This is going to sound lecherous, but I could stare at Serena Williams’ body all day long. She is so athletic and strong and beautiful. As I get older, I appreciate the athletic physique more, do you know what I mean? When I was younger, I would see those slim models and that would be the goal, but at my age now, I would prefer to look like Serena. I’d rather be strong. Serena covers the September issue of Self Magazine following her now-historic 22nd Grand Slam win at Wimbledon last month. She’s calling this The Summer of Serena, and she hopes to win gold, again. Because chica already had four Olympic gold medals and she wants a fifth. You can read the full Self piece here. Some highlights:
Her philosophy: “I am who I am. I love who I am. Just that whole attitude of being strong and powerful—that’s something I can get behind.”
The importance of her Olympic medals: “If I could grab one thing in a fire it would be my gold medals.”
She’s still #1 & she still wants to win: “It’s always been, like, bring it on—and more…I’m a little more calm. But at the same time, I’m even hungrier to win. This is my heart. This is my blood. I live for this and have for the last 32 years. When I step out on the court, you’re going to get all of me…It’s going to be the summer of Serena. I know it.”
Oversharing on social media: “I wish people didn’t know I slept with a teddy bear, but now they do. It’s out there.”
Body criticism: “I love my body, and I would never change anything about it. I’m not asking you to like my body. I’m just asking you to let me be me. Because I’m going to influence a girl who does look like me, and I want her to feel good about herself.”
Empowerment: “I have this platform that other people don’t have. I think it’s important, especially as a woman, to stand up for who you are and what you believe in—and not back down.”
The cameo in Beyonce’s Lemonade: “I was nervous. But Beyoncé was impressed. I was like, ‘Well, you told me to dance like no one was looking!’ ”
What Venus means to her: “Venus is the best. I look up to her, and I always wonder, if I was the older sister, would I have set the good example that she set for me? I hate playing Venus. She’s the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced.”
An African-American pioneer: “I can’t say I am the pioneer because it was Althea Gibson, it was Zina Garrison, it was Arthur Ashe, it was so many people before me… I appreciate being in a position where I was chosen to be a role model. Obviously, being black in tennis wasn’t easy, even in the ’90s.”
Where will she be in five years? “In five years, I’m on a boat or an island, sketching the latest collection. Maybe there’s a baby, maybe a couple, we’ll see. I’m done traveling—I’m throwing away my passport. Yeah, I’m done with it.”
She’s just all of the goals, isn’t she? I remember a time when Serena wasn’t quite so open with talking about politics, race, sexism and more. I think she went through a phase in her early years where her message seemed to be: just judge me on the tennis. But then as she got older, she grew into her role as advocate, pioneer and activist. And people like her even more for it. This made me tear up a little too: “I’m not asking you to like my body. I’m just asking you to let me be me. Because I’m going to influence a girl who does look like me, and I want her to feel good about herself.”

“I’m not asking you to like my body. I’m just asking you to let me be me. Because I’m going to influence a girl who does look like me, and I want her to feel good about herself.”
Go, Serena!
In a very different way, I kinda feel like that myself. I’m not asking anyone to admire my complete lack of interest in fashion, beauty, or appearance in any way. I couldn’t care less if I get mocked for it either. But somewhere out there, are kids who are also interested in other things and not what they look like. And they should be allowed to be like that without being put down or crushed.
And besides that, it’s beyond me that anyone thinks she DOESN’T look fantastic.
Right? I mean, that body is insane. Those ABS!
+1 to every thing you said.
That line had the hair on my arms standing on end – my typical reaction to well-stated essential “truths”. She put that so, so well in that she expresses something that embraces every aesthetic category and alienates none. It’s what the phrase “real women have curves” wants to be.
Love her so much.
And yes, she’s stunning. I love her in Beyonce’s video.
I was about to write that: why would she even feel the need to say that? Her body is nothing short of amazing, both in appearance, and in what she trained it to accomplish!
