Ivana Trump has some thoughts about immigrants giving birth to US citizens

wenn23860041

Some days, I wonder what Ivana Trump thinks of her ex-husband’s presidential campaign. Ivana is, I believe, Donald’s smartest (ex)wife, and they apparently still have a decent relationship. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Donald still talks to Ivana about everything in his life, from his business to his marriage to Melania and more. Much like Ivanka’s status as his favorite child, Ivana is his favorite wife. Well, thankfully, someone asked Ivana what she thinks about Donald’s loosey-goosey immigration plans to “build a wall” and deport millions of people.

Ivana Trump is backing her ex Donald Trump on his immigration stance.

“I agree with him on immigration,” the Czech-born socialite told us at Dennis Basso’s show this week. “I think the Mexican people — and people who are immigrants — are fine because [they] are good workers and good people. But they have to come here legally and they have to speak at least a little English and pay the taxes.”

Ivana added: “I disagree when an 18-year-old girl climbs over the border and she’s pregnant and gives birth, and the kid becomes automatically American . . . Who is paying for food and hospitality?” she continued. “Us, Americans. As long as they are here legally, it’s fine.”

[From Page Six]

Since I was curious, I did look into Ivana’s immigration history. She was born in what was then Czechoslovakia (behind the Iron Curtain), and she married an Austrian to get out of the country, then she went to Canada, where… it’s questionable that she had any kind of legal status to be there. Then she married Trump in 1977, but didn’t become an American citizen until 1989. Which means that she was NOT an American citizen when she gave birth to Ivanka, Eric or Donald Junior. Meaning… Donald Trump’s three oldest kids were Ivana’s anchor babies. SERIOUSLY. And now she has the audacity to sit there and complain about how American citizenship is conferred on every child born to an immigrant within our borders? Are you joking?

PS… I just realized that my father wasn’t an American citizen when I was born too, he only became a citizen when I was like 2 or 3 years old. My God… I’m an anchor baby too!

Uh. That dress. Uuug. Her views. Just… Delusional.

  2. ladysussex says:

Nope. If their father is American, they aren’t “anchor babies”, and Ivana was not here illegally just because she wasn’t yet a citizen. That’s like saying Emily Blunt’s children are “anchor babies”.

    • deezee says:

      Agree

    • Susan says:

An anchor baby is so named not because it simply confers citizenship on the baby but because it provides an “anchor” for the non-US parent, i.e. It provides a strong tie for the immigrant parent to remain in the US to care for their American child. In that sense, the Trump children *are* anchor babies with respect to Ivana Trump but are not anchor babies with respect to Donald Trump.

      • burnsie says:

        Thank *you*. +1 Susan.

      • sherry says:

Nope. Ivana was married to Donald when she had her three kids, which automatically grants her legal status. That’s why they crack down on the Green Card marriages of convenience (people who marry American citizens just so they can stay in the country legally).

The Trump children could in no way be considered “anchor babies.”

An anchor baby is a child born on US soil to a person who is in this country illegally. The baby is automatically given birthright citizenship simply for being born on US soil. Once the baby is a US citizen, it’s mother (parents) are able to stay here legally and obtain government benefits for their family.

      • bluhare says:

Marriage does not automatically grant legal status to the best of my knowledge. You still have to apply for it if you don’t already have permanent resident status.

I’m a permanent resident alien who married a US citizen and I can still get deported if I commit a crime.

      • Violet says:

        @Susan

If the non-US parent is a legal resident of the US at the time of the birth, the baby is not considered an ‘anchor.’

    • Violet says:

      @ladysussex

      Exactly.

      • Susan says:

That’s fine Violet if that is the case but that is not what the original commenters were saying And which I was saying was incorrect. The original commenters said it was not possible for the Trump children to be anchor babies because their father is American. That is false.

  3. minx says:

She dresses and wear her hair as she did during the glory years of the late 80s. Except, you know, we all age.

  4. Nilo says:

    Smartest ex-wife? If so…ugh!

