Brie Larson labeled ‘most egregious blow off’ for skyping to accept honor: fair?

Brie Larson during an appearance on ABC's 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'
Brie Larson is the odds-on favorite to win best actress at the Oscars this Sunday. (We’ll have coverage of the Academy Awards that night and fashion the next morning as usual!) She’s swept all the major awards this season and will likely be taking home a statue for her nuanced performance in Room. I thought she nailed that part. She played a beat-down depressed kidnapped mom who did what she needed to do to save her child. Jacob Tremblay’s performance was incredible too and I liked how the film didn’t shy away from making him annoying at times like a normal kid, or from having Brie’s character seem fed up and tired. As Kaiser put it to me, they seemed like a real mother and child in terrible circumstances.

Brie Larson arrives on a flight to Los Angeles International Airport

Anyway I wanted to cover Brie after seeing these photos of her looking like a model strolling through the airport. She’s wearing a t-shirt from Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Vietnam, if my Googling skills are to be trusted, and she’s rocking what I’m pretty sure is a handmade Vietnamese jacket, judging from this similar jacket I found on Pinterest. She paired it with skinny jeans and some awesome platform shoes which look vaguely like Doc Martens but probably aren’t. I bet they’re steel toes. I’m going to steal some of this look. You know whom she looks like here? Diane Kruger.

The Hollywood Reporter has a funny story about how Brie blew off an award a the Santa Barbara Film Festival to appear on Jimmy Kimmel. They call it the “most egregious blow off of an awards body” and write that Brie “agreed to be honored Feb. 8 at a Santa Barbara Film Festival gala but instead Skyped herself in. She was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that night.” I don’t know, I’m inclined to give her a pass. She Skyped in and it’s possible she got overbooked by her people and didn’t realize it. Plus I watched her Jimmy Kimmel interview and she was funny and self deprecating. She told a story about how she ended up playing football in a celebrity match a few years ago and had no idea what she was doing. I bet she’s charmed Oscar voters at events just by being herself, she’s funny!

Also, Brie has been open with the press about the fact that she’s estranged from her dad. The Daily Mail ambushed Brie’s father, who works as a chiropractor in Sacramento, CA, and he said “It’s my daughter and I love her to death. I don’t want to say more. This is my daughter’s career. This is her life, this is her thing. I’m very proud of her.” He couldn’t help but gush a little after that though and admitted that he’s seen Room three times. I’m kind of sad for their family, whatever happened. I get the impression that Brie isn’t going to be a tabloid staple though no matter how much her career takes off, and I hope it does. She’ll probably be like Amy Adams in that we see her at events and she keeps getting work but we don’t gossip about her much.

People has a video explaining how Brie got her last name. She was born Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers but called herself “Larson” after her favorite American Girl doll, Kirsten Larson. I bet it was easier for her to have different name from her dad too.

Update: as many of you have pointed out, Brie has been busy filming Skull Island in Vietnam with Tom Hiddleston. Here are some photos from her Instagram.

That outfit makes me want to go to Vietnam. She looks SO COMFY.

  2. Bridget says:

She was probably already booked on Kimmel. Maybe they accepted thinking that they could make both work. Brie’s been extremely professional through the entire awards season.

    • Mia4s says:

She filmed Kimmel early in the day and then producers on that Kong movie told her they needed her to fly back earlier than expected. I remember this story…I actually think I read it in the Hollywood Reporter! Side-eyeing them if that’s the case for making it look like something else.

  3. nina says:

If she agreed to be there, that’s a shitty thing to do then and doesn’t get a pass.

  4. Shoe says:

phong nha viet nam is very beautiful, she s there with tom hilderton to film that skull island movie, cant wait for it

    • Dingo says:

Cool – I went last year during my trip to Vietnam and it was really beautiful. Not a big tourist place – and that was one of the best parts of it – and the history there is really powerful.

  5. InvaderTak says:

That seems like a fairly major brush off, with the “industry” people anyway.. I don’t buy that it was a schedule conflict. It’s not a major awards ceremony, but she still agreed to be there. That was really rude to RSVP and then blow them off for something else. I think it was insulting to then Skype her acceptance speech. So, basically I disagree that this wasn’t a big deal. This comes off as fame chasing and rude. Not important enough to refuse Kimmel, but she still wants to have a presence in the room? No. If you’re going to blow someone or something off do it and own it. Don’t half arse an appearance. Wonder what the industry people there think about her now. They’re the ones that get her work; might be better next time to do some arse kissing instead of late night talk shows.

    • Anon says:

What’s insulting about Skype her acceptance speech. And promote her movie on Kimmel it’s part of her job and not chase chasing, it is means, so people who have no idea what the film was about can see the trailer.

