The new, all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ trailer is here: love it or hate it?

GB1

Much like the new reports of The Thomas Crowne Affair remake, I didn’t really need a remake/redo/reimagining of Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters is a classic comedy film, and it’s a stand-alone piece of comedy/genius filmmaking. But much like the Thomas Crowne thing, I’m okay with the remake if they do it correctly, with the right people. And I think this Ghostbusters redux was done well, with great people. The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. Three SNL veterans and one of the biggest comediennes working today (McCarthy). So… I’m happy. The trailer was just released and it looks really cute:

My first thought is that they’re really aiming for a kid-friendly demo. Not, like, little-little kids, but this will probably be fun for a 10-year-old, I would think. Mostly, I just love that four brilliantly funny women get to be in a movie and they all have great roles and they all get to be funny. Also: Chris Hemsworth is apparently the “ditzy secretary” or something. Which I think is a great move for his career.

Will totally go see it. If you’re gonna remake it, do it like that! Also I had some FEELINGS when Chris Hemsworth busted down that door…

  2. Pinky says:

The trailer? Kinda funny! And who can help but smile when that theme comes on? Leslie is hilarious too. I just might watch…..

    • Pinky says:

Upon further reflection, I gotta say I’m disappointed that the lone black person is the street/ignorant person and not a scientist…thirty years later. Might skip it after all.

      • Alarmjaguar says:

I had exactly the same thought…

      • Scal says:

Yea. This was my reaction as well. Imagine if she had been the dorky scientists and Melissa McCarthy had been the urban/street person. That would have been a nice change for once.

      • Jaime says:

Ah yeah but they are playing the actors roles from 30 years ago. Her role is replacing the character who wasn’t a scientist and had street smarts.

      • jinni says:

Yeah, I am not happy about that either. If they could’t make her a scientist, couldn’t they have at least made her a amateur paranormal investigator or a medium, while also being streetwise.

      • Patricia says:

I agree with you that it’s played out for the one black person to be the “street smart” person. However if they wanted the black character to be a scientist they would have had to cast someone besides Leslie Jones, who has one note: screaming like a street person.
She is exhausting to me. She literally does one thing: yell and scream. She can not act. She ruins every skit she is in on SNL and when she comes on Weekend Update it’s the same screaming shtick every time.

I admit she hit a genuine laugh out of me the first time I saw her. But then I realized that that is all she does. I think she will bring this whole movie down a bit.

      • Yup, Me says:

        Same thought here. meh :/

      • luffy says:

thats exactly what i was thinking. the three white women are incredibly smart scientists and the one black woman is just a rando off the street who says funny slang phrases. ok…

      • Mixtape says:

Yes, that was my immediate reaction, too.

I love the comedic talents of each of these women and was super excited for the trailer but… it’s not as funny as I expected. Oh well, I will go see it anyway to support casting like this.

      • crtb says:

        @ Patricia
I thought I was the only one who felt this way about Leslie Jones. I don’t find her funny at all. I cringe every time I watch her.

I am so tired of remakes. Can’t anyone in Hollywood come up with a new idea?

    • Trillion says:

They even made her say, “Oh hell no”.

  3. Coco says:

I’ll be in a seat to see it. Looks entertaining, I really adore all those actresses, and an all lady movie…I’m there! I agree that it didn’t need to be rebooted but a lot of crappy sequels are out there and if they did right by the original, then fine by me.

    • mia girl says:

I love the four actresses as well.
I will be there opening weekend. And I am happy that I can take my kids to see a movie with all female leads!

PS Kate McKinnon looks like she just might steal the show.

      • Pix says:

Leslie Jones is the best part of that trailer and I think Melissa McCartney is strong. Oddly, I thought Kate McKinnon was the weakest.

    • lucy2 says:

That’s my feeling too – a reboot wasn’t necessary, but this doesn’t look bad at all, plus I too love the 4 actresses. I definitely want to go see this.

Plus I’ve enjoyed most of the director’s other films.

  4. BendyWindy says:

    It looks good!

  5. Beckysuz says:

That actually looks really cute. But also I just really like those ladies and think they’re funny. Something about Kate McKinnon’s facial expressions just crack me up, and Leslie Jones is hilarious.

  6. Mimz says:

I will be watching. It’s a classic, but kids nowadays don’t really watch old movies, so it’s good if they see great stories re-imagined with actors they recognize (though I don’t agree with EVERY remake).

