Rachel McAdams in satin August Getty at the Oscars: beautiful or budget?

wenn23568645

Inevitably, there will be at least one person invited to the Oscars as a nominee or presenter who changes frocks after the ceremony, and inevitably, I will find myself thinking, “why didn’t they wear the party dress to the Oscars?” This year, that person is Rachel McAdams. Rachel wore this green satin August Getty Atelier gown which was underwhelming, to say the least. And then she looked absolutely fantastic in a sparkly pink gown at the Vanity Fair party. Why didn’t she wear the pink gown to the Oscars? Because the August Getty gown was not great. Great color, for sure. Great idea? Perhaps. But the satin looks super-cheap and it was wrinkled the second she stepped onto the carpet.

When will Mark Ruffalo be the “Leo,” you know? When will it be his turn?

Eddie Redmayne & Hannah Bagshawe wore his-and-hers McQueen. I like that Eddie was sort of low-key this year, and even he said (before the Oscars) that it was Leo’s year. And I get that Hannah is pregnant and probably not feeling all of these long-ass flights to LA, but would it kill this lady to wear some makeup at the Oscars?

    I like both Rachel’s dresses! She’s beautiful.
Also, love me some Mark RUffalo! He and his wife are one of my fav showbiz couples!

  2. Lucy2 says:

I like the idea and the green color of Rachel’s, but the wrinkled fabric ruined it. The pink dress is much prettier on her.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, it has a stunning silhouette and color but the fabric is bad.

The pink dress is lovely, but I wish she let down her hair with it.

    • I Choose Me says:

Yup. Satin is such unforgiving fabric no matter how in shape you are.

    • Kimmy says:

Me too!!! Love, love, love the idea of her dress, the simple hair and accessories, and I appreciate the fact that her nipples were well covered and not like headlights….with that fabric it really could have gone trashy fast. But ugh, those wrinkles ruined it all.

      The pink is fab though.

    • Carol says:

Yes, the wrinkled fabric completely ruined the look. Otherwise, it would it have been fantastic – loved the color and cut.

Both the wives knocked it out of the park. They looked better than most of the women celebrities.

  3. mila says:

    beautiful, very 90s.

  4. Marianne says:

Satin is the worst. It ends up looking kind of wrinkly. I think the colour and cut though were really nice on her.

  5. Goats on the Roof says:

Rachel should have worn the pink gown to the ceremony. The green satin looks cheap, and I don’t care for halter neck styles.

Mark Ruffalo is fetching as always.

If Hannah doesn’t wanna wear makeup, why comment on it? She is a pretty lady as she is, and if she is comfortable without makeup, more power to her.

    • Lisa says:

Yeah I agree about Hannah. Let Hannah be Hannah!

    • OrigialTessa says:

Agreed about Hannah. She’s not famous. Her makeup, or lack thereof affects no one. She’s not trying to land parts, or endorsements, or covers of magazines. Leave her alone.

    • Rose says:

Thank you! She looks amazing without the makeup. Love it.

    • Jsilly4e says:

I agree. I personally would love to wear makeup but for some reason I can no longer wear anything. I’m allergic to anything but argan oil on my face. I can’t wear stuff that says hypoallergenic or even if it’s made for hypersensitive skin. And I Sjögren’s and have the driest skin ever and dry eyes and dry mouth and dry lips that I can’t wear anything on my lips except argan or Shea butter and on a good day Fresh Sugar clear lip balm. And I still break out in hives. Ugh. So if she has beautiful skin and can get away with minimal makeup I say go for it!

      • Farhi says:

I haven’t been able to wear any mascara for the last 20 years. It irritates my eyes. Clinique is slightly better than Lancôme/ Ester Lauder and other brands. I can do 30 min in Clinique )).
I am convinced they changed the formula some years ago and started adding something I can’t tolerate. I put light make up on my face but no mascara at all.

  6. Luciana says:

Both dress are forgettable. WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE HAIR? Rachel used to have an amazing hair. WHY?

  7. Lindy79 says:

That material on Rachel’s dress is awful.

I know it’;s not the done thing to say anything about a pregnant woman thats even remotely negative but as someone who’s over 5 months myself I’m gonna. Yes she could be feeling utterly pants and hate the whole shebang, but I’d relish the chance to have someone else do my hair and put a bit of make up on me and make me feel more human. She’s not me though and doesn’t strike me though as someone who wears make up ever really so suppose why should she change?

    • Ethelreda says:

Are you talking about Hannah Bagshawe? What always strikes me about her is her ”Can we go now?” demeanour. Kind of odd, seeing as she more or less gave up her career to be Eddie’s red carpet arm candy.

  8. CornyBlue says:

Eddie looks good. Hnnah is pretty and f she does not want to wear makeup she will not wear make up. Chill.
    McAdams looked good IMO.

  9. Bridget says:

I thought McAdams looked fantastic! And the TV camera didn’t pick up the wrinkles in the satin, it looked like it fell perfectly.

And that shade of pink is heinous.

    • mia girl says:

Seeing first the photographs of her on the red carpet, I was disappointed not by the dress but by the wrinkles.

But you are right… On TV they really weren’t noticeable. McAdams looked so beautiful. The color and halter top worked for her.

      • Bridget says:

On TV it fit her like a glove. It looks like it was perfectly made for her.

However, I’ll also say I am not a fan of the train. That seemed ridiculous and like it would be destroyed by the end of the night.

    • Diana B says:

That pink is too light for her complexion. If she would have worn it on the carpet she would be criticised right now for it washing her out.

    • Marny says:

I agree. I didn’t like it at first and still think she could have chosen much better but it actually looked gorgeous on her and her head was to die for- the earring and eye makeup really took it up a notch.

