Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi announce their new arrival – a fur kid

People's Choice Awards 2016

America’s favorite dancing talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres is hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet in the home she shares with her wife Portia de Rossi – but it’s not what you think.

The couple, who will be celebrating their 8th wedding anniversary this August, recently added a new member to their family – an adorable puppy. Ellen named the mixed breed pooch “Kid”, and announced his arrival on her show on Thursday. The comedienne joked, “There’s been rumors forever — ‘When are you and Portia going to have a kid?’ — and, so, now I can say, we have a Kid.”

Kid joins the DeGeneres/de Rossi clan, which currently includes three cats and two other dogs, Augie and Wolf. Ellen said that their other fur kids are “teaching him a lot.” The 9-week old puppy is also giving Ellen an appreciation for motherhood. As she related on the show, “It really makes me appreciate what it’s like to be a mother, because I’m trying to hold a puppy while I’m trying to make coffee, and I can’t do anything. He doesn’t let me do anything.”

I love that they named the dog “Kid”. For a lot of couples, pets are kind of like “practice babies”, but I think Ellen and Portia might have fulfilled their parental instincts with their furry family. Speaking from personal experience, my ex and I got a dog because we wanted a dog, not a kid substitute. My marriage didn’t last, but I have a gorgeous white German shepherd keeping me company while I write this. If Ellen and Portia are trying to “buck the system” and demonstrate that a true happy family doesn’t have to involve children, more power to them. If nothing else, they added a cute new puppy to the family.

World, meet Portia's and my new puppy, Kid.

Dawwww. Something sweet and heartwarming. Just the pick me up I needed after yesterday’s news.

It’s cute. But a pet is not like a kid unless it’s a baby goat.

      • sarah says:

Eh? But to them (and many people) pets are like kids. I dog sit for an older couple who call their dogs their kids, it’s cute, it’s more so the emotional void than “technically they are not kids” lol

All of her dogs are so cute, but that puppy is exactly what I want! A little scruffier muffin. ❤️

    • I Choose Me says:

      Isn’t his face just adorable?

    • Little Darling says:

I was never a dog person until I wound up with The Teenager’s two yorkies and I have to say I love their little faces SO MUCH! Soooooooo much.

Kids’ face is just like that, you kind of want to smother it in kisses!

I’ve had cats my whole life. Have a cat tattoo. Then a rescue pup found her way into our life, and I’ve been completely dog-whipped. I exist now to serve pup’s needs.

I hadn’t watched Ellen’s show in a long time, but happened to catch an interview she did recently with Rami Malek, and Wow! she is really just phoning it in these days, isn’t she?
    Anyway, Kid’s so cute!

Something about her attitude/style has changed for a while now, something is different. It kind of came through even with the awards show she hosted, whichever/whenever that was.

      • Sea Dragon says:

Will you elaborate? I used to watch clips of her interviews on youtube (its been a year or two) and I remember how charming and affectionate she was with her guests.

    • Tate says:

I stopped watching a few years ago.

    • Alexi says:

Ellen is beyond wealthy and about as interesting as a wet paper towel.seriously. Although I do like her homes. And why does her apparent narcissism make every long term partner ie gold digger Portia (vegan chain smoker I think) and Anne Heche morph into looking like Ellen’s sister??? Although with Ellen probably being worth half a bill I bet Heche rues the day she started shagging that cameraman!

Awwwwww. *turns into a mushy useless mess*

  5. Lucy2 says:

Cute puppy! And I like their reasoning for the name.

  6. cannibell says:

So sweet. Happy for Ellen and Portia. But the line that got me was yours “…gorgeous white German Shepherd keeping me company….”

My 15-year-old Shepherd mix went to the Big Dog Park in the Sky in November.

Please hug that Shepherd for me.

    • Kitten says:

Aw so sorry for your loss.

    • mia girl says:

Losing a beloved pet is so difficult. I’m so sorry.
When I lost my Golden Retriever a few years ago a friend sent me this:

“It came to me that every time I lose a dog,
they take a piece of my heart with them,
and every new dog who comes into my life
gifts me with a piece of their heart.
      If I live long enough,
all the components of my heart will be dog,
and I will become as generous and loving as they are”

Oh, cannibell… you poor thing. I’m sorry for your pain but happy for your years of happiness. Pets make life so much richer, and I’m sure you did the same in return for your pup.

      • cannibell says:

Thanks, @Kitten, @Mia & @Brittney. She was my heart on four legs, and I’m so glad I got to have all those years with her. @Mia – that’s a lovely poem/prayer. (I was passing by our local Humane Society a couple of weeks ago and stopped in on impulse to look at the dogs…..I wasn’t planning on adopting, just wanted to look. But I was surprised to walk into the area where the dogs were and start crying. She was one of a kind…..)

  7. Patricia says:

Portia is so gorgeous, I could look at her all day…

    • justagirl says:

She’s practically lit from within…she looks like a genuinely caring person with a good spirit.

  8. Vivi says:

That puppy is dopo adorable and i 100% relate to waking up at 5AM because puppy wants to play!
It took months until our Sammy agreed to “sleep in” until 6.30!!

  9. Kitten says:

Truthfully, Yorkies aren’t my fave but I think it’s great that Ellen and Portia have a new puppy friend to look after.

    • ISO says:

I think it said that Kid is “mixed” breed, who knows how he’ll look when grown, but supposedly not a yorkie.

  10. Bettyrose says:

I just clicked to see pics of the fur kid. If there’s news involving Ellen & Portia, I missed it.

  11. Josefina says:

That adorable little nose was all I needed to see this crappy morning. Thank you for this.

  12. QQ says:

I’m typing from the floor, an entire puddle of feels, im in the throes of a baby dog Fever

  13. kri says:

THAT PUPPY FACE! I need that in my life. It makes me so happy when people take such wonderful care of animals-it shows on the faces of the pet. It’s lovely and it reminds me that there is always light in the darkness. Furry light!
