Drew Barrymore covers Bazaar: ‘I don’t think I’m hot right now necessarily’

MarchNSCover_edited-1
With all the Goops, Reeses and Albas getting magazine covers for their lifestyle brands it’s nice to see Drew Barrymore score a cover. Drew is promoting her Flower Beauty line, which just branched into eyewear, and she also runs Barrymore wines, which is no Coppola wines from what I’ve heard. (I love Coppola wine.) In terms of the editorial, I like a bold brow and I have big brows (my hairdresser is older and keeps trying to convince me to go 90s with my brows), but this is just beyond. I get the impression that the big brow trend is about to jump the shark when I see this cover. Too much powder. The other photos, where it looks like her hair is on fire, are a nod to the Stephen King film she starred in as a child, Firestarter, which she said she’d love to remake. (They seemed to have achieved those firey photos with actual gas flames set up behind her, as you can see in the video on Bazaar’s site.) Inside, Drew talks about her current career and being a mom, and also about her level of fame, which she’s asked about in a roundabout way. She sounds self aware to me, like she knows she’s not a big deal anymore and she’s fine with that.

Drew Barrymore on what “hot” means to her:
“Hot is a state of mind. It’s an energy. You’re hot when you’re motivated. It means you want it and you’re going after it. Hot isn’t about being on the A-list of having a hot body. It’s literally people who are on fire. Like Lena Dunham is on fire. Amy Schumer. Louis C.K. I think their brands of comedy and observational life stuff are some of the coolest I’ve seen in so many years.”

On whether she perceives herself as “hot” right now:
“I don’t think I’m hot right now necessarily, because I have all my irons in a bunch of different fires. I’m writing. I’m doing makeup. I’m doing design. I’m expanding Flower into different categories. I think it’s a huge mistake to think you have to burn bright for your whole life. You cannot sustain it. It’s exhausting, and it’s not very realistic.”

On her experience with Hollywood heat in all its iterations:
“It’s been at different intervals: E.T. was a really exciting time; when I was doing The Wedding Singer and starting Flower Films; making Never Been Kissed and Charlie’s Angels; when I directed Whip It and did Grey Gardens in the same year. Those were times when I really pushed myself and I didn’t care about my sleep, my health. I didn’t have relationships or children that would be a priority over my work.”

[From Bazaar]

The thing that I appreciate about Drew is that she’s still hustling but she’s not always in our faces. She’s not doing a lot of pap walks or going to every opening, nor is she trying to convince us to eat/dress/exercise/meditate her way. Drew is just trudging along as she’s always done. Sure she’s part of a Hollywood legacy but she’s not saying she did it all on her own, she seems to recognize her situation for what it is. I like her, I can’t help it. She’s a bit boring but I think we need more celebrities like that, or at least we need to appreciate the ones we have.

I LOVE that fire photo, saw it on instagram yesterday. I really love it.

Ok now let me read the article.

ETA: I think she’s lovely. Always had a soft spot for her, and I love 50 First Dates (yeah, yell at me). I wish I’d see her more on movies, maybe she needs to do something other than “super sweet” and a bit Ingénue, but I like her low key vibe.

    • lilacflowers says:

I thought she did very well with Grey Gardens, although I never thought a new version of that documentary was necessary. I would like to see her do more work like that but she may not get the offers.

    • Kori says:

I’m with you–I’ve always had a soft spot for her. She seems like a genuine person who went through a lot and just is happy and grateful at where she is now.

      • Kimmy says:

I have a soft spot as well. She’s really come full circle as a person and I really respect her hustle. I do wish she’d stop pairing up with Adam Sandler though. BLended was no Wedding Singer or 50 First Dates.

    • enuff said says:

      I LOVE HER…full stop!

    • aemish says:

I love her & adam sandler movies… I hope you get a chance to see Blended!

  2. Luna says:

I think she’s channeling Lauren Bacall in the cover pic. She looks lovely.

  3. Sumodo1 says:

Weird, weird editorial. Keep these photos away from children and flammable liquids.

