Blake Lively’s director: she ‘is a statuesque timeless beauty a la Veronica Lake’

Here are some photos of Blake Lively at the afterparty for The Age of Adeline premiere. Yes, Blake changed out of her sad showgirl look for the afterparty. But I’m not sure that this full-length sheer-with-stars bodysuit was the correct “second look.” I mean… even Blake knows that she can’t really sell this. It’s a terrible styling choice and it doesn’t even look like it’s party-appropriate. Did she walk around the party wearing that big coat so she wouldn’t be flashing her bits and pieces? Oh, and this look is Monique Lhuillier, just like Blake’s red showgirl premiere look. Maybe THAT is the problem. No more Lhuillier for Blake.

Meanwhile, I have some bits and bobs of Blake info/quotes/interviews for you today. The Age of Adeline comes out on Friday, so Blake is going to be saturating the media this week. While at the premiere on Sunday, Blake tried to play it like her three-year absence from film was all her doing, because she’s so choosy. She told Variety: “I look for a movie that I can’t not do.” Variety notes that Blake was “in the running” for Silver Linings Playbook, the part that won Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar (LOL, never stop hustling, Blake). The director of Adeline, Toland Krieger, described Blake to Variety, saying: “She’s a bit of an old soul herself. She’d rather be baking on a Friday night than out partying. She’s a statuesque timeless beauty a la Veronica Lake.” A statuesque timeless beauty? Nope. Don’t get me wrong, I think Blake is pretty/sexy. Her prettiness is very accessible, like she’s “the pretty girl” in your college dorm.

What else? Blake has been talking about motherhood a lot and how much she loves everything about her baby. Of course. She told You Magazine:

“Being a parent is both exhausting and all-consuming but it is the greatest gift in the world. I never feel as though I am giving up anything being a young mother – there’s no sacrifice. I feel like I’ve won the lottery. The only thing I am giving up is sleep. Whenever I’m away from the baby, even for a few hours, I miss her. Not sleeping through the night is the one thing you dread leading up to giving birth. But the thing you’re not told is that you miss your baby, or at least I do. Even when I wake up in the middle of the night and I’m tired, I see her and feel glad. I’m already mourning her going off to college and getting married!”

[From You Magazine via The Hamilton Spectator]

Blake also told the magazine that they don’t have a nanny or night nurse, but her parents have been staying and “they do the job of 30 nannies, so we are very lucky.” Sure, I believe that. Much like Duchess Kate, I suspect Blake is very, very close to her family.

    A wooden statue maybe.

  2. MP says:

Sure but can she act? Why didn’t the director say anything about that? I guess she is only hired for parts where it’s enough to look pretty.

    • fritanga says:

I guess he was subscribing to idea that one should always say something nice, even if it’s reaching.

And she can’t act at all.

  3. HoustonGrl says:

Maybe it’s just the lighting, but she looks a little waxy in these pictures.

  4. Meatball says:

What is that outfit? It looks ridiculous and her implants look bad. Blake is really lucky she is pretty.

    • Jegede says:

My impression – from her GMA outfits, to the busyness of the red premiere dress, to this baggy black suit – is that her outfits seem to be designed/constructed to hide her post pregnancy figure.

I don’t think she has her body ‘back’ yet.

And these outfits are camouflaging stomach and hips.

Not shaming nor bashing just giving my 2 cents.

    • minx says:

She had implants, a nose job, dental work; these are standard in Hollywood. And, I’m, sorry, she still is just sort of average., IMO.She’s very well groomed, in shape; she definitely makes the most of what she has. But a timeless beauty, no way.
And I’m not even talking about her personality or acting ability.

      • Timbuktu says:

Agreed, I don’t get her hype at all. A very forgettable girl, IMO.

      • Boston Green Eyes says:

        +3000.

      • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

EXACTLY. Blake is a basic starlet, even with the plastic surgery and Hollywood makeover. She is also thirsty, and you can always count on her to repetitively display both her chest and legs (AKA “Boobs Legsly”) for attention.

The comparison to Veronica Lake is ludicrous. Veronica had that classic retro glamour, but she also had a personality and could act. The fawning director, Krieger, misapplied the meaning of statuesque. Blake is tall enough to fit that adjective, but Veronica was very petite. And while Veronica is still remembered and timeless can be applied to her, to call Blake a timeless beauty is eyeroll-inducing, because:

        1) she is an interchangeably pretty plastic surgery patient, hardly a beauty

        2) to truly be timeless is to be relevant (and inspire imitation) for many many decades

Blake hasn’t been around that long and she certainly hasn’t spawned a legion of copycats. I doubt she’ll be “iconic” 50 years from now.

        Puh-leeze.

      • laura in LA says:

Lake was only 5’1″, so not statuesque…

And IMHO, Lively is no “timeless beauty” and never will be.

  5. Josie says:

How much PS did Veronika Lake have? Because Blake NotLively had a nose job, boob job and god knows what else.

