Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marc Jacobs at the Globes: blending into the background?

HBO Post 2016 Golden Globe Awards Party

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, a presenter at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, walked the red carpet in a black and gold gown by Marc Jacobs. The dress featured floral appliqués and a bloom over her shoulder. The 38-year-old actress, who took home a Golden Globe of her own last year for her role in The Honorable Woman, accessorized with gold drop earrings, gold bangles and a gold clutch. Her makeup was subtle, except for her fuchsia lipstick (NARS Audacious Lipstick in Michiyo). It’s not my favorite look for Maggie. The dress is okay, her hair looks great, but the lipstick is too pink for the gown. Her look did come in handy, I suppose, if she didn’t feel like being sociable at the HBO after party, as she seemingly blended into the background.

Joanne Froggatt, nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie for her role as Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, looked positively radiant in her Reem Acra gown. She may not have won an award this year, but her look is absolutely a winner. The periwinkle blue shade perfectly complements her hair and skin tone and I love the plunging neckline. Her hair and makeup are on point and I think it was a smart move that she opted no to wear a necklace. The Chopard pink diamond earrings she’s wearing, valued at $1 million, were a perfect accessory, along with her sleek silver clutch.

Malin Akerman also hit the red carpet in Reem Acra. The 37-year-old actress similarly went necklace-less in a strapless silver beaded gown with a sweetheart neckline and a peplum detail. Hair-wise, Malin opted to slick back her locks with a sleek bun and wore dark silver nail polish. She accessorized with subtle diamond earrings and rings and a teeny silver clutch. (What can she possibly fit in that?) Initially, I wasn’t overly fond of this look, as I’m not a peplum fan, but once I saw the side view, I was won over. She pulls off this look and she looks like she’s having fun.

E! hostess Giuliana Rancic gave us 2 looks last night. For her pre-show red carpet coverage, she donned a red lace gown by Mac Duggal, accompanied by shoes by Manolo Blahnik and Forevermark diamond earrings and bracelet. She posted a picture on her Instagram with the caption “Golden Globes look #1” and I couldn’t agree more. It is #1 in my book. I love this dress. How better to cover the red carpet than to wear red? The color looks great with her tan skin and blond hair and I am a big fan of the high neck and long sleeves. I am coveting that bracelet as well.

Afterwards, the 41-year-old hit the red carpet herself in a coral gown by Australian designer Alex Perry featuring floor-length sleeve and cutouts at her waist. She was wearing Manolo Blahnik shoes, although you can’t see them, and more Forevermark diamond jewels. The color is alright, the sleeves are magnificent, but I can’t with the cutouts. I think maybe a lower cut neckline would have been a better substitute. But hey, you hang on to this dress, Giuliana, you can send me the red one!

One of Maggie’s best dresses in awhile. The cut flattered her for once, and I can live without the pattern. She’s always a little quirky, but at least this dress is cut well.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

Maggie looks okay. She usually wears things that are a bit more interesting.
Joanne looks sooooo very boring. Boring colour, boring dress, boring hair, boring makeup. And the neckline looks tacky. I really like her, though.
    Malin looks awful.
Giulianna looks aokay for Giulianna. Contoversial opinion – I really like her. I think she’s a very good RC presenter.

  3. Goats on the Roof says:

Malin’s dress is awful. Just awful. I’ve yet to see a peplum I like.

I’d love to see a picture of Maggie’s dress NOT in front of a background that clashes hideously with it – unfortunate coincidence but not her fault! The dress looks like it suits her skin tone and coloring nicely when you take that factor out. The carpet and backdrop also clash with each other, why would they pick such a loud backdrop when all varieties of dresses were being photographed there? Joanne looks lovely, I don’t really like Malin’s dress.

I swear, Maggie Gyllenhaal cannot style herself (or find someone who can).. first, her boobs needs a little bit of support, second she always crouch so I would have covered the shoulder and done something for her waist area too.. I mean, she’s beautiful but every dress she picks seems to highlight her flaws.

love the Gyllenhaal’s all around. I will never know why she married such a douche, though. Rancic…it’s amazing with the human body can withstand.

Maggie’s dress is one of her better ones. Not something I’d choose, but not bad for her. Joanna’s looks uncomfortable, and I don’t care for any of the others either.

  8. Greenieweenie says:

Maggie is 38. What world is this?? Remember Secretary? I’m just realizing that all the young stars I grew up with are all now old, like me. We’re all getting old together. Everyone’s OOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLD.

  9. Miss Jupitero says:

Maggie looks more like 48. I wish she would stop hunching over.

  10. Pants says:

I actually really, really loved Maggie’s dress.

    • Carol says:

Me too. Maggie always wears something interesting and it never works. This time, I think, she looks fantastic. But she’s got to learn how to stand up straight!

  11. SamiHami says:

She always seems so frumpy to me. She would benefit from a good stylist.

  12. LAK says:

    What was Maggie thinking?

This dress didn’t look too bad against the background of the GG, but at this party, against that wall, really seeing how fugly it is.

  13. Pondering thoughts says:

    Maggie Gyllenhaal

It was just bad luck that that background was so similar to the dress. Otherwise great evening-dress and it really really suits Maggie.!!!!

I love Maggie’s acting mostly becuase she chooses roles that most would pass up and she plays them to the hilt – awesome! But, she is not attractive to me – face or body, so whatever she wears no matter how matronly, I’m never disappointed. It’s just who she is. I actually respect that she embraces her non-Hollywood looks and just seems to wear what she wants to.

Malin Aikerman – please stop. Tired of the industry trying to push her on us as some kind of femme fatale or sexy sexy thang. She isn’t. She’s tries really hard – I mean really hard, but she isn’t any kind of “trophy” or vixen. She’s average. Her dress does not flatter at all. Makes her appear thick-waisted and I don’t even think she is.

Joanne’s earrings are worth 1 million dollars? Are u kidding me? Can u imagine losing one at the after party? Also isn’t this like a main attraction for potential thieves?

  16. What's inside says:

Maggie, please go away. Nobody cares. Really.