  10. shannon says:

    Love Rachel. Forever and always.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hannah with makeup. She’s beautiful though and even though she might look better w/make up, she pulls off the fresh face well.

  11. OSTONE says:

Rachel for worst dressed. Not that the satin dress was the worst offender cough Heidi klum cough, but with all her possibilities, the beautiful face, she chose that dress? In satin? That hair? Love you girl but BYE.

    • Ethelreda says:

Yup. As an Oscar nominee, she would have had designers competing to dress her, and she chose THAT? And how is it that all these top stylists don’t know what everyone else knows – that outside of the bedroom, satin never looks good?

  12. Kate says:

Rachel definitely should have worn the party dress to the awards ceremony. The green dress is ill fitting and sloppy looking. She’s one of my favorite actresses, and I will always think she’s talented and beautiful.

    • vauvert says:

Same here. While pink is never my favourite colour, it looked way better than that boring, wrinkled green gown. I love her and was so dissapoined by that look!

  13. Josefina says:

Yeah that pink dress is so much better. She looks like a Barbie.

  14. ell says:

satin wrinkles, it’s a big no no. the other dress is just ok though.

redmayne’s wife has the same face my dog makes when she realises we’re going to the vet. she’s never happy at awards.

  15. QQ says:

Rachel is so so so so beautiful so beautiful so that’s why that Green Satin dress hurts deeply, pink party dress is really not all that much better tbh she is too pretty and now major to be saddled with all these sad clothes

Also I Loved actually what Mark Ruffalo’s wife wore and Kudos to him for giving the OscarsSoWhite blurb righhhhtt before broadcast started

  16. serena says:

I can’t wait for Mark Ruffalo to win the Oscars next, or at least to get more recognition for his work. He’s great.

  17. Crumpet says:

Eddie and his wife look like they could be siblings. Genetic attraction at work there.

Rachel was stunning in pink and awkward in the green satin. Pity.

  18. Karen says:

The pink dress would get comparisons to gwenyth’s oscar win. It’s the same top half design and color.

  19. SamiHami says:

I don’t see why Hannah needs to wear make up. She looks lovely. Some people just don’t like to wear make up.

Like my mom once said when someone told her that she “must” wear make up, “Why? I’m not that ugly.”

  20. Mrs. Darcy says:

Mark Ruffalo’s wife’s dress is really cool, I dig it. His blue jacket is clashing with it though, he should have just worn black. I am bored by both of Rachel’s dresses, I can only imagine the red carpet choice was based on colour/thinking there would be lots of other pale shimmery dresses so the green would stand out more. It’s not a good cut across the hips and is wrinkly. I have less issue with Hannah’s no makeup makeup than her hair, which is hanging in her face and obscuring the best part of her dress.

  21. Lucy says:

I like the idea better than the execution. While I wouldn’t go as far as putting her on a Worst Dressed list, it still disappoints me because I think Rachel deserves nothing but good fashion. As for Hannah…seriously, guys? Had she been posing and grinning, many people here would be shredding her to pieces for daring to want attention. She looks perfectly fine to me.

  22. eribra says:

I love the green dress! Ok not the satin but everything else was perfect. The color, the cut, that halter neck-she is giving me some shoulder envy. My favorite of the night

  23. anne says:

ew. i like Rachel and I guess there’s something refreshingly modern about this look. it’s a stark, fresh line and the color is great. but, it’s. . . unflattering. there’s no shape to the dress. it’s hangs on her body, it doesn’t define her. the material looks a bit cheap. maybe it just photographs badly. and the slit is a bit high. it doesn’t move well as she walks.

is anyone else concerned that Rachel is missing her window? I thought she would be more established by now. Did she peak with the Notebook?

    • John says:

she is everywhere nowadays, and i always blame ryan gosling for slowing down her career. look at eva mendes, she hasn’t had a film in ages. something off about that guy

  24. felixswan2 says:

I love the deep green color of Rachel’s dress, but I don’t like the cut. In photos of her showing her side, she has so much “side boob” and it feels tacky. I usually love her though.

  25. Farhi says:

I don’t like any of the dresses with the long trains. I think they make a dress look shapeless. Not to mention the SO of the person or some poor assistant is always crawling on the floor around to arrange the train for the photos or pick it up . It just doesn’t look good.

  26. Andrea says:

I actually think the opposite—the pink is too light and washes her out. I love the green on her especially with her new hair color!

  27. Mmtahoe says:

On TV Rachel’s dress was gorgeous, and her body is really showing results of workouts. And WHY has no one mentioned the back of her gown? It was stunning!!

  28. What's inside says:

Yep, I agree the pink should have been the red carpet dress and the after party dress as well. That green bag that she has on does no one any favors.

  29. Anare says:

Rachel’s dress looks a little skeevy. Color is great but it’s too flimsy, ill fitting, don’t like the train. Icky. The pink dress is pretty, kind of boring though. Love Mark Ruffalo. He always seems to be having fun.

  30. Bonnie says:

You guys, seriously. Regina George only wears pink on Wednesdays.

  31. siri says:

It’s the material that ruins the look for me. The colour is beautiful on her. But I think she looks much better in the pink one.

  32. caitie says:

Hannah is always wearing makeup. It’s just subtle and soft. Maybe she thinks as she is Eddie’s wife and not a famous actress she doesn’t want to overshadow him or look like she is trying too hard next to all these famous beauties on the red carpet? Not that she isn’t pretty. Or maybe it is her style! I love Rachel in the green and pink but agree pink was the knockout. She is so fit looking.
