Miss Australia feels victimized by international criticism of her body

Skinny model causes furore at Miss Universe final

What’s with all of the beauty queen scandals this month? First the mess that is Miss California, now this. A finalist for the Miss Universe pageant, Miss Australia (real name: Stephanie Naumoska) is being criticized internationally for her rail-thin appearance. I’m sure when she’s fully clothed, Miss Australia looks healthy enough. But the bikini pictures of her are a little scary – you can count her ribs, and you can pretty much see every bone in her arms. Miss Australia has issued several vehement denials of an eating disorder, including a defensive appearance on Good Morning America, all the time claiming to live “a healthy, active lifestyle”.

An Australian Miss Universe finalist, whose rail-thin appearance caused a stir as she pranced down the catwalk in a bikini, tells Good Morning America, she was singled out and victimized for her skinny appearance in the contest.

“I’ve never been anorexic or bulimic, I’ve never been malnourished or underfed,” Stephanie Naumoska said. “I live a healthy, active lifestyle.”

Critics, citing the model’s visible bones and ribcage, said Naumoska’s emaciated look was a danger to herself and those looking to emulate the her. A judge in the competition remarked he would have “wanted to go and feed her straightaway” if he was her daughter.

The 19-year-old brunette is at 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 105 ponds with a body-mass index score, at 15.8, less than the 18 score she would need to be considered malnourished.

Naumoska said she wasn’t malnourished; she said that if she was, her hair and skin wouldn’t look as healthy as it does, and she wouldn’t have the energy to prepare for the grueling contests.

The director of the Miss Australia pageant said Naumoska’s Macedonian heritage was the reason for her appearance.

“The women do have long, lithe bodies and small bones,” Deborah Miller told UK Daily Mail last week. “It’s their body type, just as Asian girls tend to be rather small. She doesn’t have an eating disorder or anything like that. There’s nothing wrong with her.”

[From Radar Online]

I feel like I defend the too-skinny girls a lot. It’s weird because I’ve never had the “too skinny” problem in my life, but I’ve had friends who were bony and emaciated, yet were constantly eating. I’ve defended Tori Spelling and Keira Knightley recently, because I honestly believe they don’t have eating disorders. I think they’re just thin girls, and in Tori’s case, her metabolism just seems screwed up after two pregnancies. Am I naive? Is every woman in the public eye bulimic?

oh my gawdddd that is sooo grosssssssss! people who were forced into concentration camps and denied food looked like this… i honestly find it insulting that these lame bitches can’t seem to comphrehend a simple basic human need… eating…

being thin and healthy is GREAT… but im sick and tired of these skinny bitches and i’m running out of sympathy for anyone who looks like they’ve got one foot in the grave.

  2. mxml says:

i appreciate you defending them. people vilify skinny girls as if having an eating disorder was some sort of public offensive.

  3. N.D. says:

I can not comment on her life style, it can be healthy enough, but there is sertanly no beauty in this body, at least not enough to be miss anything. She looks scary. May be it’s natural for her but since when the most beautifull titles are awarded out of pity?

  4. anna says:

“I think they’re just thin girls, and in Tori’s case, her metabolism just seems screwed up after two pregnancies. Am I naive? Is every woman in the public eye bulimic?”

Yes, and no – calorie restriction without the body dysmorphic disorder is very very popular.

the models I know often talk about “getting healthy” before a runway or photoshoot, ie. consuming less than 1000 calories for a couple weeks prior over 3 meals a day.

It seems odd to me though, that we’re often keen to criticize women for being too skinny but hesitant to criticize them for being too fat, even though over a third of women are obese – and it’s just as dangerous to your health.

  5. Tia says:

It is ok honey, it could be worse, you could be stupid as hell like Ms. California.. 🙂

  6. Codzilla says:

She kind of looks like a giraffe.

  7. Parisienne says:

She has quite broad hips, so I does not look that “thin” (or maybe does) but there is a point – I have the same heritage and especially when young, you are like a skeleton until age puts some weight on you (and all the burek, pita, kebapi and so on).

  8. Hieronymus Grexx says:

Then why the HELL did you join a beauty contest?

Get out of the modeling business NOW babykins, because it will only get worse.

  9. ChristinaT says:

WRONG!! women get criticized for being fat all the time, when you walk to the grocery store, when you park your car, when you have a cupcake, when you’re single… on and on and on… trust me, i used to be slightly chunky in highschool and i never heard the end of it… i had an obese friend who was very depressed with her condition and eventually got gastric bypass… so for anybody to claim that fat people DON’T get criticized has never actually had one single honest conversation with a fat person… and that just makes me sad…

self absorbed skeletors like the above can kiss my ass… if you’re too vain to eat a sandwich then i’m not wasting any sympathy on you… there’s been so many people who are popping up looking hideous (not just thin) that i’m getting a TAD bit irked… can you tell?

