Did Charlize Theron dump Sean Penn because ‘The Last Face’ is awful?

wenn23980232

Even though Charlize Theron insisted, just months ago, that her split with Sean Penn last year was the opposite of dramatic, the photos and the body language do not lie. These are photos of Charlize, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Adele Exarchopoulos at today’s photocall for The Last Face, the film Charlize and Sean did together when they were still a couple, before she ghosted his ass HARD. She can claim that everything was fine, that their split was a mutual thing, but the body language doesn’t lie. They aren’t even looking at each other! They can’t even stand next to each other!!!

As for the film, it’s apparently one of the worst things to ever happen to filmmaking. According to Variety, The Last Face “is being savaged on Twitter after premiering Friday at Cannes” with many calling it the “worst of the festival. Others are also quipping that the picture is so awful it destroy Penn’s relationship with Theron.” Some of the assorted Twitter reviews:

Sam Creighton ‏@sam_creighton
The Last Face is definitely the worst film I’ve seen in Cannes. Pompous, pointless… and I think a little bit racist…

Melissa Silverstein ‏@melsil
I joined in the booing for my first time today for The Last Face. It was so bad that I laughed at loud at times.

Melissa Silverstein ‏@melsil
Sean Penn needs to stop directing. Hated pretty much every second of The Last Face.

Benjamin Lee ‏@benfraserlee
The Last Face is Beasts of No Nation rewritten for white people by Nicholas Sparks. No wonder Penn and Theron broke up #Cannes2016

Alex Billington ‏@firstshowing
The Last Face – Lots of powerful images, but Sean Penn cannot direct at all. So cheesy, laughably bad, utter trash. Seriously awful awful.

Guy Lodge ‏@GuyLodge
Is it possible Charlize Theron saw a rough cut of THE LAST FACE and *then* ended things with Sean Penn? I would.

[Compiled by Variety]

Hahaha. This is funny, because everyone knew that the script was crap too, and that Sean Penn just wanted to direct something “powerful” about “humanitarians” in Africa. I’m glad it’s blowing up in his (ham)face. But poor Charlize. No wonder she looks so glum.

Why poor Charlize, she knew what she did

  2. Jh says:

    Awk-ward. Omg.

  3. LannisterForever says:

I actually really liked “Into The Wild”, which Sean Penn directed.

    • anniefannie says:

That really was an amazing movie! I have to say I’m really surprised that his movie is getting savaged. While I’m not crazy about how he conducts his personal life I’ve always liked his artistic endeavors.

    • Turtle says:

Really enjoyed that movie, too. This flick might be awful, who knows, but the knives are out for Penn right now, so it doesn’t stand a chance. (I randomly caught an episode of “Friends” with Penn and he was so adorably charming, I wish we’d see more of THAT guy.)

      • holly hobby says:

Oh yeah his Friends guest spot was pretty good. I was just surprised he can act anything besides angry old man. After I had my baby, the hospital tv was playing Mystic River, he was surprisingly good in that too.

Eh he should stick with acting.

    • Saks says:

      Into the Wild was fantastic!

I really dislike Penn as a person but people are forgetting that being disliked or booed at a Film Festival (especially at Cannes) doesn’t really mean anything. Taxi Driver and Pulp fiction were booed and Carlos Reygadas won the director’s award even when his movie was ripped appart by some critics.

I don’t want to sound smug but I never look for the US critics when it comes to film festivals because they tend to review movies from their Hollywood perspective. I much prefer the French, British and my country’s critics.

Now, I don’t think for a moment that Penn has a misunderstood masterpiece in his hands, just that maybe the movie might not be as awful.

      • Kimberly says:

Totally agree with you, Saks, about foreign movie reviews vs. American ones.

