Kourtney Kardashian was too fancy to tip her waitress at a Hamptons restaurant

120198PCN_Kourtney14

Last week we learned that Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick are expecting their third kid. Us Weekly’s sources claimed that the pregnancy was planned, but on the trailer for the new season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it seems like Kourtney is telling her family that this pregnancy was not planned. Scott did seem genuinely surprised, I guess. But hasn’t she always told him that she wants more babies?

Anyway, Kourtney and Scott have been camped out in the Hamptons for the past few weeks. I’m pretty sure Khloe is there too, or she’s back and forth between the Hamptons and the city. The photos of Kourtney in the blue plaid are from Monday night – she and Scott and a friend named Joyce went out to eat in Sag Harbor. Kourtney ID’s her look: “I am wearing: a Rails shirt from DASH, Frame denim jeans, Chanel espadrilles and a Proenza Schouler backpack.”

There’s been a lot of controversy about the Kardashians coming to the Hamptons. The Hamptons are an interesting blend of old-money and nouveau riche, and I’m pretty sure that both groups are very snobby about reality stars and such. Various Hamptons political figures have complained about the zoning laws for KUWTK and how E! has invaded all of these little enclaves. So it’s no surprise that people are leaking damaging stuff to Page Six now:

The Kardashians are continuing to infuriate Hamptonites.

Kourtney — who already has a rent-free space for her Dash store plus a mansion paid for by E! — angered staff at The Driver’s Seat in Southampton Friday after failing to leave a tip on her free lunch.

“Local servers are hard-working people who support their families and live on tips,” sniffed a witness.

Later, Kardashian was spotted having dinner at Southampton Social Club, where “other diners around them were asked to sign releases, which did not go over well.”

Kardashian’s rep insists poor Kourtney was never expected to pay. “The meal was comped and production left a generous tip. As for the dinner . . . no one had a problem signing the release forms.”

[From Page Six]

It might be true that “production left a generous tip” – although I doubt it – but why wouldn’t Kourtney leave her own tip? And why was her meal comped, for the love of God? Did E! producers work out some kind of deal where certain establishments will get “free publicity” in exchange for allowing KUWTK to film there? Probably. But that’s still no excuse to NOT tip. Whenever I go to one of my favorite restaurants and I get one of my favorite waiters or waitresses, they might give me a discount too – but I always make up that discount in the tip. You tip according to the amount that you should have been charged, not by what you were (or in this case, were not) charged.

    Classy.

When is someone going to speak up and admit this family’s last name is synonymous with a man who killed his ex wife and got away with it??????? Their father hid evidence that could have put a guilty man in jail and they know it!!!! No wonder they’re so dirty and secretive!!! They care more about fitting in, being rich and accepted than doing the right thing. This is depressing…

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

A very relevant point given the fact that today marks the 20th anniversary of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

      • Cheryl says:

        I,too, have wondered this.

      • TG says:

What makes me think this might be true is not that the Goldman family said Robert Kardashian snuck out with a suitcase but he signed on as Simpson’s lawyer in order to avoid being questioned and called as a witness. He got the attorney-client protection so that combined with their accusations that he smuggled out stuff is strong evidence IMO. I actually don’t know much about this case so would be interested if others have more specific info on this accusation and what led Robert to actually becoming on of O.J.’s lawyers. That would also explain Robert’s total disbelief on his face with Simpson was acquitted.

However, regarding this story, I hate to defend the Kartrashian’s but I think Radar is making up a lot of stuff. Everyday they come out with bad stories from the Hamptons and no one else is reporting this. So one person could be complaining and Radar makes it like it is the entire village. I mean I don’t know and it all might be true, but I am not necessarily believing every story Radar puts out there.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I was reading a recap of the infamous car chase, and didn’t know that Robert Kardashian had read a statement from OJ while the chase was going on, and it was COMPLETELY worded like a suicide note.

Very interesting poitns, TG, about the smuggling of evidence, etc.

I was in school when the verdict was read, but I was home sick that day. I remember being by myself on the couch with a blanket…and my faith in the US justice system just shattered. It was bound to happen at some point, but that was a really big “loss of innocence” moment for me. I was very idealistic about the justice system before that.

      • marmaduke45 says:

Thank you!! I love how this factoid always seems to get conveniently glossed over, or just goes completely unmentioned altogether. Everything about that family is unsavory….the perfect exemplification of people who are grossly lacking in morals totally not giving two tiny shits, because hey…they’re loaded. I think they’re vile.