    • FingerBinger says:

Blake had her teeth fixed too.

    • TwoDegrees says:

She’s still stunning and was stunning and working before the nose job. So what.
Halle Berry has had nose and boob job, so what. So many actresses have had noses tweeked.

      • LaurenLauren says:

Agreed. I didn’t have straight teeth as a teen (so I got braces) and I definitely didn’t have a defined nose (which luckily got pointier with age), but I was still considered beautiful. Why? Because beauty is the whole of a person: body, hair, eyes, smile, skin, the way you carry yourself. On the other hand, I’ve seen many people with basic features – nothing too big or small but nothing pretty either, and they’ll never look beautiful. Beauty is MUCH more than 1+1=2.

      • fritanga says:

“Stunning” doesn’t make her talented or interesting, though. She has all the personality and animation of a store mannequin.

  6. Kiddo says:

    That outfit made me snort.

  7. Jay says:

Breast augmentation and nose job = statuesque timeless beauty? Please.

  8. paola says:

    my god that outfit.

  9. Allie says:

I absolutely hate when people describe others as an “old soul” because they’d rather enjoy a quite night in instead of going out to clubs. That doesn’t make someone an d soul or mature. Just different tastes. And defintely LOLing at the fact that Blake thinks we believe that she was in the running for Silver Linings Playbook. Sure, Blake.

  10. lolalulu says:

“I’m already mourning her going off to college and getting married” ??? New parenthood is amazing, but lets reel it in a little, Blake.

    • Dani says:

My daughter is 19 months and I’m always moopy about new things. I always whine to my husband about how I won’t be bale to keep it together when she leaves for college.

      • Justaposter says:

I know people always roll their eyes about that. Trust me, it really does go by in a flash! *said the mother who wonders where the time went because her second child who is about to graduate and head to college in the fall*

  11. Loopy says:

WOW beauty will take you very far for sure, she is such a horrible actress it hurts to watch her onscreen, but she is pretty and seems harmless so can’t knock her hustle.

    • Yeah says:

Yes, it hurts watching Blake. I watched Town last week and thought she was so annoying! Pursed lips and stupid accent doesn’t mean good acting. You could tell Jon Hamm just couldnt in the scenes with her.

  12. TeresaMaria says:

Little OT, but do check out Ryan Reynolds’ twitter account (@VancityReynolds) – the man is funny. The more I read his interviews (and his Twitter obviously!), the more he grows on me

    • Lee says:

Same! He seems funny and witty, with a dry humor, which I love…Blake, on the other hand, seems so vapid and so try hard.

      • jammypants says:

I always found his pairing with Blake weird. Scarlett I get, sort of. But Blake, not so much.

      • Lee says:

I think his best pairing was Alanis, just my opinion of course!

      • Asiyah says:

I take it that he might be one of those guys who can’t handle a woman as funny and witty as him? I could just be projecting based on my own observations about funny guys so take it with a giant grain of salt lol

    • Angie says:

YES! I totally agree with you about Ryan. I never found him physically attractive (too white bread vanilla) but his personality and humor more than make up for it.

  13. Anne says:

Oh dear, when people go overboard with the compliments, it just makes my eyes roll. I agree with CB, Blake’s pretty, but her pretty is “accessible.” She seems light, fun, pleasant and somehow far from interesting.

It really doesn’t serve these actors when directors shower them with effusive, exaggerated praise. It just lands flat, at least to me.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think she is a generally “pretty” person, but as far as great beauties go I don’t consider her one of them. Her figure is amazing, but I find her facial features to be very small with a square chin.

She might be a fun person to hang out with, but as far as “movie stars” go, I am not drawn in by her looks or talent.

  14. Barrett says:

She’s beautiful and what a figure, but sometimes I remember she had a nose job and I can’t not see it in her face! I also see with her height and her features when she is very show girl done up, I think she can give some trannies a run for their money. I am tall so I can make this comment!

  15. funcakes says:

Did she steal that from the costume department on”Showgirls”? Elizabeth Berkeley is going to need you to return that.

  16. RobN says:

“I never feel as though I’m giving up anything being a young mother.”

When did having a kid at 27 turn into being a “young” mother? She makes it sound like she’s some teen mom who missed her senior prom because her water broke.

    • Greek chic says:

At 27 you are a young mother.
Being a teen mom is completely different. A teen mom in not a young but a premature mom.

    • Samtha says:

Right? A young mother is 20 to 23, something like that.

    • LaurenLauren says:

In the Western educated world 27 IS a young mom. I am a 26 year old European and literally none of my friends have a baby. The only women I know who are my age and who have babies didn’t go to college or were/are kinda in a bad place.

  17. Twinkle says:

Her poses are so contrived as is her styling. I find she has no style because her dressing and poses are like the cut out dolls. As for her, I work in production, and she is notorious for being an entitled, spoiled brat on set. She thinks of nothing of wasting time and money by making the cast and crew wait for hours until she is ready to come out of her trailer. So, I personally don’t buy her Kool-aid.