  10. geronimo says:

That’s not a great pic, she looks more proportioned in other pics I’ve seen of her. Yes, she IS thin, and I don’t actually think she’s got a particularly great body shape, but that’s no reason to put it down to her having an eating disorder. When are people going to get over the idea that skinny equals unhealthy? So annoying. Wish people were as worried about obesity which is a far bigger problem.

  11. OXA says:

She looks like a Holocost survivor and needs to eat her some Haagen Daas STAT.

  12. Nony says:

I’d believe her if she had a muscle anywhere on her…

  13. Lex says:

holy geeeeeze. beautiful face, but my god her hands look enormous and her arms ridiculously long because she is so so so thin. I couldn’t stop staring, but more becuase i was trying to figure out what was so off with the physique rather than her good looks.

  14. ChristinaT says:

who says there isn’t worry about obesity? i recall a statistic claiming the government invested over 150million in campains against obesity… i may even be quoting that number on the low side… the weight loss industry profits about 40 billion a year…FORTY BILLION…

not to mention the loss of self esteem and self confidence young children have to endure for being overweight… and images like this ARE NOT HELPING!

  15. Enonymous says:

I tend to come to the defense of the “too-skinny” girls too because my best friend is that thin (naturally) and you have no idea how rude and ignorant some people (especially the fat ones) are. Whenever we went shopping, people would stare at her like she was some short of alien and we even had some overweight ugly people come up to her and giving her lectures (imagine that, the nerve) to why she was so thin, like it was her fault that somehow she intentionally offended them with the way her body looked. She is a very sweet, polite girl so of course she tried to ignore them and would even discourage me from giving a piece of my mind to those insensitive jealous a**holes but you could clearly see she was hurt. These is what I hate about the whole empowering fat ‘curvy’ people, they just end up becoming more rude, bitter and critical of others.

  16. Bros says:

dude, B to the S on this whiner. it takes massive perverse self control to maintain 105 lbs at 5’10”. this is not the face of ‘active healthy lifestyle’ and we shouldnt normalize it or defend it, and im sick of everyone giving celebs, actresses, and beauty queens this illogical benefit of the doubt. when 99.8% of the people in a certain industry maintain a certain body shape, size, and relationship to food and exercise, it isnt an accident or coincidence. this is an industry lifestyle. when betty the office manager has a fast metabolism or shelly the insurance rep eats like a horse and is a size 2, that is an accident and ill give her the benefit of the doubt that she doesnt have an eating disorder. there is no variance in hollywood, pageants, etc. and therefore, it is not random. it is a carefully maintained relationship with food and calories and the pursuit of a very narrowly defined ideal.

  17. STOPGOOP says:

how does she ever hope to succeed in this industry with such thin skin (pun intended)? Why put on a bathing suit in front of millions of people if you don’t want anyone commenting on your body?

  18. Sauronsarmy says:

Ugh what the hell is up with all these beauty pageant stories? First that dumbass from California now this thing?

You’re in a BEAUTY PAGEANT WTF did you expect? If you don’t like it then you need to stop crying and get out of the business, its not that hard.

  19. Codzilla says:

    I agree with Bros/Sauron.

  20. ChristinaT says:

campaigns even… grrr, can’t spell today.

  21. Annie says:

You knew I’d speak out about this. lol.

    AHEM.

As a naturally skinny girl, I could see how it’s possible.

I’m with you Enon and in fact, I’ve gotten what your friend has gotten and I honestly try my hardest to stuff my face with food. I’ve gained more weight thank goodness, and so I don’t get it as much at all (though earlier today, someone at work was all “shut it skinny bitch” in a jokey way. It was the worst in high school when people would question if I was a bulimic because there was “no way I ate that much and is that tiny”.

It’s just the perk of being vietnamese dammit.

  22. Bros says:

    ditto codzilla

  23. Codzilla says:

Bros: Edited my comment at the last minute. Been a shitty day and I’m not in the mood to fight, but thanks for agreeing with me. 🙂

  24. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Meh this skinny cow can kiss my fat ass and stop whining about being dissed cos of her size.

Get a clue and stop prancing about in bikinis in beauty contests and guess what? No-one will give a hoot. Easy peasy lemon squeezy innit.

  25. JoAnnie says:

It’s totally cool that you’ll defend the too-skinny girls. Some of them are just naturally that way, no matter what they try, just like some people are naturally bigger, and it’s unfair they get lumped in with those who actually can help it. Sometimes, you just can’t tell what the case is. My best friend in high school hid her problem for years until she nearly finished college. With others, you can easily tell when they seem to change suddenly or exhibit the kind of low self-esteem typical of an eating disorder. It’s totally possible that this girl is just naturally that way and should simply look into building some muscle mass and consider protein shakes to build a more healthy-looking figure (or not because for sure, why change what’s natural in the face of criticism?), or she has a problem.