    • siri says:

Love Into The Wild (and Eddie Vedder’s music in it), and also truly enjoyed The Indian Runner, his first one as a director. He is very capable of delivering good quality, so I wonder if his relationship with Theron actually went sour during filming. Working together is different from just being together on a private level. I remember there was re-shooting of scenes when they already had split up. I like Penn, but I think he sometimes overestimates his capacities, like with that interview with El Chapo

    • Die Zicke says:

I read a review on Buzzfeed where the critic really liked Into The Wild, but hates this movie. So I think its just a really bad movie. Even good directors make really bad movies sometimes.

  4. haley1020 says:

i cannot stand that adele woman

  5. Pmnichols says:

They both suck as much as the movie. Lol!!

  6. CornyBlue says:

Good thing Charlize does not have to see his lobster red face ever again. Good riddance.

    • susiecue says:

OMG I came here to comment that it is just BEYOND in these pics. It’s like he’s parodying his own ham faceness.

    • lisa2 says:

That’s kind of a moot point. He and she have seen all of each other.. they have done a lot together on and off the screen. She and he know pretty much all there is to know. So they can stop seeing each other; but that experience is still there.

    • Bridget says:

Seriously! How is he so red? I didn’t know faces came in that shade.

  7. Tara says:

I don’t care what she says, they hate each other’s guts. They are trying to keep their distance from each other as much as possible. My theory is they had a nasty fight and Charlize saw a different side to Sean that freaked her out, so she dumped him quick.

I’m not surprised the movie is supposedly horrible. Sean Penn takes himself so seriously that it was probably totally tone deaf from his rich person privileged humanitarian angle. Charlize will be fine. She’s survived bad films before. Her reunion with Jason Reitman will redeem her probably. It’s Sean that has it bad. First the huge fail that was the El Chapo interview and now this movie that he worked so hard on is a disaster and he has to see the girl who dumped him. Fail after fail for Sean Penn

  8. jinni says:

Between this and the Huntsman movie, things aren’t looking too good for her career. If it was such a bad script and everyone knew that before the film even started she shouldn’t have let dick cloud her mind and made better decisions. Si I really can’t feel bad for the poistion she’s in right now.

    • Mia4s says:

She’s smart though, remember she’s signed on as the villain in the next Fast and Furious. Even if it is garbage it’s a guaranteed hit.

    • Tara says:

To be fair Mad Max Fury Road was just last year and that was her most acclaimed film ever and most iconic role. Plus she has that Jason Reitman film and other things on the horizon. You win some you lose some.

  9. Soprana says:

Robin Wright is probably laughing hysterically right now

  10. KBeth says:

She likely dumped him because he’s an asshole.
    Her shoes are awesome.

  11. Mia4s says:

The Hollywood Reporter ripped it a new one calling it “stunningly self important” and “insulting refugee porn”.

Penn? Stunningly self important? I’m shocked I tell you! Shocked! 😉

  12. haley1020 says:

can sean penn retire now like seriously who even likes his movies anymore lol

    • lisa2 says:

I think Sean is a very good actor. There are many actors making movies that are bad. They haven’t retired. You make good movies and sometime bad one. Such is the game of acting.

      • FingerBinger says:

This. Every actor ,actress and director make bad films in their careers. It happens.

      • CornyBlue says:

He hasnt made good movie in quite a while. If he was anything excpet a crusty white male he would have been long forgotten.

    • holly hobby says:

I agree he ‘s a good actor. He can play any spectrum – comedy (Fast Times at Ridgmont High, Friends) and drama (Mystic River).

I do think that if he wasn’t such a tool and a douche, he would have had a bigger career (big box office movies) than what he has now.

      • Taxi says:

He was great in Up At the Villa with Kristin Scott Thomas. Not really a comedy, but very funny. That & Mystic River are his best roles, imo.

    • siri says:

I like his acting, and think he’s very talented at that. As a director, he had really good ones (Indian Runner, Into The Wild) and mediocre ones. But you need a good script, and this wasn’t one of those. I also think it was a mistake to cast his then-partner in it.

