I am so excited and Happy for her! What a way to rectify an oversight! Awesome awesome

  2. Abby_J says:

Ahhhh that moment when you see a man dressed like a woman and realize that they are more beautiful than you. Yeah, that is me now.

Seriously. If that hair is real, I will cry.

    Good for her!

    • eowyn says:

      She IS a woman now.

      • Abby_J says:

Valid point. I should have worded it differently.

      • deehunny says:

Well, we refer to her as a woman because that’s how she prefers to be referred to as. However, regardless of any amount of surgery, she will never biologically be a woman. I can’t tell you how many arguments I’ve gotten into about calling transgendered ppl “her” or “she” instead of “it” or “him.” I honestly feel like ppl go out of their way to insult or be mean to transgendered ppl. They really are the last bastion of socially acceptable discrimination

      • bkil says:

They are not the last bastion of socially acceptable discrimination. The most socially acceptable type of discrimination is against plus sized, overweight and obese people. Fat jokes are totally acceptable. Fat shaming is totally acceptable, or at least it does not come under as much fire as overt gender/transgender discrimination does. It’s unfortunate. It is all unfortunate. Human beings are such evil, evil creatures – and this is coming from someone who in this society, has many, many strikes against her ( I won’t name what they are). When you are marginalized in any way, when you are different in any way, when your aesthetic is as far away from the norm as mine is (the norm being – thin, blonde hair, blue eyes), you see human beings for what they really are – pure evil. My dream is to exist alone on an island with cats and dogs. Humans – I can take them or leave them, but mostly leave them.

      • msw says:

it’s not the oppression Olympics. Both groups are a long way away from equality. We don’t need to compare them.

      • Tiffany :) says:

bkil, I am feel for you and what you have experienced. If you stick around long enough on CB, you might find yourself thinking differently because there are a lot of special souls that comment on this site!

Don’t lose hope! Wonderful people ARE out there, sometimes we just meet them at different points on our journey.

        Hugs.

      • hmmm says:

        @bkil,

I think you’re right. People like this transgender are few and far between. And doesn’t she look gorgeous to boot? While the number of overweight people is legendary, and dlscrimination against them, contempt and bad feelings, are the norm, no matter their beauty.

I’m not thrilled by the radical on a cover; it’s just pleasing to know that someone different made it. But where is the everyday overweight person who is afforded half the respect that she is? An acceptance of differentness does not seem to extend to the overweight.

      • Nighty says:

I don’t know where you are from, but this year, in Eurovision a gay man wearing a beard and dressed as a woman won the competition… Conchita Wurst / Tom Newirth, even after some countries (Bielorussia/ Russia) tried to prevent his participating in the show…
Let’s hope the world starts accepting everyone who’s different from what is considered the “norm”..

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conchita_Wurst

      • G. says:

@DeeHoney No, she IS a woman. You don’t say she’s a woman by preference. She’s a woman. Period. Educate yourself, your transphobia is showing.

      • bkil says:

        Thanks all. 🙂

    • lily says:

You guys i think she is and always has been a woman. She just plays a transgender on a show!

      • NorthernGirl_20 says:

        Apparently she was born male.

      • msw says:

doesn’t she have an identical twin brother?that pretty much rules out possibility she was born with a female body.

      • Ray says:

She was definitely born male but has transitioned into a beautiful woman both inside and out 🙂
Also her twin brother plays pre transitioned Sophia on OITNB!

      • Trillion says:

Her brother did play her on the show. His name is Reginald Lamar and he’s a dramatic singer/performance artist (along the lines of Diamanda Galas) who focuses on issues of discrimination. He is very far outside the mainstream and is a unique person. He cross dresses but identifies as a man. His style is certainly not for everyone, but I admire his tenacity and his passion. (I’ve known him since he was a very punk/iconoclastic kid in the SF music scene w/ his band Mutilated Mannequins).

That Tina Fey Jason Bateman trailer is hilarious, id watch it

    • Erinn says:

I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but they had me at Fey and Bateman. I’ll be allll over that shit.

    • HappyMom says:

The book is great! Can’t wait for the movie.

    • mia girl says:

HappyMom- I read and loved the book and am so excited for the movie. While the trailer does look good, I’m having a little disconnect with the tone of it.

This trailer is more “zany” than I expected. Maybe it’s just the marketing and the movie captures the tone of the book.
      What do you think?

Regardless, my real complaint is that there is virtually no Timothy Olyphant in this trailer! WTF movie trailer people? Get with the program folks!!

PS. CB, Kaiser and Bedhead – this would be a great selection for book club!

      • HappyMom says:

Mia girl-yes it seems more “fun” than dysfunctional-the book was definitely darker, with comedic overtones. But it’s such a great cast-I love Tina Fey and Jason Bateman. Usually I hate movies from books I liked-but I think I’ll be more forgiving because of the actors.