      • fairyvexed says:

Simpson was just another wife beater who got away with it. Race is bullshit. Men beat women and people think of excuses. That’s all. Of course it’s really hard to claim you’re a victim when you turn around and victimize women.

      • MCraw says:

The court system has always been broken. The fact that it took Nicole Simpsons murder to “shatter faith in the justice system” for some is kind of weird. We see it everyday before and after. Justice in this country is a joke.

That said… Talent is never expected to pay for lunch. Productions essentially hire restaurants for catering cast and crew, the restaurants win because they have a bill for about 50 ppl (more or less on a reality show, 150-300 on a movie) for several hours, so it’s above the standard menu rate they’re charging. Tipping is always welcome, but, normally, the talent sometimes don’t even have their wallets or cash on them because of whatever wardrobe changes happening behind the scenes. I really can’t be mad at her about this.

    • kri says:

I would say “bad form” but then no one would be able to narrow down that comment to the correct Kardashian. They are all just so gross. I wish no one would allow them anywhere to film that creepshow of theirs.

    • Samoonta says:

Isn’t it ironic that all this negative & attention getting publicity is coming out right before the airing of Klob and Klarp Take the Hamptons? I’m not saying Klarp got pregnant for show PR, and I’m not saying they’re not likely awful folks most of the time. But their team certainly knows what to do with any type of photo opp or family news. I am terrified to even think of their PR machine. Planting stories no matter how negative, and then this site picks up all the tripe. I feel like I am waiting around for the Kardashians to die off like the skinny jean fad. It just doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon after nearly a decade.

  2. Daz London says:

    We already know they’re cheap.
    This just confirms it.

    • Sabrine says:

Kourtney doesn’t really have a pleasant personality. She’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer either. In the privileged world she lives in, she didn’t give those servers a second thought as to how they struggle to feed their families and how tips are so important. I think Khloe and Kim are a lot nicer than she is. But I wouldn’t blame any of the Kardashian daughters for the sins of their father. They were small children at the time and had nothing to do with his shady dealings.

  3. paola says:

I hate stories about stingy celebrities. I’ve been a waitress for quite some time and nothing disgust me more than demanding customers leaving without tipping.
I was working in San Francisco once and this woman wanted some specific soup that we didn’t have on the menu so I had to go get it from another restaurant and then serve it to her. She just had a spoonful before telling me it tasted horrible.
She left without leaving a tip.
By the way, the woman was Naomi Campbell.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Bitch! I can’t believe she did that to you! That is inexcusable. I hate when celebrities behave with such ingratitude and entitlement, ugh ugh ugh.

      • FLORC says:

        GoodNames
Because I like you from the Royal chats i’ll wwrite to you:)
Lots of stories have been out for ages that early Kardashians and more recently Kimye related dinners and services are excellent tippers. Of course when they’ve done this people lashed out claiming they just want good pr or it was only done for purposes on the show. At this point I can’t see how they could tip anyone and have it be known and not hated.

I just dislike it when people get such minor facts wrong…
I do agree at this point there’s a runaway train full of entitlement issues with that family now.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, sorry FLORC, I was referring to Naomi Campbell. I didn’t make that clear. About the soup story.

In this case, if her staff tipped the waitress I don’t really think there was a problem.

I like you, too. Actually, you made me stop and think about my Kim K remarks. I really don’t care for her, but I was saying really mean things about her and taking pleasure in reading really mean things about her. You made me realize that I really didn’t want to be that person, so I have tried to be more objective about her, and now I really don’t comment on her very much. It’s fine to be snarky, but celebrities are human, after all, as you have pointed out.

      • FLORC says:

Oh no, Naomi is terrible. If she smiled at me i’d live in fear for what horror was to come my way. Completely understand!

And I appreciate you not being one of those that thinks mean things for the sake of mean thoughts. Not just here, but on all the forums.
With that said, i’m not a Kim apologist even though I am here it seems. Her style is terrible. Who is advising this girl exposed mid drifts are her friend! and that the world knows about photoshop and it’s not her secret weapon for image control.

She puts herself out there. That’s her call and risk. I turned on these forums when people started attacking Nori and she’ll grow up to hate her parents basically because the commentors do. Anyways, i’ll criticize, but not for any reason.

Side Point.. Nothing PMK does it good or selfless. I think all her children are the product of a more insideous kind of child abuse.

