Phil Robertson speaks out on his GQ controversy, charges of racism & bigotry

phil parade1

Late last year, Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson gave an incredibly offensive interview to GQ Magazine – go here to read our coverage. The fallout was immediate, and it was a gossip/media/mainstream news story for weeks as A&E tried to figure out what to do while half of America was like “my God, Phil is such a bigot and a homophobe” and the other half of America was like “Free speech means you can’t criticize him ever!” Phil and Duck Dynasty came out on top, sort of. Their fan-base rallied around them, they’re still on TV and they’re still making lots and lots of money. I think A&E probably lost some advertisers but overall… it was zero sum game. So what does Phil have to say about all of this nine months later? Eh.

Throw whatever shade you want at Phil Robertson — he’s not about to duck and cover. As evidenced by his controversial comments about race and homosexuality in GQ last December, the 68-year-old Duck Dynasty patriarch isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even if it alienates fans of his family’s A&E reality show. In fact, he’s about to put himself out there again in a new book, unPHILtered: The Way I See It.

“I don’t worry too much about people hating or insulting me,” Robertson tells Us Weekly’s Asher Fogle in the new issue, on stands Friday. “I’m a sinful man, and I’ve made a lot of mistakes. People have reason to hate me.”

That said, he thinks the GQ controversy was overblown. “All I did was quote a passage of scripture from antiquity,” the father of four says of the interview, in which he lumped homosexuality with sins like bestiality and adultery. “They’re mad at me, but I’m really just quoting what God said, so He’s the one they have a problem with.”

As for his remarks suggesting that black people were “singing and happy” in the pre-Civil-Rights-era South? “I was just giving my experience,” he tells Us of working on a Louisiana cotton farm in the 1960s. “The point I was making was that even when our black brothers didn’t have their civil rights, those people had that one thing the government couldn’t take from them: their faith. They would sing spiritual songs as they were going across those cotton fields.”

A self-proclaimed “poor white boy,” Robertson insists he meant no offense by the comments. “Old Jesse [Jackson] got mad at me and said something about how I was a Jim Crow and a racist,” he recalls of the backlash. “We don’t look at people like black, white, and brown. We’re all members of the human race.”

Pitting people against one another, he says, is why we have gun violence. “It’s never been a weapons problem,” he posits. “It’s a human heart condition of anger and hatred. If people loved God and loved each other, the last thing you would ever contemplate is to murder your neighbor.”

For more from our interview with the Duck Dynasty star — including his thoughts on politics and government, his reaction to being called a “bigot,” and why he hates social media (and has never even “turned on a computer”) — pick up the new issue of Us Weekly.

[From Us Weekly]

Sigh… I have a lot of thoughts about this, most of which are too rant-y to even publish. Phil saying that he was just quoting scripture almost gave me a rage-stroke, for one. But you know what? I honestly feel like this is the kind of “show” that people want to see – it’s like a Southern white-guy “minstrel” show, an extreme and offensive version of how some Southerners feel about race, gender and LGBT issues. It feels like ignorance is being defended because, aw shucks, these are just simple country folk in the South and of course those people think that way, they can’t help it. The support Phil has gotten is patronizing, and the fact that he’s still shilling it just shows that he’s in on it and he’s laughing all the way to the bank.

‘Duck Dynasty’ star on ISIS: Convert or kill them: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2014/09/03/phil-robertson-duck-dynasty-isis-convert-or-kill/15008203/

Can I volunteer his independent services? I will start a donation campaign to ship him over. Then he can work his magic. Any other takers?

    • Lady Macbeth says:

Add my donation. Lets ship him directly there…

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, I’ll chip in. I bet it would work, too. He could just talk to ISIS and everything would be fine. He’s such a genius. I really admire him and his many insights into the happy lives of pre-civil rights black people, how anyone who supports gays actually hates God, wow, just too many intelligent remarks to cover. As a Southerner, I’m especially proud to have him representing my little section of the world. So, let’s all contribute to a fund to send him to straighten out ISIS. It would certainly solve one problem.