You beat me to it! I LOVE that quote and it should be applied to everyone. If someone isn’t hurting ‘you’ or others, why do we care how someone looks and feel the need to criticise them?
Her face looks more like Venus here.
This is one of their best covers, ever. I guess we have to expect that they’ve still photoshopped her somewhat, but I am so happy to see a muscular woman portrayed this way – and I love the swimsuits.
She has an incredible body. Mr. Crowhood and I were at a diner eating breakfast and she was playing. We realized we hadn’t spoken in ten minutes because we were just in awe of her and her athleticism. He was also probably in awe of her body for other reasons as well 😉
Serena is amazing on and off the court.
Serena is a damn Queen. That is all.
Yes, there’s nothing more to be said, she is a queen. I absolutely loved the quote about Venus, maybe because I’ve always wondered how it would be to have her as your opponent and then go back home to mama as sisters. I love that she looks up to her and sees her as a role model. It got me teary eyed with all the feels!
She looks AMAZING. I’d rather look like her than a waify model (and I say that as someone who was very lanky and underweight in my teenage years). More importantly she comes across really genuine and nice, I’ve never read any interviews with her but she seems humble and grounded. There’s a lot of people who could do with taking a leaf out of her book!
I got teary-eyed too!!!!! And I love to hear her cherish her gold medals. I’ve heard some athletes are like meh another one, cool. As if it doesn’t mean as much as national tournaments or league titles or something. She’s the best.
I love her body too. She earned every muscle and looks fierce.
GO Serena! I love her body. My husband does too and is flabbergasted whenever he hears that people think she’s too manly looking. Anyway whatevs, she stays slaying.
I don’t like that that they photoshopped her thighs but at least they didn’t get too zealous with it. I’m loving the pics and comments in this interview.
who wouldn’t want to look like Serena? she is poetry in motion. such a beautiful woman. she is also so articulate, a true icon.
I totally agree! She looks healthy and has clearly worked very hard to get where she is.
LOVE HER!!
So. Much. Love.
She is amazing, incredible, smart, beautiful, talented. Just wow. I love her.
That woman….. She’s just amazing in every way. Some people have actually made negative remarks about her body? What? Can’t they SEE?
I admire her talent, grace, strength and confidence. Now that is a role model.
These pics are good, the makeup is very nice, hair too. She looks very long and lean compared o what I remember from other pics. Can’t remember if it was featured here but her 73 questions was alright! Generally 73 questions doesn’t annoy me though..
YAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSS BITCH YSSASSSSS *severe Stankface!!!* These Abs this hair!!!! GOD!!!! Looking Freshly carved outta Ebony!! COME F*CKING THROUGH DAUGHTER OF RICHARD AND ORACENE SISTER OF VENUS!!!

Maaaaaan this girl is something else.
what an amazing role model!!!
here is someone young girls can look up to….
hard work and achievement
not the kardashian fake, plastic poseless group….
go serena!!!
She is a beautiful woman with and amazing body.
It’s a pity her wonderful message is not fully understood by those who feel the need to pick on models.
Many of them work just as hard on their bodies. Being slender or not having a sixpack doesn’t mean you are not strong.
There are thousands of young girls with different bodies out there. it should be possible to make them all feel good about their bodies
I aspire to that BOD as well. God, what I would give for abs like those. I hope she gets another gold and the summer of Serena is on, baby!
Here to Join the Serena fan train as well! Someone giver her a clothing endorsement deal ASAP
Ditto. What other female athlete is this inspiring?
Her and the WNBA ladies are killing it.
plus her abs. dear lord. do you think she does crunches forever, or just holds plank in her sleep?
What an amazing message to put out there!!!
Ditto.
On all fronts.
I am in total awe of this broad.
Her athleticism, her mind, her strength, her drive, her body, and her everything.
She’s effin awesome all around (if not the greatest of all time).
I recently watched the 73 questions with her on vogue and she’s lovely. Charming too. Even though this particular show can come off as very contrived, Serena manages to be as genuine as possible imo.
She looks amazing and I love the photoshoot!