  5. QQ says:

She is exactly the type of Immigrant that passes for “white” so to speak in this country and that then in an effort to Model Minority themselves and assimilate and not be called out take on that stupid WASPY respectable values B*llshit which basically covers up how they came to be

    • K2 says:

One of my stepmothers has parents who escaped to Australia from behind the Iron Curtain. They turned up unable to understand a word of English, much less speak it. Yet they are vehement supporters of Pauline Hanson, who if anything is worse than Trump. She doesn’t want any immigrants allowed to step foot on Aussie shores unless they are fluent English speakers, and that’s just for a start.

It’s just so weird – they have a need to feel Really Australian by Othering recent and hopeful immigrants, as if they themselves were native born and indeed as of the whole damn country isn’t built on immigrants, even including the Aboriginal population if you go back enough thousands of years. And yet they see no contradiction at all.

      • Locke Lamora says:

What’s also interesting about people who emigrated from my country, especially those who emigrated to Australia or the US is that they tend to be much more right wing than people back home, even on domestic issues. The diaspora vote always, and I mean always elects MPs from right wing parties, they are much more religious etc.

But wasn’t that always the case with immigrants who came first? I read somewhere that in Britain the Irish didn’t want Asians to come, the the Asians didn’t want Eastern Europeans to come etc.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

That’s normal though. It’s always the second-weakest ones who stomp on the weakest. Because they don’t ever want to be relegated to that place again. It’s like women being extremely harsh on female rape victims. A way to distance yourself from someone very much like yourself in whose position you don’t want to be at all costs.

She’s a gross old hag and not because of that … styling. But while we’re at it, what exactly has she accomplished in her life except pay for her plastic surgeon’s new car?

    • idontknowyouyoudontknowme says:

I get the rationale, but not sure of the passes as white comment. Why would an Eastern european be anything but white?

  6. Abigail says:

Not smart enough to keep from doing THAT to her face.

  7. Pedro45 says:

As someone who teaches ESOL to adult immigrants, the casual “oh, they should speak English” is both infuriating and laughable. Do they know how hard it is to learn a new language as an adult? Some of my students (all women, mostly low-income) did not even go to school in their own countries and are illiterate in their own languages. Those women are literally starting from zero. But they are trying, for themselves and their children. Some are citizens, some are not, but all are brave, in my opinion.

    • ladysussex says:

To be fair, she said “at least a little English”.

      • Pedro45 says:

Which is still hard to learn, as an adult, if you never went to school as a child. How much English is “a little”? My students aren’t models from Europe, they are from Somalia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and other extremely poor countries.

    • Delta Juliet says:

      Yes, very brave! I agree.

    • Konspiracytheory says:

Pedro45, love your comment – your students are lucky to have you.

      • Pedro45 says:

Thanks, Konspiracy. I love it but it breaks my heart. I registered a new Somali student the other day who apologized to me that she had never been in school and mourned the time she had lost. It killed me. The number of Haitian women who lost everything and everyone they loved in the earthquake is staggering. I can’t imagine moving to another country at my age and learning the language and culture, all while being denounced by people like Trump. And yes, my Somali students have all been spit on or harassed in some way for wearing hijab.

TL;DR: Building a new life in the U.S. is hard.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Yes, she did say that. And Petro45 said something really nice about newcomers who struggle to learn a new language. Anyone who says, “Speak English!” should be automatically registered in night school regardless of dependents (old and young) and attempt to learn a different language to see what it’s like.

    • Birdix says:

My Honduran ex tried so hard to learn English. But just couldn’t, in his case because of dyslexia. Super successful as a photographer though and ended up going to Spain.

      • Pedro45 says:

Yes, this is so common. I am not really trained in learning disabilities and the organization I work for is a charity, so it can be frustrating for both teacher and student. We don’t have the resources to help some students as much as we would like.

    • LadyAnne says:

      Beautiful comment. And so true.