      • Kiddo says:

Reality TV represents no one, except for the lowest common denominator in all geographical areas. None of us want to ‘own’ any of the housewife franchises either.*

        * Apologies for the never-ending rants on the ‘reality’ genre.

      • mimif says:

        You’re back!! 🔥🔥🔥

      • Kiddo says:

        @mimif, Hey sweetie!

      • mimif says:

Phew. I was starting to get concerned that you went off to teach women’s studies at a liberal arts college with all the horse shit that has been going down in this little neck of the woods. Don’t ever disappear again (that’s my job). 😉

      • Kiddo says:

@mimif, What happened, or is it better not to ask or know?

      • mimif says:

Oh nothing (cough) much happened, except the internet imploded on Sunday and I was ferverishly scrolling for your response. Instead, you were sipping Kool-Aid & roasting weenies in Montauk. Oh wait, you were just getting back from Burning Man where you were practicing your fire breathing skillz!

    • Dawn says:

Well to me the “convert or kill” is exactl;y what ISIS stands for. I am tired of people like him having such a huge platform to speak from because he basically just continues the dumbing down of America. A&E used to be such a good channel until they caught the reality bug, now it is pure crap and I never turn it on any more. I wish cable would give us all the chance to pick what channels we want to pay for so I can stop contributing to A&E, E!, TLC and a few other worthless channels. Truly.

      • Kiddo says:

The platform was Fox News. We’d all be better off if the propaganda channel was dismantled, as well.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“Well to me the “convert or kill” is exactl;y what ISIS stands for”
That is what I thought as well. Way to show how much like them you are, Phil!

    • Alicia says:

I’m all in favor of sending all the adult male Duck Dynasty members over to Iraq to fight ISIS. Let’s see how tough they are. It’s very easy being bloodthirsty safe in America – they – and Phil specifically – should put their views into action if they really believe what they say.

But since the sons are basically frat boys who grew beards to make themselves look the stereotype of swamp hillbillies, they would probably run home crying after two days in Iraq.

    • JustChristy says:

      TAKE MY MONEY…ALL OF IT!

  2. grabbyhands says:

I know it is because of money, but it makes me rage that A&E continues to broadcast this show and then cancelled Longmire.

    • Size Does Matter says:

I love Longmire. Please, somebody, pick it up!

    • starrywonder says:

I know! I was so mad when I heard it got cancelled. A&E never even promoted the dang show. If not for my DVR I would not have known it was even on.

    • homegrrrl says:

It’s reality shows that make me want to cancel cable…but then the Liberace movie was on HBO, and then there’s the Olympics. Otherwise, cable is offensive, and I’m upset with myself because I pay for the machine. Can’t I just buy ESPN and watch it on the computer? Is there life after cable? Seriously, I haven’t watched anything but fashion police and the olympics in the past few years. Could someone send some options?

  3. Macey says:

Im sorry but these people make my head hurt, especially when they say stuff like this…

“They’re mad at me, but I’m really just quoting what God said, so He’s the one they have a problem with.”

sorry but no, “god” (or whatever you want to call it) did not say or write this, it was written by man, just like all the other scriptures. How can anyone with half a brain take anything these people say seriously?

    • Bridget says:

That’s what makes me the worst Catholic. I realize that the Bible is supposed to be ‘divinely inspired’ but all I can think about is how the men that wrote it were all humans and a product of their times. Especially as a woman, I can’t just take all context out of the Old Testament.

      • mimif says:

Actually, I think that makes you the best kind of Catholic. No matter one’s belief system, we all benefit from reflection and self-awareness.
I’m thinking this dude has none of that going on.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I loved your little exchange, Bridget and mimif. Good points!

    • Jana says:

      Spot on Macey!

    • I Choose Me says:

      Nail meet head!

  4. Allie says:

So he compares homosexuality to beastiality but then later says we wouldn’t have a gun problem or an anger problem if we would all just love each other. Right. I think you have a few screws loose there, Phil.

    • Suzy from Ontario says:

Yeah and I’m sure he’d happily invite a black man to have dinner with him. Pleeeeze!

Kaiser, you are absolutely right. There is a percentage of the population who think just like he does and they have convinced themselves they are not bigots or racists or homophobes, they are simply Christian going by the word of God and just trying to help people go to heaven. They aren’t hating, they are helping!

