2017 Golden Globe TV nominations: who got recognized & who got snubbed?

westworld

I’m splitting up the Golden Globe nominations for film and television. This is the television-nomination post. Considering we’re living in the golden age of television, there was an embarrassment of riches for this year’s potential nominees, which means some hard choices had to be made and there are some significant snubs and WTFs in the TV categories. Here’s the list:

Courtney B. Vance
Riz Ahmed
Bryan Cranston
Tom Hiddleston
John Turturro

Transparent

Best Drama
The Crown
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld

Do you notice a trend? It’s hard to spot, but it seems like Game of Thrones has already peaked and now Westworld is ascending. I also think it’s interesting that after all of the talk about Stranger Things, the show didn’t get nominated for Best Drama nevermind, it totally got nominated, my bad. What else? Love for The Americans, at least with the actors. Love for Atlanta and Donald Glover. Still so much love for Veep. No love for Silicon Valley. Oh, and TOM HIDDLESTON. Boom! We’re going to get Hiddles at the Globes!!

    Yay for The Night Of!

  2. BengalCat2000 says:

Happy to see Rachel Bloom nominated for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. That show doesn’t get enough love.

    • Brittney Buckley says:

      She won last year!

      • BengalCat2000 says:

My friend just turned me onto it (I don’t get to watch a lot of tv) and have been watching when I see him once a week. I’m obsessed with her now, lol. As lucy2 said below, it is so unique and SO clever!

    • lucy2 says:

I’m glad to see her nominated again, sometimes the GG wins are a one time attention thing. The show is so unique and funny.

  3. paolanqar says:

Excuse me but WHERE TF is Anthony Hopkins????

Also, I really REALLY want GAme of Thrones to win… but now I love Westworld too. Decisions, decisions, decisions…

    • Nic919 says:

      Or Jeffrey Wright.
Liev Schreiber as Ray Donovan really is not close to the same level as either Hopkins or Wright in Westworld.

    • tegteg says:

Agreed! He was phenomenal in the show. WESTWORLD FOR ALL CATEGORIES

    • Jag says:

To me – and apparently I’m in the minority – I just thought Hopkins was playing the usual character that he plays. I like him in the part, but don’t see anything outstanding so far with what he’s done. /shrug

  4. Becky says:

Not that Laurie and Hiddleston’s performances weren’t good, but why is Tom Hollander repeatedly snubbed for TNM?

  5. Cool Character says:

This is us! So happy for Sterling K. Brown and Mandy Moore!!

  6. third ginger says:

Delighted for Hiddleston and Laurie. Unfortunately, I don’t think either has a chance. I would love to see Olivia Coleman win. She must be a national treasure in the UK.

  7. OSTONE says:

What about Milo V? Gilmore Girls: A year in the life?!

    • Tess says:

Um, that JUST came out. If GG:AYITL does get nominated for anything it’ll be next year. Also he was in the whole thing for probably ten minutes, maybe fifteen tops. I’m assuming this is a joke

    • OSTONE says:

My apologies, Milo V in this is us. Kelly Bishop in GG. And GG came out 20 days after the crown, so totally elegible.

  8. ell says:

i’m surprised the girl who plays eleven in stranger things got no nomination, she was amazing!

    • Tess says:

Yes! No love for Millie Bobby Brown?!

      • Soprana says:

that girl is EVERYWHERE. Talented kid, but highly overexposed (not her fault, I blame the parents)

      • Megan says:

I thought she was mesmerizing as Eleven, but I am delighted to Winona got a nom. I am, and will always be, her biggest fan girl.

    • Jesie says:

Given what came out about her family situation and them leeching off her, I’m hoping Hollywood has decided it’s a good idea to back off and not add to the problem.

      • Soprana says:

Oh wow, I had no idea about that. I knew I smelled a rat when she started showing up in those bank commercials

      • Bonzo says:

Yeah, Millie is everywhere because her parents *need* her to support their family. I worry about her becoming another Lindsey Lohan by the time she’s 18.

      • thaliasghost says:

wait what? Can’t find anything about that.

  9. Soprana says:

I’m a few episodes into Westworld, and I’m deliberating if I should stick with it. Does the pacing pick up at all in the season?

    • Tess says:

Stick with it! It’s so good and really does pick up!

    • NastyWoman` says:

It’s very nuanced. Stick with it. The pacing is deliberate.

    • Lightpurple says:

STICK. WITH. IT! The Evan Rachel Wood scenes do seem sluggish and repetitive but there is a reason for that. Thandie Newton, however, is EVERYTHING and her story moves along at a good pace.

    • tegteg says:

STICK WITH IT. There are SO many twists and the pace really picks up at the end. I was practically biting my nails. Excellent show. Thandie Newton and Anthony Hopkins deserve awards, and I’m quite disappointed Hopkins wasn’t nominated.

