Tom Cruise, silent in London for ‘Edge of Tomorrow’: sad or triumphant?

Tom Cruise

I’d like to introduce you to the new and improved Tom Cruise at the London premiere of Edge of Tomorrow. Let’s call him “Version 4.0.” This version of Tom promotes his new movie by not doing any interviews at all. Maybe he’ll do some later this week. He did politely greet journos on the red carpet, but he’s avoiding a full media blitz. This is an odd strategy. Tom usually appears on major magazine covers for his movies. He’d do GQ, Hollywood Reporter, and Empire. Paparazzi strolls were the norm. Now Tom’s doing the bare minimum and letting co-star Emily Blunt carry the interview load. Will it work? There’s a lot of money riding on this film.

Many of us still remember the Tom of the 1980s. He was a charismatic, mysterious up-and-comer turned A-list movie star. This version of Tom endured through the 1990s. Many people believe that crazy Tom didn’t appear until the 2005 tour of couch jumping. I’ll tell you when Tom started to seem a little “off” to me. He visited Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show in 1998 (here’s a video clip). His smile was too wide, his eyes too enthusiastic. The only reason no one found Tom weird during that interview is because Rosie was playing up her “crush” so much. Tom seemed balanced compared to Rosie’s act.

We all know Tom 2.0. He’s the couch jumper. The guy who stuck his finger into Matt Lauer’s face. The man who swept Katie Holmes into the lovebombing world of Scientology. Once Katie divorced him, we saw Tom 3.0. This was the Tom who couldn’t hold on to his third marriage. He was the defensive Tom who would use the tabloids to broadcast his “father of the year” status but grew angry when the media kept tabs. Just when things couldn’t get worse for Tom’s image, Vanity Fair published their mail-order bride story. Then Tom started to sue tabloids and made a fool of himself. Then — at almost the precise moment that the Edge of Tomorrow trailer debuted — Tom’s former publicist started dishing on her former client. Bad timing for Tom 3.0.

Now we have a new Tom. Silent Tom. Serious Tom. Sad Tom? I can’t decide. This version of Tom would like us to believe that the internet destroyed the movie star. He’s biding his time and hoping that Johnny Depp will implode and make us forget all about disastrous Tom Cruise. Do we care about Tom 4.0?

Emily Blunt looked fantastic last night. She’s wearing an Osman Resort dress that looks fresh and sophisticated. I like it a lot. Emily and Tom have already hopped on an airplane to France. From there, they’ll do NYC. Three premieres in 24 hours to fit the time-warp motif of the movie. This tour would be more interesting if the leading man would say something.

I love that dress. And there you’ve gone and made me feel sorry for Tom. Not enough to spend money on the film, but… He doesn’t look bad here at all, altho I’m not loving the suit.

    • mimif says:

      I love Emily Blunt. Period.
I hate that Tom Cruise is my brother’s doppelgänger. I mean, I’m starting to run out of excuses as to why I can’t attend family events…

      • Kiddo says:

You have a lot of famous faces in your midst, your BF as a Fabio-Franco mash-up!
I think Tom Cruise is probably a nice looking man, if you could see him beyond the baggage of the CoS Mission Impossible video, the couch jumping, and the wagging finger of glibness. So, your bro is probably cute, unless he’s cray cray too.
Oops, he is your brother, so, hmm. dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun..dooda doo, dooda doo, dooda doo, doo-doo.

      • mimif says:

Don’t make me post a pic, it’s like some Medusa sh-t. As for insinuating that I’m a starf-cker (joking obviously but had to clarify as some folks don’t know I’m a complete asshat), I’ll be sending you another (glib) necklace. Or perhaps a couch doily.

      • Kiddo says:

I just received an Amazon drone package of 15 already, my credit card is beginning to give off sparks. It won’t be pretty when the joint spells like burning plastic.

*Also, Did you get that it was the Mission Impossible theme song? I hope that sticks in your damned head all day, take that!

      • mimif says:

I hate you. That is all. You are misinformed. THE END.

  2. Rachel says:

I love her dress. That’s all I really have to say about any of it.

    • kri says:

Love her dress. One of the (many) problems is that Tom Cruise has made the same movie for the last ten years. And also, too much crazy!

      • theNood says:

Thank you soo much for saying this kri. I have to admit I don’t like Tom Cruise as an actor particularly so that obviously affects my view but when people say he’s a great actor I always think well he plays the same role, surely he’d have it down pat by now.

  3. Abbott says:

Maybe the voltage on the E-meter was set to high last audit?

    • gefeylich says:

Exactly. This is a carefully calculated attempt to make Cruise look sad and elicit sympathy, pushing aside that he’s one of the figureheads of an insidioudeis mind-controlling cult. Yes, let’s blame the big bad world of social media for usurping his carefully controlled pubic image of devoted husband, great father, humanitarian, etc. The problem with the world today (no matter what Co$ might preach) is that it is totally uncontrollable. Everyone knows everything now. And one glaring misstep – publicly displaying your misogyny and anti-Semitism, or crowing about your great mothering skills, or proclaiming yourself the greatest artist who ever lived, etc. – will now strip you of respect and credibility almost instantaneously.

