Taylor Swift covers the Vogue Met Gala ‘special edition’: deserving or blah?

1316-VO-METM91-01-NO UPC

Vogue Magazine has been doing these “Met Gala supplementals” for a while now, I think. In years past, the magazine doesn’t necessarily feature the big female co-chair. Sometimes they just use the most remarkable or newsworthy fashion moment on the cover. But this year, they decided to go with this year’s co-chair, Taylor Swift. And I am underwhelmed. Out of all of the Met Gala drama, Taylor’s Louis Vuitton look was such a snooze. It wasn’t even flat-out bad enough to be interesting.

You can read Hamish Bowles’ Met Gala write-up here. I didn’t learn anything super-new, just some details about the decorations for the event, which included “original copies of Diderot’s controversial Encyclopedia—an Enlightenment bible—are open to the pages illustrating the traditional fashion arts.” I also learned that Vogue considered Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift’s awkward dance-party flailing to be “an electrifying hip-hop tango.” O RLY? Vogue also did a better job of explaining the theme of this year’s Met Gala, and I sort of wish Hamish Bowles had written up an explanation for the theme to be sent out ahead of the gala.

Still, even though Swifty’s dress was basic, it’s still an honor for her to be chosen for the Vogue special edition. It’s one of many, many honors Taylor has been receiving this year. She was also just named the top money-maker of 2015, mostly because her 1989 Tour raked in the serious money.

LOL @ that “pose” on the cover. Terrible pic.

The dress was very meh. I did enjoy seeing her with the dark lip and platinum blonde though–simply because it’s a sharp departure from the same look she’s been doing forever.

    • Erinn says:

I reaaaallly want that lipstick. I don’t feel NEARLY confident enough to go out in public wearing it, but I’d totally sulk around the house feeling so edgy haha. I’m not even making FUN of her, I’m 100% serious.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I have a lipstick in that shade ( only one I own) and I only wear it around the house. But one day I will step outised! One day!

      • Kitten says:

Yes I was thinking the same thing! Sitting here, wondering if I could pull that color off (not likely lol).

      • Erinn says:

I’d look like a zombie. I’m a good bit paler than Swift – to the point that my sun loving gram constantly tells me I need to go get bloodwork done because I look so sickly haha.

I found the ID though, it seems to be a NARs velvet matte lipstick in Train Bleu.

      • Marty says:

Anyone can pull off a dark lip, the trick is to offset it with the rest of the face. Make the rest of your makeup softer so the focus is on the dramatic lip.

Makeup up should be fun wear that dark lip proud!

    • GingerCrunch says:

Wayyyy better than the mouse-y soccer mom ‘do for sure.

    • Tiffany27 says:

Same. I was really into the platinum hair and dark lip.

    • FingerBinger says:

I like the dark lip as well but that platinum does nothing for her.

    • anna says:

her blonde is so bad, it looks like my hair when i used to dye it myself with some drugstore product not knowing anything about toner. compare with jlaw’s blonde. that is a good cold blonde. swift’s though has that yellow tinge that looks cheap and is unflattering for her skin tone. i really don’t get it. so many resources and such a bad look.
same goes for the dress but i guess that is a matter of taste.
last thing: please close your mouth! are all of these famous peoples sinuses clogged or what?

    • zinjojo says:

Not a flattering photo, and really emphasizes her tendency towards looking rat-like. She’d probably look better in a photo with a closed mouth or a full smile — open mouth with her teeth out is not her look.

And the dress is meh although I like the dark lip.

    • QQ says:

Agreed, I was Only here for these things… also LOL at that “pose” also is almost as if the Photoshopped her Blinding White Chiclets for teeth wtf

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

I see that her booty wasn’t back from the dry cleaner’s in time for the Met Gala…

      • teacakes says:

ok I need to stop reading CB while I drink because I just snorted tea up my nose @this

  2. HH says:

For being fashion’s biggest night, that’s the most boring picture I’ve ever seen. I miss when McQueen and Galliano* were making dresses for the event. I miss the avant garde fashion.

*This was pre anti-semitic rant Galliano.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Me too. Those were gorgeous timeless dresses. Galliano killed his own career with his bigotry. No sympathy from me.

      • HH says:

He sure did. What a waste.