  10. Josefina says:

I was hoping GoT wouldnt be nominated. Last season was bloody awful (except for the last 2 episodes and the Hodor episode)

  11. Nancy says:

Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore totally snubbed. Jeffrey Dean Morgan nominated for Critics Choice Award but basically WD basically gets snubbed every year even though they’re the number 1 show on cable (and yes I know the ratings dropped, but they’re still number 1). As the orange crusader screamed out before he won, IT’S RIGGED!!!!

    • Juls says:

JDM is EVERYTHING! Every line he delivers, he’s mesmerizing. He has single -handedly breathed new life into a flailing program (yes I still watch). When Olivia slapped Negan and he said he wanted her 50% more, I lost it!

      • Nancy says:

Isn’t he?!!! I won’t spoil for those who didn’t watch last night, but it was the best episode, as well as last weeks of the season. For those whining things aren’t the same on the show, they aren’t, it’s better! I love the bromance between Daryl and Rick and I can’t say anymore or I’ll get yelled at for spoiling. Still walking with the dead…..except Rosita!!!

      • Nancy says:

I’m getting a bit obsessed, but JDM didn’t just get nominated for male guest star in drama, he WON! Lucille will be proud…lol

    • Juls says:

I loved last night’s episode. No spoilers…..but I love where they left it. Clearly the writers took criticism to heart. They tied things up with no crazy cliffhangers, but left me really excited for the second half of the season.

      • Nancy says:

Me too. They are following the comics closely. Last week’s episode about Carl was exactly how it was, as well as episode 1 which was 100 in the comics, everything Glenn went through on tv, mimicked the comics EXACTLY. It’s the Walking Dead, lol, not Andy of Mayberry. Last night was so cool except for the one incident which I’m sure you know I’m referring to. Not enough episodes, we have to wait till February! Like Negan would say, not cool!

  12. M.A.F. says:

I’m glad Blackish got in there and not Modern Family. Lets hope that continues.

  13. ib says:

Not sure how the actor who played churchill didn’t get a nod for The Crown. Though, GG never matter much to me. Overall, I have a suspicion that this year is going to be another #oscarssowhite despite the incredible selection of movies with black leads — or if the actors get nominated the movies themselves will still get snubbed.

  14. Soprana says:

And no love for Bojack Horseman? Everyone, go watch it over the holidays. I never took Will Arnett seriously as an actor before I saw it.

  15. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

YAAAY for ISSA RAE!!!! Insecure is one of the best shows of the year and she deserves this nom. I am so proud of her for sticking to her guns and creating the best show for her. I hope either Issa or Tracy get the win, but what do you wanna bet Julia is going to win yet again. Or SJP for that terribly boring Divorced.

Atlanta and Donald’s noms are a welcome surprise. Another amazing show that surpassed the hype for me. I cannot wait until next season.

Yay for Rami!!!! The second half of Mr. Robot really delivered.

Happy for Thandie!!! Long time fan of hers who is happy she is getting any recognition at all.

I liked last season a lot but GOT has never really deserved any of the noms that they have gotten past season one. I will only be watching the last two seasons because GRRM won’t finish the books. I want to find out what happens to Dany, Missandei, Greyworm, Bran, Davos, Brienne, and Cersei.

  16. kri says:

I’m here for Sterling K. Brown and Rami.

  17. Beatrice says:

No Viola Davis and no Tatiana Maslany makes me a little sad, to be honest, though I don’t know who they’d replace.

  18. tracking says:

Ron Cephas Brown = major snub in Best Supporting

  19. MI6 says:

GG nod for Tom Hiddleston 😁😁😁
So happy for him even if it’s not ISTL
I was in the wrong thread
    Yay!!! 👏🖒❤

    • Bonzo says:

If TayTay is releasing an album around that time, I wouldn’t put it past them to put in an appearance at the GGs for some column inches.

You heard it here first… your resident HiddleSwift skeptic. 🙂

      • MI6 says:

You know I adore you, Bonzo, but there’s no way on God’s green earth Mr. Hiddleston would take that hit just as he’s restoring his somewhat tattered media profile from the Summer of Tomf*ckery. 2016 will end on a high note for him, once again being seen only as the well-respected, enormously talented actor he is and not the prop of some delusional Pap Tart.

      • Lightpurple says:

        That’s not going to happen

      • Lacia Can says:

MI6 -lol at “tomf*ckery”. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s offered another lead role in Hollywood.

      • spidey says:

@ Lacia Can – actors have done far worse than Tom this summer and it hasn’t killed their careers.

        Sorry 🍺

      • lightpurple says:

@Lacia Can, yes, I’m sure with this nomination and the Emmy nomination just a few months ago that his career is pretty much dead because he made a fool of himself dating Taylor Swift.

