Kanye West fulfills his community service by lecturing young fashion students

Last year, Kanye West assaulted a paparazzo at LAX – you can see some of the photos here. As far as violent assaults on the paparazzi, it was pretty meh. Kanye basically rushed the guy and pushed him over while the guy braced himself. There were reports that Kanye would be charged with a felony and blah blah blah, but this happened in California so basically nothing happened. Kanye accepted some sort of plea deal that involved some community service. But Yeezington’s community service is a lot different than the average community service that you or I might face. Yeezus went to speak to fashion students about leather jeggings!

Kanye West won’t be picking up trash on the side of the road any time soon … because we’ve learned he’s kicking off his community service in fashionable form — teaching at a fashion school. Yeezy hit up the L.A. Trade Technical College Monday in his paparazzi beatdown criminal case to speak with students about his personal experiences in the fashion biz … and hopefully about leather jogging pants as well.

We’re told this is Kanye’s 3rd visit to LATTC in the last 6 weeks … which specializes in designing apparel. Today’s lesson was all about designers and it lasted 3 hours. In case you don’t remember — Kanye cut a plea deal back in March — avoiding jail by agreeing to 24 months informal probation and 250 hours community service.

We’re told Kanye has been chipping away at his hours by speaking at multiple colleges. Still — not a bad way to knock out community service … and avoid wearing that unflattering orange vest … it’s so last season.

[From TMZ]

You know what? I don’t hate this. I think it would be stupid to try to get Kanye to, say, pick up trash on highway or work at a morgue or something. I bet the fashion students love hearing him talk about fashion and style, and I would guess that Kanye gets a kick out of it too. Even though Kanye loves to rant and be a narcissistic monster, I bet he loves talking to young people about their style visions and stuff. Hell, this should be a reality show. I want to see Kanye mentor young fashion students about leather jeggings and fringed shoes.

i guess a fashion student lectured by this guy is the equivalent of a good singer being critiqued by j lo on idol

  2. Jaderu says:

Meanwhile the horror that’s washing over mankind in the form of jeggings goes unchecked and un-prosecuted.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have mixed feelings. I don’t think he needs to pick up trash, either, but it’s called “community service” for a reason. How is this serving his community? Talking about himself is his favorite activity. It doesn’t seem much like a punishment.

    • eliza says:

Just asking, but why is he too good to pick up trash?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        He’s not, you’re right.

      • Sparklemotion says:

I don’t think it’s that he’s too good to pick up trash, but that giving these talks is a really great benefit to the community. If the point of community service is to serve the community rather than serve as a punishment, then this makes sense. Obviously people who end up having to pick up trash have more to offer the community as well, but don’t have the fancy lawyers who can get their creative service ideas approved in court. Our justice system doesn’t come close in many regards to being equitable!

      • hmmm says:

Picking up trash is just as much of a benefit to the community. Why is he this special snowflake who shouldn’t get his hands dirty?

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

I think this just another example of the difference in punishment for the rich and famous versus the poor.

      • Ahot says:

Ain’t that the truth! The poor can’t win for loosing, smh

      • Sparklemotion says:

Precisely! I like that Kanye is doing this, but it’s a very visible sign that people get treated differently — we usually just don’t notice how poorly the poor are treated.

      • Tammy says:

I know someone who did community service at the firehouse in town, he loved it. His community service was to wash down the fire trucks, paint or whatever the volunteer chief asked him to do. One time it was to assist at a fundraiser, so yes some poor people can get some cool community service jobs.

      • hmmm says:

A great way to feed his narcissism.

      • ManchurianGlobal says:

Maybe you’re right, but Chris Brown picked up trash by the highway and I don’t think he’s that hard up for money.

    • Mixtape says:

This is a city-run trade school–i.e., not even a community college. I doubt they have cool guest speakers very often, so this probably meant the world to them. Regardless of how obnoxious he is, to me, inspiring these students is a better service to the community than picking up trash. In addition, while I doubt he sat down and planned out a lengthy address, it probably took more preparation than just showing up for work duty.

      • word says:

I doubt Kanye did any preparation. Geniuses don’t need to prepare ! Don’t assume everyone likes Kanye or respects his “fashion sense”. He needs to make a name for himself in the fashion industry before he can teach others how to do it. He doesn’t have a successful clothing line, he just likes to have lunch with big name designers.

