Rose McGowan has steadly worked in Hollywood for two decades. She’s not an A-lister, but she never suffers to find gigs. Rose decided she didn’t need to appear in an Adam Sandler movie after reading a wardrobe note, which was tucked into a script. Sandler’s movies are usually sexist (and racist too, although Vanilla Ice will defend them as comedies). The guys run around looking like slobs. The dudebros are fawned over by super pretty women, who are dressed all sex-ay for the men. Here’s the gross casting note as tweeted by Rose:

Ugh. I assume this wardrobe note is for an audition because the real movie wardrobe would probably be even worse. Sandler and his casting people want to see which women will pull out the stops for this part. I’m surprised they didn’t want white clothing, so the guys could hold a wet t-shirt contest too. That’s a crude thing to say, but this is a guy who’s made millions to tell the same doody jokes for decades. Oh, and “Madam Panhandler” totally sounds like a character name for a Sandler movie. Well done, Rose.

On another note, if that’s a recent picture of Rose, WOW is she looking good! For a while she was going a bit overboard with injectables and looked a bit “off”. I’m glad she’s back to looking like her beautiful self.
It’s my understanding that she was in a car accident, and the resulting plastic surgery changed her facial structure somewhat. Not saying she hasn’t had work done before or since the accident, but I don’t think the extreme appearance change was strictly her choice.
She had work way above and beyond anything from a car accident, but whatever she’s got going on right now she needs to stick with, because she looks much better.

I’m sorry, THAT is how those two grown men dressed to attend a movie premiere? Gym clothes and sneakers, to a PREMIERE. But the women have to dress in skin tight, body baring stuff just to audition. That is flat out appalling.
Sandler has 2 daughters. I wonder how he’d feel about them being asked to dress that way for a job interview someday.
They are way underdressed and Selena to me is overdoing it in that high split. She looks comfortable and is trying to hide the top of the split that is showing too much. She didn’t need to wear that.

To be fair, that picture is from the photocall at the ‘summer of sony pictures entertainment 2015’ event (I think I got that right) in Cancun.
Yes, the guys are dressed like they’re just taking the dog for a walk on an early morning, but every one there, also from other movies was dressed casual. Selena was waaayyy overdressed.
If Sandler’s “wardrobe note” is any indication of the expectations women are held to in these kinds of movies, I’m not surprised Selena overdressed for the occasion. The pressure to be sexy with perfect hair and makeup is pretty clear.
She is way overdressed for a photocall for a movie that will probably go straight to DVD. And also… a waist high slit for a photocall for a kids’ movie???
Selena is overdressed, but better over than under, I think. They showed up looking like that to a professional work event! Not saying a suit is necessary, more casual is fine, but maybe decent pants (not sweatpants, not shorts) on at least one of the men would have been nice.

Good for her for tweeting about this but I hope she doesn’t suffer for going up against Sandler. He’s a powerful guy. Hope he’s not vindictive and I hope other directors and producers don’t decide she’s not a team player.
Well look at his movies.. the women all wear certain types of clothing; especially if they are attractive. Then think; he probably has sent such notes to them too; Rose just shared hers. I don’t get the appeal of being in one of his films and why you would even work to try and be in one of his films.
Honest question—I have heard on other sites that Sandler is an incredibly nice guy. Always polite to fans, in no way a famewhore (except in his willingness to do awful movies, I guess), faithful and loving husband, etc. Any truth to that?

My impression was formed by a reddit thread where people who lived in LA were invited to post about celebrities. A former waiter said Sandler had been a regular, and was incredibly to the staff, fans, and to his family. There’s a lot of Sandler-hate on reddit, so I was inclined to believe it. I’m hunting for the thread now, but of course can’t find it…

It is entirely possible for a celebrity to be polite to fans/service staff and still be a bag of dicks to the people they actually work with. Hollywood operates on the idea that the gossip is contained within the circle (the internet has changed that somewhat, but I’m still surprised by water cooler gossip I hear about people that the internet/public still thinks is nice), so a lot of celebrities feel freer to be terrible behind the scenes but maintain completely different public personas. I never trust anything a waiter tells me about a celebrity. I’d rather hear from the assistants on set or the at the agency they work with. They’ll see more of the real person.
This may not be a popular opinion, but I’ve only ever stories of Adam Sandler being a nice guy. Is she saying he wrote the note, or the casting dept of the film wrote the note?

A note like that wouldn’t come from her agent, it would come from the casting director on the project, who is hired by the producers, in this case, Adam Sandler, as he produces all his own stuff. An agent’s note would be like, “Don’t be late,” or, “Don’t forget to make eye contact.” Casting directors would put in any notes about wardrobe/styling, because they’re trying to approximate the look for the film and they want the best idea of what they’re getting from everyone who auditions. Casting directors don’t make that stuff up out of a vaccuum, they’re taking cues from the producers on the project.
As I said upthread, it’s possible for Adam Sandler to be really nice in public and a terror behind the scenes, which based on the leaked Sony emails, seems to be the case. I’ve also heard he’s good with fans, but the people at Sony seem to loathe him. As they are the ones with prolonged contact and not just thirty second interactions, I tend to think the people who complained about him at Sony have a better idea of the real Adam Sandler.

