Sienna Miller: My ‘strong & pure intentions’ were ‘swallowed’ by the tabloids

Sienna Miller

Here are some photos of Sienna Miller out in NYC a few days ago to promote American Sniper. Her outfit is Altuzarra (a bodysuit fashioned as a crisp blouse and a wrap skirt) and looks timeless. Sienna’s been hustling hard for this project. I admire her gusto as a supporting player. She’s simply thrilled to be working in movies that people want to watch. In a new interview with Variety, Sienna talks about how motherhood made her realize that she doesn’t always need to be the center of attention. This is part of her relatable motherly persona, and I think it’s working some slow magic. She’s had media training — which is smart — so as not to disrupt her slew of upcoming roles (including Ben Affleck’s Life by Night) by saying something rude or vacant. She almost succeeds here:

Clint Eastwood’s directing style: “He does it his own way. But for me, I found him to be really attentive. I felt very directed throughout this whole film. He’s literally sitting by the camera and he’s looking at you, and he doesn’t take his eye off you. I remember before an emotional scene, he came up and put his hand on my back and he just whispered in my ear the death toll in Iraq on the day we’re shooting. It was an amazing piece of direction, because it grounds you.”

Motherhood changed her: “I feel like my life is in two chapters. There’s the pre-baby and post-baby. I love my job so much, but I didn’t think very laterally about the implications of working with filmmakers. After having my daughter and re-evaluating my priorities, I realized I really want to work with amazing filmmakers and had a strong sense of the films I want to watch and try to be in. And also, letting go of any attachment to the size of the role. I genuinely don’t need to be the lead. I don’t need to carry something.”

On her needed hiatus: “Yes, I did. I’d been, not by choice, dissected by the media and exposed and all the things that really make it hard to be a good actor, or to be seen as characters, to disappear into something. And I always had strong and pure intentions. But it was just being swallowed up by this tabloid animal.”

There are different standards for men & women in Hollywood … “And in the whole world.”

On the pressures against 20-something actresses: “It’s completely sexist. It’s completely imbalanced. It’s insane. I had an experience with the New York Times, where my ex-boyfriend Jude was doing a play on Broadway. They did a profile on him, and during the article referred to the fact that he had a relationship with me. The following week, the same newspaper did an article on me and referred to Jude as ‘a fling.’ As if I was promiscuous, and all the connotations that come with that word. That’s sexism in the upper echelon of journalism. Don’t get me started. Even Channing [Tatum] says with his past of being a dancer, if that was a woman, it would be really hard to come back from that. Dancer? I mean, stripper!”

Her Cabaret role: “It’s Birdman‘s fault. I’ve got the sudden urge to be back in the theater.”

On G.I. Joe: “Ergh! It was an odd movie for me to be in.”

[From Variety]

Hmm. I do buy that Sienna is a changed person. She’s less selfish and less of a train wreck than she once was. She makes some strong points about how women are treated differently than men, not only in Hollywood but “in the whole world.” Yep.

Anyway. Sienna’s tabloid run was brutal. Jude Law was (is?) a scoundrel when it came to romance, but Sienna was viewed as the promiscuous one. Jude cheated on her (with the nanny), and everyone knew it, but Sienna was treated like she did something wrong. Of course … she cheated on Jude too (with Daniel Craig!), but we only found out about that last year. Even in hindsight, she was treated worse than Jude by the media. Even with the whole Balthazar Getty mess, Sienna received the brunt of that scandal too.

But. For Sienna to declare, “I always had strong and pure intentions“? Guuurrrl.

I have always loved her, regardless of her personal life. Her performance in Factory Girl was completely overlooked. She really is a talented actress, and I feel her looks are almost a detriment to her.

    • Kelly says:

Celebrities misbehaving is hardly news. She is an entertainer, not a Sunday school teacher. Even so, I’ll buy that she has changed. Motherhood can do that. Also, she looks amazing here. I want whatever she is using on her hair.

    • Frida_K says:

      Me too.

I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and to me, she captured that fragile/hard combination that epitomized a certain type of girl from the rich side of town. She was a perfect Edie Sedgwick, I thought.

    • kennedy says:

I don’t think her looks are a detriment. There are plenty of beautiful actresses who go on to have successful, less-controversial careers. I don’t think Sienna was particularly focused on her career at the time. What matters is that she is now and she’s making some really solid choices.

I liked what she had to say in an interview about working with auteurs/great directors even if it was a bit part. She mentioned her role in Foxcatcher – which is VERY small (it might have been trimmed down even more in the final cut/cut out completely) – and how she wasn’t bothered by the size of it because it meant working with Bennett Miller. Working with Miller led to her working with Eastwood, Affleck, etc. Directors talk to one another and when they notice hard work they’re likely to recommend you to their pals. She’s smart and focused now, and I appreciate that about her. Plus, I have always thought she was talented.

