British actress Lily Cole turned heads on the Oscar red carpet wearing a silver Vivienne Westwood gown made completely out of recycled plastic bottles. She accessorized the look with gold bracelets and rings and strappy gold heels, with a floral embellishments. She also rocked electric blue fingernails. The dress is a part of a project called Red Carpet Green Dress. The initiative, creating ethically made gowns, was spearheaded by director James Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron. Do-goodery aside, I do like this dress. It’s a little edgy with the uneven hemline, the bodice is simple yet elegant and the silver shade complements Lily’s pale skin. I don’t know about pairing the dress with those gold shoes though (not to say I didn’t like the shoes, I am just not a mixed metallic kind of girl). Lily’s hair and makeup are on point as well.
Also hitting the red carpet in a sustainable gown was Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Sansa Stark herself, who spilled a major season 6 spoiler when talking to E!, turned heads in a gorgeous, figure-hugging pale green gown by Galvan (also part of the Red Carpet Green Dress project) with a slit showing off her legs and strappy silver heels by Christian Louboutin. She accessorized the simple, yet elegant gown with diamond and emerald drop earrings and subtle bling on her neck, wrist and finger, all from Tiffany & Co. Her hair was down, side swept with waves. The gown gave off an old school, Hollywood glam vibe, which matched the festivities perfectly. My only complaint was with the back of the gown. It looks like it’s not zipped all the way up, or that they had to make some last-minute alterations (the white fabric in the center of her back doesn’t gel with the rest of the gown). I do love that Lily and Sophie wore sustainable gowns and I admire the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative. I’m thinking we will see more of these gowns in the future.
Entertainment reporter Maria Menounous sparkled in a silver gown from Project Runway alum Christian Siriano. The designer collaborated on the custom design of the dress with Maria as part of of Stella Artois and Water.org’s “Buy a Lady a Drink” campaign, and the beaded design of the gown was meant to emulate glass-etched chalices. I am a big Christian fan and this gown is quite stunning. The beading is exquisite and the off-the-shoulder bodice and form fitting design are very flattering. Maria paired the gown with Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. The gown is going to be auctioned off for the “Buy a Lady a Drink” campaign. If I were Maria, I’d put a bid on it right now. It’s gorgeous. I am not crazy about her hair though. She was going for “textured waves with a beachy feel” but it looks more like “didn’t rinse out all of her conditioner.” I would have opted for an updo, but besides that, I love everything from the neck down.
E! correspondent Giuliana Rancic pulled off not one but 2 winning looks on the red carpet. She began the evening, covering arrivals for the network’s Countdown to the Red Carpet in an elegantly structured gold gown from Azzi & Osta, a picture of which she posted to her Twitter feed. I think this gown is lovely. I like the delicate lace mesh at the neck and this dress just screams “Oscar” to me (could be the color, but it’s just flat-out glam.) She accessorized the gown with Rene Caovilla shoes and Forevermark Diamonds jewelry. Giuliana had teased prior to the awards that she was going for a “softer look” and I think her makeup looks great and her updo works well with the gown.

Giulana then hit the red carpet herself in a form-fitting white crepe from Georges Chakra’s 2016 Spring Summer Couture Collection. From the front, it is nice, but doesn’t make much of a statement. The back, however, is a different story. I actually made an audible “Ooh!” when I saw the plunging back embellished with subtle pastel embroidery and the train. (I am a sucker for a nice train.) Giuliana strapped on another pair of Rene Caovilla shoes and Forevermark Diamonds provided her bracelet, rings and gorgeous bejeweled hoop earrings. My only complaint (and I’m sure it was due to some sort of product placement agreement) was the bulky black Limited Edition de Grisogono Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 watch she was sporting. It is kind of distracting. I guess if you’re a veteran of E!’s Fashion Police, you know what you need to wear to not get called out as a red carpet “don’t.” I definitely think both of these looks place Giuliana firmly in the “do” column.

Sansa’s dress was my favorite after Saorsie’s and Margot’s.
I also think she is the most strikingly beautiful young actress working in Hollywood right now – look at that hair!
Those are plastic bottles?! The dress is nice.
Sophie looks really good. Very classic, it suits her look.
I have a pair of workout pants made of plastic bottles as well – they were a bit expensive, but super cool. I really like them. And I really like this sustainable fashion thing – I hope it becomes a trend
lily cole’s dress is gorgeous!
i don’t like sophie’s dress though, galvan has been worn a lot recently, but because all designs are similar it feels like i’ve seen it all before.
I feel like livinia firth did a better job with the green concept (and seems more sincere about it) I guess James Cameron has more pull for actresses overall.
Ranic’s gown feels like the budget version of Cate Blanchetts famous butterfly gown. So yea…not impressed with any of these.
Also, Rancic’s arms are still scary thin.
So beautiful, recycled or not.
I thought Livinia Firth’s recycled dress was kind of ridiculous. Surely, the MOST green thing she could have done would be to just wear one of the dresses her dress was made from. Destroying multiple dresses to make a single, brand new, “green” dress just seems so silly and wasteful!
Really disliked Lily Cole’s nail colour. It made the dress look cheap.
I really like the nail color, but I wish she would have had a bolder lip. She looks so washed out with that dramatic dress.
Gah, that watch – so ugly/distracting!
It looks like she forgot to take it off. If she knew she had to wear it, she should have gone for more black (at least black accents). In the top photo it looks like she’s trying to hide it!
Lily Cole has the face of a 1920s flapper.
She does. I prefer an interesting face to a merely pretty one and hers as always been so memorable to me.
She does have interesting petite features. For some reason I feel like she would make a perfect Alice, in Alice and wonderland.
Yes…. I get the Alice vibe from her, too!
I agree: Lily Cole would make a great Alice in Wonderland! She has that enchanted, big eyed, demure, little-girl-lost look–a sort of an ethereal “old fashioned” appearance and demeanor. I like her dress too.
That is a lot kinder comparison than I immediately made. She is very beautiful but my honest first reaction was to ask “Is she the girl who played the Child of the Forest character in Game of Thrones?”. It didn’t help the association in my mind when I scrolled down and saw Sophie Turner being discussed too.

Sophie wins this post. I don’t mind the white in the back – it works somehow. I wonder what her dress was made of?
I love Lily’s gown. I also really like Guliana’s first gown. It fits her great and I enjoy the colour and the structure of the gown.
Gulianna, girl….the back of that dress!!!!!!!! 10/10
Wow! That beaded gown is gorgeous!
LOVE THESE REDHEADS!!!!! Sophie Turner is rather BEAUTIFUL, no?
They’ve been doing red carpet “green” dresses for years now, and it has yet to catch on.
Livia Firth spent an entire Oscar season wearing green dresses – when Colin won his award.
Are the shoes Westwood as well? The SHOES are what I covet.
The most sustainable thing to do is wear an outfit more than once, like normal people do. Or if they can’t cope with that – buy vintage.
I want those gold sandals Lily Cole is wearing! Her look is fab. Love it!