She is really, really, really hard to look at, though, like she could break. 🙁

  26. Sauronsarmy says:

Hieronymus Grexx: Exactly. I hate when these chicks scream bloody murder when someone says something remotly negative about their body/beliefs. You’re in a contest that openly judges you on how hot you are what did you expect?

  27. Len says:

Yes dear, you are very naive. There is a simple way to check whether these girls look like this naturally – just look at pictures of them when they were younger. Tori Spelling and Keira Knightley were not that scary skinny in the very beginning of their career. They are definetly starving themselves. Keira has even said that there is alot of pressure in this business to be thin. Now why would you say that if it really costs you no effort to be thin?

  28. Feebee says:

I thought she claimed she was 117lbs, though at 5’10 this still puts her BMI at 16.8. I believe her when she says she doesn’t have an eating disorder but she refused to answer Diane Sawyer’s question about her portion sizes. I agree to look like that you need some pretty intense discipline and that’s the look the runway models (and let’s be honest, the clothes designers too) aspire too, the human clothes hanger look. That gap between her thighs is not “naturally thin”. Her hip width screams for some curves to complement them.

  29. stewie says:

“we’re often keen to criticize women for being too skinny but hesitant to criticize them for being too fat”

um, I don’t know what planet you live on, but anyone who reads ANY gossip blog would know that “fat” women are put down LEFT AND RIGHT. even those that aren’t truly fat.

  30. Annicka says:

Whether or not she has an eating disorder, she’s 5’10” and 105 pounds. She is not an appropriate role model, and Miss Universe is supposed to be a role model.

Plus, she entered a competition where she would be judged on her body and her looks. If she didn’t want people to fuss over her body, she shouldn’t have entered.

  31. Zoe (The Other One) says:

    Stewie – Word.

What rock are these people living under if they don’t hear ‘fat’ people being criticised daily. Perhaps it’s the same rock where gay people choose to be gay.

  32. Enonymous says:

Bloody hell, a lot of bitter fatties around. You know what, 90% of all these weight and diet talks come from fat people obsessed with their weight and even worse, with other people’s weight. I have a lot of friends who are either overweight or thin and it is always the fat ones who are the harshest critics. I am all for “empowering” the “curvy” aka (chubby people) but not if it means you put others down at the same time. The media is responding to the way society works, if people (especially women) stop being so critical of each other whether you are thin or fat then the rest of the world will lay off too. It sounds simple and it can be.

  33. Bros says:

nobody is putting her down enonymous. everyone is telling her if she cant stand the fire, get out of the kitchen. she’s in the body judging business, duh. stop being so ignorant with your bitchy put downs about ‘chubby people’ and insinuating everyone here who is fed up with people with honest to goodness industry-imposed eating disorders must certainly be a bitter fattie-in the same breath as telling women to stop being critical about one another. your comments and this repetition of ’empowering’ is just annoying, and youre a hypocrite.

  34. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Enonymous love, all you are missing is ‘u jellus h8rs’ from your comment and you’d be set.

  35. stewie says:

“if people (especially women) stop being so critical of each other whether you are thin or fat then the rest of the world will lay off too.”

said in the same breath as

“a lot of bitter fatties around”

    hypocrite, much?

  36. ChristinaT says:

enonymous, i feel really sorry for your friends. :/

  37. drm says:

Naive no…not as well informed as you might be yes. “Macedonian” heritage is a new one by me. I looked it up and I cannot see any reference in public health journals or materials to extreme thinness being a trait of a “Macedonian”. I could be wrong of course but I couldn’t find anything.

The fact remains that to get a body mass index of 15.8 (or to get yourself a thin as Tori Spelling after she was a normal weight (and by that I mean within parameters of normality) for her size you cannot be eating properly. Your metabolism does not work that way, not for anyone unless you are very ill or are one of the very rare women who have a super metabolism. There are some women who are quite thin naturally but they are not a common body type. Working in public health you see thousands of different people every year and I can count on one hand the number of naturally thin women I have met.

She looks unhealthily thin and this kind of statement is not a form of villification but based on a set of parameters as set by WHO and of which she is well under. I think the promotion of this particular kind of appearance as a elevated form of beauty (as rendered by participation in the kind of contest) sets up a unrealistic image for many women, young and old.

I have worked with women who have had eating disorders and not one has ever said “yes I have an eating disorder that is why I look this way” while they were in the grip of the problem. After treatment and counselling, sometimes a great deal of it, women can begin to think and articulate in those terms. What I’m saying is that if this contestant is indeed suffering from some form of eating disorder she’s hardly going to cop to it to the world media. Part of the problem with eating disorder psychology is that the person suffering from the disorder believes it is everyone ELSE’s problem, that their weight and body image is ‘normal’ and that they are being ‘picked on’ by those who say otherwise. It is a complex and ellusive mental illness.