I didn’t love American Sniper but I think she did a solid job. It’s a thankless role, and she made it somewhat interesting — or at least as much as the script allowed her to.

    • Sarah says:

I agree. I almost feel as if I have to apologize for liking her (married woman here, rooting for Sienna the home wrecker), and many of her tabloid problems are her own fault. Yes, there is a double-standard and yes, she bore the brunt of it. It was as if she lured poor, sweet, innocent Balthazar Getty – who was totally and completely faithful and in love with his wife – to his doom. Some kind of Delia to his Samson. Stupid nonsense. I’ve always enjoyed her acting and think she is just gorgeous. I can understand why a lot of men (and women) want to hit it.

      • Charlotte_ says:

Why do you call her homewrecker? Why is the single woman a homewrecker when its the married man? Do we know what he told her about his marriage? He pobably told her that they are over. You again call a woman the homewrecker. Guys are never the homewreckers only woman.

  2. Marie-France says:

I´m not going to see her movie and I´m quite indifferent to her acting skills. BUT, the hair!! I love it. It looks so nice on her that I m considering the same cut despite the fact that we look nothing (nothing) alike. Also very important: I would cheat on Jude Law with Daniel craig in a second. I would never cheat on Idris Elba though. Ever.

    • QQ says:

i’m pretty much cosigning everything you said THAT HAIR!! (and Also the Altuzarra Look!!! ..It was for the Daily Show last week and I actually loved it so much I took a Pic and sent it to my gfs like at 11 something at night LOL)

  3. Greek Chic says:

Love her style and her new hair. I’m tired of seing actresses and celebrities with heavy extensions.Nice change.

  4. Kiddo says:

“There’s the pre-baby and post-baby”, and then there’s the FAKE BABY.

    • Esmom says:

Ha, yes, I gathered as much from yesterday. She didn’t even mention the poor thing. No love for the fake baby, apparently.

      • LondonGal says:

        fake baby?

      • cr says:

        Fake baby!

If you haven’t seen it yet (or if you’re not going to see it), this clip from American Sniper doesn’t really spoil anything for you, but it does give you a really good look at the terrible fake baby that’s provoked nearly as much conversation as the movie itself.
        http://www.pajiba.com/videos/watch-bradley-cooper-soothe-the-fake-baby-in-american-sniper.php

      • Kiddo says:

cr, the FAKE BABY should win awards, do not refer to it as “terrible”, or your playpen privileges will be revoked.

      • cr says:

Those aren’t my words, those are from the link!

      • Kiddo says:

Okay, here’s a fake pacifier then.

      • PixieWitch says:

OMG, yes, that fake baby in American Sniper. ‘Ive seen better fake Zombie Babies. i really couldn’t believe it. I did not like this movie, i didn’t like her awful character. The horrible dialogue. Bradley Coopers acting, i don’t get it, i just don’t get it. Let me just say the movie should be renamed “The Iraq War for the Lifetime Channel”.

      • crab says:

@ cr, that’s pretty funny! I went to see the movie with my husband on Sunday afternoon and when that scene came up I whispered to my husband that the baby looked fake! It didn’t move at all, very stiff! Other than that I enjoyed the movie very much! I thought Sienna and Bradley Cooper were amazing!

      • mimif says:

FULL STOP. Fake Zombie Babies? Link immediately or there will be retribution.

ETA: You’re not talking about Judith, are you? Fake Baby Judith is in a league of her own. It’s what all Fake Babies should aspire to, really.

    • Lucy2 says:

I haven’t seen the movie some lovely soul posted a clip of that scene online. It is hilarious.

  5. Esmom says:

I’m liking her style game lately but I also think I liked it better when she was laying low and not talking much.

  6. sills says:

Love her style here, looks great. Props for getting out there and hustling. And really, you’ve got no choice but to put on your game face when people ask about the trashy aspects of your past–and some of her past was super-trashy. Going after married men is just gross, I know it takes two to tango, but seriously, just don’t.

  7. Loopy says:

She was actually really decent in the movie, because up until now I can’t remember if I have seen her in anything. Her accent was good, i finally watched Gone Girl this past weekend too and hearing the main actress talk reminded me of the Tina and Amy’s opening at the Globes about British actors doing American accents like news readers, I hope that Miss Pike was doing that accent maybe due to her ‘upbringing’ it was rather distracting.

    • lrm says:

Sienna was great in Alfie with Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, etc. And Cassanova with Heath Ledger, while not a great film-she was also great in that. I’m so glad to see others like her acting and like her. I also always have-always thought she was stunning, great style (could be iconic at some point) and a good actress. A few years ago, people on these gossip threads would compare her to kate bosworth-a fashion girl with nothing more. Didn’t make sense-she’s a good actress! (: She does inspire fascination, it seems, whether people love or hate her.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t know much about her, but I think she’s very pretty.