It’s the new world, and it’s here to stay.

  4. Hautie says:

If Cruise wanted a little positive PR… it is time to be photograph with Suri. Looking like a normal Dad, out on a park date with the daughter. Just enjoying the day in the sun.

Instead he has been holed up in London for… a year+? He has spent very little time in the US since the “Great Escape of Katie”. Plus until he cuts ties with the Cult. He will never be able to over come the public perception of him being a Cult weirdo.

And if that was to happen… he could sell a whole new improve Tom Cruise. Movie Star!

And the public would eat it up.

    • doofus says:

agree completely on ditching $cientology. if he did that, he’d regain SO MANY lost fans, including myself.

just like with Leah Remini, I started being a fan again.

re: Suri…I wonder when he’ll face the “absentee father” headlines again. haven’t seen them photographed together in a long time, and you KNOW Cray-cray Cruise would make SURE some pics got out…

      • texgirl says:

well…i dont care he is a member of any cult or worse father or crazy lover….as long as making solid screen persona…i am in for his movies…and i really did’nt find any movie star draw attention for non franchise movies than cruise in globe…probably he is the biggest superstar after john wayne…

    • Sarajie says:

What I will never understand is why people are going on like TOM had Katie caged up. She was never part of his Scientology, so I never understood why she surprised divorced him like that. All religions are cults, so I’d rather judge Tom Cruise by the person he is. He seems to be an alright Bloke to me.

As for spending time with Suri, how do we know when they spend time together? And if he were all over with her, Tom would be accused of using his child for public sympathy. You just can’t win.

  5. aims says:

That dress is perfection. She killed it!

    • T.C. says:

Love her dress and matching shoes. She’s a matchy matchy person just like me.

As for Tom, silence is best.

  6. Hannah says:

Tom and Emily will appear on the Graham Norton Show (the UK’s most popular chat show) on Friday. So he is talking. I assume his media appearances are limited to quite “cozy” interviewers that “won’t go there”.

    • Sixer says:

He was also interviewed with Blunt on the BBC breakfast news show yesterday.

    • FingerBinger says:

Tom and Emily were also on Access Hollywood.

    • Miss T says:

Yeah, he’s done some interviews, but notice that all of his interviews are with Emily. Meanwhile Emily has done several solo interviews in addition to the ones with Tom. It’s almost as if he’s clinging to Emily for protection.

      • Cel says:

He did an interview on his own this morning on Good Morning Britain live from the red carpet. Seemed slightly downbeat and looked very tired.

  7. JH says:

Well, I’ll give him another chance if he kicks Scientology to the curb. That is the only Tom I’ll accept. Tom 5.0

  8. Dany says:

    beautiful dress. Emily looks stunning!

I don´t watch Tom Cruise movies… so sorry because Emily is a good actress

  9. Sarah says:

Glad that the puffiness has disappeared. I do think the movie looks interesting, but I predict it is going to get murdered by X-Men and Maleficient.

    • Dani2 says:

I agree that this movie has a lot of competition this week, I think a commenter said something on another thread about Tom “shaking in his platform shoes” (lol) I can see it being #3.

  10. Mia4S says:

This publicity stunt seems…dumb. I mean…I get it…but you are going to get one day of coverage instead of three more than a week before the premiere at a time when Jolie is pushing Maleficent and people are still talking about how great XMen is.

Oh what do I care, I wasn’t going to see it anyway. 🙂

  11. ML says:

He really is an incredible dramatic actor, IMO he hasn’t done his greatest work yet, he’s wasted in these action films, like a lot of great dramatic actors are these days. I hope this film does well for him though.

  12. Eleonor says:

Or maybe there’s another “containthecrazybitch” point on the contract.

  13. Tanguerita says:

I wonder if Clooney is about to make the same mistake. Till the moment Cruise married Katie and let the public be a “part of his private life” (to a much greater extent than ever before) he managed to maintain the carefully krafted image of the movie star par excellence. Then came the jumping, the maniac smiling etc. And now Clooney is letting us know about every fart he and AA make and it makes him look stupid and vulnerable. I don’t watch Tom Cruise’s movies anymore and I feel that I won’t be watching any Clooney’s movies in the future.

    • Kim1 says:

Clooney has never publicly mentioned Amal or his engagement. His publicist has never even confirmed he is engaged.IMO Clooney will never behave like Cruise did .

      • Tanguerita says:

But he already does. Staged pictures, leaked information about “Downton Abbey” and the ring, people around him talking non-stop about him and the woman “on his level”. He might have skipped the couch-jumping, but not the rest. It’s too much information and it’s coming from his camp. And it makes him look stupid and needy for public approval – not a good look for a movie star.

  14. TuesdaysChild says:

LOVED him in Minority Report and Collateral. Tom Cruise IS a movie star, but he’s allowed his weird offscreen life to interfere with people’s enjoyment of his film persona. I think people want to like Tom Cruise again but damn if he’s not making it difficult.