  13. QQ says:

These pics are amazing * claps* More! More! Let’s see how much press they’ll do for this together

  14. terry says:

Charlize likely left after finding out about his plans to interview El Chapo. No one who is sane wants to get anywhere near that. Sean Penn shouldn’t get too comfortable thinking the Sinaola Cartel has let that betrayal go.

    • FingerBinger says:

El Chapo escaped prison in July. Penn and Theron broke up before that. How would she know El Chapo would escape and Penn would interview him?

    • Saks says:

They broke up before El Chapo interview. But anyway, she should stay forever away from him, Cartels do get their revenge, even if they have to wait. If I was him, I wouldn’t just put that episode behind me and I would be worried for my kids.

  15. Talie says:

I can’t believe Charlize even showed up. Their breakup was so bad…awkward!

  16. AliceToo says:

Probably had contractual obligations to show up. In addition to body language, she clearly decided to leave the glamour at home. Mediocre fashion, not nice enough to get press, not bad enough to get press either. Go Charlize…

  17. Java says:

    LMAO: Benjamin Lee ‏@benfraserlee
The Last Face is Beasts of No Nation rewritten for white people by Nicholas Sparks. No wonder Penn and Theron broke up #Cannes2016
    😂😁😜😝😆

  18. Tash says:

I feel bad for Javier. I like him as an actor and here he is in a $hit movie :/

  19. Kelly says:

Yikes. A soul patch. How Backstreet Boy of him.

  20. Skins says:

She probably dumped him because his face is awful

  21. Div says:

Critics may dislike Penn and he may have directed good films in the past but no one can deny that the logline for The Last Face is absolutely cringe worthy. Why did anyone think making a humanitarian film in Africa with all four main characters foreign white people a good thing?

It is interesting though that the boos/abuse were supposedly louder for Neon Demon, which at least some critics liked, rather than this trite piece of crap.

  22. Jayna says:

It is shocking that Sean has directed a horrible movie. All directors have misfires and put out a movie just okay, but really good directors don’t usually direct a turkey. Sean has directed some movies that I loved, so this is unexpected. I do feel sorry for him. No one likes to have their work ridiculed and people booing and laughing. I love Javier and Charlize in movies, so feel sorry for them also.

  23. Giddy says:

Was it because “The Last Face” is so awful, or because his face is so awful??? Sorry, not sorry, I’ll go to my room now.

  24. Kitten says:

Oh yay, is this another White Savior Goes To Africa To Save The Poor Black People movies? Didn’t Reese Witherspoon already make this film with The Good Lie?

How creatively impoverished and bereft of any self-awareness are these Hollywood people?
    Don’t answer that, it’s rhetorical.

    • marymoon says:

Reese “I’m an American Citizen!” Witherspoon?!
Oh, gross. Missed that one. And more than a dozen others she’s done since Election.

    • manta says:

I haven’t seen the Witherspoon movie but vividly remember Beyond Borders and how strongly I disliked this one. When I read about Penn’s project, that’s the one that popped up. Oh, tragic love story of white people in refugee sites (none of them fully developped a s a character but hey they make a good background), their eye opening moment etc!!!

  25. Lucy says:

I must say I do feel bad for her. Also, I love Adele’s minidress!!

  26. LAK says:

    Yep! It’s pretty bad.

  27. Tania says:

Haha I misread the title of the post and read “did CT dump SP because of his face”? That would be a resounding YES. LOL. He looks like chewed up beef jerkey.

  28. key says:

This movie was doomed from the beginning. Good it coming back to bite them in the ass. Robin Wright is somewhere smoking by a window and smiling.

    • susanne says:

“Smoking by a window and smiling”-
      Perfection!
I hear Frank in the background, some monologue about taking over the world and revenge….

    • Christin says:

I think it’s beyond karma for it to be ridiculed to this degree (not just his directing, but her acting as well). They both deserve it.