A big part of this problem is that too many religions tell their followers to get out there and convert, spread the word of God…including telling people that they believe the Bible/God says that they are evil. They tell themselves that *they* aren’t saying it, they are just passing along God’s word. God said it. Well, the Bible was written by men. It is not God’s word (if there is a God, and I’m an aethiest so…), and if it was then why did they pick and choose which books of the Bible to include and discard others? Wouldn’t they all be sacred words of God? Apparently there are tons of books that weren’t included. They put in what they wanted and called it the word of God and people believe it. Just like people who say God told me or God spoke to me. Really? You and God had a conversation and He told you to be intolerant and hateful and stick your nose in everyone else’s business?

I wish people would see that your beliefs don’t make you a good person, your behaviour does. Kindness and thoughtfulness and caring about others…that is my religion. If others are kind and caring people, then what they do in their bedroom is no concern of mine (as long as it is not with a child or forced on someone).

  5. QQ says:

I cant with this.. no srly I smooth cant comment without sounding exactly like him (Hateful, ignorant)… So I wont

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Smart. We need to stop elevating the opinions of these hateful people. The best way to invalidate everything they say is to just ignore.

      • mimif says:

This. If the bf tells me one more time what Sarah P-word said I’m going to turn him into buttermilk balls, and then you can make pie* with it!

*just threw up a little. Sorry.

      • blue marie says:

That made me throw up a little mimi, gross.. you could make it with a cornbread crust.

      • Tiffany :) says:

mimif, my bf does something similar! He is always “hate watching” Fox, and then he gets outraged by the stupid things they say. I’m like…but you are watching Fox News! Did you expect to hear factual and insightful news programing?

      • Bridget says:

That’s the ultimate goal of a Sara P, an Ann Coulter, a Rush L. They want to be repeated and talked about and to make waves, no matter how ridiculous they sound to anyone with an ounce of common sense. So I simply ignore them. Their hate and vitriol simply blows right past me, because I know that being ignored is the one thing that they fear the most.

  6. Jess says:

God, or a bunch of random men who made shit up? I can’t get started on this dude, I’ll never stop. I’m in the south and my Facebook feed is full of people screaming “Phil for president”, uuuugggghhhh.

  7. HH says:

I adore my grandmother and I love my parents, aunts, and uncles beyond measure, but outside of my family…. and I’m sorry (kind of) to say this, but I’m just ready for certain generations to wither away.

    • Really? says:

Seriously? You love your family but can’t wait for them to “wither away” because they don’t have the same beliefs as you? That is all kinds of wrong.

      • Kiddo says:

I took it that HH didn’t want to lose family members, but the mindset and prejudice that s/he feels is linked by generation. I’m not saying I agree because I have older family members who do not subscribe to hatred, but I still think you didn’t get the comment within the proper intent.

      • HH says:

        @Kiddo – Thanks for understanding.

@Really? – Hence the part which stated “outside of my family”. It’s not simply having the same beliefs as me, but the sheer hatred and ignorance that spews out of some of the older generations mouths is downright ridiculous. But their feelings are so strong because they come from a certain time.

    • Syko says:

You know, not everyone over the age of 50 is a racist homophobic misogynist. Most of us are actually decent people. So let’s back off on the generalizations, okay?

      • HH says:

@Syko – Of course not ALL of you, however, there is no denying that age is strongly linked between racism, homophobia, and misogyny. There’s a certain mentality among older generations *overall*,that has to specifically deal with the age in which they grew up.

I don’t particularly feel proud of my sentiments, but it’s coming from a state of sheer exhaustion and frustration.

      • Syko says:

Actually I can deny this, and I do. People grow and develop all their lives. We may have grown up in an age when schools were segregated and “queers” were something to snicker about, but most of us grew with the times, and are among the strong supporters of equal rights for everyone. With your generalization about people over a certain age, you are being very prejudicial yourself.

      • HH says:

“most of us grew with the times, and are among the strong supporters of equal rights for everyone.”