  38. Enonymous says:

Yeah Yeah, it is always the same with some people, you can sense the ones who reek of low self esteem and bitterness. I never cared (and still don’t particularly care) about going out of my way to criticizing someone about their weight or looks and I would never go up to someone and rudely tell them to their faces but after seeing how my friend was treated and how these whole “empowering your curvy” bullsh*t works, I can see that overweight/fat people can be as bitchy, self righteous and hypercritical as any other thin person, and even more so. Honey, if you are truly happy and confident of who you are, you surely don’t have the need to put other people down.

  39. Megan says:

In my opinion, she can be whatever weight she wants to be, eating disorder or not. She may well be naturally skinny, she may well have an eating disorder, nobody knows except her and people close to her. The point is, why is it judged as being beautiful? Someone this thin is not a person that I would expect to see in a Miss Whatever pageant, because a body without a normal amount of fat on it is not attractive. I don’t care why she is thin, the question is, why is she in this pageant, and why is she a model?

  40. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Uh I think she doesn’t understand the meaning of the word victimized. You can’t be victimized by someone criticizing you. I’d suggest she’s never really been victimized.

  41. drm says:

@ Eponymous what a well thought out, insightful comment…because really you are correct, this isn’t a women’s health issue its really a case of ‘bitchy self-righteous women’ spewing bullshit at other ‘fat’ or ‘skinny’ women depending on how they feel …my GOD I’m so glad to have that cleared up for myself and my colleagues in the field….

  42. Zoe (The Other One) says:

So if we’re happy and confident with ourselves then we can’t be mean about the poor widdle girls who put themselves out there for public approval? Poor logic Enonymous.

She isn’t some random bird wandering down the street and we’ve all gathered our pitchforks and are hunting her down to punish her for being thin.

Nope, the facts are that she has chosen to be judged for her looks whilst not wearing very many clothes. Suck it up, people are going to judge you on how you look if that’s what you’re asking them to do. It’s a BEAUTY contest. Not a ‘oh she’s quite a nice girl’ contest.

  43. Codzilla says:

Enonymous: I’m afraid the only person on this thread who reeks of low self-esteem and bitterness is you. Get help. Really, life is way too short to let your rage and self-loathing take over like that.

  44. Enonymous says:

Zoe (The Other One), I am not talking about this girl (I do think she is too skinny), I am talking in general and going back to some of the other articles about Lindsay Lohan and Keira Knightley. It is always the same.

  45. Enonymous says:

Codzilla, no need to be so defensive and take things too personally, I realize I might have hit a nerve with you or others but lets keep it friendly now.

Also, I am not the one who harshly named called here (at least not the only one).

  46. queenie says:

According to her BMI, she is MEDICALLY anorexic and malnourished. It is sickness pure and simple that she is considered to be a standard of beauty.

  47. Codzilla says:

Enon: Thank you for proving my point.

  48. Enonymous says:

    Which was what exactly?

  49. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Enonymous – don’t change tack now. We are talking about this girl, and Keira, and Lindsay and ANYONE who chooses to be in the public eye and then bitches and moans because people judge them on how they look. If you don’t want to be judged on your looks, don’t seek out public approval. Simple.

The facts remain, eating disorder or not, this woman and Keira/Lindsay also are clinically considered to be underweight – regardless of whether this is their fault or their body size it’s WRONG to portray this as acceptable body image as equally as it’s irresponsible to portray obesity as acceptable. That’s the point.

And it does kinda hit a nerve when your best argument is to call people bitter fatties (or words to that effect). This is a website that invites comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion without you launching into childish tirades.

  50. anna says:

re: um, I don’t know what planet you live on, but anyone who reads ANY gossip blog would know that “fat” women are put down LEFT AND RIGHT. even those that aren’t truly fat.
    _ _ _ _

Okay, I was talking about earth, thanks – not hollywood, and I could have made that more clear sorry… I was referring to legitimately obese and scary skinny.

I don’t for one second condone the harassment celeb women receive for eating a cheeseburger and then having a million people swear she’s knocked up or just letting herself go.

My point is that in my non-celeb world, MY EXPERIENCE has been that people are more comfortable insulting or criticizing or offering unsolicited help to very thin people to their faces than doing the same to very fat people. I’m NOT saying it NEVER happens.

