How bad is Sofia Vergara’s movie ‘Hot Pursuit’? Really, really bad.

Here are some photos of Sofia Vergara getting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. I find it interesting that they timed this event specifically ahead of the release of Sofia’s big co-starring role in Hot Pursuit, but Reese Witherspoon didn’t come out for it. Instead, it ended up being a big Modern Family event. Which is nice because Sofia loves her Modern Family costars and coworkers.

Anyway, I feel for Sofia. Her promotional tour for Hot Pursuit has been hijacked by her psycho ex’s lawsuit, and now in every interview she does, she has to answer insanely personal questions about children, fertility, IVF, lawyers, reproductive choice and whether Nick Loeb is a stalker (spoiler: he IS a stalker). Combine that with the fact that Hot Pursuit’s reviews are reaching Adam Sandler-esque proportions. Rotten Tomatoes has Hot Pursuit at 5% this morning (down from 6% a few hours ago). Critics are going hard too. The words being used: shrill, unfunny, awkward, “Reese Witherspoon’s worst movie,” equal opportunity fiasco, painful, illogical. Yeah, it’s a bad movie. Poor Sofia. She’s having such a terrible few weeks.

Incidentally, Sofia also covers the new issue of Cosmo Latina – go here to see. The interview is pretty boring, but she does say that having kids with Joe Manganiello “isn’t a priority.” Ya think?

I think Reese Witherspoon was trying to go back to her comedic route with this, – Election, Legally Blonde, – after serious roles that did not do business at the box office, but misfired.

    • ed says:

More like she was playing the “one for me one for them” game so many actors play.

    • tracking says:

Well, Wild didn’t misfire. But, yeah, was probably looking to headline a big-box office comedy. With comedies in particular, something might look good on paper but just not translate well to the screen.

Vergara’s shtick grates on my nerves, but I thought she was delightful in Chef.

    • avxds says:

I’m only watching this movie if both of them get their tits out and have a pillow fight.

      • Sarah says:

@ avxds : So I guess this means we are never going to a movie together 🙂 But I would still do coffee afterwards as long as you didn’t talk about your ideal movie 🙂 And we had brownies too.

    • holly hobby says:

The ads on tv looks horrible. The critics were right it did look shrill and unfunny. That was a big big mistake.

  2. Yoo Hoo says:

Does anyone believe her relationship with Joe is real? Contract, contract, contract.

    • Misti64 says:

      Questions, questions.
Just my opinion, but Sofia strikes me as someone who likes drama and turbulence in a relationship. She was with that Loeb creep for a long time, and before him some other shady largher than life Miam guy. IF, a big IF, this relationship is real, I think she wil be bored of placid Joe before long.

      • boredblond says:

The Halle Berry factor? Sorry to hear bad about the film..unlike many, I like Reese and was glad to see a comic return.

    • Cricket says:

Agreed! All the blinds about it, I feel sorry for Sophia. She is such a beautiful and funny lady. Stalker boy is really doing a job on her.

    • Rocket says:

I think its real. She could do much much better than him for bearding gig. She IS the highest paid woman on TV with multiple successful businesses. And shes well liked and very beautiful. No less than Tom Cruise has tried to contract that, Joe Whoever is a nobody in those stakes.

Besides she discussed him on Howard very convincingly and let me tell you, shes not that great an actress. Blind items are sensationalist bull crap, if they were real than every man in Hollywood would be gay and every woman a beard.

    • Sarah says:

Yes, I think it’s a contract. But it’s a very do-able contract. They seem plausible and neither of them really seems to be “baggage” to follow the other around (cough-George Clooney-cough). I wish them a long and happy contract 🙂

  3. Catelina says:

I mean, I would say I was shocked but… Was anyone not expecting this to be panned?

    • Rachel says:

Yeah. From the previews, it looked like a total crapfest.

      I like her dress though.

    • CG says:

IKR????? Every preview I’ve seen has been painfully unfunny. I highly doubt I’d even watch it on HBO.

    • Lama Bean says:

Exactly. I never expected this to be a good movie.

And Reese is nowhere to be found because they hate each other. The “we instantly clicked” schtick is only for promotion.

    • chick binewski says:

Yeah, the previews are dreck. Each clip looks like they cobbled together a bunch of first takes; none of the deliveries of ‘punch lines’ are remotely funny.