That’s not what I’m seeing or hearing. I know a large amount of those in the older generations who wholly support equal rights for all. However, I’ve encountered far more that don’t; or, commonly, they like to believe they do, but only from further conversation I’ve realized that they really don’t truly believe those sentiments. Enough comments “slipped” here and there, to let me know that they were saying was “supposed” to be right, but there was a disconnect with their true feelings.

    • jc126 says:

I think I get the sentiment in which you said this, but there are LOTS of members of the younger generations who are just as hateful and closed-minded as SOME older people. And they’re multiplying – see the Quiver Full types.

      • HH says:

@jc126 – I agree with that as well. Although, I think the biggest problem tackling younger generations is knowing how to deal with racism. There was a great article about millenials and racism. I think younger people just want to ignore race all together when that’s not only impossible, but won’t help the situation. We have to acknowledge racism and injustices in order to work through them.

  8. Talie says:

He was on Sean Hannity last night as a commentator on ISIS. Lawd…

    • Sam says:

I actually saw that (my husband watches Hannity solely for research, since he is a political aide). He basically kept talking about how ISIS “needs Jesus.” Don’t bother mentioning that ISIS members are Muslims and Islam generally already teaches about Jesus (or Isa, as they call him) and that most Muslims actually do show great respect towards Jesus (but as a prophet, not as Messiah). Clearly, he thinks Muslims are still in the Stone Age. There are many, many problems with the Middle East right now, but suggesting that Muslims “know Jesus” betrays so much of his ignorance it’s actually sad. I felt myself getting embarassed for him.

  9. Honeybea says:

People need to stop using God as an excuse for their hateful words and actions!

  10. aims says:

People make offensive comments all the time, then hide behind whatever religion they’re in. The fact of the mater is this; it’s wrong to say anything that is hateful and harmful to anyone. I think their whole thing is, they’re just a bunch of country folk that aren’t into “wordly” things. Which is funny because the granddaughter is going to be on Dancing with the stars. There are bigots in every part of the country not just the south.

  11. Sam says:

Okay, lemme put this out there, since I feel like I have duty as a Christian to say it:

Phil, stop holding yourself out as the arbiter of what Christianity is. The words you quoted? They ain’t God’s – they’re St. Paul’s. And lots of theologians don’t even agree with you. We’re not even sure Paul WAS talking about gay people in that passage (many believe he was discussing pedophiles). Not all Christians believe that the entire Bible is the literal inspired Word of God. The word of God in the Bible doesn’t come from Paul, it came from Jesus. You know, Phil? Jesus – who we actually believe to be the Divine manifestation of God on Earth – Jesus, who never actually said a damn word against gay people and who stood up for prostitutes, Romans, tax collectors, etc.? You know, the guy who attacked hypocrites and said “it is easier for a camel to thread the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into Heaven” (you seem have missed that part, Phil). Or that whole part about Jesus condemning adultery and stepping out on your wife (which I seem to recall you admitting to, Phil).

Phil to me represents the worst parts of Christianity. He represents a person who probably just doesn’t like gay people and found a religious viewpoint to justify it.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank you for saying so well what I wanted to say. And I couldn’t agree more with your statement that hateful people can often find Biblical passages that are vague enough to seem to support anything they want to hate. It’s frustrating that these people have become so vocal, and have used beautiful words of love and forgiveness to justify their own judgmental, hateful hearts.

    • Suzy from Ontario says:

Sam, good post!! You are so right!

  12. joy says:

It’s hard for me to reconcile all my feelings on this. Because my dad is very similar to this man. He was poor white trash picking cotton too, and a lot of his views are very similar. Actually minus all the love talk. My dad thinks the we should all love one another stuff is hippie nonsense lol! So I see where he is coming from, though I don’t necessarily agree with all of it. I don’t think he’s a bad person per se. I’m sure he would think I’m a vile harlot but whatever. At the end of the day, this man has more $ than all of us commenters combined, so even if he turned to Nazism, he’s still a gazillionare and I’m still poor white trash.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You are not trash. You are a worthwhile human being and God loves you. You have compassion for your father, but insight enough to see that his views need adjusting. You’re a thoughtful, intelligent person. Please don’t call yourself that. It hurts me.