    • Lisa says:

That sounds about right. Entitled asshole.

    • Breebree says:

      No! But also, not shocking!

    • feebee says:

That’s just ridiculous. Not you, but the request and then whoever told you to go to another restaurant to get the soup. There has to be a line and the line would be that. Ugh Naomi Campbell.

Another thing, slightly off – but what if something had happened to you while you were off the premises? I take it you didn’t normally leave the restaurant to do your job. Servers need “danger money” for handling customers like this.

      • paola says:

I was just told to go so I grabbed my jacket and made my way to the other restaurant. It wasn’t far so I walked up Columbus Avenue and got the damn soup.
What her entourage said was that ‘Naomi loved the food in the other restaurant but here she likes the atmosphere better!’
I was histerically laughing all my way up to the other restaurant and the way down.
        Hilarious.

      • TG says:

LOL on the “danger money”. I have worked at law firms (not my current one, which is awesome) where they give out “combat pay” to assistants who work with abusive attorneys. The pay is nice if you are made of Teflon and a robot but if you are like me and crumble easily all you will get for it is a near nervous breakdown, depression, anxiety, lots of crying in the bathroom and low self-esteem. Five years later and I have never quite recovered from the experience.

      • Erinn says:

        TG – I couldn’t do it.
I’ll get an angry email from a client, and be so worked up haha. And I only work in the website design/development world. I used to have a thicker skin, but now I crumble.

      • bluhare says:

LeBron James stiffed my favorite waiter at a place I used to eat. It was at a hotel and he didn’t pay his check, so the hotel put it on his room bill with no tip. I guess he was OK to deal with, just cheap.

    • Frida_K says:

Some people don’t need soup. They need therapy.

SO sorry you had to endure that incident!

      Signed,

      Frida_K
      Cocktail waitress during undergraduate years

      • paola says:

Exactly. That’s why I am a proud non famous person. I am normal and I can eat soup wherever I am. And if there is no soup on the menu I don’t even mind!

      • Decloo says:

        NO SOUP FOR HER!

    • lucy2 says:

That’s awful! I really don’t understand some people – they must be so miserable themselves, to make life so hard for everyone around them.

    • FLORC says:

But this may not be a stingy celebrity. Just a story twisted to stir up a controversy.

This is common practice. Production companies stike deals to film. For Kourtney to walk into a restaurant knowing a deal like that is in place without her wallet is normal. Again, this is just an outlet for people to direct their excess and largey needless hate.

      • Jayna says:

I agree with you. The show is fake, scripted. So it was much like an actor walking in to do a scene. She knew everything was taken care of, and the restaurant was getting free promo and had struck a deal with production.

I can’t stand the Kardashians, but this story is a non-story. The waitress was tipped.

      • Tiffany :) says:

FLORC and Jayna, I agree. This was a production expense, Kourtney wouldn’t have been involved with the payment.

      • FLORC says:

I’m a bit in shock. I’m not being chewed out here…
Thank you ladies for 1. not doing that. And 2. nice responses:)

      • floridaseaturtle says:

Agree, that producers could have tipped, however, she could still leave her own on the table to make it personal. She has pockets to carry bills in. How much would it cost her for a scrap of integrity? Loser.

      • Kate says:

        Agree.

If it helps just think of it as E! being the person with the corporate credit card on a work lunch. They leave a tip that covers everyone, so there’s no need for each individual person to get their wallets out.

In this instance the waitress got her tip, it just didn’t come directly from the person she served. I’m not really sure what her problem is, did she expect to be tipped twice? Perhaps since the tip was likely paid direct to management she never got it, but in that case her issue is with her boss.

    • Macey says:

I hope you added a little something extra to that soup…like a sneezer or something.

I waited tables yrs ago when I was first out of high school and it is by far one of the hardest and worst jobs Ive ever had. You really see how disgusting people are when you have to serve them. I always said everyone should have to wait tables for a week before they are permitted to go out to eat just so they know what the servers go thru. You can tell A LOT about a person by how they treat their service workers.

      • paola says:

I could easily write a book. I served many celebrities too.. and some of them are really nice people. Thank god after my graduation I stopped serving tables. It was horrible. I hated every minute of it but it was the only job i could do at the time.