      • spidey says:

        @lightpurple – have a drink with me! 🍸

      • lightpurple says:

*lifts a glass of eggnog mixed with Baileys and Kahlua at Spidey*

      • spidey says:

And lifts a glass of Malbec to you lightpurple.

I like my reds “chewy” as I call it.

      • Lacia Can says:

Jeez guys, calm down. I’m a fan of Tom and I hope he does well. I even said on another thread that he’s been getting more attention from the American press since dating TS and that maybe it wasn’t as dumb a move as it seemed at the time. But there’s no denying that his Hollywood leading roles haven’t been financially successful. TNM is from the UK, not Hollywood. ISTL tanked. So did Crimson Peak. Hollywood follows the money and Tom hasn’t brought it in as a lead. Yet his UK projects usually fare well. So,yes, it’ll be interesting to see if that gets him another lead role in a Hollywood movie. No need to get your backs up. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts on Tiddles.

      • spidey says:

        Hey, we are calm.

      • lightpurple says:

Perfectly calm here. But I have been posting here for three years and it is fairly standard for somebody to post that Tom’s career is in dire straits, even when he has just been nominated for an award. Crimson Peak is on GDT and I think Hollywood knows ISTL was the director’s problem too with positive reviews for Tom- Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke both had musician bios released at the same time that tanked as well; not what the public wanted at the time. When you look at what other more established actors, like Clooney, had done at this point in their careers, his career is doing fine. An actor more contemporary with him, like Fassbender, when you look at his recent track record, he has had quite a few films fare poorly as well. Even Steve Jobs, for which he was Oscar nominated, did not do well at the box office. And Frank? The Counsellor? Slow West (which I loved)? MacBeth? The Light Between the Oceans? But I don’t see questions about whether he’ll get hired again. It just gets brought up constantly when Tom is concerned. He has two films coming out next year. And he is rumored to be the lead in a play. And rumored to be the lead in a Warner Bros film with Wheatley.

ETA And Redmayne seems to have survived the colossal tanking and horrid reviews for him personally that was Jupiter Ascending

      • virginfangirl says:

So happy for you that you did not get the wrath of you know who for even suggesting such a thing.

      • MI6 says:

I am very willing to dole out the wrath to Swifty trolls. Bring it 😈

    • virginfangirl says:

      Yeah, ok

  20. Brea says:

So, so happy to see Riz Ahmed nominated, he’s consistently good and it’s his time to shine. I hope Stranger Things wins most of the awards sweeps all the awards.
I’m glad to see Insecure in the noms too!!

  21. Georgia says:

    Issa Rae FTW!!!

    • Allie B. says:

Yes! Issa deserves this win and I’m a die hard Julia Louis Dreyfuss fan. I’m also a big fan of Rachel Bloom, but it’s not even close this year. I hope Atlanta does well too.

Insecure has had relatively poor ratings. To those out there who think they won’t relate to this show, give it a chance. You’ll love it, I promise.

  22. Tiffany27 says:

Shout out to Issa Rae, Atlanta, and Riz Ahmed (who is so so beautiful!)

    • QQ says:

YES YES YES I’m so Elated for her!!!, also Atlanta! OMG!! AND STERLING!! AND THANDIE!! AND COURTNEY V!! Yusss!!! Also Im not mad at Claire Foy and ERW for Westworld,

  23. Rivkah says:

    Yes for The Crown!

  24. AG-UK says:

GOT peaked for me 2 years ago but Westworld and Thandie her face amazing… she was so good. Love Black-ish… Issa Rae/Atlanta as well.

  25. Molly says:

Am confused. how could Winona get the nod and not the amazing actress from GoT you picture here, crown and all? I don’t want to sound like the orange one, but it definitely seems political, the nom to Winona. I love her, am glad to see her making a comeback, but I do not find her performance to be even in the same league. But thrilled to see Clare Foy recognized. The Crown was superb.

    • amilu says:

Lena Headey (“amazing actress from GoT you picture here, crown and all”) was nominated.

“Supporting actress in a limited series or TV series
      Olivia Coleman
      Lena Headey
      Chrissy Metz
      Mandy Moore
      Thandie Newton”

  26. MellyMel says:

Yas!! This is the first year a lot of my favorite shows and ppl are nominated! Nothing but love for Sterling K., Issa Rae, Courtney B. Vance (who better win or I’ll riot), Sarah Paulson, Stranger Things, The Crown, & Rami! And I really want Tracee to win this year too!

    • Kori says:

I think it’s Vance in a walk. He was amazing and has the Emmy. I hope for repeats for Paulson and Sterling (who is really having a year) as well.