      • QQ says:

Exactly what I assumed Mixtape, and Really other than NYC during fashion week or some such what design school gets a guest speaker like that, a view into the upper echelons of fashion even as a schmoozer (which he’s done a couple of things so not JUST that!) , is almost like, Think of the possibilities, No!?

      • hmmm says:

What’s inspirational about him? Let’s see, you can make millions of dollars, act like a thug and never have to pay the price. And you get to pretend you’re actually a fashion genius.

If Kanye wants to beautify the world, why not start with getting rid of the garbage?

  4. word says:

Why punish the students? With the length of his rants, their 2 hour class would be 5 hours. How is this punishment for him? If he wasn’t a celeb he’d be picking up trash near the highway like the rest of the people who have to do community service. The judge should have at least had Kanye work in a shelter for abused women/men or a homeless shelter…something that would open HIS eyes.

  5. Dawn says:

What a joke! This dude is just one step from going over the ledge so the judge gives him something that will elevate that already over the top ego of his. What can he “teach” anyone when the secret of his success is auto tune and “sampling” other people’s work and calling it his own. That white t that he so called designed was something right of a 1940’s Sears catalog. He needs to be sent out to pickup garbage on the side of the freeway like anyone else would. He is NOT special, well yes he is special but not in that way!

    • FingerBinger says:

I think Kanye is nuts, but he probably does know a few things about the fashion industry. He knows what sells and what doesn’t sell. He knows that begging can get a Vogue cover.

      • me says:

Why can’t he pass his fashion expertise onto his wife then? Did you see the horrible women’s shoes he designed? Other than his sneakers, what has he sold successfully?

    • Lauren says:

I totally agree with you, Dawn.
I don´t understand why he is allowed to give lectures instead of proper community service. Like someone else pointed out, I wish the judge had him work at a shelter for abused women/kids/men or a homeless shelter. So maybe for a second it would open his eyes and humble him in some way.
I don´t even understand how he, of all people, is qualified to give a lecture! Just because he sits front row and owns some shiny coffee-table books doesn´t equal knowledge, talent, and vision. It´s a f*cking insult to the students who actually have the skills to design.
Will he give lectures at law school next just because he has been in a court room before?
He is a megalomaniac prick and I´m so tired of hearing about him and/ or his wifes shenanigans.

  6. eliza says:

Ummm since when is community service “lecturing students about fashion”? My community service ( I was young,, got caught in a park smoking pot with friends. Ooooops) consisted of 40 hrs cleaning and serving meals at a Senior Citizens Center. A community service which I incidentally LOVED and became a volunteer for after my service hours were done.

How about Kanye helping in some real way? Too good to scrub a toilet? Serve a meal? Throw away the days trash? Mop?

    • word says:

      He’s a celeb…they get special treatment.

      • eliza says:

Not defending Chris Brown in the least but he at least was picking up trash and cleaning graffiti. I think even Paris Hilton and Lohan did SOME actual labor too like cleaning and trash pick up. RDJ also was picking up trash years ago.

      • me says:

Chris Brown had to pick up garbage only after breaking his probation…same with Paris and Lindsay I believe.

    • oh thank GOD someone is FINALLY taking up the cause of these poor, underserved fashion students who are all forced to have to be seen in LAST SEASON’S clothes.

Wow. First Kim’s “essay” on the Beverly Hills Issue, and now Kanye is saving the universe, one fashion student at a time.

      Our saviours.

  7. QQ says:

Aw I bet they were excited, say what you will but Ye’ is steeped into thebworld of fashion and has tried a few styles on himself..I bet that was fun for the students

    • Lauren says:

Sorry but everyone tried a few styles on themselves. As a kid it I played dress up but that does not make me the next Coco Chanel.
I don´t want to be harsh or rude but I´m extremely tired of celebrities who overestimate their abilities. And Kanye West is the embodiment of that attitude.

    • Mixtape says:

I agree, QQ (see my comment at #17). But it looks like we are the odd women out today.

      • kri says:

Well, I will say…Kanye certainly has experimented with the fashion world. I wonder what it is like to be lectured by Kanye West for 3 hours. Perhaps it was the students who were doing their own court-ordered community service by keeping Yeezy away from flower walls and Photoshop for a couple hours.