      • minime says:

I so much agree. I think everyone should experience once in their lifetime what is to work as waiting staff. It is incredible how rude and obnoxious people can be. I used to work behind the counter during summer holidays and it never ceased to surprise me how unpleasant people could be (and even worse for my friends serving at the tables). It is now a pet peeve of mine when people accompanying me are unpleasant or unthankful towards waiting staff (without a reason). I can’t! On the other hand, I always feel like extra tipping when the waiter does everything with a smile. It is sometimes an incredible effort to make the client feel good. I prefer a million times an average place with super nice staff than an awesome place with closed face ones.

      • Hello says:

Paola, you enticed me now, please tell us which were the good celebrities and the bad ones?

      • Kate2 says:

        @paola –

OMG, please spill stories. Who was nice, who was horrible and please give examples of each… 😉

FTR – I never waited tables but I am always super extra nice to the staff because a) I don’t want spit or worse in my food (I saw Waiting) and b) because I did have a mother and sister who waited tables and between them and my own imagination I imagine how difficult a job that is.

I also never send anything back unless its absolutely far from what I wanted. I have a few dietary restrictions so unless it is something I can’t eat I will suck it up and eat it.

      • paola says:

        ok ok 🙂

So.. I’ve been working in a very posh restaurant in Florence during the university years and Eva Longoria was there for her honeymoon with Tony Parker.
They were so nice and they acted just like a normal couple in love.
Also Maura Tierney (which i didn’t who she was until one of my colleagues pointed out she was in the ER maincast) was lovely. She was charming and with a guy younger than her (he was soooo hot) she was so so nice.
Bob Geldof was an asshole. Uptight and snotty, but maybe he was just tired after the event he had attended.
Then Yungin Kim (Sun from LOST) she was amazing, i was a big fan so she was up for every picture and she was supernice.
Brad Pitt as well was very nice, he was alone, just what it looked like a normal guy and he was very very nice with all the fans. (it was before he got married to J aniston).
Carlos Santana in San Francisco, he surely is cookie but also very nice.
Peter Weller (Robocop) lives in Florence and everytime he sees me he stops for a chat and a hug ( He speaks italian too)
The biggest asshole was Madonna. She picks something from the menu and changes it completely. she doesn’t eat this. she doesn’t like that. this is too hot. this is too cold. and when she finds something she likes she just has a bite and then leaves the rest,
I was a big fan of hers but not anymore. she is just a pain in the ass.
Lenny Kravitz. I don’t know what he was like. I kept blushing and staring at him. I don’t remember anything. I just know he was so very hot.

      • littlestar says:

Omg paola, why have you been keeping all that juicy gossip from us?! Love it and thank you for sharing! I have to say that I am surprised Eva Longoria was nice, maybe it was because she was with Tony Parker? My friends once saw her in Vegas and they said she was a real twit.

I was never an actual server server, but I worked for a family member’s catering company all throughout high school and university. I hated it. But it was a real eye opener, how people will treat you like crap just because you are the one serving them their food and cleaning their dirty dishes off of their table. The one thing I always do now when we go out to dine is pile up the dishes after we are finished eating, to make it easier for the server to take away. It annoys my husband, but I know what it’s like!

      • paola says:

ahaha Littlestar! I have more! I just didn’t want to ‘show off’.. I hate when people play the ‘name dropping’ card.
I met Jessica Alba, she was very sweet and her stylist was with her and he was laughing so hard and making so many jokes that they were too funny to watch. He wears the most amazing glasses I’ve ever seen, he sometimes is in Florence and when I meet him he is always very nice.
Daniel Day Lewis used to work in incognito for a shoe maker (many years ago) in Florence and he was friends with my boss so i saw him many times. Very very polite and charming. Never out of line and always wanting to know the name of the person serving him.
Sting tried a few times to speak italian, whcih was dreadful but he has such a good temper.
My bf always makes fun of me reminding me of that time I confused Bob Geldof for Mark Knopfler. I wanted to die. I called him Mr. Knopfler and he reacted looking at me in that funny way as if saying ‘wtf are you talking about’ and his agent looked at me as if I had just confessed to have an artificial art. My bf was there and He saw me blushing and he started laughing so much that he got sideeyed by mr Geldof himself. I wanted to die.

      • bluhare says:

        Great stories, paola! Thank you.

    • LeahMommy says:

Gosh that is horrible story. Making you go to another restaurant to get food for someone is mind boggling and shouldn’t have been done. But I gotta say I’m not surprise that Naomi Campbell would do such a nasty thing.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Ugh, I have no love for Naomi at all. She seems just vile.