During those times, the fashion was truly art. It felt like a very different event, with a very different crowd than other award shows. Now, it just feels like the Oscars/Grammys

  3. Shell says:

Blah to the moon and back

  4. Lex says:

One of the many, many things I don’t understand about Taylor: why does she always have her mouth open for her pictures? I can see her entire top set of teeth in these pictures, yet she’s not smiling. It’s so weird!

I think she’s on this cover because she was a co chair and she’s at the top of her game. This isn’t an honor, just a PR shout out to both Taylor and Vogue. Hopefully we’ll be Taylor free now for the rest of the year.

  5. littlemissnaughty says:

That cover looks so budget. Like it wasn’t planned but hastily thrown together at the last minute because the original cover model got sick or something. “Can you just stand still for a sec? … Okay, got it.” I do like her hair.

  6. Greenieweenie says:

Do you ever wonder if Taylor Swift is the backlash from the first black man elected president? Sometimes it feels like an emperor has no clothes situation. She has a crap voice that’s barely even karaoke good. She writes middling songs. She’s awkward. Just, WHY is she the voice of an era? If I think about everything that’s happened, I can’t help but wonder if people were so rocked by change and uncertainty that they clung to the most basic bland shit they could find, and that happened to be Taylor Swift, two time Album of the Year award winner (right? I’d Google if I cared more).

    • Susan says:

I’ve never wondered that, greenieweenie, but I do wonder if she’s some sort of asexual backlash to all of the overt sexuality of the previous generation of stars (Britney, dirty Christina, Robin Thicke, etc.) I remember wondering if we’d hit peak saturation point for simulated sex on the radio.

That being said, I’m old and out of touch (My favorite satellite stations are the Bridge and Lithium). LOL.

    • Snarkarella says:

On a subconscious level I do think you’re right. It is the same reason Country music became so popular during the same time. It is a reaction to the growing popularity of music that had a more “ethnic” influence (read black) as compared to previous decades where there was a clear separation between music made for white audiences. While I don’t think Swift herself has any racist views, I suspect that many of the parents of her early supporters did. The way they defended their support was to claim the music was less sexual than other artists. But then I’m an old person and I may be reading too much into it. This country is post-racial now.

  7. FingerBinger says:

The hair color looks harsh. She needs to go darker asap.

  8. Jegede says:

This is not a fashion decision.
This cover is about the commercial synergy between Apple and Vogue.
    http://www.racked.com/2016/4/29/11524034/vogue-apple-met-gala-costume-institute

Zero coincidence that Taylor was MET Gala co-chair and is currently doing adverts for Apple.

  9. Nancy says:

I’ll say it again. Taylor Momsen. Kinda seems like Vogue is turning into the National Enquirer of the not so elite. Covers of Kardashians and Taylor, sad.

  10. perplexed says:

Why are they making her look so terrible? I say “blah” not because of who she is, but because of how they’re styling her.

    • Kimbers says:

I agree her styling sucks!! Maybe taylor wasnt confident enough for an edgier gala look and this was all sbe would agree with? Either way it was a fail

  11. Dani2 says:

Shoulda put Claire Dane on the cover instead tbh

  12. Ashley says:

I missed rihanna at the met this year. Claire Danes should’ve gotten the cover,Taylor looked a hot mess.

    • Dani2 says:

Girl, we posted the exact same thing at the same time. Claire Danes’ look WAS the Met Gala 2016, I’m sorry, but that pose, that angle, that iPhone quality picture on that cover isn’t doing Taylor any favours.

  13. Bridget says:

    At least it’s not Kimye.

  14. Tifygodess24 says:

Vogue is the People magazine of the fashion world at this point. So this is about right for a cover.

  15. Fallon says:

I always knew Jenny Humphrey would make it big one day!

  16. NeoCleo says:

I hate her hair. She’s totally fried it with over-processing. It’s dry and flimsy looking. I hope she stops killing it.

  17. CornyBlue says:

Should have been Claire Danes. Her dress is iconic and definitely generated the most conversation

  18. Beatrice says:

Taylor’s look is a snooze, but I am so thankful that Kim and Kanye (aka best dressed couple-barf) didn’t snag the cover.

  19. Magnoliarose says:

Boring. After viewing her dress more than three times there is no need to see it again.

  20. Jessica says:

Terrible photo, terrible look, NO to all of it.

  21. Kimmu says:

Vogue is Classic. Taylor Swift being on Vogue Cover magazine with that horrible photo leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Seriously!!!
