Taylor Swift’s overzealous bodyguards cause disturbances in Rhode Island

Here are some new photos of Taylor Swift, wandering around NYC with her new BFF Karlie Kloss. I actually love Swifty’s dress here. Very cute. Very flattering. The heels are overkill, but she’s living out her Sex & the City fantasy, so just let her have it.

Last year, Taylor Swift flipped her Kennebunkport, Massachusetts property for a profit and purchased a huge, wedding-cake-looking mansion on the coast of Rhode Island. I could see the fantasy playing out in Swifty’s mind as it happened – the pretty (but shy!) singer, walking on a lonely New England beach and she happens to meet some wealthy, famous, interesting man with good hair who sweeps her off her feet. The reality is quite different though. Swifty has not been welcomed in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Residents have accused her of cutting off access to a public beach, of causing a commotion whenever she’s in town and for changing the sea wall (which, to be fair to Swifty, she did because of legit environmental concerns). So, what’s the problem now?

Taylor Swift and her security team have been causing even more trouble, trouble, trouble for her Rhode Island neighbors. Onlookers exclusively tell RadarOnline.com that bodyguards for the singer, who owns a $17 million beachside mansion in Watch Hill, were harassing diners as Swift ate breakfast with two friends at Westerly eatery The Cooked Goose on Saturday morning.

“Taylor and her two friends took a table toward the back of the restaurant,” the onlooker says. “But her two security guards took a seat at the bar, eyeing the other diners like a hawk.”

As the seemingly oblivious 24-year-old noshed on eggs covered in hot sauce with a young blond woman and a dark-haired man, her guards ran around the restaurant yelling at guests who touched their cell phones.

“My friend took her phone out of her purse, and one of the men screamed ‘NO PICTURES!’” the diner says. “She was just checking the time!”

“There were no overzealous fans approaching her,” the source continues. “Some people didn’t notice she was there until the bodyguards created a scene.”

Before leaving, the star, dressed in a blue-checkered dress and long cream sweater with a red bow in her hair, let the help cover the bill.

Later in the day, the insider claims, Swift’s security blocked off a portion of Watch Hill beach so the singer could sun privately.

“They were turning people away,” fumes the source. “It’s a public beach!”

[From Radar]

DO NOT LOOK AT THE SWIFTY. THE SWIFTY HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. Seriously, nothing screams “LOOK AT ME” more than a phalanx of bodyguards screaming at customers in a public restaurant. While I think Radar is probably exaggerating what really happened, it also wouldn’t surprise me if Tay-Tay maintains a large assignment of bodyguards to disrupt any peasant plot to get closer to the Swifty. She keeps at least 2-3 bodyguards with her when she’s just dropping by the NYC gym to primp and put on more makeup. So, of course she would have hyper-aggressive bodyguards with her while she dined amongst the peasants.

Nothing makes my blood boil more than the public losing access to services and personal freedoms over some celeb’s king-complex. I shake with rage over things like public bathrooms and beaches being turned into no-go zones, streets being closed down, and all manner of disruptions to the public who already have WAY less privilege than the Holy Whomever. The imposed hierarchy and all the implications of such drive me bananas.

Call me a Leveller, I don’t care. I live by my “Godwina” handle. Rage-boil.

    • TorontoE says:

I’m with you. Losing access to a public beach? Why doesn’t she buy a property with a private beach area then? She can afford whereas us plebes depend on public beaches for swim and sand. I only hope that this was the bodyguard’s dumb idea, not hers.

    • Ayre says:

This makes me mad, too. I don’t have any general dislike for her as a celebrity, but stories like this make her look SO BAD.

    • Christin says:

I agree. She has tons of money and free time to dine or sunbathe privately. Even if half of these accusations are true, it’s bad.

Does she shut down the gym restroom or wherever she goes to primp for her silly pap strolls?

      • Agreed. This is a stunt, and it is going to be the undoing of her…which is actually fine with me, as I am getting really effing sick of these staged NYC pap shots. I like the outfit above, but NOBODY dresses like that in the middle of the day in New York. A self-respecting New York woman would have something way more urban and serviceable on her feet, and the Overkill Pumps would be in her handbag for later, if they were there at all. I call shenanigans on that one.

        Enough already Taylor.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

I would have called the police and the media immediately. That’s bullshit. Go tan in your backyard princess.

      • Tiffany :) says:

That is the thing that seems odd to me. Why tan on the public beach when you have a house on the beach with plenty of sun and a private pool?