    • Jegede says:

I’ve heard the exact opposite about her. A family friend and a part -film school cousin who both worked on GG Seasons 4 and 5, and had only the nicest things to say.
Ditto on the set of The Town in Boston.

But we all choose what to believe.

      • oneshot says:

I’ve read interviews from earlier seasons of Gossip Girl (notably the NYMag profile of the cast in Season 1) that all but say she was a diva on set, but I guess that was before she realised she had to clean up her act and hustle. Her pie-baking boob job image came at pretty much the same time as her first Vogue cover.

  18. lisa2 says:

I think Blake is pretty.. but she is not someone that people will be talking about YEARs from now. If Blake decided to get out of show business; I don’t see it making World news. If she doesn’t have something to promote no one talks about her. She is not Iconic in looks or personality. Nothing wrong with that. Only a few people in this world are.

  19. Alyce says:

I think she’s gorgeous! She’s my number one actress crush (#1 actor crush is Jason Momoa). Also, I know I’m in the minority, especially on this website, but I can’t wait to see the movie on Friday!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she’s really pretty, too. And love Jason to an embarrassing degree.

    • aang says:

I agree. I don’t think much of her acting but she is very beautiful and has a great body.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

I’m not a huge fan of Blake, but I don’t understand the hate she gets either. She seems pleasant enough and although not the best actress out there, I have seen much, much worse.

      • TwoDegrees says:

Blake is gorgeous , successful, young enjoying her life. More power to her.
What makes me laugh, is how some people immediately start attacking her looks, like it’s ok to attack her looks, but lord forbid if someone say Amal Clooney or Lena Dunham, etc may not be attractive, then the “why are you body shaming Police come out” , but the same people feel it’s perfectly ok to attack Blake, ScarJo, Charlize Theron, Amber Heards looks..and tell us how these women are supposedly physically unattractive, yet a walking bone undernourished looking Amal Clooney who also had a nose job, is supposedly stunning, LOL ….LOL

        Too hilarious.

  20. lila fowler says:

Veronica Lake was only known for her hair and prettiness, not acting ability. She died a lonely, broke alcoholic.

Never heard of Toland Krieger. And maybe Blake stays in all the time because she doesn’t have any friends?

  21. Christina says:

Good for her – she may not be the best actress, but at least she seems genuine and genuinely happy. All the best to her and hers…

  22. Katherine says:

she has always just been very average.

she really needs to milk the wholesome girl next door instead of trying to be something shes not- miss glamour puss. she was all wrong in gossip girl and her current role as Goop 2.0 is even more boring.

she’s a bore. just compared to Rihanna’s pic next to her, Rihanna is more of an eye catching beauty.

Blake has always been a tomboy deluding herself as the next Marilyn. Puh-lease.

  23. roxy750 says:

I’m going to start calling her WestGoop

  24. mar says:

    mehhhh ….. next

  25. anne_000 says:

“Blake Lively’s director: she ‘is a statuesque timeless beauty a la Veronica Lake’”

Lake wasn’t statuesque. She was 4′ 11″. Also, she was far more beautiful than Lively. Lively is an average pretty girl. Not ‘beautiful.’

  26. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

VL was under five feet tall.

    • boredblond says:

Exactly! She was the opposite of statuesque! That’s why she was often teamed with Alan Ladd, who was a shorty

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Plus, no one wanted to work with her. I think that may have included Ladd though, too.

  27. oneshot says:

puta, please. It takes more than hair and (fake) tits to make someone a “timeless beauty”.

    Veronica Lake, my foot.

  28. Tigriski says:

Blake is gorgeous I love her.

  29. NeoCleo says:

She is one of the most vanilla looking people I’ve ever seen. She qualifies as pretty, but totally uninteresting. As for “classic?” Really. Classic beauty to me is someone like Maureen O’Hara or Ava Gardner.

  30. Irene says:

I just realized who she looks like: Helen Hunt. Finally. I’ve been trying to figure out who she reminds me of for years, and it’s been driving me crazy.

  31. Tracy says:

I find her absolutely stunning and elegant, even in casual clothes. She seems to be a soft spoken person, which is being confused with dull. She’s not dull to me, and I think she has a wonderful levelheadedness about her and her choices reflect that. And I hope she never “reels it in” when talking about her love of new motherhood. You go, Blake.

    • Jenna says:

Me too! I don’t get why so many people hate on her. I would kill to look like her lol

  32. Naddie says:

Had to google Veronica Lake. And I think she’s the same as Blake: their beauty is in the long straight blonde hair. Blake is sexy, but average looking. I remmember being shocked to know she’d be the one playing Serena in Gossip girl, since the character is supposed to be very beautiful.

  33. Jenna says:

Blake is GORGEOUS. Everything about her is gorgeous. I don’t care about any augmentations she may or may not have had– that’s beside the point. She’s beautiful. She’s my girl crush 🙂