    • me says:

If Trump wins he’s probably going to stop funding for the classes you teach. He doesn’t care because he’s been rich his whole life and has no idea the struggle people go through. I agree, learning a new language as an adult is tough, but you should know the basics especially if you have kids. They need to communicate in case of emergency, etc. or be able to speak to their child’s teacher if their are issues. This is why they attend classes like yours. I just feel Trump won’t give a f*ck and will get rid of all the funding for ESOL, ESL, etc.

    • Dlo says:

Total respect and awe for you @pedro45 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏

    • minx says:

      Thank you, Pedro45.

    • brincalhona says:

Am I right in thinking that the USA doesn’t have an official language?

  8. Clare says:

Remember when she did that tv show…’Ivana find a great man’ or something to that effect?
that was her third strike; she doesn’t get to have an opinion any more. Sorry not sorry.

    • Jack Daniels is my patronus says:

So, because you disagree, she doesn’t get to have an opinion?

I don’t like her at all. I don’t agree with her. But I also don’t say things like that because she maintains her right to have an opinion, regardless of how many people disagree with it.

I have opinions that I know a lot of people disagree with, but it is incredibly insulting to say someone doesn’t get to have an opinion.

    • SunnyD says:

Remember this the next time someone doesn’t agree with you so your opinion becomes irrelevant.

She’s wrong, obviously. But you’re on the exact same level as her with that attitude.

  9. Dirty Martini says:

I actually agree with her from a policy perspective, The USA is one of the few countries (30 out of 194) in the world to have birthright citizenship. It was implemented in 1868 to allow the children of slaves brought to the US to be citizens. It’s outlasted that purpose.

And I’m all for legal immigration.

She probably is his smartest wife…..even though she married him.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Except…deciding who gets citizenship and who does not in countries that do not have jus soli citizenship is frequently a NIGHTMARE. Statelessness is a huge problem in some parts of the world simply because many countries do not automatically confer citizenship upon people born within its borders.

      • DIrty Marini says:

And the encouragement of illegal immigration through birth right citizenship is s huge problem in this country. The fact so few countries do it as a percent of the whole says something as well.

      • Violet says:

        @BearcatLawyer

On the flip side, automatic US citizenship by virtue of being born on US soil can also cause problems, especially if those babies end up living their lives outside of the US.

        http://www.bbc.com/news/35383435

    • Cee says:

The same in my country. You can’t deport ilegals because then you have to separate them from young children, or actually end up telling your citizens to leave their own country.
I’m only 2nd generation so I understand the need for jus soli citizenship. Not every country dates back so far in time to have a “blood” thing. We’re only 200 years old. Most of us are 2nd and 3rd generation of different european ethnicities and indigineous peoples.

    • Violet says:

      @Dirty Martini

      Agreed on all counts.

  10. daisyfly says:

Her children are just like their father, and a lot of her support for him stems from the fact that not doing so could alienate her from not only her children but her grandchildren as well.

  11. Littlestar says:

I like how their ideas of Mexicans are as immigrants and low income workers, says a lot about their point of view. Nothing wrong with being a low paid worker but it seems that is all they think of Mexicans as, like Kelly Osbourne’s comment (of course I’m paraphrasing) “if there’s no Mexicans who will clean our toilets?!” Uhm yeah we’re more than just labor, we’re human beings. And anyways there a millions of Mexicans who are US-born for generations, you know…ever since the US acquired parts of Mexico.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Frankly, both Cheeto Mussolini’s and Ivanarama’s denigration of immigrants and Mexican/Central Americans in particular irks me immensely. Newsflash: not all Mexican or Central American immigrants are monolingual and work in blue collar jobs, nor are they all in the U.S. illegally.

    • anon says:

How can Mexicans be US-born for generations? Doesn’t that make them Americans??

      • Ennie says:

They are Americans, but they are still viewed upon as “Hispanic”, and still people will be racist against them even if their families have been in the US for longer than some others, for example, the Trumps.

    • Cee says:

Like Eva Longoria who is like 9th generation or something.