I do really like how the Modern Family cast seems to back each other up. Julie Bowen in particular seems like a real momma bear. She takes her tv daughter to break up with the nasty abusive boyfriend, and last week she really spoke up for Sofia – saying how wonderful & kind she is and doesn’t deserve this kind of attention.

  4. Tiffany says:

Sofia is a producer on this film, she knows her strengths and knew that this was not going to win any awards. It is a female staring, produced and directed comedy. It is two hours where you will enjoy silly fluff and I plan on seeing it for that reason. I think the film will be fine and no one’s career is going to end because of it.

    • Rocket says:

Precisely. Who exactly couldnt see this was fluff movie making? I dont think Sofia was expecting Best Picture at the Oscars.

Also, fluff movies aimed at girls traditionally get slammed much worse than movies of the same callibre aimed at guys <<<<<< fact. Lets bear this in mind.

    • neelyo says:

I was hoping it would be a throwback to something like OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE but I’m sure it’s bad. I’m sure I’ll watch a few minutes of it on cable.

Besides, the only award this movie is aiming for is the People’s Choice. The reviews won’t/don’t matter.

  5. aims says:

The movie looks awful, not even a red box rental.

  6. nk868 says:

i put the blame on reese 100%, not sofia. reese is over the top schticky in the promos, but sofia looks funny as usual

  7. OSTONE says:

It looks like bad comedy, but I’ve seen worse movies with the hubs about dudes doing stupid sh*t. Rather support the women behind this project even if it’s silly. If we want more projects for women, about women we need to support them.

    • Curious Cole says:

      +1
When female helmed films are given poor reviews I always wonder if critics would be quite as vicious if it were the standard male-led cast. And if it doesn’t immediately break box office records execs pronounce women’s movies to be a financial risk and we’re set back again.

      • Rocket says:

The answer is no. The “chick flick” (I want to die for even using that stupid term) instantly loses points just for existing. Seriously, only a handful have crossed the over 50% mark.

  8. Jen says:

The previews kept giving me the feeling they were hoping this would be the next “The Heat”-and the previews also made it pretty clear they didn’t pull it off…at all.

  9. lucy2 says:

I have no desire to see this in the theater, but I hope it does OK at the box office. I’d like Sofia to get a win right now, with all the crap her ex has been dumping on her, and I always like to see female lead comedies do well. It can’t possibly be worse than the stuff Adam Sandler or Kevin James put out there.
The budget is fairly low, so it should at least make a small profit.

  10. Boopybette says:

Oh so its a flop..then it can’t be Reese Witherspoon’s movie anymore, it has to be the Latina’s.

  11. Tiffany27 says:

5%??? Damn. That’s like getting points for giving the film a name.

  12. Alessio says:

Nothing reese will ever do can be as bad as four christmases!!!! too bad the trailers made it look really fun to me! and sofia and reese had a blast during this press tour, oh well

    • Sarah says:

I liked Four Christmases but I admit I love schlocky comedies and am easily entertained 🙂 And a summer comedy is great because you are in an air-conditioned theatre for two hours instead of outside in the sweltering heat.

  13. Anne says:

Too bad about the negative reviews, I’d like Sofia to get a win.

  14. Izzy says:

I don’t care how bad it is. I’m gonna pay my $9 for a ticket, even if I don’t actually see it. Call it my contribution to her anti-stalking campaign.

    • Katie says:

Seems like a bad movie is the LEAST of her problems. This whole EX fiasco should be a lesson to all–BE CAREFUL WHO YOU HITCH YOUR WAGON TO!

  15. Fiona says:

    I might see it anyway.

  16. Rennea says:

    From the LA Times:
    http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-hot-pursuit-review-20150508-column.html

“Seemingly destined to become a late-night punch line, the movie, which plays the “sexy” and “sexless” female stereotypes at full blast, is so bad you’d think it was directed by the worst sort of male chauvinist director.

Not so. Anne Fletcher, the filmmaker behind the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds rom-com romp “The Proposal,” directed “Hot Pursuit.” What’s more, Witherspoon is one of the producers, and Vergara is an executive producer. This is an equal-opportunity fiasco.”

    OUCH!

  17. KelT says:

Not surprised. Who thought that this pairing would work? My first thought was that Reese was trying to (continue to) get away from romantic comedies, but was digging way too deep with this one. It looks absolutely ridiculous.

Reese was great in Wild, but I would caution anyone who watches it with kids, or who is sensitive to sex and drugs, about the flashback scenes.