Honestly, I think it ties into the madonna/whore complex. There are “good” girls (i.e, virginal and innocent, the kind he will likely expect his daughters to become) and the “bad” ones (the sexual ones). A fair amount of sexist beliefs get justified with these stereotypes.

I didn’t even know she went the director route and just watchted the trailer for her short film on youtube – and it looks really good! I’m positively surprised (because I know her mostly from crappy TV stuff).

Feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t see this as a big deal. They tell you what to wear to auditions lots of times, to come in character for that particular role in that particular movie. This isn’t for some 9-5 job interview. Full discloser I’m a woman and a fan of both Rose and Adam’s work !
Not in character. That’s just how women are expected to show up for an audition, regardless of what kind of role they’ll be playing. She could be auditioning for the role of a Harvard educated lawyer and that’s what she’d be asked to wear.
The problem is that objectfying women is a trademark of his films, it’s not a particular role in a particular movie. Any pretty actress in his films have their sexuality explored in a sexist, shallow way.

Actually, no, people tend to hate that. It’s like trying to sell a house: you want to decorate enough that the place seems welcoming, but not so much that people can’t imagine their own stuff in the house. The note in Rose’s audition script sounds like blank-slating the actresses so they’ll look fairly uniform on casting tapes (white shows terribly on film, thus the “no white” line). The problem is they’re being asked to wear something exposing, making it clear that their bodies are as much on audition as their talent is.
For the record, in my experience working casting for commercials, the people casting directors like best are the ones who come in dressed neatly and professionally, as you would for any job interview.
Have heard plenty of actors saying the went into the audition embodying the character they were up for. Clothing choice, hairstyles etc. If the role was for a sexy women in the film, wouldn’t they want to see how she pulls off being sexy? People are really making way too big a deal over this. She didn’t want to wear the required wardrobe, she didn’t audition, plain and simple.
There’s a difference between dressing to suggest and “going in character”, but maybe it’s only sticking out to me because I’ve sat through casting sessions.
I know I’m supposed to be totally outraged about that Selena Gomez picture but I don’t think you can blame either guy.
Kevin James is a big guy who often dresses sloppy and Adam Sandler has made no effort to ever look good at any of his premieres including the movies with all men. When you hear women say, “I swear he’d wear the same ratty shirt every day if I let him.” these are the two guys to picture.
This was a daytime premiere for a children’s movie and Selena looks WAY overdressed. She’s made a few very poor fashion choices on her own in an effort to push her sexiness so I’m wondering if she tried to do the same here and realized a little too late now it didn’t work.

Wow, they really put a lot of effort into their outfits choices for their movie premiere. I’m going to take a big guess and say that Sandler and James are each other’s stylists.
I don’t fiind that note incredulous or offensive. Asking a potentional cast member to dress somewhat in character is pretty normal so I don’t get the misogyny vibe. Sorry, I can’t help but side-eye her in particular for acting all offended re misogyny anyway. She lives for being the sex kitten so why the offense when it’s been her preference and bread & butter?
Hollywood is more misogynistic than this. This is nothing. They have to be able to see what an actress’ body looks like without asking her to take her clothes off. They need to know what they’re hiring. Also, the reason they say no white is because it shows up too bright on film and in photos. It makes the actor’s complexion look unappealing by comparison. It reflects too much of the bright stage lights. When you see someone wearing “white” on TV (even a white shirt on a news anchor) it’s probably off white or a light pastel color that’s reading white on camera (used to audition, was always told never to wear white and given this reason).They will take photos and possibly screen test the ones they like.
@Hoopjumper. Yes I’ve met him in NYC. We were celebrating my sisters 16th. We were eating at a very nice restaurant and he came over (noticed we were celebrating) wished her a Happy Birthday. He asked her if it was her first time in NYC and if she liked it, what did she have planned etc etc. Gave her suggestions of places to eat. Then on his way out stopped by again. Told her to enjoy her he hopes she enjoys her trip and to have a Happy 16th. I mean I thought that was pretty nice it definitely made her trip. He could have just ignored her. Can’t speak on his professional behavior but he seemed like a nice guy in person.
I don’t see the big deal, if they’re looking for a character who dresses a certain way they’ll want to see the actresses dressed like that.
The female leads in most of Adam Sandler’s movies are smart, sassy, cool women. I don’t see the issue here. Maybe it has to do with the character Rose was auditioning to play? I don’t get the hate on Sandler at all.