  12. Ky says:

    Heavy Sigh……
    1) Mexican immigrants do in fact have income tax taken from their earnings. So they are paying into the system. I’ve got the insomnia and just finished that book by the actress from Orange is the New Black whose parents were deported when she was 14. It was a eye opening source of statistics.
    2) I had so much respect for her when she was not talking about him in public. I wonder why she decided to stop doing that.

  13. Lambda says:

Jesus, what’s next? Marla Trump talking against women who sleep with married men?

Can’t wait for this entire creepy clan to go away.

  14. perplexed says:

Did she actually say they have to be American citizens or that they just had to be here legally?(you could be on a student visa, a work visa, or be a permanent resident and still be legal).

I think she’s stereotyping Mexicans and possibly other immigrants, but from what I read in the excerpt I don’t know if she pushed her hypothetical policy as far as requiring that someone be a citizen.

Yeah, she dresses bad for someone with her kind of money.

  15. Ravensdaughter says:

OMG, is it possible that someone in that clan could look worse than the Donald? Apparently so…

  16. Jayna says:

Wow, she looks bad. I thought she had a drinking problem or was drunk at her last wedding with her boy toy. I can’t remember now.

  17. Sandy says:

These two, Donald and Ivana, never should have divorced. They look like twins now, down to the fake blond hair and garish, saggy faces. How does she get to look down on “immigrants” when she schtups every Italian playboy she can find? Same as Donald, who marries every Eastern European “model” he can! Both equally ignorant and abhorrent!

Meanwhile, notice that Ivana singles out the mothers of “anchor babies” as the wrong-doers? Same as Donald despising women who might take maternity leave. Not a thought to how one conceives!

  18. adastraperaspera says:

After Hillary wins, I am taking a really long hot shower.

  19. Esteph says:

My self and brothers are anchor babies too! Although my mom had been granted amnesty in the early 80’s, she did not become a legal U.S. citizen until I was about 19!

  20. Sparkles says:

Why do Mexicans come to these people’s minds when speaking about illegals? There are undocumented people from around the world here, not just Mexicans. I know people from Colombia, Ecuador, the U.K., who have overstayed their VISAs and are therefore here illegally. I wish they’d stop pointing the finger at Mexicans.

    • Ennie says:

many ignorant people call all hispanic/South American immigrant “Mexicans”… why? I have no idea.

  21. I Choose Me says:

Quick superficial questions, is it just me or has she been wearing that bump-it hairstyle for decades?

  22. Bread and Circuses says:

She looks really good for a woman her age.

I agree about the hypocrisy of her views versus her history, though.

  23. Aurelia says:

Babies born to non perm residents or citizens are not stateless. Their parents can apply through their own country to get thier children passports. They are eligable thorugh hereditary right.

  24. what's inside says:

Oh, Ivana, what happened???? You need a stylist for your public excursions because what you are wearing in that photo does not work at all. All I want for this country is for it to live up to the principles and morals that made it awesome. Is this too much to ask? Do we have to tear each other apart? Hillary or Donald are not my choices for president, but getting rid of the problems that dragging this country are.

  25. A Fan says:

My goodness, what happened to her face? She looks like Roberto Cavalli.

  26. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

You will never be Patsy Stone.

  27. Lizzieb says:

OMG, her face. My mom is 86 and looks way better than her. Please, please, please, I beg of everyone, vote for Hillary. I don’t think I could deal with 4 years of the utter crap coming from all of them. Ivanka and her brothers are idiots just like their mother and father.

  28. JuJuBee says:

It’s mind boggling to me when someone speaks against immigration with a thick ass Czech accent. Seriously! No need to single out Mexicans. It just goes to show how little you know about immigration policy. As for paying taxes, all undocumented immigrants pay taxes. There is no escaping it. As long as they are buying taxable items, putting gas in their cars, etc…they are paying taxes! On a petty note, she looks horrid and needs to stop dressing for the body she had in the 80’s.