  4. Beth says:

I like her too, she’s sweet, sincere and charming. I always felt that I’d like to have her as a friend. Must be nice to hang out with her.

  5. Palar says:

Hilarious she’s referred to as boring considering what she was up to 20/25 years ago!

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I like Drew, and I’m glad she’s boring, considering the mess she could have been with her upbringing. I would say she’s grounded rather than boring, anyway.

    • lilacflowers says:

She was a mess when she was younger. I think she has worked hard to ground herself and earned the right to be boring. Glad she’s happy.

    • Little Darling says:

She was one of the original Hot Messes, but she was always so endearing, so genuine and so loving that she kind of always had everyone rooting for her. I remember when she came back after rehab and getting clean after some very public messes, she was humble and honest and worked her ASS off to get roles again. And then slowly but surely she started morphing into what we see today.

I just love her. LOVE HER. And I just love the life she made for herself.

And Celebitchy – I will further add to your observation that in addition to having a lot of that self awareness about her place in Hollywood and how she got there, when she was a hot mess she never blamed other people for it, including her mother Jade who was an AWFUL influence and puts PMK to shame. She took responsibility, cleaned herself and her life up and began a slow trajectory to where she is today.

    • jammypants says:

I have a soft spot for her and glad she’s doing well for herself now.

    • teacakes says:

Seriously, if there’s anyone in Hollywood who has earned the right to be more boring than watching paint dry, it’s Drew. She’s done an A+++ job of surviving a messy childhood and turning her life around, all the respect to her for that.

  7. Greenieweenie says:

I just wish she’d go back to her pixie-ish days, hair-wise

  8. HollyG says:

I’ve had a soft spot for Drew ever since I read an interview where she said she was alone as a child a lot, so she befriended the avocado tree in her yard and would give it hugs and tell it that she loved it. That is so revealingly sad.

    And now I want guacamole…

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

Aww! Yeah she might have been a Hollywood baby but she essentially raised herself. She managed to have a Lohan patch and come out the other side with her head on her shoulders.

    • Nancy says:

@Holly: Right? She said she had her second child because she didn’t want her first to be an only child as she was. Some people embrace it, others hate it. Since I have six siblings, one being a twin, I can’t imagine going solo….and yes guacamole does rule, like to spread it on BLT’s, my Ina Garten tip of the day.

  9. Nancy says:

She turned out to be lovely. With that family, Jade her mother, the grandfather and father, oh my, she did start out as a wild child. But she turned it around after her first wacky marriage to the MTV guy (Tom Green?), she married a “normal” man and I saw her on Oprah with her kids and she was adorable. Big thumbs up from me.

    • Kori says:

She had another marriage prior to Tom Green–it was super short-lived. I think his name was Jeremy Thomas or something like that? I”m old enough to remember it and old enough to not remember all the details. LOL

      • Beckysuz says:

I’m old with you ….he owned a bar if I recall correctly. I love Drew. She just seems like a really lovely, kind person.

  10. Kaye says:

In the first picture with her hair on fire, she looks like Rosamund Pike.

  11. Mr. Stinky FishFace says:

I have and will always love Drew. She has such a genuine spirit about her and helped me learn that being quirky is okay. Lol I named my second daughter Drew after her.

  12. Really says:

I loved that movie and as a child was quite convinced I too could set anything on fire by staring at it…

  13. Sarah01 says:

I love her makeup line, for someone like me who suffers from dry skin, her blush and lipsticks are the best. They compete with high end brands.
The fire pics are silly, they could have done something fiery with empowerment.

  14. perplexed says:

I like this quote a lot: “I think it’s a huge mistake to think you have to burn bright for your whole life. You cannot sustain it. It’s exhausting, and it’s not very realistic.”

  15. manta says:

I understand her priorities have evolved but I’d like her to have another shot at directing. I loved Whip it. I think she could bring something to the table, based on her first effort.

  16. LeManda says:

    Love, Love, Love Drew.

  17. Bella says:

I’ve always loved Drew, and will forever envy her for being Luke Wilson’s love for awhile.
And I agree with many of the up posts – she’s not boring, just low key – like a hippie.
    That’s what makes her endearing.
It seems to be who she truly is and not put on.