  8. Amy Tennant says:

Whatever happened with that incident about the kid that accosted Kim at a doctor’s office or something? I can’t remember if anything came of that.

    • word says:

It never went to court. The kid reportedly struck a deal with Kanye for a certain amount of money.

    • Tifygodess24 says:

I would bet large sums of money it never happened in the first place , that was all Kardashian lies – the whole situation from beginning to end.

      • word says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was all fake. In the day and age of twitter and facebook, the victim remained nameless…how is that possible? TMZ always gets the dirt yet they never found out this guy’s name or back story? Come on.

  9. Eloise says:

How much do these serious students of fashion get out of this? Can this guy even thread a machine? Does he know what a bobbin’s function is? Really, what does he know about fashion? In the above picture he wearing a shirt inside out. What a profound fashion statement.

    • me says:

How dare you ! He is a fashion icon and so is his wife. Don’t you know plain t-shirts paired with jeans or black leather pants is something only a visionary can pair together? Don’t you know skin tight dresses with your boobs and ass hanging out will be all the rage?

  10. dorothy says:

Oh great! Now they’ll be students dressing like Kim. What did they do to deserve that? Sounds like they got the bad end of the deal.

  11. claire says:

This sounds more like a punishment for the students.

  12. idk says:

The judge must have been a fan of leather jogging pants to let Kanye slide like this. This is more a punishment for those poor students than it is for Kanye. If I were the judge I would have made Kanye volunteer at Sears. He could help them try to sell the Kardashian Kollection.

  13. For the life of me, I can’t see how this is community service.

  14. Ag says:

3 hours of kanye rants? fml. poor students.

  15. Jaded says:

    I can hear him now….

“Imma tell you kids…I AM the GOD of fashion. Lissen up!

    Imma brand endorser
    A fashion enforcer
I rap for goods I rap for hoods
I set the scene with a mean fashion team
But they don’t know sh*t about dressin’ b*tches
So I show ’em the fabrics, I show ’em the stitches
I show ’em the knack for showin’ her rack
I show ’em the key to set her booty free!

Cuz I am the fashion GOD and I’m mod and I gotta great bod
    For fashion!”

  16. Tifygodess24 says:

So the non-celebrities get the trash clean and hard work up while these entitled idi*ts get to “teach” others . Last I knew he doesn’t have a degree in fashion , and throwing on some dirty leather pants everyday doesn’t mean he’s fashionable either. I’m so tired of people with “influence” ,fame or wealth getting special treatment.

  17. Mixtape says:

Again, not to stick up for Kanye too much, but I lived in LA for many years and for everyone saying this isn’t community service, please understand the nature of this school and the students who go there. It is essentially an adult-education program–i.e., “college” for people who don’t have high school diplomas. It also specializes in providing education to immigrant children–kids who grew up in California but cannot go to college because they are not legal residents–and helping them apply for legal residency. Meeting with Kanye, hearing his insight on the fashion industry, and even hearing one of his rants about how he’s awesome and you can be awesome, too because design is all powerful steve jobs blah blah, is a HUGE inspirational push for these students. If he were doing it for a charity, we wouldn’t hesitate to call it service.

Now, if by “it’s not community service,” you really mean “it’s not punishment enough! I want to see him suffer!” just remember that everyone in LA, prosecutors and judges included, hates the paps for all the trouble they cause. What Kanye did is simply not considered assault the same way that Chris Brown’s assault of Rihanna is.

    • me says:

Assault is assault. You put your hands on someone, that is enough to get charged. Secondly, please give the students at that school some credit. Don’t assume they all love and respect Kanye. Some of them may have rolled their eyes at him (and I wouldn’t blame them).

    • eliza says:

Him lecturing students on something he has no degree in or experience in beyond wearing leather pants, red high tops and a tshirt is not really benefitting the students other than for them to meet a celebrity and him to avoid the actual act of providing a service to others for the betterment of the community at large.

I appreciate the idea behind the trade school and appreciate your insight but I find his community service insulting when the non celebrity has to actually do something to help clean, serve or repair. If he wasn’t Yeezus, he would have been scrubbing graffiti or working in a soup kitchen cleaning pots and pans. His celebrity status as a singer does not make him a special snowflake at all.