      • Godwina says:

Good point. Private security goons aren’t “officers of the peace” (like cops) and don’t have the authority to tell me not to use my own damn phone. Heck, these men weren’t even employed by the establishment in question like security guards/mall cops are, so they have zero authority on those premises. It’s bullying and intimidating behaviour by one private citizen against another. (If it actually happened. Who knows? but stuff like this does happen, so I’m raging in a general sense. This is a major reason why I give TIFF a wide berth, much as I love film!).

    • ol cranky says:

@Godwina, what about the plight of the poor, oppressed and discriminated against celebrity? Have you learned nothing from Kanye’s activism?!

  2. Tracy says:

Sounds like Swifty should just eat breakfast at home.

  3. Dingeliding says:

I do wonder whether she ever does anything completely by herself, without an entourage/bodyguards. Like when she did that “road trip” with Karlie Kloss, they clearly had a driver. I recognize she needs bodyguards: she’s a young woman who lives on her own, she’s incredibly rich etc. But if I were her, it would drive me mad to be surrounded by people ALL the time.

  4. Etrain says:

It was Hyannis. Kennebunkport is in Maine.

  5. Xantha says:

I do believe there’s some truth to this. A random person on Twitter got a blurry picture of her eating at a restaurant and said her bodyguards were mean, but the fan didn’t actually approach her.
This is all on her. She’s their boss and therefore has the power to stop them from being overzealous.

I get her concern, given her history with stalkers, but her bodyguards can protect her without harassing people who are just going about their business.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

That would explain the bodyguard yelling “No pictures.” He was doing his job if, as you say, another diner was taking pictures of her with a cell phone, rude but perhaps understandable.

      • Moffa says:

Except they are in a public establishment. Celebrities get their picture taken – fact. It obviously doesn’t bother her because she dolls herself up for the paps on a daily basis. If someone was at a private event, where pictures were not allowed, I’d get security enforcing the policy. But to have a bodyguard say something like this at a public venue is silly. They can’t take the persons phone or forbid them from taking a picture. Didn’t Justin Bieber recently grab a fans phone and catch a ton of heat for it? If they want privacy, go somewhere with a private room.

  6. Belle Epoch says:

3 bodyguards? Is that normal? Some celebrities walk around NYC with none. Has she been threatened a lot? Sandra Bullock needs those bodyguards, not Swifty!

    • paranormalgirl says:

She had a stalker who got onto her property and threatened to kill anyone who came between him and Taylor. She has a three year restraining order against him. So yeah, she does need the security. They should, however, remain as unobtrusive as possible

  7. Liz says:

    She is working that outfit.

    • Decloo says:

But those stripper shoes need to be incinerated.

      • MoxyLady007 says:

I think she is finally feeling confident enough to wear heels. She is quite tall and that can make heels less appealing. So I think she is bringing out all the shoes she always wanted to wear but didn’t.

  8. Lucy2 says:

That dress is super cute. Her guards behavior not so much. I have no issue with them restricting people on her property, but at a diner or public beach? No.

    • Algernon says:

As I understand it, the issue is that her property is *on* a public beach. She doesn’t have a private beach, her house overlooks public land. Even if she’s sunbathing in front of her house, the beach is still public. They don’t have the right to impede people’s access just because she’s sitting there.

They have problems like this in Malibu all the time, which is why I don’t go to Malibu beaches, unless it’s a state park and there’s no homeowner issue to begin with. There’s nothing worse than walking up a beach, trying to enjoy the lovely day, when some rich person yells at you for existing in their space.

  9. Lizzie says:

I read somewhere that the pink heels pic is of her coming out of the gym. COME ON. At least pretend to work out.
    God she’s irritating.

    • Elise says:

Exactly! She can stop pretending that she’s working out. Based on her frequent posing, she KNOWS she’s getting pap’d all the time. I mean…those heels? After a workout? GIRL BYE.

    • mia girl says:

Last week I was in a boutique near the gym where she works out. The owner, who likes Swift, was telling me that there have rarely been photogs/paparazzi in that neighborhood… but lately with Swift, it looks like a parade goes by the boutique as she and the photos walk past. She says there is no way these photogs happened upon Swift. She must have called them to come, at least the first time.

Other interesting thing I learned, Orlando Bloom recently bought a 3bedroom loft in Swift’s same building.

  10. Amanda says:

She’s getting too thin, whatever, call me a concern troll.

Anyways, I remember reading a story on her years ago that mentioned some of the creepy old dudes who show up solo to her shows. The reporter brought up some rando sketch he saw and taylor went “he’s probably on a list somewhere.” Meaning, I don’t blame her for having bodyguards — there’s some scary people out there.