    • Little Darling says:

I wanted to write something about that. I remember reading an interview once, when she was with Luke, and she was talking about being incredibly happy and in disbelief that they found love. Something like that, and it’s always stuck with me. I also Looooooove me some Luke Wilson.

    • Kori says:

And she’s stayed friendly with him as well–he was in some of her movies even after they broke up and his brother (not Owen) was in Whip It.

  18. MrsBPitt says:

For some reason, I always root for Drew…She really picked herself up, and remade herself into a good human being, when she could have turned into “Lindsey Lohan”…

  19. jesb says:

Always and forever have and always will love Drew. A hollywood favourite but always seems very understated and sweet. Love love love Drew

  20. bravocueen says:

I adore her and I’m always rooting for her. Plus, in a world of overdone plastic surgery and “fake” everything, she’s a gorgeous breath of fresh air.

  21. Annie says:

I remember how terrible she was on He’s just not that into you. She should never again do projects she doesn’t believe in. Who cares about being in the spotlight ALL the time. Just be good at your job and do what makes you passionate.

  22. Lucy says:

She seems so lovely!!! And after all she’s been through, she has earned the right to be boring/simple, if there’s such a thing.

  23. Rhiley says:

I will forever and always have a soft spot for Drew but not because of her acting. I think, though, that she is a tremendous business woman, and I respect how she doesn’t blame others for her mistakes. Not her crappy father or her whacked out mom. Drew took responsibility for her own life at a very young age, and as an outsider looking in, it seems both extraordinary and ordinary at the same time. There was a time when she was as messed up as Lindsay Lohan, in and out of rehab, marrying this guy, marrying that guy. But she matured, she made better decisions, and she pulled herself together. Not always easy to do when you are addict. Anyway, I love a good Drew interview and will always have tremendous respect for her.

    • Kym says:

      Rhiley,
I hate to admit that I have not been a fan of Drew’s acting performances – but I love and agree with everything you wrote about her.

    • Granger says:

Totally agree. She’s a terrible actress, but a lovely person.

  24. Who ARE these people? says:

In that cover photo with the hair, she would have made a great Breck girl. Who remembers?

  25. mayamae says:

I’ve always loved and rooted for Drew. Not judging, but Yikes! A Barrymore wine? It just seems a questionable decision for a woman who has struggled with addiction issues, and comes from a long line of notorious alcoholics. I despise wine, but I think I would have a hard time drinking it with Barrymore stamped on it. Sounds like a curse.

I re-watched Scream last night, and Drew was just adorable (even with that wig). The transition from silly/flirty, to unnerved, to terrified, was well done. She was the best part of the movie, IMO.

  26. Apsutter says:

I love Drew, always have. Just read her new book and I liked it but I was wishing for more during it. I’ve often felt like she reminded me of myself and I recently took the Myers-Briggs test and learned that she’s an ENFP like me! I like her outlook on life and I love the quote about realizing that you won’t burn bright all your life but it’s inevitable and it won’t diminish you.

  27. Antigone says:

Had to laugh at her comment about people being “literally” on fire. I’m so tired of the misuse of that word.

  28. Larelyn says:

Drew, La Jolie, and I were all born in the same year. I’ve always followed their careers because I felt I could relate somewhat. I wish I had myself as put-together as these women. I really admire them as role models and the type of woman/wife/mother/businesswoman/philanthropist I strive to be!

  29. Skyblue says:

I love Drew…I remember watching her on David Letterman one night a million years ago and she flashed him for his birthday. For whatever reason, it was so freaking funny. Definitely have a soft spot for her.

  30. Jag says:

You say “boring,” while I say “stable.”

I love that she is who she is now. She has been through a lot and it really shows that if people work on themselves, they can end up with a fantastic life.

Give me more boring celebrities so that the younger generation has more good role models from which to choose, please!

  31. SusanneToo says:

I’ve always liked her and just like with RDJ, hope her demons are locked away for good.