  7. sassy says:

I don’t know why, I don’t understand it…but Kate McKinnon gave my lady bits the tingles in that trailer. Maybe it was the yellow tinted glasses….?

  8. NeNe says:

i don’t understand why they have to re-make movies. Why mess with the original? I definitely will not be seeing this movie. In my opinion, most re-makes suck!!

    • iheartjacksparrow says:

Hollywood has to re-make movies because they need to make a profit and they think that by regurgitating old successes they can make money. But most remakes (Psycho and Carrie come to mind) are bombs that no one wants to see because they remember fondly the original films. I just read they are remaking Flatliners, which I love. Instead of coming up with something new (like Deadpool) studios want a built-in audience. Or, it could be as simple, as some people think, that Hollywood has simply run out of original ideas.

      • NeNe says:

        @iheartjacksparrow:
Thank you for explaining it to me. I heard they were remaking Dirty Dancing. Oh, boy, that’s gonna blow! Hollywood needs to get their acts together.

  9. DarkSparkle says:

I have a feeling this will be a fun girls night, with a few flasks stuck in the purses. It looks like a good time!

  10. lower-case deb says:

count me in! count me in!

  11. Aussie girl says:

Looks good!! I think they have picked a solid cast.

  12. Lurker says:

    YUP.

  13. Amy Tennant says:

I want to like this more than I actually do, but I’m definitely going to see it

    • missmerry says:

agree. The trailer didn’t thrill me. I loathe when things are explained to the audience the way the trailer did with the girls’ roles “omg, you’re a brilliant engineer” “omg, you’re so street and you know NY so you’re useful to us” “oh, you’re a partical physicist”

then every clip is just mccarthy and wiig being awkward together. which can/could be funny, but it gets old in a 2.5 minute clip…

the party with Patty fell flat for me too…

But I have to say McCarthy and McKinnon look amazing (like, their skin and hair and glasses are all great)

    • Carol says:

I agree. I was very underwhelmed by the trailer which us too bad because i lve all these actresses. Leslie Jones cracked me a bit though.

  14. Josefina says:

I think it looks bloody awful. But then again, I don’t have a soul and I didn’t even like the original that much.

I have no ill feelings for this movie though. I won’t watch it but I hope it does well.

    • anon33 says:

I didn’t like the original either and have endured years of harassment and ridicule because of this opinion. Glad I’m not the only one!

      • Trillion says:

I never got the mass appeal either, but THIS I will support. It makes a difference that I’ll have my 8 year old in tow.

    • Amanda G says:

I didn’t like the original either.

  15. Mindy says:

The first half of the trailer makes it look like a direct remake of the original and the second half – well, it makes me think that those are the funniest bits from the movie. I’ll pass.

Not a fan of prequels, sequels, remakes or reboots… and this hasn’t changed my mind at all on that.

  16. Cait says:

THE POWER OF PATTY COMPELS YOU.

Really, there’s nothing else to say.

    • marshmellow says:

Yep. It was okay in the beginning, but I think I’m sold on that last scene. And Hemsworth kicking the door down. I don’t know why he does that, but I hope he does it several times.

    • Betti says:

Hahaha – i loved that line, She literally b!tchslapped the ghost outta of Melissa’s character.

I love Leslie – she would also make a great Nina Simone. I believe she can sing.

    • Decorative Item says:

I know! I’m going to be saying that for a very long time and for every occasion. Weddings, family get together s, kids wont eat, partners bothering you, how is this no applicable to everything?

  17. Jenns says:

I love this group of women. I think they are really funny and I’m looking forward to this film. Plus, the ghosts look awesome.

I also will never understand the hatred directed at this re-make. It’s like people take it personally. The original was fine. But in my opinion, it’s not a classic and doesn’t hold up.

  18. angie says:

I know I’m going to go see it !!

  19. QQ says:

This gave me UTTER happiness, Zero snark also my Ladyboner for Kate McKinnon is unstoppable RN

    • Marty says:

She looks great in this. Her and Leslie made me laugh out loud.

    • Yup, Me says:

I adore Kate McKinnon. I’m excited primarily because of her.

I’m happy Leslie is doing well in her career but I’m not really feeling her role based on what I saw here. We’ll see how it plays out.

  20. Ravensdaughter says:

Great cast, special effects look awesome, and the ghosts can possess the human form. Awesome!

