Anne Hathaway in Rodarte at the TIFF ‘Colossal’ premiere: strange or cute?

I never really think of the Toronto International Film Festival as a go-to fashion event. For sure, some good fashion moments happen at TIFF, but for the most part, TIFF is about the movies, which is as it should be. I doubt many celebrities are like, “I need to find a great dress for TIFF!” Which is my explanation for these Anne Hathaway photos. Anne attended the premiere of her new film, Colossal. This is what she wore – a Rodarte Fall 2016 look. Hathaway doesn’t work with Rachel Zoe as her stylist anymore, but I’m sure Anne either has a new stylist or she just speaks directly to designers at this point. I wonder how this came about – did she just call up Rodarte and ask for one of the weirdest looks? Like, there are so many different strange parts all thrown together, the floral midsection, the lace bust and sleeves, the gold bejeweled trim, the tiered skirt. Just pick one design and do that for the whole dress, maybe?

As for Anne’s film, Colossal, it sounds like a huge trip. Vulture tried to explain it – it’s about a woman (Anne) who gets drunk and in her drunken state, she turns into a giant monster who destroys Seoul, South Korea. Seriously, that’s the plot.

What else? Anne chatted with People Mag about her “post-baby body.” Anne has been talking about that since she gave birth in March – she seems to be doing everything at her own pace, which is totally fine and normal, but I would imagine that living in LA and the pressures of being “red carpet ready” at all times is probably pretty rough. Anne told People:

“I think shape is an ongoing thing in everybody’s life. So, I’m not trying to recapture something that was. I’m going with what it is now. Some things I guess are the same as they were, and other things are a little bit different. I’m just so proud of what the changes signify. So, there’s no rush to do anything. I’m so happy being here. I find that my workout is really different now because I gave birth. I feel like doing burpees now after having a baby is zero big deal.”

[From People]

The fact that a woman who just gave birth five or six months ago even feels the need to DO burpees says something about the demands we put on women to “get back” their body. I hope Anne just does what makes her comfortable. And I hope she doesn’t get 20 million questions about her body. Enough. But do ask her about the dress. The dress is awful.

The dress, ugh. But she looks beautiful…her skin, hair, coloring.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Yeah, she is so beautiful, and her makeup is great and hair that lenght suits her so well. The dress is hideous.

    • emilybyrd says:

Lord. I can’t even see past the hair to get to that dress. I wish someone would’ve told her to think twice before stepping out like that. It’s important to have people in your life who can tell you the truth!

    • ladysussex says:

She looks so pretty with hair. I’m glad she grew it out.

  2. QQ says:

What in the busy All fabrics home craft milkmaid costume sh!t is this

Also this makeup.. Is like asking for Rosacea on purpose

    • detritus says:

Alicia Vikander is now quietly weeping to Fassbender because she didn’t snag this first.

I don’t mind the makeup, it’s heavy but not Aquilera heavy, the hair though…. that hairdo is classic 7 year-old wants to be fancy, it just needs the fluffy slippers and princess tiara.

    • Janetdr says:

The dress is the worst thing g I have ever seen! The only positive thing I can say is at least it’s not see through…….

  3. Melody says:

You ever lose some weight and make a ton of poor fashion choices because you’re so excited to show off your body?

Anne likes her new booty. Let’s hope she calms down.

  4. Josefina says:

I definitely want to watch this movie.

  5. everlyB says:

The dress is truly ugly. Looks like budget maid on Halloween. What was she thinking?

  6. HeidiM says:

Maybe its a situation where she is not a sample size right now, and this is what they gave her?

  7. Jenns says:

Is there anything else to ask a woman after she has a baby? I feel like when famous women give birth, the next few years are devoted to nothing but baby, baby, post-baby body, baby, baby, post-baby body…

  8. Hannah says:

It’s a little busy, there’s a lot going on, and the hair is limp and not great. But she doesn’t annoy me like she used to.

  9. Erinn says:

I hate the dress. But I think her hair looks best at this length, and the color is very nice. I think her makeup would be perfectly nice if they toned down on the blush, or reddish toned bronzer – it’s a bit too distracting – there’s something just a bit ‘off’ about the color.

She’s grown on me, post baby.

    • Angelica says:

+1. I’m just happy to see a calmer, less “Me, win an Oscar? Stop you’re too kind! But seriously I need that Oscar” version of Anne. The dress is awful, but she’s carrying herself well, and she looks so healthy for some reason. Does that make sense? Ah well, I’m agreeing with you. She’s grown on me too.

I am so glad that my grandmother’s lace tablecloth, her guest bedroom quilt, and her bedroom curtains have all found a new home in Anne’s dress!

  11. moon says:

She looks great! And can I just add, I love that she’s not one of those hypocritical women who complain about baby weight but look like a VS model immediately after, she’s walking the talk.

  12. wendy woo says:

Can I talk about the fact that, when I first saw these photos, I thought “Wow, they’re using 2007 circa photos for Anne in lieu of current ones”.

Most importantly though, as a woman who hasn’t and probably won’t ever have a baby- the fact that you are able to leave the house and stand upright when something (other than a hangover) is screaming at you at 3am- is the ACTUAL miracle of childbirth. Immediately tune out ANYONE who says otherwise.

    • Livvers says:

Agreed re: the photos, I thought the same thing when I saw them on another site yesterday. The makeup is out of date and the hairstyle makes her look so much younger, while the dress is straight from the Ella Enchanted era. I am confused, but encouraged. My own clothes are always 10 years past (from lack of funds, though) so next time I dress up in something I bought 15 years ago I’ll just tell myself I’m doing Anne Hathaway cosplay.

Edit: This isn’t meant to be a lefthanded compliment of Hathaway either! Everything she is doing here is a little off, but as a total look I think she looks wonderful? My brain is confused but encouraged.

  13. Rocio says:

The dress should be burnt. On the contrary she looks amazing, more beautiful than ever. Maternity agrees with her.

  14. Miss Gloss says:

Her post baby bod looks great. There should be no discussion. She’s not anorexic looking–good. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Anne Hathaway.

  15. chaine says:

I guess i’m i the minority cuz i do not hate this dress. i would take some scissors and cut off all but the first of the bottom tier of ruffles.

  16. Sasha says:

The milk-maid dress seems to be in fashion this season. Alicia wore a better version recently.
I like folk inspired dresses but designers need to do a better job.

  17. TreadStyle says:

    So bad.

  18. gene123 says:

From the neck up, thats the best she looked in awhile. I cant stand the dress and I wish she had chosen something different because she looks amazing for just having a baby

  19. Angelica says:

Idk if I’m in the majority here but I’ve always been a fan of Anne, then wanted her to shut up because of the Oscars, but really wanted the quirky, cool girl, Anne back during that whole period, only to be a once again fan. I like the way she is right now for some reason. She looks good, comes off like she feels good and is super down-to-earth since being pregnant and having her baby. I’m glad she’s back!

  20. Starkiller says:

Deplorable. Rodarte is a joke, always has been, always will be. I haven’t the foggiest how they’re even still in business.

AnnE looks so much better with short hair. She has such an interesting face, and the short hair really makes her features pop. With her hair like this, she looks like every other girl on every college campus in America.

  21. Taxi says:

Horrible dress & the donut on top of her head is absurd. I see 4 year olds with this ‘do.
