Alicia Silverstone & Molly Ringwald team up for a new movie: what year is this?

This story made me so happy, seeing my favorite 80s actress, a star from one of my guilty pleasures from the 90s and my second favorite designer from Project Runway together at one event! John Hughes’ muse Molly Ringwald joined Clueless star Alicia Silverstone and designer Christian Siriano, who designed both actresses’ outfits for the premiere of the film King Cobra. The actresses dazzled on the red carpet at Saturday’s Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan. It’s hard to believe Molly is 48 and Alicia is 39. Let’s all ponder on how time flies. They look great though, don’t they?

King Cobra, produced and starring James Franco, is based on a true story of murder and scandal in the gay porn industry. Would you expect anything less from a James Franco project? Christian Slater, from Heathers – if you want to keep the nostalgia train rolling here, plays a gay porn producer who discovers up and coming star Brent Corrigan, played by Garrett Clayton (from TV’s The Fosters). When Brent wants out of his contract, Slater’s character hires two rival porn producers, played by James Franco and Pretty Little Liars star Keegan Allen, to rub him out. Molly and Alicia have cameo roles in the film, which was directed by Justin Kelly and is based on the book Cobra Killer: Gay Porn, Murder, and the Manhunt to Bring the Killers to Justice by Peter A. Conway and Andrew E. Stoner.

Christian Slater said the role of a gay porn producer was completely out of his comfort zone, telling Variety:

I remember when I saw ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and I had such a visceral reaction to that movie, and thought, ‘Oh my god, I could never do anything like that.’ And as I’ve gotten older, I think I have gotten less judgmental about things and hopefully a little bit more mature about these subject matters.

I’ve never played a homosexual before and I just didn’t want to, I guess bring any stereotypical nonsense to it, or do any kind of caricature-y type things that I’ve seen in other films. I just wanted to be a human being who happens to like young men.

[From Variety]

Molly, who has kept a low profile since her series The Secret Life of the American Teenager was cancelled in 2013, told the audience at a post-screening Q&A, “I was just happy to be in a movie where all the guys had to take off their clothes.”

I hadn’t hear about this project until now, but after hearing about the plot and getting a sneak peek of James Franco and Keegan Allen working out, I may have to add this to my “must see” list. I’m getting a Boogie Nights vibe here, and I love that flick. James Franco is delightfully eccentric and the addition of Molly and Alicia makes this an interesting prospect for the next time I’m at the cineplex.

Umm, congrats, Christian Slater, on being able to approach a homosexual as a human being?

    What year is this, indeed.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, such growth. Now he feels he can play the role without lisping and holding his wrist limply, I suppose. What a guy.

      • mkyarwood says:

He will play it the same as every other damn role he’s ever played! He was the same guy on Mr Robot!

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Molly, please update your hair. It has been over 20 years.

    • cleveland girl says:

      100 %

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

What has she done to her face??!!! She certainly updated that!
In the home page thumbnail, I thought, “Who is this person? The title says Ringwald/Silverstone! Who IS that?” Then I realized I thought it was Diablo Cody.

I have a soft spot for Christian…..simply from seeing Untamed Heart with his baboon heart…aww. I don’t think he’s a homophobe, he just wants to his character justice. Poor Molly and that hair, it looks better when she straightens it. Alicia….as if

  4. cleveland girl says:

I loved them both in the 80s, but they look “great”??? Hardly. Molly hasn’t changed her styling in 30 years. Alicia has the same crooked smile and dead eye expression in every photo. I think they both need drastic makeovers. Especially in the 3rd photo. Was that taken when Alicia rolled out of bed???

  5. paolanqar says:

I love Alicia’s dress but what’s up with Molly’s mouth?

  6. Barrett says:

I love them! I like Molly’s hair! Still a signature look and the waves are a bit modern.

Love them all forever! Made my monday.

  7. sauvage says:

I am scared by Molly Ringwald’s face. It looks so tight, how can that not be painful? Just another perfect example of “Just leave your face alone, godd***it!”.

Looks like she caught ‘The Fear’. I have it a few moments here and there every day, as I realize I’m closer to 40 than 35. Nobody has seen It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep, African, and Alec Baldwin I bet, but, there’s a scene where she goes to get a plastic surgery consult just to lift her one droopy eyelid. The doctor tells her the ‘simple procedure’ of essentially cutting her whole face off to ‘fix it’. She runs away. I’m pretty sure that’s how I feel about it. TLC used to show a plastic surgery show back in the day, too, that showed every little horrifying detail that helped me get over it. There is beauty in age, not in holding on to ‘your youth’ with every last breath.

      • sauvage says:

I’m all for taking good care of yourself, of course, at any age, but the concept of, as you so vivividly describe it, “cutting one’s whole face off” in order to fix something nobody noticed in the first place, simply doesn’t make sense to me. Going through anaesthesia, putting your body through the healing process after massive surgery, and all for no medical purpose? No. Just no.

I’m sure you look perfectly fine, mkyarwood, by the way. Human, you know? In my book, that’s a good thing.

  8. K says:

I never thought Molly had much acting talent, and hoo boy her singing is worse.

  9. Lucy says:

I was watching Heathers the other day and absolutely hated myself for lusting over Christian’s (spoiler?) POS of a character…ugh.

    • Ripley says:

I love that you just did a (?) spoiler alert for a movie that is 28 (!) years old. Made me giggle… And I totally agree that he’s a lustworthy POS.

    • DelilahJones says:

Oh my god, I was watching this last night and had that exact inner turmoil. Then I convinced myself it was okay and I was only having those feelings because he reminded me of Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

  10. mkyarwood says:

Oh dear. I was almost interested, but suddenly: JAMES FRANCO.

  11. Size Does Matter says:

@Corey – who is your first favorite Project Runway designer?

  12. Redgrl says:

    Ah memories. Love Molly Ringwald…

  13. iheartgossip says:

Oh Molly! I didn’t even recognize you!
