Gwyneth Paltrow: ‘I was a mess in my 20s! I would never want to go back’

I was pleased that so many of you enjoyed that Gwyneth Paltrow post yesterday and that somehow, against all the odds, Gwyneth’s comments about “happiness” became a jumping-off point to discuss what makes individual women happy. What’s funny is that very few of us find happiness from Gwyneth’s pre-approved Happiness Tips. Those quotes came from Gwyneth’s exclusive interview with People Magazine, and wouldn’t you know, there’s even more! Some selected quotes:

Goop on her 20s versus her 40s: “I was a mess in my 20s! I would never want to go back. I’m so thankful to be where I am.” Calling her 40s “incredible,” Paltrow adds she would have loved it if her friends had informed her the best was yet to come. “I wish more women had told me that at 40 you sort of stop worrying about what other people think about you, and you come into yourself in the most phenomenal way. I think the 40s are such a gift, and I feel more beautiful now than I did 10 years ago or 20 years ago.”

She’s beautiful: “I think even though physically I don’t look like I did when I was 25, I feel beautiful because I feel like myself.”

She says she has bad hair days “all the time”: Paltrow is OK with her “crazy” mane, “My hair is like three different textures. I usually just leave it, and I’m like, ‘Whatever. I woke up like this. I don’t know what to tell you.’”

[From People]

Re: her messy 20s. I remember her 20s. I remember that moment (the ‘90s) when Gwyneth was the It Girl and everyone was obsessed with her. That moment made Gwyneth who she is today. That moment defined her and she’s still riding that moment. So while I believe that, looking back, she thinks she was messy back then, I do not believe her when she says “I would never want to go back.” She would go back in a heartbeat.

As for her hair… I don’t believe her. Not exactly. I think her hair is naturally wavy and naturally a lot darker, but she’s been frying it and bleaching it (her colorist hates her, btw) for so many years, her hair texture probably has changed over time. But Gwyneth’s answer to every hair dilemma seems to be “flat-iron it and do a center part.” Just like she did in the ‘90s. I would love to see her do beachy bedhead waves on a red carpet.

Last Goop-related item: last year, it was widely reported that Gwyneth and her business partner were obsessed with the idea of bringing the members-only, London-based Arts Club to LA. The NY Post says that they’re still working on it and the first “renderings of the club” have been “unveiled” already. Here’s something I didn’t know: the cost of a year’s membership is $2,000, and you can only get in if an existing member nominates you, which is a lot like how people used to become Academy members. One of the worst rules? NO CURSING. You have to spend that kind of money to hang out with snooty a—holes and you can’t even say the word “a—hole” in front of them.

She must have a bouquet of roses stuffed up her rear. It’s the only explanation I can come up with as to why her head is always up her ass.

I think it depends about the person. i sure hope things will get better because my 20s currently suck. But she is sucessful in her 40s. I wonder if she would think the same if she wasn’t.

I do believe she’s low maintenance when it comes to beauty. She always has the same hairstlye, she said she can’t do her own makeup and she even went to events with no makeup.
She was stunning when she was young and had darker hair.

I gets better. Trust me. I actually agree with a lot of what she says above. I would never go back to my 20s.

The good about your twenties: your butt, boobs and tummy look your best (for people of healthy weight.) You have more energy than you ever will, can get by on 4 hours of sleep, party all night and still function well the next day. Enjoy this decade but most of all think this way – when you’ll be older, what will you wish you had spent your time on?

The good about your forties: you know exactly who you are, need no drama, if you are in a relationship it’s a good one because you’ve already dealt with crazy/messy/hormone induced stuff. You have a family (if it’s what you want). You have finished your education, are happy with your career path and are busy with “adult” things – a home, vacations, good friends, family (you have either removed toxic members from your life, or made peace, or have reached a point where you see that your parents were right and have a great time with them now).

Not saying this is true for everybody, just my personal observations. I do miss the good stuff from my twenties. I wish I still had that figure:-) But I love everything I have now, and I wish I wasted less time on worrying, bad relationships, and more on personal development. (I went back to school and got my graduate degree at 29. Should have done so sooner.)