Great stories, Paola! I love hearing when people are nice! 😀

  4. Lindy79 says:

I don’t know if I’d like to eat somewhere that would comp a meal for anyone associated with this grubby family, even for free publicity.

    • Dawn says:

Exactly my thought. I have zero respect for people who associate with these grifters. They just leave a taint on anything that they touch and the fact that they are such good friends with Joe Francis proves that over and over again. I get so sick of the Kardashians always blaming everyone else for their bad behavior. And if the show is this scripted then they need to stop calling it a reality show. End of rant!

    • eva k says:

Exactly! Residents should boycott any place the K-Klan leaves their stink on.

  5. SamiHami says:

I’m not a Kardashian fan or defender, but it says that the meal was comped and that the production people left a generous tip. If that’s so, what’s the problem?

    • Catk says:

Yeah, if they’re filming, they might be used to this. If production always handles the bills and tps, I would probably assume they handle everything. I’m sure this isn’t the first time they get a comped meal.

    • Julie says:

I agree. If someone was paying for your meal and left a tip, you don’t have to leave another tip.

    • Nev says:

      Right. There is no problem.

    • Kaiser says:

The waitress says she didn’t get a tip. It’s the Kardashian publicist who claims that they left a tip.

      • Ag says:

seriously. i am inclined to believe the waitress, not the KK handlers. tip, you cheap a$$holes! waiters are people who, unlike you, work for a living.

      • feebee says:

The management should have made sure a tip was included. If they can automatically put it on for parties over 6, they can work out how to do it in this case. It’s a pity the waitress is the one who was overlooked in this deal.

      • jane16 says:

Well, unless the kkk’s have a film of them leaving her a tip, I’m not trusting anything they say. Also, I don’t believe for a minute that people that live in the Hamptons would sign releases for a trashy “reality” show when they’re sitting at a restaurant for dinner. Some businesses undoubtedly signed them, but patrons at a restaurant in the Hamptons, signing anything without their lawyers, no way.

    • Macey says:

the kardashian ‘sources’ are the only ones saying that. Im sure if the waitress was actually tipped there wouldnt be a story. I dont know how all restaurants work but I know when I waited for a hotel, some of the customers got comped breakfast. we did get a preset tip with that but the amount was nominal, barely a tip at all and it was a preset amount so it did not matter how much the bill was, how many people or how fast and friendly you were, you got like .60 cents a person (this was back in the early 90s, might have been a little more but it was peanuts compared to getting a regular tip)when it was a comp breakfast.

    • Mixtape says:

I agree, not a fan, but I don’t see the problem. This wasn’t lunch for her, this was work–filming the show. When I go to big work lunches, I know that the bill and tip are being handled by whoever is in charge of paying it–I don’t drop a separate tip for my portion.

  6. eliza says:

I’d be damned before someone would get me to sign a release for this nonsense. What are they going to do? Have ppl thrown out of the restaurant if they don’t sign?

So this is how the Kardashians get richer by everything being comped and not tipping? So what if production left a tip, couldn’t Miss Money Bags have spared a $20?

    • Macey says:

I was wondering about the release thing too. what if you refused? which I would. there’s no way I would sign anything a Kardashian or anyone else put in front of me. They can pay for my lawyer to read it first and even then I still wouldnt. If you want that much privacy stay at home.

      • Peppa says:

A friend of mine refused to sign a release when she was at a restaurant where Jersey Shore was filming, and they blurred out her face. I’m not sure if that’s standard practice, but I have noticed blurred faces in the background of reality shows before. I would not want to be seen anywhere near a Kardashian either!

  7. jess says:

I think Kourtney sees scott as a sperm donor.

As for her not tipping, regardless if it was free or even if the producers tipped them, its common courtesy if someone helps you or serves you, you tip them. If she ever goes to that restaurant again i hope they spit in her food.

  8. lucy2 says:

It is so gross that this family gets comped for anything. Free rent for their dumb store? Must thrill all the local shop keepers who pay a fortune and work hard to establish their business. Free dinner? And probably free clothes or money for tweeting what that one is wearing.
E! is so quick to defend them, but I’m willing to believe the wait staff and other sources more than that stupid network’s PR person.

    • jane16 says:

They expect everything for free, wherever they are. They just walk to the front of the line and say they are “comped”. They’ve done it right in front of me many times. Sometimes they get it, sometimes the employee calls the manager over, in which case anything can happen. This is why everyone in my area hates them. They act like they’re the f’cking royal family of California. So rude, so arrogant, more so than any celebs I’ve ever know.