  27. A says:

I’ve been watching The Crown, and I remember watching the opening sequence and thinking to myself, “Oh, if John Lithgow’s in it, what’s his role?” It took me a good 3 episodes to realize he was Winston Churhill. He was absolutely exceptional, and completely unrecognizable, and if he doesn’t pick up the award, it’ll be an upset for sure.

Other noms I’m pleased about–Issa Rae for Insecure!! I haven’t watched the show yet, but I’m going to since I know a lot of people who have nothing but love for it, and it seems really good. Also Riz Ahmed’s nomination, Gael Garcia Bernal’s nomination for Mozart in the Jungle. And finally, FINALLY, all the due recognition and love for the Americans. I’ve been a fan since season one, and the constant snubs were so annoying, but I sure hope that this is their year. This season especially has been phenomenal and it is a show that I have never ever been displeased with omg.

  28. JK3 says:

How many supporting actor/actress bloodbaths do we have to witness before there is a category change?

  29. Ayra. says:

YES AT WESTWORLD, YES AT TRACEE, YES AT RAMI, YES AT ISSA.
I’m soo here for almost all of these nominations, I’m ready.
The more I look at the list, the more I can’t wait for the awards, I don’t watch many tv series, so I’m partially biased.

  30. StevieLeigh says:

Matt Smith got absolutely snubbed! He was one of the best parts of The Crown! Absolutely enraged, haha! I’m a huge Matt fan. You can all keep Fassbender, Cumberbatch, Hiddleston etc. I’m just shocked lol!

  31. Marie says:

    No Narcos?!?!

  32. Abby_J says:

I’m here for Olivia Coleman, The Crown, and Hiddles in a Tux, in that order. 🙂

    • lightpurple says:

The tux will probably be Gucci. I’m hoping for the jacket with the print on it from the photoshoot but with black pants. Mix things up a bit and have fun. But regular shoes. No Mary Janes.

      • Abby_J says:

That sounds like a great plan. Especially the part about the mary janes? Who thought it was a good idea for dudes to wear those? Yikes!

      • lightpurple says:

But I could see Gucci’s former model/red carpet guy Jared Leto wearing them, just because.

  33. Amanda D says:

So happy for the actress who plays Kate on This Is Us! As for the rest…pretty much the same names as previous years…

  34. Genter says:

Maybe my husband and I are alone in this thought, but no Peaky Blinders?! Peaky Blinders has some of the best writing, directing, acting and cinematography out there right now. He’s a photographer, and I’m an actor, so he can’t watch anything in which the cinematography sucks, and I can’t watch bad acting. We’re a picky bunch, and it’s crazy to me that PB rarely gets nominated for anything. Cillian Murphy kills it in PB, too.

    • lightpurple says:

I have noticed that Neflix original shows get nominations (although did they get any this time) but shows that Netflix imports from elsewhere, like Peaky Blinders and Happy Valley, don’t.

      • Abby_J says:

Well, Marvel Netflix doesn’t get them. No Daredevil, no Jessica Jones (in their years) and even more shockingly, no Luke Cage?

  35. Rose says:

Where is Outlander for Best Drama?

    • Bicontinental says:

A million times THIS! And where is the nom for Sam Heughan for that matter?!?!

    • Ickythump says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking, it’s such a brilliant show but I am so happy Caitriona was nominated even if poor Sam missed out 🙁

  36. Tina says:

So, so pleased for Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys on the Americans. They are both doing outstanding work. Not sure why the show itself wasn’t nominated, as it is phenomenal.

    • mayamae says:

The Americans never seems to get any attention – it’s all wasted on American Horror Story. And wasn’t it the Globes that gave an award to one note Lady Gaga? Lost a lot of respect for them that day.

  37. Abby_J says:

So I know it’s a new show and all, but why is there no love for Underground on WGN?

Is it too new? Is the station too small? Am I just the only person who thinks it is an AMAZING show?

    • mayamae says:

I thought I would love Underground, but couldn’t make it past two episodes. I thought it really glossed over the brutality of slavery. Rosalee wore nice clothing AND earrings! As did her fellow house slaves. They seemed more like debutantes who helped entertain the guests. It was completely unbelievable, especially since the master’s wife disliked her. Sure one woman murdered her newborn to prevent if from being a slave, but we didn’t see her subjected to anything before it happened. No context. I thought maybe the network wouldn’t allow the brutality to be shown, but that’s almost unbelievable when I think of what’s shown on TWD. Maybe it drastically improved, but I kept it on my DVR for months, and just wasn’t able to force myself to watch it.

  38. virginfangirl says:

Any chance Tom could win. Probably not, right?

  39. Lisa says:

Rami, yes! Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell both deserve some recognition for The Americans. Too bad the show wasn’t nominated.