  51. Enonymous says:

Zoe (The Other One), you have missed my point. This girl went to a beauty contest because SHE thought she was pretty enough and I don’t know the rules and regulations about these contests but the judges though the same as her and so they let her compete, fair enough. So now, who are we to so harshly judge her and criticize her on her decision, she did not win so that should make some people happy at least. My point is that if she was a “curvy” women people would have applauded her bravery and patted her on the back for embracing her curves. Why the doublestanders then, why would you deny a skinny girl which some of you branded her unfairly “a disgusting anorexic” but be so vastly offended when others don’t particulate prefer fat girls/boys the same way. hypocrite, much?

As some of you might feel that a thin person might promote an unhealthy body image, That is how and many others feel about overweight people. We should not split hair and criticize (me included) but find a way to promote a really healthy, natural body image with out the unnecessary harsh criticisms on those who might not fit in that category but the way we are headed now, it just seems that they are favoring overweight people and alienating the thinner ones.

  52. ChristinaT says:

while i may have sounded harsh, i didn’t mean to criticize the average thin female. i’m simply getting annoyed at how irresponsibly these very sick and unhealthy body types are being displayed as the standard of beauty… frankly, i’m a tad ticked off.

the fact of the matter is that all these super thin celebrities are not helping the obesity epidemic, they simply work to make people fat AND unhappy…

i only have one friend who sounds as self righteous about weight as you do, and while she may think she’s just defending thin people against the “bitter fatties”, the truth is, nobody really likes her that much, not even the skinny ones.

  53. Enonymous says:

anna, very well put it. I totally agree.

  54. RhymesWithSilver says:

I don’t actually think she’s unhealthy. She’s a beanpole- if she were in a basketball jersey, it’d be different.

  55. Buckley says:

disease or not, she simply is not pretty.
    Looks awful in my opinion.
Head looks massive compared to her body

  56. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Enonymous – I’m struggling to understand your point due to your spelling and grammar.

You seem to be simply reiterating my point that she’s chosen to be in the competition. Regardless of whether these people are fat or thin they are choosing to put themselves up for public scrutiny and therefore cannot complain when the public scrutinises them and criticises them for perceived faults. It’s called public opinion. There is no double standard.

You also fail to discuss the fact that this woman/Keira/Lindsay et al are ALL clinically underweight and how you feel it’s any different for clinically underweight people to be lauded and ‘left alone’ when it’s OK to hold up obesity as a genuine disease. That IS a double standard.

And I fail to understand why it’s unacceptable, to you personally, that people criticise her or anyone seeking public acceptance for being too thin yet it’s OK for you to criticise people (people here on this website too, not random people in the public eye) for being bitter and fat. Again, another example of double standard.

I believe the hypocrite is you.

  57. Vanu says:

Enonymous- You’re not helping yourself, you seem to have a real problem with overweight people.

I’ve got a a few friends who are naturally really slender and eat whatever they like. Plus, Macadonians and Croatians (Serbians, too, I think) are known for being tall and slender- just like Russians are.

  58. Enonymous says:

I am not going to lie, I am biased because of what happened to my friend (on more then one occasion and humiliated in public no less), and how the media is dealing with the weight issue but I am also fair. I don’t particularly favor fat or thin people or whatever, but overweight people can’t play the victims anymore then turn around and criticize others. You would think they would know how it feels to be unfairly criticized by other people about something they can’t help and be more sympathetic but all it seems to have done is turn them more bitter about it all.

  59. OhPlease says:

Oh Lord…. My best friend is severely overweight and another friend is “medically malnourished and anorexic”…. due to a thyriod problem. I will say the skinny girl gets ALOT more crap… to her face. My BBW friend gets more snarky half heard comments. But for a reader here say they have “no more sympathy” for people that are sick with bulimia and anorexia is ignorant and bitter. That’s the same as saying: “I have no more sympathy for fat people…. they are the ones shoveling burgers and cake down their throats” ummmm…. how about grow up? Some people have issues with food. Some eat too little b/c they don’t like themselves, and some eat too much b/c they don’t like themselves. It’s different sides of the same coin retards! How about empathy for people b/c they are obvisously struggling… leave yr own body issues out of it.

  60. Annie says:

My point is that in my non-celeb world, MY EXPERIENCE has been that people are more comfortable insulting or criticizing or offering unsolicited help to very thin people to their faces than doing the same to very fat people. I’m NOT saying it NEVER happens.

Yea. I’m inclined to agree. It’s just so much more taboo to point out the problems on a larger person than it is to note something about a smaller person.

I had an ex boyfriend that used to hand skinny girls sandwiches. Needless to say, we’re not together anymore.

  61. ChristinaT says:

Enonymous, i think you’re missing the point you ADOLESCENT! not everyone who is being critical is fat… moron!

  62. Kat says:

“Blah, Blah, Blah, people are picking on me because I’m thin, blah, blah, blah.”

Try having actual problems and then maybe I’ll give a rat’s ass. Until then eat a sandwich and STFU.