  9. wendi says:

So what if you’re at your favourite restaurant, they happen to be filming there and you don’t want to sign a release? How does it work?

    • word says:

I think you only have to sign a release if you’re on camera actually speaking. If you’re just in the background, they blur it out a bit so we can’t see your face. Most times when filming in a public place, they will ask if anyone is against being seen on camera…they take note of it and make sure your face isn’t shown.

  10. Mystified says:

You wouldn’t believe the number of people who think that when something is comped it entitles them to leave zero tip. They do this to both servers and hair stylists. To them if the tip is based on a percentage of the bill, if the bill is zero then the tip should be zero.

Another case of no good deed going unpunished.

    • PennyLane says:

Another pet peeve of mine is when people get a discount and calculate the tip based on the discounted price – NO, you calculate the tip on what the meal really cost.

Tipping should be abolished and replaced with a service fee included in the bill. I waited tables on and off for seven years in high school and college, and I promise you that most people tip pretty much the same wherever they go regardless of the service quality (don’t you?) and that a shocking number of people like to leave 5% or 10% tips or even nothing at all. These people are not fit to be members of society and should be kept at home!

    • SpookySpooks says:

You tip a hairstylist too? Jesus. I think if I lived in America I wouldn’t go anywhere because tipping would stress me out too much.
It’s appaling that waiters depend on tips and don’t have a set salary like they should have.

I’m glad she ID’d her outfit because that is probably the most expensive cheap looking outfit out there. She could have picked all of that stuff up at Goodwill.

  12. aenflex says:

I personally have never understood why, if I am patronizing an establishment and spending money on food and drinks, do I also have to pay the staff’s salary? That should be the responsibility of the owner of the establishment.
Don’t get me wrong, I do tip my waitstaff and I understand they way they are paid is not their fault. I’ve just always thought it was stupid that after spending $30 on an entree that cost the restaurant $6, and spending $25 on drinks that cost the restaurant even less than $6, why do I also have to pay the staff?? Boggles my mind.

    • Zipster says:

In Germany the payment for the staff is usually included, but still we tip waiter or waitress (10-20% depending on the service). The only time me or also my bf don’t give anything or just 5% is when the waitstaff is pretending to be dead or very unpolite.

    • KaitX says:

Yep I agree Aenflex. I moved from Ireland (where we tip 10% for exceptional service) to Vancouver where you tip 20% minimum for everything. I will tip that or above for good service, but I don’t really like doing it. Especially since they get a decent minimum wage here and stuff is expensive! Still, follow a country’s rules etc. etc!

      • Erinn says:

I’m in Nova Scotia – opposite side, though in a small town. If we go out to eat, and I get meh service, I’ll tip 15%, if I get great service around 20%. We do have a lot better wages for those working in the food industry than there is in the states, but still. If I get terrible service and a waitress who makes me feel like I’m putting him or her out to just get my food ordered (off the menu – no weird requests) or for her to refill my water, she or he is not getting a tip.

    • Kori says:

Just a way to pass on a large chunk of payroll onto the customer. The person who gets screwed is the waiter/waitress. If someone is a bad tipper they have no way to make that up and also if people linger and you don’t get the table changeover you lose out. This in turn angers customers who feel rushed out and under the gun for tipping even if service was mediocre. We went to Ruby Tuesdays on night, late, and it turns out our waitress had worked on a table for 2 hrs with a huge bill (liquor, the works) and the asses skipped out. She not only lost the tip but was on the hook for the bill! As it was already late and a quiet weeknight, the other servers were letting her take as many tables as she wanted but she was still working just to break even. We had a $40 dinner and left a $40 tip as that sort of thing just infuriates my husband–and me but he was especially vocal about it.

      • lucy2 says:

I hate that a restaurant would make the server be responsible for the bill. That should be on the restaurant itself.

    • SpookySpooks says:

We don’t tip at all here. Waiters can make a living out of their salary so tipping is not necessary. The only people I’ve ever seen tipping were tourists on the coast.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I used to work for some national chain restaurants in college, and it was really awful. We were only getting $3 an hour (the minimum wage for a tipped employee). They would over staff the restaurant, so each server only had 1 or 2 tables at a time…then they would make the servers clean the restaurant with their free time. Essentially, it was cheaper to hire a server at $3 an hour to clean, instead of hiring cleaning staff who would be subjected to a higher minimum wage.