      • Kiddo says:

I’m more offended by the opinion that because the man has money that he is seen as a more valuable human being.

      • joy says:

You’re very sweet and I appreciate that. I’m not saying he has money means he’s somehow more worthwhile, but at the end of the day whilst we are on here commenting about his narrow mindedness, he’s laughing all the way to the bank.

  13. ReturnoftheMac says:

See this makes me furious!!! I am from the south born and raised, multi generational southerner and when this ass hat makes inane and ignorant statements it makes us ALL look bad. I can tell you that me, my family, and my friends are some of the most open minded diverse people both ethnically and culturally.

    GRRRR STFU Phil!!

    • Hypocrites says:

Open minded!?!? Lol yeah right everyone here is about as open minded as a can of sardines. Open minded lol people here are good at narcissism and self delusion….

  14. Merritt says:

He is awful and I detest A&E for caving and putting the show back on the air.

    • Kiddo says:

A&E made its own bed and now it has to sleep in it. A&E is dead to me, I never even pause on that channel, I have it programmed out. They went with a crapfest, and now they are the crapfest channel. They will probably only see revenue through more of the same since they lost any intelligent viewership. I have come not to expect anything good there and I bet a lot of people have abandoned them for the same reason. They picked their viewing demographic, so be it.

    • Alicia says:

Well the ratings for Duck Dynasty last season went down considerably. They were drawing 12-14 million the previous season, now they are down to about 5-6 million. That’s a huge drop. A lot of people abandoned the show once Phil’s views came out lat last year. The last two Duck Dynasty books didn’t even crack the NYT Top 10 where before they all were making it on there.

So there is hope that – hopefully – they will be out of our sight soon.

  15. Abbicci says:

The interview and controversy were perfectly timed to coincide with the Christmas shopping season. Like minded morons all went to Wal-mart and purchased duck dynasty merchandise to show their support.Rich people got richer and poor people spent money they didn’t have on crap they didn’t need.

  16. buzz says:

Perverting the Bible into an instrument of hatred is one of the worst sins of all.

  17. chaine says:

if only we would stop giving these people publicity…

  18. SnarkGirl says:

Poor white boy my ass. He and his clan were wealthy, clean-cut preppy white boys long before they changed their image to rough-around-the-edges god, guns & Bible types. Makes me wonder how much of his talk is like his long hair & beard – clever marketing designed to keep the homophobic, racist bigots of the world throwing money at them.

    • Kiddo says:

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. Mother Night — Kurt Vonnegut

  19. Norman says:

Phil can talk about himself being a victim of political correctness all he wants but it does not change the facts about the statements that he made. Christian persecution brother is what is happening to people under the domain of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the roving bands of thugs in Nigeria and the regime in North Korea, it is not the act of people who voice support of gay marriage, the ones who challenge abstinence-only sex ed or creationism in public schools or those who challenge his specific viewpoints. As I recall from history there was also another old guy, thick beard, thick mustache, very dark brown eyes, white beard, fundamental is his religious views and had a disdain for the views of modern society his name was Ayatollah Khomeini.

  20. Hypocrites says:

Snarkgirl you’re a coward so I’m not surprised everyone one of the obnoxiously pseudo intellectual’s here engage in phony outrage. But then again everyone here is about as tolerant as ISIS and use sophistication instead of actually tolerance to demean people like Phil. Who unlike the shall we say cowardly posters and commenters here yes you are cowards, bigots, sexists, hypocritical blowhards looking for relevance in the great unknown of cyber space truth be told why should Phil care about a bunch of lowly, petty, hypocritical, bigoted, phony cowards?? Of course this site does seem to attract Elitists….like the pompous scum above….

    • GByeGirl says:

      um…what???

      • Kiddo says:

I think it means this: Hypocrites is BRAVE and relevant, telling everyone what’s what, you know, on the “great unknown of cyber space”, sounding off on an opinion, under an anonymous name, but BRAVER, as a defender of Phil, not actually defending Phil, but through name calling and judgement, s/he stands against name calling and judgement or something or other.

    • JustChristy says:

So what you’re saying is, you’re a fan?