  63. ChristinaT says:

i’m sorry but you cannot deny that the discrimination fat people face is anywhere near the discrimination thin people face. even statistics show that thinner people have:
    1. more friends
    2. more frequent promotions
    3. better pay

    etc etc.

besides, if being thin was so horrible, why isn’t the diet industry making 40 billion a year trying to fatten people up?

anyway, back to the issue… the ridiculous standards of beauty imposed by the media

    *eyeroll*

  64. Enonymous says:

ChristinaT, What is up, why are you attacking me? You must be some kind of in the closet overweight person with a inner rage judging by your overly emotional rude comments. Well, this is for you baby, how about you kiss my perfectly shaped ass and never insult me unless I happen to insult you first.

  65. ChristinaT says:

i guess i have a thing about being called a “bitter fattie”… and you sound kind of whiney quite frankly…

  66. lola lola says:

    Uhm, Yuk…

  67. Trillion says:

Zoe, that “h8ers” comment still has me laughing…
Oh, and that girl looks like hell. I hope she can get up to at least 120 and fill out that bikini better.

  68. Orangejulius says:

That is the longest neck I have ever seen.

  69. She looks disgusting.

There’s naturally skinny, and then there is dangerously unhealthy. Bitch falls into the latter category.

She should eat a damn burger and put on a shirt if she feels “victimized” – not pander to beauty contests. Oh! But then how will she get all that global press? I mean she’s a pretty enough girl, but pretty enough for world-wide fanfare? Probably not. . . but with just enough scandal, someone is bound to print her face in the papers. . .

    Hello Miss World 2009.

And I’m sick and tired of the media trying to glamorize/defend blatant self-destruction. It’s insulting – do they really think we’re that stupid?!

Maybe I need to lay off the gossip blogs for a bit. I can feel my blood pressure rising at the sheer idiocy of it all.

  70. Cinderella says:

There is nothing cute about being 5’10 and 105 pounds.

  71. nina says:

Overweight people are a burden on the taxpayer, due to their persistent health problems. Skinny people – are not, since very few of them have weight-related health problems. So the two are really not equivalent. I got the “you need to eat more” comments countless times, and guess what? They were always made by people who complained about not being able to lose weight. Not everyone who is skinny is not eating or is unhealthy.

  72. Sparkle Plenty says:

How could she win Miss Australia? The popular image of a healthy, robust, shrimp-on-the-barbie Aussie sheila doesn’t square with this concentration camp look.

BUT she beat out all the competition and the judges agreed she was the best in show. I’d love to see pix of the rest of the contestants because I wouldn’t pick this gal for anything that involves a demanding schedule.

  73. Wif says:

Nina, dangerously obese people are a burden on the taxpayer, so are the dangerously underweight. Have you ever seen the kind of treatment that an anorexic or bulemic needs? I have and it’s astounding.

  74. Samantha says:

You don’t want your body criticized, then DONT advertise it to the world! Simple. Going for a title like Miss UNIVERSE of course people are going to comment on your body, that is what those competitions are all about. So eat a cheeseburger and get over it.

  75. TM says:

The only thing I really have to comment on – she IS NOT Miss Australia – She was a finalist only, she did not win. Wouldn’t have taken much to get those facts straight! 😉

The rest has pretty much already been said, YUK and yes she would have to have an eating disorder to look like that.

  76. AD says:

Macedonians have a distinguished and strong bone structure and hardly look skinny or small. They are actually athletic when not overweight and quite corpulent when they gain weight. The good news is that they hardly ever get super fat because of the large bones. So everything but tiny bones in our heritage. Perhaps she’s one of those rare small boned bodies that grew very tall too.

  77. CeeJay says:

Gotta say I have to agree with Enon and Annie. As a naturally skinny gal (until I had 3 little ones) I can tell you that it is absolutely true that skinny people receive unsolicited “advice” and rude comments from people all the time. I come from a family of 11 kids myself and nearly every one of us was tall and thin. Those who knew the family didn’t think anything of our thinness because they knew it was a family trait. However, when I moved away from home and went to college, and even after, I was consistently accused of having an eating disorder and starving myself. My closest friends would laugh when they’d hear a rumor here and there because they all knew I was the first one to go back for seconds and thirds at just about any buffet!! The truth is that no matter what I said or how much I ate I still received rude comments from people, usually those who were a bit overweight themselves. One of my closest friends in college was a very obese girl who totally struggled with the same sorts of problems, so I’m not claiming it’s not a two way street. Just backing up the folks here who have tried to tell some of you that thinness is not a disease and does not always mean you have an eating disorder or emotional issues.

