Norman Reedus on the zombie apocalypse: ‘it’s like Ebola, it makes you value’ life

The print edition of US Weekly has new interviews with Walking Dead hotties Norman Reedus, Andrew Lincoln and Steven Yeun. (I’m sorry for just getting to it now. Our digital subscription has not been coming on time.) As we’ve seen, Reedus gives the best interviews. He has some funny anecdotes and a colorful way of speaking. Despite his rugged appeal he’s somewhat sketchy to me as a person, as he’s a 45 year-old man with a 21 year-old girlfriend. US Weekly confirms that Reedus is dating model Cecilia Singley. They’ve been together nearly a year and she was just 20 when they met.

The majority of the interviews focus on the show of course, and I’ll refrain from geeking out and getting into the details. If you’re into WD like me, you can pick up US Weekly. (The one with Kim K and North on the cover.) I’ve read the comics, and I have a good idea where the show is going given the latest plotlines. I won’t give any spoilers today though.

Here are some excerpts from US’ interview with Reedus.

How has this huge success changed your life?
I don’t go to the grocery store so much anymore, you know what I mean? I spend most of the year in Georgia out in the woods, so I don’t see people, but then we do something like Comic Con and it’s insane. A lot of people go, “Isn’t it hard shooting because you don’t take a bath for weeks?” And I’m like, “I shower every day! That’s strategically placed makeup. It’s not real dirt, just to let you know.”

But you do get down and dirty on set. Do you do your own stunts?
As many as I can. I had to deck a huge guy recently, and they swapped out the actor with a stunt double who was, like, made of rock. I’m looking at him going, “This is going to hurt.” And it did. I woke up with whiplash the next morning. Last season I had stitches on my forehead. This season I had stitches on my forearm. I’ve had four black eyes, a dislocated shoulder. We all get beat up, but you go home and it seems like a good day’s work.

Who do you pal around with on set?
Andrew Lincoln is definitely my BFF. We’ll be doing serious scenes, and I’ll lean over and go, “Love you,” under my breath. And he’ll lean over and go, “F-k you.” During one scene last year when he crawled out of the window, I was at the bottom with my pants down, mooning him.

Do you guys ever trade ideas on what started the zombie apocalypse?
We all have theories: It’s man-made, or it’s Mother Nature. It’s like Ebola – it makes you value the time and people you have left.

[From US Magazine, print edition, October 27, 2014]

Andrew Lincoln talked about his character, Rick, and about how good the special effects team is and how they can still creep out the actors. He said that “if the effects team sees us look revolted and grimace, they’ve done their job properly.” Steven Yeun claimed that he enjoys scaring his on-screen wife, Lauren Cohan (Maggie) on set. “Just last night, I hopped out of the dark, scared the crap out of her and ran away. Then, 20 feet later, I hid behind a car and scared her again. I get so much joy watching people squirm!” I’m sorry, but I hate when people do that. It’s so mean.

As for Reedus’ quotes on Ebola, I don’t think he’s comparing Ebola to the zombie apocalypse like, clinically. I think he’s saying that public health epidemics can make you realize how precious life is and how quickly you can lose friends and family. I also like how Reedus described his friendship with Lincoln. They remind me a little of Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard on True Blood. Hot bros.

Here are the guys at Paleyfest on October 11. I prefer my Andrew Lincoln with scruff. Also, this story needs more Chad Coleman.

I watched TEN MINUTES of the latest episode last night – without contacts in or glasses on – and what happens? Immediate nightmares. Ended up getting chased around by zombies, and the dog ended up being a traitor and giving up our position- barked nonstop and kept trying to play with the zombies. I tossed her out of our safe place, and immediately woke up feeling like shit for essentially throwing the dog into the wild, to her likely death, all over her traitorous ways.

I genuinely can’t watch any more zombie shit. I’ve cut myself off. Husband can watch alone.

  2. Elizabeth says:

Oh no….I never watch an episode without wishing they would run into some serious amounts of soap and water. I much prefer a clean Rick.

  3. Olenna says:

He’s another one those celebrities (like Kit Harrington) that I could careless what he thinks, but he is weirdly hot.

  4. whocares says:

I’ve no respect for any man who dates someone less than half his age! Its disgusting! It simply means he’s going through a mid-life crisis and he’s unable to keep up with a woman his own age! Model my ass; he probably has to financially support her like a parent when her parents aren’t financially supporting her. Dumb ass!

