah says:

Dislike the name but it wasn’t mine to pick. Congrats to her on a beautiful family!

  5. Swordspoint says:

    I think it’s pretty.

    • Zigggy says:

      Me too.

    • MollyB says:

I agree. I’m normally drawn to traditional names and this is a little odd but . . . I don’t hate it. It rolls off the tongue in a pretty way without being outlandish.

  6. in_theory says:

Sometimes it seems to me like celebrities feel their children won’t succeed in life unless they have some extraordinary name. This one is certainly not the worst example, though.

  7. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

It’s my pet peeve when people take perfectly good names and mess with the spelling. Jennifer becomes Genifer, Sara becomes Sayrah. When I someone spell their child’s name this way I immediately think them ignorant and/or pretentious.

    • Isaphoebe says:

      +1

    • RobN says:

I tend to agree, but is there already a feminine form of Elijah? I can’t really think of one, and the name does seem like it would be pronounced the way it is spelled, which is my big hot button.

    • CariBean says:

That’s a little harsh, isn’t it? Some parents may like traditional names but decide to make it just a little unique. I have a friend who spelled her son’s name Eligh. LOVE it!

And she is the furthest thing from either ignorant or pretentious.

      • RobN says:

Yeah, it’s so unique that their kid gets to spend the next 90 years spelling it for people. Nice that mom and dad like it, but saddling a kid with 90 years of spelling their name kind of sucks.

I’ve got a last name that doesn’t spell the way it sounds and it got old very, very fast.

        @ robyn

+1 i have an unusual 3 letter maiden name that I had to spell constantly and endure jokes about it. drove me up the wall. now i’m married and now go by jackson, sooo much better than having to repeat and spell 3 times my last name before people would get it

    • G. says:

My name is Genevieve, which several people here have, but so many people can’t spell it and it’s really annoying to have. Any nickname I take is automatically misspelled, too.
Parents need to be more careful when they name their kids, but it’s annoying having to constantly correct people.

  8. Dawn says:

I think it is so much better than many other celeb kids’ name. Apple, North? No thanks! I find that Mary seems to be an out of fashion name right now and so I would have loved the name had they turned it around and had it Mary Aljiah. But they didn’t and yep I think it is a fine name. Isn’t their son a cutie pie? I think he is.

    • justme says:

Yeah- if they really wanted to be unique in today’s world, they would have called her Mary. Such a lovely name and hardly ever heard anymore.

      But it’s their choice.

  9. Ramona Q. says:

Alijah Mary Baskett does sound like the name of a Puritan from early American history, which means I love it. I don’t know how to pronounce it tho. Silent J or no?

  10. Mandy says:

I wonder if the j is supposed to be silent? Like, it sounds like Aliyah instead of Elijah? Maybe? I don’t know. It’s an okay name, but not my taste. I like more traditional names for baby girls.

  11. cro-girl says:

I like it. I wouldnt do it but I like how it has meaning to them.

  12. Nopity Nope says:

    Oh jeez.

We have a girl named Elliot, which is the Anglicized version of Elijah. I never thought of creating my own Americanized version.

  13. Cupcake says:

    I dislike it but whatevs!

  14. Lauren says:

Am I the only dork who watched The Girls Next Door? Mary was (is?) Hef’s secretary. She was super old and seemed to have a special, motherly relationship with Kendra who obviously needed some guidance. I think the use of Mary in her baby’s name is really cute.

  15. rlh says:

I like the name allot. It reminds me of Queen Latifah’s character Khadijah James on Living Single, a show I LOVED!

  16. Aurelia says:

Man alive Hank Junior continues to be ultra gorgeous. What a fabulous merging of the parents genes.