I am not attacking you at all. I wish that a REAL clothing designer with actual working experience were lecturing. Not some singer with a God complex who thinks he is the authority on everything from fashion to who deserves MTV awards.

      • swack says:

They could even get one of the designers from Fashion Runway to do the lecturing and I’m sure they would get more out of it because those designers know what it is like to struggle while doing something you love. Also, I feel community service should be something that also teaches the person doing the community service something. If nothing else a little humility and compassion for those who don’t have what the person doing cs has.

  18. Jackson says:

Why should Kanye ‘get a kick’ out of his community service? It’s supposed to be a form of punishment and also be a measure of something beneficial to the larger community. I see no punishment for him in this. Legal system fail, yet again.

    • Sparklemotion says:

The point of community service is to benefit the community as a sort of reparation for the crime committed against it — not to punish the offender. Aside from picking up trash (which is reserved as a sort of punishment for those who break probation), many of the things people do as community service, others do as volunteer work. For example, serving meals to homeless people isn’t a punishment, it’s a benefit to the community.

      • lunchcoma says:

I think community service is meant to both teach the offender something and to benefit the community. Serving meals to the homeless hopefully does both, especially if the offender is a privileged person who takes that for granted. Other activities like working with animals both benefit the community and hopefully teach empathy. I don’t think lecturing fashion students achieves any of those goals. It’s of dubious value to the students, could probably be arranged for by the school through other means, and I can’t imagine what it would have to teach a man who already is used to having a public platform and airing his ideas to others. I don’t think picking up trash is a good punishment, either, but I would have much preferred he be asked to do something outside the realm of his usual experiences.

    • hmmm says:

It only benefits his narcissism and it’s not a potential learning experience.

  19. Dragonlady sakura says:

Terrible punishment. So Kanye gets to scream at a bunch of fashion students that he’s the greatest rapper alive and that’s community service? Okay…

    • me says:

He probably told them all they aren’t good enough to be in the fashion industry and to just give up now.

  20. idk says:

They should have had him teach a psychology class instead. Secretly, it would have been a case study for the students….they could have diagnosed him.

  21. LMB says:

If the style of Kim K. is anything to go by, this guy has no business in telling others about style and fashion. A job in the morgue might be a lot better, it could be bringing him a bit closer to earth.

    • Candy Love says:

It is member the leather outfits and fug shore that Kim wore for most of 2012 and last year that was all Kanye .

Dude has no business talking about fashion to these students when he dress his wife in too tight fug outfits.

  22. Ruyana says:

Any man who goes to a formal event with his pregnant girlfriend dressed as a couch has ZERO sense of fashion and a ton of repressed (or maybe not so repressed) hostility.

  23. lunchcoma says:

I’m not okay with that at all. He shouldn’t necessarily have to pick up trash (I don’t really approve of the public shaming nature of that whether the person is a celebrity or an ordinary person), but the point of community service is supposed to be learning something from the experience. You’re not supposed to have a blast while doing it.

    • hmmm says:

There is no shame in picking up trash. It truly is a community service and a community problem we all share and it’s too bad we all don’t do it.

What’s wrong with publicly shaming a thug anyway?

      • lunchcoma says:

I don’t think picking up trash is shameful in and of itself. The community service programs where it’s obvious that someone is picking up trash as a punishment rather than as volunteer work and where passersby can look down on the workers are a problem. I think they’re more likely to create anger than to teach offenders empathy or compassion or thoughtfulness, and I think they bring out the worst in people who are inclined to shame those who have made mistakes.

Also, not everyone who’s committed a criminal offense is a “thug.” Kanye certainly isn’t, no matter what else he may be.

  24. Vl says:

As a SoCal resident I’m prepared to vote for anyone that is devoted to put our tax money towards the penal system and stop these embarrassments.

  25. Izzy says:

Oh, good. And a whole new generation of fashion designers will try to dress everyone like Kim Kardashian.

Running out now to stock up on decent clothing, while I still can…

  26. DrFunkenstein says:

Puhleeze. My Corgi could probably do a better job of fashion design than this delusional egomaniac.
