Ricky Gervais: ‘I’m fat because I eat too much’

wenn2295256
Ricky Gervais thinks he’s fat. And he thinks it’s all his own fault. Ricky says, in his own no-nonsense way, that he’s “fat” because he eats too much and he’d rather not give it up. I find both the premise and the explanation debatable. Ricky’s not fat, he’s just got more to love! And scientists are finding out more and more that body weight has a lot to do with genetics.

Ricky Gervais has accepted that he’ll never have a toned body. The comedian enjoys stuffing himself.

‘I’m fat because I eat too much and I’d rather not give up food,’ he says. ‘It’s not glandular, it’s greed.’

Ricky, 47, has had a gym installed at his New York apartment and he reckons it’s helped stop him from growing any bigger.

‘If I didn’t work out I’d still eat as much but instead of being probably 20 pounds overweight, I would be 40 pounds overweight,’ he tells The Observer Food Monthly.

‘I don’t think a comedian should be worried about their weight.’

From Now Magazine

First, I love that Ricky Gervais gave an interview to a food magazine. That alone is something to be appreciated. Second, Ricky’s right: comedians shouldn’t be worried about their weight. There is a grand tradition of overweight comedians, from John Belushi to Chris Farley to Jackie Gleason (who wasn’t really a comedian, he always wanted to be a dramatic actor). Ricky is fine the way he is, and if some manorexic Hollywood producer tells him to lose weight, that guy will have to answer to me.

Furthermore, lots of women love a man who’s a little bit bigger – I’m one of them. I like to eat, and I appreciate that quality in men. Too many guys think that the key to getting women is washboard abs, when it’s so not the case.

Some of his funniest stand-up is about obesity and much of it is directed at himself.

A lot of us are like that. We’re overweight but exercise. If we didn’t exercise we’d be even bigger. He looks healthy and it’s obviously working for him. The key also is portion control and better food choices…if it were only that easy to do.

Ricky has to have the sexiest eyes in the biz.

  4. NotBlonde says:

It’s nice that he isn’t trying to tell people that it’s ok that he’s not a size zero (as though thin people are only size zeros). It’s nice that he just says he’s fat, like so many other people, because he eats too much and likes food so screw ’em.

Personally, I can’t stand chubbiness on guys. I tried it once with a chubby guy and cuddling with him felt like cuddling a warm bag full of pudding. *shudder* I like my men firm, with broad shoulders and tight abs. But that’s just my personal opinion, of course.

I don’t think he is that fat he just has that weird chin fat his legs are skinny and his belly is only slightly rounded. I did see his stand up on HBO and the fat stuff was really funny!

  6. Aspen says:

He’s absolutely adorable! I’ve always found him very pleasant to look at, and I think cut, skinny men are plastic looking and a turnoff after a point.

I’m sorry he feels fat. He certainly doesn’t look fat to me. He has that adorable baby face and that soft little Buddha belly. Oh! I’d so hit it.

Love the honesty. Can’t stand it when celebs say they are overweight because of their glands, or they are thin without doing any exercise yet have super toned bodies!

If you want to see a younger and slimmer Ricky, type “Seona Dancing” into google.

Ditto, NotBlonde. I know what you’re saying about the bag full of pudding. It’s pretty much the least sexy thing in the world for me.

Oddly enough, Ricky was hot and fit back in the day. Here’s a video of his band – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G9uGPQsVNk

Okay Ricky we get it, you’re a fat bastard and you’re happy.

The tradition of fat comics feeds the stereotype that fat people are happy people. There’s also a tradition of fat comics drinking, drugging or dying before their time… not such a funny stereotype.

You are not really looking fat to be honest. Don’t make something a problem which isn’t one!