  78. pokkeme says:

She’s not Miss Australia, she’s one of the State or regional finalists. She didn’t make the top ten BECAUSE she was so skinny. Rachael Finch won the title of Miss Universe Australia. She is gorgeous, but getting no press. Figures…

  79. EJ says:

I’m skinny, been my whole life.My mother was skinny until she gave birth to 4 children. I agree with CeeJay i hate when people look at me like i’m sick or something and tell me all the time that i should eat. I do eat alot more that most of the people i know but i’m very active all the time probably why i’m thin.Once an old and fat lady was talking behind my back that i’m sick or something???Seriously??I was like 13,14 and honestly that scared me for life. Should i have turned and said to her that she is sick because she is fat?? Being fat is not a disease but being skinny is? I’ve like never said to someone thats overweight “Hey you’re sick!Look how fat are you!Stop eating that much!Loose weight!!!”.

  80. luckystar says:

I think 5-10 pounds would help her tremendously. In that industry you can’t be overweight, but she is too thin in my opinion. And beyond the aesthetic, there are all sorts of physical ramifications to consider. The female body doesn’t function normally when it is too thin.

  81. luckystar says:

Wow, I just read another comment. She does have a long neck.

  82. Cadiebelle says:

The Australian girl is very thin – but by the shape of her body and length of torso & arms etc – I think she is just naturally thin – some people are naturally very thin – beauty comes in all shapes & sizes. Stop hating.

  83. sissoucat says:

    I’m with Megan.

She’s too skinny to be beautiful, whatever the origin of her skinny.

Why did she become finalist in Australia ?

  84. barneslr says:

How did she even make it this far in a beauty contest? There is nothing beautiful about being emaciated.

To those of you making the “oh, she’s just naturally thin” argument…wrong. 5’10” and 105 lbs is not natural. One must work very hard to starve their body that much. She probably does have an eating disorder.

In any event, it is a BEAUTY contest and regardless of the reasons for her emaciated, gaunt and unhealthy appearance, she is NOT beautiful. She looks sickly. I hate to think of girls looking at her as the standard to which they should aspire.

  85. Cadiebelle says:

If she is “too skinny” to be in a beauty pageant – then fat people SHOULD be required to buy 2 plane tickets. Discrimination is discrimination – and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  86. Don'tStopBecause says:

OK, I’m a little late to this post, so all the ‘fat’ vs ‘thin’ (and the ‘inner/outer fatties’ vs ‘inner/outer thinnies’) arguments are a bit… eehh?!? I am surprised that no one really seems to have yet pointed out just how INSANE this beauty pageant crap is in the first place.

OK, but aside from that, this chick needs some food, fast. She certainly didn’t look like this a few weeks ago – when she got whatever-bullshit-craptackular-I-look-prettier-than-you-but-not-if-it-offends-middle-America-beautycrown-that-lets-Donald Trump-touch-my-arse-beauty-pageant. As according to the Townsville Bulletin website photos (http://tools.townsvillebulletin.com.au//photo-gallery/photo_gallery_popup.php?category_id=2195&offset=17) she had actual hips and flesh not stuck to her ribs… Not surprised, but… I see bulimic people…

  87. lisa says:

She needs to keep her clothes on and stay out of the competitions if she does not want to be criticized. Plain and simple. She is super thin, but then so are lots of people.

  88. ! says:

She should just shut up and get victimized by a sandwich. I’m so sick of hearing about “skinny people” problems. Just shut the fuck up. You think you can’t gain weight? Eat half a pizza and drink a six pack of beer right before you go to bed. Every night. Six weeks in a row. THEN tell me you can’t gain weight…Jesus Christ.

And to all those defending her may I remind you that her BMI is lower than that of many women who have died from their eating disorders.

Shiny hair? so what! I can get that out of a bottle, that doesn’t mean she’s healthy!

  89. Hanh says:

Ok they give us skinny Asian girls a bad rap. I know skinny Asian girls, and none of them have their RIBS sticking out like that! No matter HOW thin they are if they are NATURALLY thin they will not have bones sticking out.

If you’re naturally thin your bones aren’t going to stick out like a malnourished child. That’s a clear sign of starvation.

She’s starving herself via portion control thinking that’s “healthy”.

  90. Vanu says:

Some of the comments like “she should shut up and just eat a sandwich” are plain ignorant.

There are plenty of people who eat constantly and can’t put on weight, just like there are plenty of overweight people who can’t lose weight due to thyroid problems, hormone imbalances like pcos or adrenal function problems. People should really think about commenting on someone’s weight unless they know their eating habits, medical history, etc.
Btw, ChristinaT, I know this is ‘Celebitchy’ but you take the aggression a little too far.

  91. Lauri says:

“…Discrimination is discrimination – and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Anyone who considers a woman that emaciated to be beautiful is a sicko. We aren’t talking a little thin here…this woman is emaciated to the point where she could, very literally, die very soon from her lack of nutrition. There’s no question that her muscles and organs are wasting from her obvious extreme anorexia.