Well, I am belssed with a thyroid issue so I neither have a good body nor much energy. Amd that is what worries me the most about my forties – What if Im not goim to be happy with my career or my life in general? It feels like a time when you still have dreams but are too old to fullfil them.

      • Darbi says:

        @ Locke

Don’t be negative on yourself! 40s isnt too old to do anything. My auntie was left by her husband when she was 43. She only ever had her HS Diploma, and she was left with 3 kids in the house (one grown) and no education. She managed to go back to school and get her Bachelor’s and then her MDev. And then she became a pastor! This was all in the 1970s.

Life isnt over until you’re cold and dead in the ground.

The twisted part is, you usually look your tightest and best in your twenties, and you think you look awful. Then you grow up a bit, get in your thirties, feel a little more comfortable with who you are, and realize all those hot years were wasted thinking you were fat and ugly, when you weren’t in the slightest!! It’s so cruel. I didn’t know what I had when I had it.

So now in my thirties, when I start to get down on my body that has now given me my two kids, I try to think that someday in my fifties I’ll look back and wish I looked the way I do now. So I try to ease up on myself. It does get better!

She is so far up her own ass her nose is permanently stained brown. Her stylist has to bleach it just like her naturally super “blonde” straight hair.

I would go back to my 20s- heck I would go back to being a teen again if I could! I loved that time in my life. My early 30s have been lack luster.

  4. Annaloo. says:

Shut up and entertain me, monkey! 🙂

Actually, I think she still really cares what others think of her when she pokes her nose out of her bubble.

  5. Becky says:

Sounds like she’s compensating to me. I think she’s a sad, status obsessed mess now. And as for her hair, stop bleaching it. She’ll be dying it when she goes grey anyway.

  6. Rhiley says:

Ok, as a woman who is almost in her 40s, I am going to pay Goop a complement. I hate myself already but I am feeling nice today. Goop has great legs. I work out a lot and eat fairly decent. I have a pretty good figure for a woman almost in her 40s, certainly better than the figure I had in high school and college. But there is no way I could wear dresses that short. My thighs just don’t look anything like that, and it would not be flattering. But even with great thighs, Goop is still a real Hamptons/Malibu snooze.

  7. minx says:

I hate myself for agreeing with her because I wouldn’t go back to my 20s, either.
But she’s still an arrogant, bossy dipsh*t.

  8. Cee says:

She is older and more self absorbed. Lucky she has a lot of money because she is so smug and really not pretty.

  9. frivolity says:

Take each sentence that Gwynnie mutters. Translate it to the exact opposite of what she says. There – you have the truth.

  10. dr mantis toboggan says:

I fight a lifelong battle with my hair. I treat it, straighten it ( only ghd works) use Argan oil and another smoothing oil and I still end up looking like some kind of demented koala.
People at work ask if I’ve had a long day when I’ve just started my shift!
I thought about hairspray to smooth down the frizzy, any suggestions or miracle potions?

    • annaloo. says:

ocean or salty/softened water always seemed to knock my frizzy hair out for a couple of days bc our water is so hard in the west…but honestly, I don’t know your hair! What worked for me, may not do anything or may harm your hair. I’d take it to a professional so they can look at your hair type and recommend something. I wish you luck, hair frustrations are the worst .:-/

    • KiddVicious says:

Don’t hate me for saying this, but Jennifer Aniston’s hair products are great. My hair has never looked better. Thicker, stronger, no frizz. I have fine hair so I use product for that, but I’ve also used product for frizzy hair and it didn’t make my fine hair limp and flat, but tamed the frizz. I’ve been using it for about a year now and my hair keeps getting better.

  11. Catherine says:

Possibly the only think I’ve ever agreed with her on: my twenties sucked!

  12. Grant says:

I second the beachy, bed-head look! I’d love to see her try a little Jennifer Aniston circa 2003.