  9. Nya says:

Her strong intentions to…..bone a bunch of married/taken men?

  10. scout says:

Looks like she grew up and pretty well too. She is fabulous in American Sniper, good looking and great acting. Carry on Missy.

  11. danielle says:

“My intentions were strong and pure”?! Liked it better when she admitted her moral compass was lacking. Anyways, love her hair in these pics. Thinking of a cut now.

  12. Maria says:

Men, that tabloid animal was fostered by her behavior, tho I will concede how unfair it was her getting blamed…

She’s a good actress and the world has moved on from her wild days, she should too because the whoa is me routine is getting old.

  13. Jayna says:

I took it to mean she always had strong ad pure intentions towards her acting, not meaning for it to get overshadowed by her personal life.

  14. MrsBPitt says:

I saw the movie last Friday (reallly just went cause Hubs wanted to see it). I didn’t think it was that good at all. I expected to be moved by it, and I cry like a baby at anything. And I particularly did not like Sienna’s role in the movie…the whiny, nagging wife. I wish someone other than Clint Eastwood directed it. He’s made some good movies, but it’s time for him to retire. His last few movies feel like they are just plodding along…anyway, just my opinion!

  15. Dani2 says:

She looks great in all of these pictures. That’s all I’ve got. Oh and I still love her hair.

  16. Mollie says:

Clearly her fashion mojo is BACK solid.
She’ looks fantastic that hair, the styling, everything is working for her.

  17. snowflake says:

love the black and white outfit

  18. Talie says:

I love her, but she dug her own whole years ago with the whole flagrant affair with a married man thing. Can you believe Balthazar Getty’s wife is still with him?!!! She’s old school…

    • lrm says:

They perhaps have one of those ‘understandings’ that old money/family names have. Like the British Aristos. We don’t have as big or established an upper crust in the US as they do in England-but there is one. People say that about Goopy-she’s of the set that stays married in spite of affairs, b/c ‘that’s how it’s done’. It’s a lifestyle contract/obligation, a way of merging family dynasties and keeping perks within that circle-more than a marriage between two people in love.

    • mimi says:

The way Sienna flaunted her affair with Getty was unreal! While his wife was home heavily pregnant with their fourth child, Sienna was being papped topless on a boat getting her boobs groped by Getty in full view! There was no hiding that sordid affair. She gave zero f–ks about the wife, kids or what the public thought of her. With age and motherhood, I think Sienna has finally matured. I think she looks great and I’m happy her career is back on track.

  19. Jan Harf says:

Her style is on POINT! Perfect!

  20. Branvoyage says:

In the top pic she’s giving me 90s Sharon Stone vibes.

  21. Sadie says:

Wait – that rumor about Sienna Miller and Daniel Craig definitely didn’t come out only last year. I know they confirmed it then, but the rumor’s been around for like a decade, hasn’t it? I’m sure I remember it around the time I saw Layer Cake.

Anyway, I never was that into her as an actress, but it’s still great for her that she’s getting roles in interesting movies.

  22. kri says:

She has been GOOPified. But she looks good. It’s gotta be the shoes….

  23. daughterofjean says:

Love her style! She’s gorgeous and talented as well.

  24. anon says:

I am starting to liike her. I didn’t really like her when she was with Jude Law but she seems so much more grown up now and is actually her own person not just a pretty generic blond.

  25. mar says:

love her looks and style. I have always been on board

  26. Cindy says:

On Lainey Gossip, if you look up sienna miller and/or hayden christensen, there is a detailed history of the stuff that went on with sienna and hayden when they were making Factory Girl. Very juicy, and made me think Sienna is sort of nuts.

  27. Elly says:

Re: Balthazar Getty. IMO there is a reason why his wife is still with him and he had no problem showing his relationship with Sienna. They have an open relationship and people just don´t like that concept. Balthazar is his mother´s son, so i´m not surprised that he openly is in a relationship with one women while married to another.

I don´t know if people in the US know his mother Gisela and aunt Jutta? 68er movement in Germany. Art, sex, drugs, rock n roll, living in a commune (Kommune 1). The best known member was Uschi Obermaier. She was banging Hendrix, Jagger, Richards …

For years now Balthazar´s mom and aunt live in a “Harem” with old activist Rainer Langhans. But it´s not that he has 5 wives, no the 5 women have one man together and they can have as much relationships outside their “Harem aka social experiment community” as they want.

A few years ago they had a doku tv show in Germany showing how they live and love together. They are all about spirituality 😉
So why should Balthazar Getty live the “normal” civil life as husband and father?

  28. FLORC says:

I liked her sweater dress as a sweater. The stripped black and white looked like something horrid from the 90’s. It’s hard to believe this woman ever had style.

  29. annna says:

her role in American Sniper was a one dimensional nagging wife role. I’d prefer to get a meaty role with an unknown director than to have to play role like that all the time just so I could work with Clint Eastwood.