  13. babythestarsshinebrite says:

Always leave a tip directly with your server. I have no faith in management when it comes to paying its employees tips and commissions or any extra monies.

    • PennyLane says:

Yes, tipping in cash is always best.

One restaurant that I worked for used to deduct the entire credit card processing fee for the bill from your tip if the customer used a credit card. We were always grateful for a cash tip. 🙂

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

I’m glad you brought this up, because I have always wondered if the server is getting the tip when it is left via debit or credit card when paying the bill. I always feel better leaving cash, but my husband always does it via debit card. It would be interesting to know how many servers actually get the tips left from cards…

      • Decloo says:

It’s illegal for restaurants to withhold tips left for servers via credit card. Waitstaff need to speak up at once if this is happening.

  17. Hello says:

What I do’t understand is why they always get free stuff, especially small, simply stuff like paying a restaurant bill. Like the Kardashian’s don’t have enough money to pay for their own damn salad. These untalented, unworthy people have had it too good and too easy for far too long. UGH!

    • Jayna says:

The restaurant got free publicity on a network. It’s called business, quid pro quo.

She’s basically acting. There is very little reality in their show. It’s scripted to the hilt. The scene was set up in advance by the production company, who probably scouted the location to shoot the lunch and set up the deal. She probably had nothing to do with where she wanted to eat. It was a scene.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Agreed. I don’t like the Kardashians, but this was a “meal” for production purposes. It would have been completely handled by show staff.

Shows like this are so scripted…they even make them order multiple times to get the shot right. I know someone who has written for this show, among others, and it is 100% scripted.

    • Decloo says:

The owner of the restaurant is also the owner of the retail space next door which is being used for the Kardashian boutique. At some point in the not so distant past there was some sort of problem with the restaurant (a fire, an illness outbreak or something-can’t remember) and the restaurant lost a lot of money. The owner needs the publicity badly. The official line is that she received no money for the retail space to the use of the restaurant for scenes (all of Southampton is mad at her) but local gossip says she got a cool $100K. I’m not excusing that cheap Kardashian person, who should have tipped anyway, but scenes being shot in the restaurant were part of the deal.

  18. Regarded says:

I wish all bad tippers could work in the service industry for just one day, and then they might see understand why tipping is important.
My best friend never tips, which is ridiculous to me. She claims that the wait staff already gets paid. This is extremely annoying bc she always orders a more expensive entree/drink when we go out to eat. At first, I would pay the tip for her portion of the meal too, but I started getting frustrated about having to pay an extra $4-5 on her behalf.
Now I request separate checks so the waitstaff knows that at least one person appreciated their efforts!

    • Irishserra says:

My, how I totally identify with your post. I have a friend whom I love dearly, but she married young and never had to work to support herself. I’m constantly picking up her slack in the tipping department when we go out because she is so obtuse when it comes to tipping. If one of her girls doesn’t like what they eat or there is an issue with the food, she faults the wait staff and takes it out on them by not leaving a tip. I’ve spoken to her about this numerous times and she just doesn’t get it. She considers me foolish and wasteful for leaving “exorbitant” tips.

      • Amulla says:

The person I know who doesn’t tip, also never worked a day in her life. She is married and her husband always supported her. She has no idea what its like to wait tables – or do any kind of paid work at all.

    • Kori says:

My late stepfather-in-law was like this. He’d tip 5% and that was for good service. My husband and I had all kinds of tricks for getting an extra tip to the waitress. It was just embarrassing but he always paid for the dinner so we couldn’t really say anything to him and he wasn’t going to change. But we always snuck the extra in there–one time I ‘forgot’ something and went back inside and Gave her the money with apologies.

    • Erinn says:

Can we also throw all the snarky customers into a call center for a day? I get yelled at for things I’ve never even touched multiple times a week, and I’m on the low call volume end of the center. I’ve even gotten yelled at because people don’t like the phone menu. It’s ridiculous.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      My grandparents are like this.

Kori, my mom and I are always doing the “I forgot something” trick too!

    • Amulla says:

I also get tired of having to pay more money to make up for what the non-tippers don’t pay.

I have noticed that people who don’t like to tip, are the same people who dine out a lot in restaurants – more than the average person. They will often whine about how they can’t afford to tip, while paying fifty dollars for a meal they could have made easily at home.

