Star: Naomi Watts broke up with Liev Schreiber due to his moods, temper

"Spotlight" New York Premiere
Last week Star Magazine reported that Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber had split up sometime in November. Their evidence seemed to center around Naomi skipping the Golden Globes, where Liev was nominated for his work on Ray Donovan, and the couple selling their house in the Hamptons. However Naomi and Liev were papped out walking together just a couple of weeks ago and she’s been Instagramming photos with him and their kids. Plus they were working on a movie together in December and seemed friendly then too. If they split in November they’re hiding it remarkably well.

This week Star doubled down with a full length article about their reasons for breaking up. I really hope they’re just filling space and this isn’t true at all.

Insiders say the actress is fed up with his mercurial mood swings and terrible temper.

“Naomi realized she couldn’t live her life constantly treading on eggshells. She never knew what sort of mood he would be in, and the smallest thing would set him off,” says the source, adding that Liev has already moved out of the recently renovated Tribeca loft he shared with Naomi and their children, Alexander, 8, and Samuel, 7. “He is not an easy man to live with…”

Sources say Naomi called it quits just one week after they began shooting the boxing biopic The Bleeder in November…

The demands of juggling two careers has also taken a toll. Liev spends have the year shooting in L.A., and the bicoastal separation hasn’t been easy on the family…

The couple are, however, trying to put on a good face for their sons. Their reps have denied the split, and they spent the holidays in Naomi’s home country, Australia…

“It’s certainly not what Liev wants, but it shows how serious Naomi is about this split,” says the insider. “They’ll keep the breakup quiet for now, but it’s going to become obvious sooner or later. It’s a really sad situation because they were considered such a stable couple for so long.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Their reps have denied this but somehow Star has been running this story for two weeks, which suggests to me either that something is going on and Star has a halfway decent source or that Star is really scrapped for stories this week. Toss a coin I guess. I have my fingers crossed that they’re not splitting up. If so, I will be crying into some chocolate and wine. I really will! They’re my favorite celebrity couple.

And I don’t think Liev has a temper or is moody or whatever, I just think he’s a fabulous actor and he’s getting confused with his character on Ray Donovan.

First cold morning in NYC. Grateful for Best coffee @livelaughingman #freezing

Why do men think they look good in watch caps?

  2. The Original G says:

    Nevermind….

  3. Dorothy#1 says:

I love them too!! He is an underrated actor IMO.

  4. ell says:

i just wrote in another post that i believe persistent rumour. even if they don’t get it completely right, they’re usually on point that something is going on pretty much always. imo they’re either on the verge of splitting of they’re already done, but doing it the goopy way which seems to be the thing nowadays (and it isn’t bad either, when there are children involved it’s best to get along).

  5. Dee squared says:

They don’t look particularly happy in those photos. Shame.
Also, watch out for typos. There are quite a few of them in this article.

  6. Crumpet says:

He absolutely is moody and has a temper. I thought this was well known. I don’t know if they are still together or not, but Naomi has undoubtedly been the one to bend the knee in this relationship.

    • Fanny says:

Yes, I thought his temper was well known too.

I remember Naomi appeared in a skit at an autism benefit which somehow involved kissing someone. Naomi was talking to Jon Stewart about it later and said as she was doing it she was looking over at Liev “to make sure he was ok” because she was nervous he might be mad.

I thought it was bizarre that she was worried about that. They are both actors, they are used to fake-kissing people and this was obviously a joke as part of a skit.

    • Fanny says:

@Triple Cardinal. Nope. It was “Night of Too Many Stars” in 2010 to benefit Autism research, and the kiss was not nearly as noteworthy as Naomi kissing Nicole.

  7. Nev says:

Ray Donovan is everything. I hope this isn’t true.

  8. mkyarwood says:

The kids do look kind of shell shocked there.

    • Miffy says:

I wouldn’t go on that. They’re little kids facing a wall of photographers. It’s like when people try to use pap shots of North West as proof of how unhappy she is, have you seen how some of those photographers act? Running, shouting, not caring for the personal space of the people they’re photographing. I’m not making a point as to whether any of those kids have a happy home life or not but certainly that environment is not where their happy and safe side is going to be captured.

  9. PHAKSI says:

One of my favourite celebrity couples. This makes me sad 🙁

  10. minx says:

I love him as an actor but he strikes me as difficult.
She, on the other hand, seems like a sweetie.

    • brincalhona says:

She wasn’t much of a sweetie doing press for that awful Diana film. If you’re in a crap movie, don’t take it out on journalists.

  11. Anon33 says:

Code for “he hits her.” Been there.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Glad you are using the past tense. My best to you.

    • Susie M. says:

Yep. That was my first thought.

    • Celebitchy says:

I’m really sorry you went through this anon. Please take this story for what it is though, a tabloid article based on Liev’s persona on a TV show. (An excellent one.) I don’t think we can jump to the conclusion that he’s abusive at all.

      • StormsMama says:

He doesn’t have to hit her to be abusive. He may be distant withholding
He may be a Dr Jekyll and mr Hyde with his moods- loving and attentive at 10am but cruel and cold at 10pm
Just clarifying that abuse in a relationshio can be verbal or emotional, insidious and incredibly draining over time.

  12. Hejhej says:

I really hope this is not true because I like them together 🙁 That being said I do think Liev is a handful to live with.

  13. Lucy says:

    Lieeeeeeeees!