    • Tracy says:

So have body guards but don’t let those body guards harass other people. The majority of people are there vacationing with family and friends and don’t give a crap about Taylor Swift. My family has a house 10 minutes down the road and guess how many times we have tried to search Swifty out? Zero… Zero times.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

I absolutely think she should have body guards. And I can understand the paranoia of dealing with an unknown public who feels entitled to you. That said – calm your tits and eat your eggs.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

She should stay home if she’s worried about random people at diners.

  11. Po says:

I wonder how well it would go down with her if someone told her no pictures every time she reached for her phone or tried to stop her from going to areas of a public beach?

    • Decloo says:

Or how about barring her from their restaurant because she and her bodyguards make too much of a scene.

  12. Tiffany27 says:

Those shoes look heavier than her.

    • Lauren says:

Horrible shoes. Every time I see these pap walk pictures, I hear that Paper Doll song by John Mayer. These pics are proof of her egocentric ways. Taylor looks like a stiff paper Barbie doll lost in New York.

  13. Abbott says:

So why aren’t these guards causing a scene while she’s being photographed leaving the gym everyday? Huh.

    • Allie says:

      EXACTLY.

Also, while I think the dress is super cute, I hate the shoes and her headband with it.

  14. Nev says:

    enough.

  15. PennyLane says:

    What a brat.

  16. Pumpkin Pie says:

So when a famous person pretends to go to the gym for a workout but in fact they don’t exercise, what do they actually do inside? I know it’s a very stupid question. But why bother? There are many places where they can get papped.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

It’s a convenient excuse for running into the paps during the day and a safe PR storyline.

  17. GIRLFACE says:

Okay, that’s a bit much. Just put up a complete partition between Swifty and the peasants and barricade it with razor wire and armed guards next time.No yelling necessary.

  18. Algernon says:

I see that kind of bodyguard crap all the time in LA, and from much less famous people, so I doubt Radar is exaggerating. I’m sure that Swifty has real security concerns, but there’s no reason for her bodyguards to be scolding people in public. In this day and age, the simple reality of being famous is that people are going to take your picture. Have your security prevent them from actually disturbing you (within reason, there’s no reason to lay hands on someone unless they pose an immediate physical threat), but unless the restaurant has an actual “no photos” policy to enforce, you’re going to have to risk someone taking a picture while you’re eating. Sorry. Let your millions comfort you in your time of need.

On another note, I found out why all the celebrities in London are going to that Chiltern Firehouse all the time. It’s run by the same people who own the Chateau Marmont and they have the same “no photos” policy. People will be papped going in and out, but once inside, no one will disturb them while they’re eating/hanging out.

  19. Lila says:

I am side-eying this. Then again I side-eye everything from Radar. I don’t understand why this site treats them seriously honestly.

From what I can remember, she got all the permits and approvals she needed and was even supported by the state for repairing the wall. The public beach in that first story was actually her property. The previous owners had allowed it to be treated like a public beach but it was not actually. As far as this story, why is no one complaining? If she is hassling other paying customers and people visiting a public beach, why is Radar the only one hearing about this? I think because of her celebrity and locked down lifestyle she’s a pain in the ass. That doesn’t mean she’s doing anything specifically wrong, just that she feels entitled and the other residents don’t want to deal. Should have gone to the Hamptons, Swifty.

    • Decloo says:

Noooooo. We don’t want her here either.

      • JJJ says:

So that gives you the right to bitch and complain about something so mundane? She owns her property. If you don’t like it, well, too bad.

  20. Elias says:

I wonder how she would react if one day no one showed up , took pictures or paid one iota of attention …

  21. Happy21 says:

I just read this morning that she is now worth 150 million dollars!!! That is insane! Of course she needs security and I guess with that much money and making so much money people care and people want to see her daily pap quests in NYC

    • JJJ says:

Actually, according to Forbes as of June, 2013 her net worth was 220 million dollars and she has earned 64 million since then, giving the total to be 284 million. The 150 million quoted is from a website that hasn’t updated their figures (or is an old report). I trust Forbes more than other quoted sources.

  22. JJJ says:

You all are commenting on an article by Radar online; one known for twisting facts and getting their stories wrong. And as far as the beach issue goes; there isn’t an issue; she has not denied any one access to beach front that is not on her property. As far as I know, the prior owner of her Rhode Island residence allowed people access on the property, but now that miss Swift owns the property she can do what she wants with her own property. Stop ragging on misinformation.

  23. lemon says:

I don’t understand why she chose such an out of the way place in Rhode Island as a summer get away. There isn’t much there and the people are not used to celebrity in any form. Hamptons would have been better or even Martha’s Vineyard. Kennebunkport ME not MA would also be a weird choice unless you want to hang out with the Bush’s.