      • mia girl says:

Looks like we have the same feeling about the trailer, the book and the cast!

  4. don't kill me i'm french says:

She’s beautiful!!! I hate her! I’m dead of jealousy

  5. MsMirna says:

Some people are pitching a fit about this. I think she looks great, except for the lace front wig. I HATE lace fronts (especially straight and blonde ones) on black women.

  6. delorb says:

Gorgeous. I so hate her right now. LOL

    • jaye says:

Those LIPS though! People pay good money to get full, luscious lips like that! LOL

  7. Kiddo says:

The funniest thing is that the blog (at link) thought the NYT was a ‘perfect paper’ in the first place.

Speaking of Tina Fey, she and Amy killed on the Don Rickles thing last night. Also surprisingly super-funny were Scorsese with De Niro, and Rickles himself, who is as old as dirt. Johnny Depp speaks like he is on some uber-Valium, he’s so low key and monotone, he’s practically under the key.

    • Birdix says:

Agreed–nyt has typos all the time! Sometimes they even add typos to writers’ work. Bound to happen with deadlines.

  8. Ashley Greene looks the same to me….toned as usual.

  9. LilyT says:

    CONGRATS Laverne you look gorgeous.

And, bravo Time magazine, better late than never.

  10. msw says:

I love her and I’m so glad she’s bringing trans issues into the spotlight. I’ve heard her character is going to be featured more heavily on the new season of Orange. I can’t wait.

so few shows feature trans individuals. It’s nice to see the show pay attention to a trans person as a whole and not just in an objectified way.

  11. Sunlily says:

Love her! Glad TIME finally gave her the cover after that bullshit they pulled last month.

  12. word says:

I feel bad for Selena Gomez. She’s so young. I wonder if anyone else in her family has it?

    • Killie says:

I know! It’s terrible! I don’t think Lady Gaga has lupus though.

    • Stephanie says:

I really feel for Selena. I was diagnosed with lupus two years ago after having flares off and on since I was 13. There are medications but they are not foolproof. It’s not like if you get a bacterial infection and take antibiotics for 10 days, then you’re better. You can have great lab values, be on your medications, and still feel like death. It sucks.

I’m sending her lots of thoughts and prayers and I hope you guys, my fellow Celebitches, will join me. It’s a cruel disease, period.

Btw May is lupus awareness month.

  13. Pumpkin Pie says:

    It was TIME!

  14. Hillshmill says:

She’s amazing. I love her character on OITNB. And I’m very surprised by the statistic on the cover that states that an extimated 1.5 million Americans identify as transsexual. I had no idea the trans community was so large. I’m glad there are people like Laverne who are bringing trans issues mainstream. She has all of my respect and I hope to learn a lot from her.

  15. starrywonder says:

I am glad she was on the cover.

Anna Gunn’s ex husband is a POS.

The Tina Fey trailer looks awesome! I can’t wait to watch that.

  16. lucy2 says:

I finally got around to watching Orange, and I loved it. Laverne’s character had a scene where she looked into the bathroom mirror, no makeup, and I was struck by how beautiful she is. That character’s story is really touching too. The whole show is just great. Nicely done, TIME.

    It’s never lupus!

  17. Tiffany :) says:

I am not super familiar with her, but from what I have read she seems to not only be gorgeous, but VERY intelligent and well spoken. Not only will her community benefit from her getting attention, but I think she will bring a lot of insight to society as a whole. The more we understand each other, the more harmony there is.

Also…I’d love to have a post to discuss #YesAllWomen. I keep being moved by what I am reading and I would love to chat about such matters with the Celebitchy community!

    • Trillion says:

YOu know who’s rocking my world at #yesallwomen? Neil Gaiman!! God, I love that man.

  18. Patty Cake says:

I am happy for her. I’m happy for anyone who takes a rightful stand for who they are and leads the pack because without people like Ellen and Lavern, who say this is who I am and it’s only right that I be treated as everyone else, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we have today, regardless of whichever our respective countries we live are at. You look lovely Lavern.

  19. Nance says:

No idea who she is, maybe because I’m french canadian.

    • mata says:

You’re not alone. I have no idea who she is, either. Last time they wrote about her, I looked her up, but I had forgotten since then. I guess she’s an actress on the show, “Orange is the New Black.”

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, that’s all I know about her, that’s why I haven’t commented directed on the topic. I know nothing about her and don’t get the show, so I’ve never watched.

  20. ted says:

    I can’t stop laughing at the pictures—smh

  21. Liz says:

I don’t think she’s more beautiful but she looks “done” or altered in some way.

  22. Dizzybenny says:

Kinda looks like Michelle Obama, but more put together or more Photoshop, take your pick.
    Interesting!