  14. Beatrice says:

Who knows what Liev is really like? Men can be awfully different when others aren’t around. I was involved with a man who at first was very sweet, but a few months later began to show his true self. He was moody and had a nasty temper and no one would believe it because in front of other people he was oh so charming and easy-going. When we were alone, his mood could turn on a dime. He never hit me, but would throw things at the wall, stomp around, and curse at nothing in particular. I was always on edge “walking on eggshells” and began to realize it was only a matter of time until he became abusive to me so I said good-bye. You just never know what goes on behind closed doors.

    • chick b says:

Very true and glad you are away from that ex. There’s one in my rear view mirror whose actions I simply will never get over. I thank the gods children were never in the mix.

Of course we only get tiny glimpses of what these people’s lives might be like. But very early on, Naomi would say things like ‘he’s very complicated and of course that’s very attractive’. Liev (who seems smart & I do like that he speaks about the importance of education and culture being important to ALL young people in the U.S., not just the rich) has spoken about the white American male being left behind or some such crap. When you read certain things, fair or not, bells just go off.

Naomi also has (had?) a long-term friendship with Sean Penn so her a-hole meter probably needs some adjusting.

    • Vera says:

Truth. I have a friend who had a spouse like that. One night, she left him with only the clothes on her back and their son. At first it was shocking. They seemed so perfect. Later, we found out that behind closed doors, he was moody, unpredictable, and he beat her, but hitting her in places that she could cover up.

      • Miffy says:

Vera, that’s sick ‘hitting her in places she could cover up’. I know a woman who was in a situation like that. It makes it a little worse, in my opinion, if it was a frenzied attack where the abuser had lost control is a terrifying thought but the fact they’re in enough control to only physically hurt someone where it can’t be seen is just so, so devious. It’s downright evil.

I’m so glad your friend got out, I’m so sorry she or any woman would ever suffer like that.

  15. Esmom says:

I have no idea what to make of this story/rumor but I’ve never seen Naomi look as beautiful as she does in that photo in the pink/black dress. And what is up with them in the last photo? I assume they are in costume for the film mentioned?

    • Kitten says:

I think they were filming The Bleeder (Chuck Wepner biopic) in that shot.
Because we really need another film about a boxer.

Anyway, I love them so much and really hope this isn’t true.

  16. Brunswickstoval says:

These photos of them on bikes always shit me. Wear a helmet! So stupidly dangerous.

    • FingerBinger says:

As long the kids are wearing helmets. Adults being adults have the option not to wear them.

    • Snowflake says:

I agree. My brother was riding a bike without a helmet, got hit by a car. He didn’t wake up for a few days, meanwhile, doctors were saying brain damage. Thankfully no brain damage, after that, though, I always think about that when I see people without helmets.

  17. daphne says:

the kids are just too gaunt, are they being fed well or a goopy diet?

    • M.A.F. says:

or they could just naturally be thin.

    • kels says:

They’re growing, active and metabolisms are probably in high gear. What I wonder about is their schooling – mainly because I have kids the same age. When I see photos of them, they are in LA one week and the next week they’re in NYC – all during school term time. What’s weirder still is the captions for said photos make reference to them going to school (one week it’s west coast, the other it’s east coast). Even if the paps got it wrong, it seems like they’re missing a steady, consistent school routine.

    • Jayna says:

My sister and I were skinny beanpoles as kids growing up, and we ate plenty with a mom who loved southern cooking and baking from scratch. One of my brothers was the same way. The other one was built stockier.

    • Jaded says:

My sister and I were skinny when we were that age, even though we were stomachs on legs. Couldn’t get enough food into us. Then puberty hit and all that ended – the kids look fine, they are gorgeous.

    • minx says:

They’re tall, they have the genes. You eat and burn off everything.
I was that way once, many, many years ago. Sigh.

      • stinky says:

gmafb. now kids have to be fat or something’s wrong. between this and the Barbie thread ima’bout to barf.

    • lurkingweirdo says:

Jeepers…leave the babies out of it.

  18. Tig says:

I love that pink dress! Any word on designer?(yes-shallow that way!)

Re the actual article- a bit too much detail and too close to first story to be totally fabricated. I hope it’s not true as well.

  19. What's inside says:

Couples have rough patches as part of the cycle of a committed relationship. I do not know anything about either of them other than the propaganda, but it may be it is time to take a break, re-evaluate, and see what happens.

  20. Jayna says:

Naomi looks gorgeous in that dress. I’m such a fan of hers and think they make a great couple. Who knows if they are having trouble, but even with that, anything Star writes is just fabrication building upon a rumor and knowledge already out there about his moods, not any secret source. They have zero credibility in my eyes.

  21. Sansa says:

Love Ray Donaven and looked up Liev’s childhood. He grew up pretty weird if I recall almost like a cult. So yeah he is probably not easy to live with….some of the best people are.

  22. Maggie says:

It makes me sad whenever I hear of a family breaking up however he is the most unattractive man. Actually I find him down right ugly! He has the meanest eyes. Ick

    • Jeanne says:

I feel the same way – I just don’t get how so many people have the hots for him! He seems really hairy and too…beefy. And sweaty. Gross.

  23. Minxx says:

I hope they didn’t break up, I was a big fan of Naomi’s when they first got together after the MET gala years ago.. she’s such a sweet, down to earth person. I like Liev too but I totally believe he has a temper and nasty moods – he had a very difficult childhood with a rather unstable mother.
I’ve always suspected he can be difficult.

  24. Dana m says:

I like her hair styled in the bob. Looks good. That is all.

  25. Holmes says:

I hope this is true. She could do much better than him.

  26. Miffy says:

If this weren’t true and I were in their position I’d be suing everyone left, right and center. What a horrible rumour to start about someone… which makes me think it might not be a rumour…

  27. JenniferJustice says:

I don’t beleive any of it. I think he cheated and she’s covering for him for the kids’ sake.