And if she is putting herself forth as an example of beauty, how is it “discrimination” for people to judge her based on her looks? If this were a random, private citizen just going about her business being criticized, I would agree with you. But she deliberately put herself forward as an example of what she thinks “beauty” is supposed to be…so of course we are judging her by her appearance. That goes with the territory if you enter beauty contests!

  92. Amy says:

I had a very skinny friend who had trouble putting on weight, so they do exist. And yes, she was treated horribly and actually felt insulted by the word “skinny,” much like you and I would about the word “fat.”

However, it’s reasonable to think that a girl with these proportions on the freaking beauty pageant circuit is restricting her calories. She’s obviously body obsessed or it would never even occur to her to go parading around in a bikini for judges!

  93. mandy says:

I don’t care what ANYONE says.. I grew up dancing ballet, and struggled with anorexia for close to 8 years. This girl has an eating disorder! Look at that body, not a single bit of muscle tone. She’s not fooling me; I think it’s quite obvious.

  94. EJ says:

“Eat half a pizza and drink a six pack of beer right before you go to bed. Every night. Six weeks in a row. THEN tell me you can’t gain weight…”
Seriously after every dinner i eat pica or donuts or pasta and drink a glass of milk i use to drink proteins did i got weight???No i didn’t. It’s just cruel for you to say that

  95. FF says:

“So now, who are we to so harshly judge her and criticize her on her decision…”?

We’re people with brains enough to form a sentence and have an opinion, with access to keyboards and the internet.

Is there some kind of reason we’re not allowed to judge seeing as being in a beauty pageant does kind of INVITE qualitative judgement of and criticism about beauty and the standards held up as such?

Or are you following your previous arguement that ‘overweight, ugly people’ shouldn’t dare have an opinion and you’re lumping us all into that category because nobdoy else would ‘have the nerve’ to criticise someone for being ‘too skinny’?

Every time you comment in response to someone a whole host of your own judgements come to bear so it seems a bit rich ripping people for doing the same just because it’s the opposite of your own personal opinion.

  96. qit says:

There’s no way anyone could get more anorexic than that girl! She should be hospitalized

  97. Taylor says:

Annie, Anna, Christina and whoever else. I am a naturally skinny person who weighted under 100 pounds this year and ate all day. I was likely to be malnourished because it was junk food but I ate it because I liked how it tasted….

And Enonymous is right. I had people come up to me often and comment on my weight. I don’t see them saying it to over weight people’s faces, do you?
Yes she is very thin, I’ve met her, she beat me in the competition and yes I wondered why they would pick a girl with nothing to put in a bikini for a bikini contest and yes I did myself think she was doing it to herself intentionally but then later that year I was sick and lost so much weight and took me a year to get back to 47 kilos (I’m short though) while eating constantly that I realised being in the situation myself it is perfectly feasible that she does eat enough.
I have been under 50 kgs my entire life and look much the same as when I was 14 except I was lucky to grow a great set of boobs that make me look bigger than I really am. If I were flat chested I know people would comment on my thin frame much more often, completely ignoring the fact that I’m only 5’3 and have a tiny skeleton anyway.

The only thing that actually made me put on weight was EATING LESS.
I started a full time job and only had time for 2 meals a day and put on 5 KILOS in THREE WEEKS after struggling to gain weight for a year!
I still have people comment on my weight rudely though even though I look perfectly healthy.
My father is 45 and looks like a lean 20 something athlete.
It is possible that her body is entirely genetic.
Although I’d say she does watch what she eats.
Honestly, it is out of line to comment on her diet as we just don’t know. But yes, I think she looks ugly so thin and it’s not a good image to put out there because I’m aware of the effort a lot of my friends put in to try and be almost as slim as me and not even reach it.
I’ve been a model since I was 9 years old. My agency has never ever ever told me I was to lose weight because I was already proportioned the way they wanted when I came to them at age 16.
They have told others to lose weight but that’s because they won’t get the work if they don’t.
Modeling and acting etc is a choice. If you don’t want to lose weight you don’t have to. But don’t expect clients to book you if you don’t fit their sample clothing.
I have the opposite problem. “cause I’m a shortie I also have tiny hips even with fat on the so I’m automatically too small for the clothes but I do tv ads instead which don’t mind girls with some meat.
If you insist on trying to be a runway model than you must prepare to have to fit into the sample size. They don’t change them just for you unless you are already famous.
It’s a choice. Even as a child I knew I had a choice. The industry can’t be blamed. Ego and weakness of your own mind is what makes people cave when they don’t enjoy it….

  98. shirley says:

its better to be underweight and heathy than overweight and have clogged aterys its called naturally skinny medias trying to sell oh these people are to skinny because people are starting to get fat and medias putting overweight is okay and underweight is horrible.
