Viola Davis recalls Jared Leto’s unusual gift for his Suicide Squad co-stars

22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

In “odd actors behaving oddly” news, Jared Leto really got into his role as the Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, which involved him giving his co-stars some crazy “gifts”. Most cast members get t-shirts or crew jackets, but Jared, playing the Joker, went a little crazy with the gift giving.

Back in June, when the film was in production, Jared sent a rat to Margot Robbie (which is either still living with Margot or was adopted by director Guillermo Del Toro), a mysterious parcel to Jay Hernandez (a photo of which he posted to his Instagram, calling it a “glimpse into the mind of a mad man”) and bullets to Will Smith. (Will never even met Jared during filming.) Viola Davis, speaking to Vanity Fair, revealed the oddest gift of all, a dead pig. She tells the magazine, “He did some bad things, Jared Leto did. He gave some really horrific gifts. He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. And that was our introduction into Jared Leto.”

The Oscar-nominated actress wondered what I think we all would in a similar situation. “Now I’m terrified this is a person thinking, ‘Is he crazy?’ But the second part was, ‘Oh s–t. I gotta have my stuff together.’” Umm…ew? I don’t get the correlation between a dead pig and someone who doesn’t have their s–t together unless it’s some kind of method acting thing, but hopefully the pig made for a nice BBQ dinner for cast and crew.

I am all for actors really getting into character, but this might be a little overboard, don’t you think? I’m kind of tired of these Shia LaBeouf/Joaquin Phoenix/James Franco/Jared Leto whackadoodle publicity stunts. But, to Jared’s credit, it did get people talking about the movie. I saw the trailer before Deadpool, and the jury’s out for me. Could be great, could be terrible. I think I was so excited to see Deadpool that I didn’t pay the trailer much mind. We will see if the hype about this flick is deserved when it’s released on August 5.

Pfft. What a wimp. British public figures do much more interesting things with dead pigs. Nobody spent days punning films and books with dead pigs on Twitter cos of Jared Leto.

(In seriousness: he’s just one of life’s unsavoury creeps, isn’t he?)

    • Mia4s says:

Ha! Fair point. If he was really dedicated he would have tried to top the British PM.

Leto’s coming across as pathetic. He knows most people will prefer Heath Ledger so he’s overdoing it. Mostly he just seems like an immature, insecure jerk.

      • Jag says:

Exactly! He’s as bad as Kanye, wanting attention for his “art.”

“Oh no, here comes Leto. Everyone act scared and creeped out!”

He’s exhausting. I would much rather hear about the other actors in the film.

Hey Leto, it’s just a movie. Get over yourself.

    • Tara says:

That sounds like the Black Mirror pilot!

i do respect people who are committed to their craft, be it headstone-masoning or broccoli-washing, basket weaving, cartouche-making, or acting. i even have some admiration to the current world record holder of the longest poop. i think it is commendable that people take their things seriously. however, is there such a thing as trying too hard, to the point of harrassing other people for it. if your cast member feels disturbed or distressed rather than amused, isn’t that going too far. surely, no one’s right supersedes other people’s feelings.

it’s not real, Jared! or Shia! or whoever.

i also have a lot of respect for someone who can act like flipping a switch without a sense of “method acting” behind it. it’s amazing to watch.

    • Belle says:

Isn’t the talent suppose to be having the ability to become the character when required and turning it off when it’s not without all this 24/7 ? I get method acting in a way but it kind of strays from the concept of acting, not forgetting who are.

      • lou says:

Some actors I’ve worked with (I’m in theatre) use method as an excuse to be a douche.

One time, a method guy played a ghost in a play and refused to speak to every other actor except the actress who played his sister, because that’s who the ghost communicated with onstage.
Like, he wouldn’t even talk to say hello or reply to a simple question. AND he used to invade personal space like it was no one’s deal.

Doesn’t stop him from sounding the same in every role. I think method’s an ego trip for people like that.

  3. Word says:

    creep

  4. Eleonor says:

    Gosh he is exhausting.

  5. Veronica says:

Am I the only one put off by the fact that he gave the only two black cast members bullets and a dead animal?

  6. Lucy2 says:

    I’m sorry, that’s just stupid.
I get that everyone has a different process, but that’s over the line, and affected his coworkers. Just ACT!

  7. Esther says:

Jared Leto thinks Jared Leto is the greatest artist of all time.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Take that back Esther! Leo DiCaprio is the greatest artist of all time, he ate raw liver & lived inside a dead animal for months. I wonder if those two have ever met or if they’ll try to outdo each other.

  8. Leah says:

I know hes wants to be a method actor and all. But i don’t think Pachino and De Niro and those guys went around dropping dead rats at other actors tables during their hey day. I know someone who worked with Day Lewis when he was playing a pretty nasty character. They said he was in character on set when he wasn’t actually shooting scenes too, for instance he only spoke in the accent of the character but they also said he was a really nice guy. ( my friend only ever met Day Lewis when he was” in character”). So i don’t think this aggressive approach is how the great method actors operate.

    • Kip says:

Yeah for the bunch exemplified by Jared Leto, method acting is just carte blanche to be a douche canoe. You never see them method acting into some empathy, or heightened awareness of intersectionality or privilege, just “method acting” in to ass-hatitude.

      • Chinoiserie says:

I feel this could be just his and some PR person’s plan to create publicity for the film and make him seem more like Joker to get him out of Ledger’s shadow before the film opens.. His antics have gotten a lot of media attention.

    • Tiffany says:

Yeah. That is how DDL rolls in his roles. He will be asked to be addressed by the characters name and will have stationary with the characters name on it and leave thank you notes for cast and crew. If it is too intense, he would leave the set to avoid being an ahole to anyone. Not even the same as the BS these other clowns spew.

  9. lila fowler says:

Will Smith and Jared never met during filming? Hmmmm. Makes me wonder if those rumors of the Joker only existing in flashbacks in S.S. were true. Because he clearly is not a current member of the Skwad if he never met Will.

    • Lucy says:

He never met Jared as in, he’s only seen him in character, and never as himself, at least not until after filming wrapped. His words.

  10. morc says:

    Stunt queen shenanigans.

  11. FingerBinger says:

Jared’s antics aren’t why people are talking about this film. The buzz is because it’s a marvel film with a fan base.

  12. Kitten says:

Damn Viola looks so hot in that black dress.

  13. hey-ya says:

….it didnt get much approval the first time round but I just love that beatiful midnight blue & silver stars gown Viola is wearing..

  14. Marty says:

He’s always been a douche. Now it looks like he’s upgraded to mega douche.

  15. Needlehole says:

Jared Leto is a creep. Period.
Viola Davis looks absolutely gorgeous though. I love her in grey. What a knockout.

  16. SM says:

Despite his douch personality, Leto is a good actor. He deserved all the praise he got for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

  17. belakali says:

Isn’t he a vegan?! I’m a method actor, too – but as a vegan, I would have used my creativity to find something just as shocking, but less severe…

    • Tara says:

Yeah I’m most confused by the dead pig, in light of his veganism. Unless he was all “HERE’s your bacon, carnivores.”