      • InvaderTak says:

I guess it’s my old fashioned sense of etiquette. Like I said, if you blow something off don’t look back. For example: If you blow off your quiet friend’s movie night in favor of an all night raver with the popular crowd-and said friend knows where you’re going and what you’re doing-don’t call the quiet friend while you’re putting on your makeup to ask what the rest of them will be watching that night. You already ditched for something you’d obviously rather be doing, don’t act like you’re sorry you couldn’t make it to your original commitment by calling. When dealing in a real world individual to individual situation, potentially hurtful to the person you blew off. I was just raised in an “honor your commitments” kinda way. My angle was from the industry people’s prospective; the HR is an industry mag. Kimmel doesn’t get her work or awards, the industry people do. Just ask Eddie Redmayne. The fact that she/her people didn’t give a legit excuse to the santa b people makes it sound like a brush off in favor of Kimmel. I’m just sayin’, I think she and/or her people made a bad choice.

      • Plewas says:

Because she was set to appear in person. It may be her people’s fault and not hers personally, but it’s still an eff-up regardless.

      • Bridget says:

If you notice, someone above thread pointed out that Kimmel films during the day, and it was actually King Kong that called her in to come back to work early and that was what caused her to miss Santa Barbara.

  6. Kiki says:

This is why I like her. I love the fact that she is funny and self depreciating. Unlike Alicia Vikander who pesonality is just bland, I think Brie Larson is a down to earth girl who doesn’t take herself serious and I love her

Also, the differnce between BreLar and JLaw is that she is actually funny rather than JLaw who is it just trying to be funny.

    • CornyBlue says:

Did you literally need to bring down two other girls just to put her up ?

    • Anon says:

You can’t back away from any opportunity to talk about Vikander.

      • Kiki says:

@Anon Yes I just can’t back away from an opportunity to say that, because unlike most people who don’t like actress to be e relatable, needs to get a life. I live my actors and actresses to be themselves, like a human being should. Brie Larson laught at herself and unlike certain way actresses who doesn’t know how to talk and to some of time open up should learn a thing or two abput how to talk.

    • Jbap says:

Brie is great – such a talent. I love her style, and she comes across so well.

And J-Law doesn’t ‘try’ to be funny: she is very funny. How many other actresses can you name with multiple compilations of their wisecracks uploaded onto Youtube?

      • Kiki says:

So you are saying that both Jlaw and BrieLar are actually funny? Then if that’s the case ten different stroke for different folks. The point is I really like Brie Larson and I think she is a very talented actress. She is just as cool as Cate Blanchet.

    • cd3 says:

I like all three. I think Jennifer and Brie just have different senses of humor. Jennifer’s is more of a toilet humor – maybe that’s just not your thing – but she’s certainly very likeable. As for Alicia – I wouldn’t say she’s devoid of personality. I’ve seen a few talk show clips where she’s doing shots, singing Scandinavian drinking songs, talking about the crayfish festivals there, etc. She seems like a good sport.

  7. tracking says:

I agree, we don’t know how her people handled this scheduling. She deserves the Oscar. Her performance was so good, and the movie was wonderful–the only one this year that has stayed with me.

  8. Nicole says:

Seriously? Celebs get overbooked and a small awards show is definitely going to take a back seat to a live appearance. At least she skyped in. I bet tons of celebs didn’t even do that much.
Also this is her first awards season…I’m sure her people are working overtime to keep her schedule somewhat sane. They may have made a mistake. I mean we don’t need a Jlaw situation where she was ill her winning season because of back to back promo, movie filming, awards season and reshoots in the span of 4 months. That was insane for her

  9. CornyBlue says:

I doubt she will ever be famous but she will always be a steady actress. She just does not have enough charisma to pull off stardom. Also awards season is long and exhaustive and she might have been booked on the same day and she decided to go to one which would give her a bigger platform. Give her a break.

    • Kiki says:

@Cornerblue i actually agree with you. People should get off her ass. At least she Skype. Some people just can’t win.

  10. Emma says:

I dunno…Kimmel tapes in the afternoon right? She would’ve gone straight from the Luncheon to the show, then (just going on her pattern for the award season) likely straight to the airport to get on a plan back to the Skull Island set. I would give her a pass. She likely accepted the invitation before she knew the extent of the schedule for Skull island.

    • Dara says:

That’s my thinking too. Either the Skull Island producers wanted her back early or her team got over-enthusiastic about scheduling and probably thought she could get to SB and back again to LA to catch a flight to Oz. When they realized that wasn’t going to work, she Skyped in. It sucks for the film festival, but I don’t blame her for putting her current project ahead of them. I’m guessing there would have been hell to pay if she had missed that flight. Big studio productions probably get testy when one of their leads isn’t on set when they’re supposed to be – even if they are nominated for an Oscar.

  11. Plewas says:

She comes off twee to me. It’s grating.

  12. ichsi says:

Meeeep! Her name is Sidonie? It’s my name! Do you have any idea how rarely I find people with the same name? Yussssss! Win the Oscar and make us all proud! hehe

  13. Deedee says:

    She’s ok in my book.

  14. SwanLake says:

I find her bland, and think her acting in Room is overrated. I didn’t see anything special in her performance.

  15. lila fowler says:

I don’t think anyone really cared about that Santa Barbara Film Festival this year. It seemed so lame.