If someone doesn’t “believe” in tipping, they really don’t belong in fine restaurants. I’ve seen others kinds of bad manners in fine restaurants and its sad people weren’t taught better when they were growing up. They want to be in these places, but don’t know how to act in them.

    • Ange says:

To me that would signal an end to dining out with that person.

  20. Jill says:

I always tip at restaurants, but I don’t understand why I have to tip hair dressers or masseuses 20%. I’m paying for them to cut my hair or give me a massage and it’s already expensive. Why should I add another 20% on top of my bill? $5 should be enough.

    • me says:

Sometimes I’ve ended up paying a double tip because I didn’t realize until I got home that they automatically added a tip to my bill…plus I already left a cash tip as well. I think restaurants and other places should pay their staff hourly and therefore people shouldn’t feel the need to tip. I know where I live, wait staff get paid minimum wage plus get tips. I don’t tip the person who helped me at a clothing store. I don’t tip the person at Baskin Robbins for scooping my ice cream. They all get paid minimum wage as well or maybe above minimum wage. I know in some places in America, they get paid beneath minimum wage and are expected to earn tips as a way to get their wage up to or above minimum wage, in this situation I understand the need for tips.

    • manda says:

I always have anxiety over the tip I am supposed to leave for hairdressers. Is it 20%? I always forget to check beforehand!

Their cosmetic procedures don’t work that well, no wonder they are free services.

  22. Gina says:

Leaving a tip is not a thing everywhere. Where i’m from it isn’t.

  23. Kay says:

I hate how restaurants are. They don’t want to pay their waitstaff, they want customers to pay them their salaries. And a lot of people either don’t know that servers live off of tips or are jerks and don’t care that they do. I feel the worst when I see a really busy server running around like crazy and I think about how each table is going to be mad that he or she isn’t on top of refills and such and so won’t tip well. That’s messed up. When I see a server working that hard and really trying I always leave a good tip.

  24. me says:

Don’t they ever get tired of eating at restaurants? They never eat home cooked meals. I know it’s free and all but come on.

  27. Amulla says:

If someone gets poor service, the no tip is required.

But if the service is even halfway good, they should tip. I get embarassed when dining out with people who won’t leave a tip for their share of the food.

  28. Skinny girl in fat body says:

Can someone explain this tipping thing, you all sound as if it’s mandatory.
Sorry to sound silly I live in the uk and it’s not a big deal like it is here.
Just wondering does the waiters/ waitresses get a salary from the boss or is it purely on tips??

    • Tiffany :) says:

In the US, servers are paid a reduced rate. It is called “Minimum Wage for a Tipped Employee”. For example, if the minimum wage for non-tipped employees in a state is $8 per hour, minimum wage might be $4 an hour for a tipped employee.

Servers are very dependant on tips here. It is customary and expected because of the alternative minimum wage that applies to tipped employees.

  29. Just Me (and my Bobby McGee) says:

I don’t have time to read all these comments, but I’m sorry – what a freakin douche nugget. I currently live in a country in Asia where tipping is not customary, and not expected, and I STILL freakin tip. Because it makes a difference, ESPECIALLY out here. She is in a position of privilege and immense wealth and it’s customary in her culture. I hope she never finds herself in a position of needing to survive off of tip money. Then again, maybe she might learn something.

  30. Izzy says:

I guess having lots of kash doesn’t buy klass, does it? Even if production did leave a tip, and I’m not sure I believe it, I have to wonder if any of that tip money made its way to the server? It’s possible that the restaurant management took the entire thing, and therefore the server thought she got stiffed on the tip.

Slightly OT, but speaking of restaurants, it came out today that there was a card info breach at PF Changs earlier this year, so if you’ve dined there, keep an eye out.

  31. VK says:

I’m not sure about this business. I’ve worked in that restaurant and they are amazing about protecting their staff, celebrity or not. Most of the waitstaff is year round, and the locals are good about bonding when the summer crazy comes to town. I don’t see management not letting the waitstaff know about the tip, wouldn’t happen. Perhaps kourtney didn’t know what was going on, but someone knew exactly what they were doing. It’s a shame since most celebrities will over tip, or tell you about when they waited tables. It’s just a handful that are total wankers.
Production have been calling around to a few restaurants, and they all turned them down after trying to tempt them with more money. We have out hands full with the invasion of people that bring a whole new meaning to “obnoxious”. The last thing anyone needs is a kardashian. Btw-Chevy Chase will try to stiff the bill any chance he gets..