    • epiphany says:

Yeah, it kind of ruins my genuine affection for him that he’s dating someone closer to his son’s age than his own. By all accounts, Reedus is a nice guy – fans always comment how kind and accessible he is at conventions, etc… but I just don’t get what he finds so enticing about dating a quasi-child. I would think dating someone half his age would make him feel older, not younger. And doesn’t he realize if he wasn’t famous now, she wouldn’t look twice at him? Doesn’t he care that he’s being used? I Googled photos of this girl – apparently, she is a working model, although I’ve never heard of her. She’s pretty, but not gorgeous – there are women twice her age who are ten times as beautiful – and undoubtedly, much more interesting.
You’re too old to date girls, Norman, find yourself a woman! Daryl Dixon would never do what you’re doing! (lol)

    • Madly says:

There are rumors she was actually a teen when they got together and she is pregnant. No idea if it is true.

    • Pandy says:

I know. Love his character and he seems like a good guy, but I just can’t move past what is likely some form of stunted emotional growth that you can’t be with someone in your age range – rather than someone barely out of high school. Guess I won’t date him after all. His loss as I rock!

    • Green Eyes says:

Yeah, I have to say that the situation with the much-younger girlfriend turned me off of Norman Reedus – and I really had quite the crush on him. I still love the show, but I never read up on NR anymore like I used to.

So are they still together? I think the pregnancy rumor has been going on for a while now – at least since it became known that they were together. I think it’s because she’s a more curvy “model”, rather than a typical thin, emaciated model.

    • Macey says:

His last gf was in her early 20s too. Forget her name but I think they were together for the 1st cpl yrs he was on WD. She was also another ‘model’ but I dont think she ever worked as one professionally, just another one that takes tons of selfies and posts them online and calls themselves a model.

I used to think he was hot but his overstyled hair has really been turning me off lately, especially when you can tell it was hot ironed on the WD. I think he has the most over styled hair on that show, including the women.

  5. mom2two says:

That’s the best I’ve seen Andrew Lincoln look in a while. I would totally hit Norman, Andrew (looking like he does in those photos) and Steven Yeun. I do agree that I don’t think Norman was trying to compare a zombie invasion to ebola, just that those events make you appreciate life more, knowing how things could turn on a dime.

  6. AmyLynne says:

I love that you geek out over this show. I do too- a ridiculous amount! I think they are all hot, Daryl is super hot in the show but not in real life. Michonne is the best though. I wish I was her.

  7. shizwhat says:

Am I the only one who finds Norman Reedus unattractive? He’s doing the washed up rocker look and it’s just gross. He doesnt wear his hair, his hair wears him and he’s too old for it. I guess it might have to do with the show but yeeeesh. Also, a 20 year old girlfriend? There’s been worse but again… yuck.

    • Green Eyes says:

I think real-life pics of him look awful – he supposedly drinks a lot. He looks much better on the show – probably cuts down on the booze while filming.

    • Godwina says:

“He doesn’t wear his hair, his hair wears him”

      Spot on!

  8. claire says:

They’re all so handsome, but Steven’s my boo!

  9. Karen says:

I just can’t with that hair.

  10. kibbles says:

I find Andrew Lincoln to be very sexy and he gets better with age. I also like Steven Yeun. Norman Reedus is not attractive at all but I can understand his appeal.

    • epiphany says:

It’s not the actor, it’s his character, Daryl – strong, resourceful, loyal, sweet and badass – an intoxicating combo during a zombie apocalypse!

      • Godwina says:

Agreed. The Daryl character grew on me, despite the way he b-worded some of the women in early seasons. Still prefer Glenn all the livelong way.

  11. d says:

I get what he’s saying, so am not offended. It’s a decent interview. But geez, that hair. It’s wearing thin for me…I can handle it in Daryl Dixon, but in real life, ug. I hope Chad Coleman/Tyreese sticks around; I find him to be a calming force/presence in the group. Like, he’s quiet, but you know he’ll get things done and you can rely on him. And he’s good with babies! And GORGEOUS. There is so much man candy on that show; actually alot of really good characters, like Carol. Steven’s good too. It’s interesting; I guess Lincoln and Reedus are supposed to be the leads(?), but the other actors/characters really make the show too; it would be dull without them. I *want* to see how Glenn’s doing and how he contributes to the group’s survival. I’m emotionally invested in he and Maggie’s relationship! I’m invested in Carol.

    • Godwina says:

Agreed–he’s horribly styled. They could have done better things with his “must keep it long for the show” hair.

  12. Godwina says:

I enjoy NR’s amazing guns but that’s about it. My WD eye candy is SY all the way.
