I’m not trying to sound mean, but I’m actually surprised that this breakup didn’t happen sooner. Dev Patel and Freida Pinto got together while filming/promoting Slumdog Millionaire back in 2008. Freida was in another relationship at the time, and I’ve always believed there was some overlap between the first guy and Dev. But whatever happened, Dev was the one to “stick” and they ended up having a six-year relationship. And it’s now over! Sad face.
Fans are not going to like this one. Slumdog Millionaire costars Freida Pinto and Dev Patel have called it quits on their relationship, multiple sources confirm exclusively to Us Weekly. The now-exes, who met on set of the Oscar-winning movie in 2008, were together for almost six years.
“Dev and Freida have broken up,” one source tells Us of the couple. “They have been done for a while.”
Pinto, who is six years older than Patel, recently celebrated her 30th birthday without the actor this past October. The Immortals actress instead rang in her milestone birthday with billionaire Siddharth Mallya.
“Freida is single and happy,” another source tells Us of the newly available star. “Friends are setting her up.”
During happier times, the two considered themselves “soul mates” — in Patel’s case, even before they were dating. “We’re soul mates because we’re both in this surreal situation. She is very beautiful… I haven’t got a girlfriend but Freida, my costar, is gorgeous,” the Newsroom star, 24, told Contact Music in 2008. Years later, during a chat with Interview mag, Pinto agreed: “I guess he was right in a way; we are soul mates.”
The couple were so in love, in fact, that last year, they told Us Weekly they don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because “every day should be a celebration of love.”
Prior to dating Patel, Pinto was engaged to her former publicist Rohan Antao until January 2009.
That was an interesting little detail thrown in there, right? Freida “rang in her milestone birthday with billionaire Siddharth Mallya.” When I heard “billionaire” with an Indian name, it made me think that the guy was old and that Freida was pulling a Miranda Kerr. But check out Siddharth Mallya. WHOA. I’d tap that. He’s young, he’s handsome and he has major family money. Yes, I think Freida and Dev have probably been done for months now and she’s already pursuing/being pursued by Mallya. Damn, girl.

I love how the article has to make the age difference explicit, as if we couldn’t work it out for ourselves.
If the genders were reversed, nobody would be drawing attention to a 6 year age difference. In fact, they might even praise the man for choosing an ‘age appropriate’ girlfriend.
It’s cultural thing, women/wives are almost always expected to be younger than men/husbands.
I married a man 10 years my junior and it was considered SCANDALOUS in my work place. Everybody assumed – and some even told me to my face – that he was “in it” for my money (WHAT money?) and I was “in it” for sex. Nobody would have said a damn thing if HE had been the older one…No one would have blinked an eye. I live/work int he American South; I’m surrounded by Fundamentalists. They couldn’t get over it and still can’t.
I don’t find the age difference notable except for the fact that they started dating when he was just 18. 6 years is a long time in that case (and would be if the genders were reversed, too)

I honestly think she’s one of the most beautiful actresses out there and I too like both of them.
Do not understand it at all. And I am of Indian descent, have seen more than enough Bollywood actresses, even South Indian ones, know she really is stunning.
I’m Indian and I think she’s gorgeous. But for a lot of Indians their version of a movie star is not the beautiful girl next door. It’s the typical oomphy girls like Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu, Chitrangadha Singh, Shilpa Shetty, Ileana D’cuz, Esha Gupta, Lisa Haydon and Lara Dutta. I haven’t mentioned actors with really fair skin as I didn’t want another ‘Indians hate Freida as she isn’t light skinned’ debate. They like plenty of non’fair girls who are considered gorgeous and are super successful in India. Freida for some reason isn’t liked here as much as the others as I think she’s not overtly sexy like most Indian leading ladies.

Yes, she must be pure, good cook, able to enjoy being her husband’s slave. She must obey her husband and do as he says. She is not allowed to gain any weight, must look beautiful at all times, and most importantly have fair skin. Typical requirements of most males from India (they can dream on, this ain’t happening).
I haven’t really seen Freida in anything substantive since her role in Slumdog Millionaire. As many others have said, I have never warmed up to her. She just seems like a pretty face who is lucky enough to still get invited to the red carpet and be featured in magazines because she is pretty. Dev is a much better actor and he’s done a good job on The Newsroom. I think Dev will still be around in Hollywood and Freida will likely end up marrying a very rich man and still show up to events looking pretty.
Sid Mallya is not going to be one of those guys who marries the sweet lil’ Indian girl. Not every section of India is like that. Guys from smaller places are for sure. Also the guys who come to other countries for grad school especially for engineering most definitely are. These guys are conformists who have done what is expected by their family and society all their life. You know the Indian drill; undergrad in engineering in India, grad school in the US or Europe, get a 9 to 5 job, marry a demure girl of their parents choice , have kids in 2 years and so on. But a lot of Urban guys from the bigger cities aren’t like that anymore. They do whatever they want to do irrespective of what’s expected from society and even parents are a lot cooler nowadays.
Coming back to Mallya he’s a major major douche especially after he lost all the weight. He walks around with a chip on his shoulder and says the most obnoxious things for attention.
He gets with a chain of models who hook up with him mainly to be featured in his dad’s company’s Kingfisher calender. It’s quite a big deal for upcoming models.
He also dated Deepika Padukone who is one of the hottest and top actors in Bollywood right now. He tries to date girls who will give him plenty of paparazzi photo-ops. Deepika made him well’known in India and Freida will be someone who’ll give him visibility internationally.
He’s rich and lives a great lifestyle where all he does is party and constantly pouts and preens if there’s a camera around. I think Freida can do so much better. If this is true then it’s a step down for her. Like someone’s already mentioned, he’s India’s version of Paris Hilton. Rich trash!