  15. ickythump says:

In the BEEB interview he couldnt get a word in edgeways cos EB kept talking over him -I thought she acted like a gangly schoolgirl trying sooo hard to be cool and funny – was irritating instead but I am an old fart so whadda I know? Yea, TC (or Tiny Cretan as I like to call him – Cockney rhyming slang for Thetan of course) …would regain a massive fan base if he ditched the cult, its a no brainer…literally. LOL

  16. chaine says:

I know this is not the topic at all, but checking out the clip I was struck by how lovely Rosie O’Donnell looked back then.

  17. lunchcoma says:

I’m not buying that the internet destroyed the movie star. We still have George Clooney. We still have Brad Pitt. We had Johnny Depp for a long time, and I don’t think the internet is to blame for his decline. If Johnny had been making better movies, I think he’d still be solidly in that category. I think Tom suffered as much from the fact that the public slowly woke up to the fact that he was a major participant and leader in a cult as from his foolish YouTube video. That’s something that’s a lot harder for time to erase than a foolish public appearance or a badly advised marriage.

And, no, we don’t have much in the way of new movie stars. I don’t think there’s as much demand for them anymore, with or without the internet.

    • allheavens says:

Yes, the worst thing he ever did was fire his long-time publicist and bring his sister on board. Pat Kingsley kept that crazy on the DL. I think their parting of the ways was about she wanting to keep CO$ as background noise and he wanting to bring it to the fore.

I think his ego finally got the best if him and he thought that folks were going to accept CO$ as being on par with other religions. A HUGH miscalculation.

  18. AnotherHannah says:

Just wanted to say, I’ve been following this site for 2+ years (which is technically stalking but hey) and you ladies make my morning with your comments. Truly hilarious, THANK YOU.
Ps., I get to read it at the special time in the morning when my mate and our 2 kids are asleep, and It. Is. Bliss.

  19. Karen says:

I agree with everyone that his affiliation with the cult overshadows just about everything he does. It’s really a shame because the guy is a great actor (Magnolia is my personal favorite).

  20. Intro Outro says:

Holy sh*t, I’ve always got some repulsive vibes from Cruise and could never bring myself to respect him for his talents because of his ties with Co$, but I never knew or cared to research his whole story… Thanks for the links to older posts, Bedhead, now my gut feeling and superficial knowledge are fully corroborated. =/

    What a messed-up man 🙁

  21. ickythump says:

Yes – hope we wont b seeing any “Clooney the Looney” headlines anytime soon….hope he doesnt have any weird shit we dont know about in his life cos if hes spending a lot of time in the UK and the Sun and the other rags get a hold of it he will be toast!! Lol

  22. Illyra says:

It’s actually pretty heartbreaking to go back and look at very early interview clips of Tom Cruise, before the Scientologists went after him. Physically, he’s striking, but at the same time it’s obvious that he’s vulnerable. He comes across as very sweet and even shy here in 1984:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0uy8oiRSI8

Several years ago there was an excellent documentary made about Cruise being subsumed by Scientology, called “One Day, One Destiny”:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OspkMW6jEOg

One extra bit of weirdness in the whole thing is that it’s obvious (to me) that Suri isn’t Cruise’s biological daughter. She does sort of resemble him, but she’s an absolute dead ringer for “the church’s” Tommy Davis.

  23. St says:

Lifeless Tom. That is the best description.

Sad, destroyed, lifeless person. I miss those times when we would laugh at him and call him crazy. Now he looks like a sad and beat down person and I can’t even laugh at him. There is no sparkle him him anymore. Hey – maybe he takes some medication?

You know what? I think that we don’t even know how hard it heat him when Katie dumped his controlling ass. I think he was broken down really hard.

  24. Ice says:

All the focus-group sessions and test screenings told them that TC had to stay out of the way. I’ve seen posters where it’s only Emily Blunt.

  25. zut alors! says:

I don’t care for Tom and I have never gone to the cinema to see a Tom Cruise movie™, but I have a feeling this movie will do better than predicated. I hear it’s got great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
I think he should go away and come back in a role other than his formulaic action man saves the world. Something dramatic where he gets to be vulnerable.

  26. Amy says:

Do we know when is the last time he saw Suri? She’ll be on summer break soon and will have plenty of time to see her dad. Is Suri now a suppressive person because she is with Katie? I really think he’ll end up having minimal contact with her because Katie managed to get her out of the clutches of Scientology. I wonder if he will realize what he put Nicole Kidman through by cutting her off from her kids? Probably not.

  27. mytbean says:

I wonder if this was part of the movie contract – for him to make appearances but to shut up. That would be smart if that were the case.

  28. caz says:

Emily is styled beautifully. Doesn’t Tom have blue eyes?

  29. Zooyork says:

Is it just me or does Tom’s Facebook really different?
Like (eek) he is almost resembling dean McDermott here to me…

  30. Francis says:

I think Tom is so good looking. I love his films.
    Emily. Blunt is gorgeous.