I’ll admit the Caddy hearse and a few other recycles from the old movies are a bit much, but so what? It looks like the perfect movie to take my 14 and 16 year olds to.

When they were 5 and 7, the Stay Puft Marshmallow man scared the crap out of them. I can’t wait to see the massive monster in this film!

  21. Minxx says:

I’m waiting for the “are you the keymaster?” moment in the new one.. LOL. Loved Sigourney in the original.

  22. MexicanMonkey says:

Almost all the jokes fell flat for me. I’ll probably wait for another trailer and maybe some reviews before I decide if I’ll see it.

That said, Kate McKinnon barely said a word in that trailer and she’s somehow the person I wanna see most.

    • lucy2 says:

McKinnon is going to be the breakout star of this, I think. She has amazing screen presence.

      • sophie says:

McKinnon is the best part of SNL. Check out the skit she did on SNL called alien abduction. It was hilarious. She had the host cracking up during the skit.

  23. moon says:

As a woman, I was really worried about this because the stakes are high for women – if it’s not good, people will start moaning about liberals, PC culture blah blah blah. It’s unfair because if a male led comedy bombed, no one would say it’s because men aren’t funny but women are subjected to this awful double standard. The movie looks decent and funny though!

  24. knower says:

    Yea, this……doesn’t look good.

This isn’t going to help us with the naysayers.

  25. daisyfly says:

My kids love the first two so this will be a summer watch for us.

I admit, I got a bit nostalgic when I saw Slimer.

  26. Nancy says:

My personal favorite thing, the remake 🙁 right up there with reality shows. I thought Melissa was hysterical in Bridesmaids but have never found her funny in anything else. I caught her on one of the shopping networks selling big girl clothes. Same for Kristin, again loved her in Bridesmaids and SNL but that’s it. But who am I going to call…the original Ghostbusters! Think I’d rather just watch Dan and Bill Murray on dvd.

  27. Cupcake says:

I lurve Kate Mckinnon so I’d see it just for her. It looks fun as long as you are not taking it too seriously. I’ll see it eventually.

  28. Marianne says:

I just don’t find Melissa McCarthy that funny. So I cant say that I am looking forward to this one.

Plus why couldn’t Leslie also be a scientist who was already a part of the team as well. But no, they like literally are giving her the same role as Ernie Hudson.

  29. Mia4s says:

I despise the idea of a Ghostbusters remake…well I despise most remakes…but if they had to, at least it’s a slightly original take. A lot of the jokes fell flat for me though so I hope that’s a matter of keeping the great stuff a surprise…I hope. I’ll go cautiously optimistic.

One weird complaint? I don’t like the new uniforms! Something about the orange? I can’t explain it but I really dislike them.

  30. word says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t find Leslie Jones funny? I like watching SNL, but her skits in particular always fall flat. I don’t know why. I’m just not a fan of hers. Maybe I’ll like her in this movie.

  31. serena says:

    The bitch-slap power.

I love Ghostbuster in its every form, so I can’t wait to see this! It seems fun and that’s how it should remain, a fun kid-friendly movie with badasses and smart everyday-heroes.
I hope they’ll never make it dark and complicated, it’s just not.

  32. Tara says:

Not usually a fan of remakes, but this looks awesome. If I see a movie in a theatre any time soon, this will be it.

  33. moonmay says:

    Gawd, Kate McKinnon is gorgeous.
That’s all I got. Feeling conflicted about this movie.

  34. Jess says:

Loved the trailer; loved these ladies; love Thor as the sexy receptionist! My kids (a boy and a girl) and I can’t wait to see this movie!

  35. nicegirl says:

All for female lead films, and I love the original Ghostbusters, I saw it in the theater as a kid.

    So I’m there!

I ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost

  36. Camille says:

It does look cute. I’ll definitely see this one.

  37. Trixie says:

It seems really boring. I didn’t laugh at all during the trailer.

  38. Dizzybenny says:

They lost me at the ”4 scientists”.
I mean if you cant get it right at the beginning, how am I supposed to have faith in this movie?
Any of you seen ”Not another teen movie” when the black character says he’s the token black.
He’s only there to say ”damn, shit and that is whack”
The black actress looks like she’s exactly that.
”I don’t understand all that science stuff” and ”I know NY” all that was missing was for her to say yes masser!!
    It’s borderline racist.

  39. Trillion says:

I can’t wait to see the RuPaul challenge based on this movie.

  40. emma says:

    I’m into it
