Another Tom Hiddleston promotional tour is upon us, and it just makes me happy. I hope he debuts a new girlfriend to coincide with the promotion of Kong: Skull Island, even though I doubt anything will ever top The Glorious Tiddlebanging of 2016. Maybe if Tom and Taylor Swift got back together, that could possibly top it. But otherwise… no, he probably won’t debut a new girlfriend in the next few months. Oooh, maybe Jane Arthy will make another appearance!! Bless her. Anyway, Hiddle Piddle has some new junket interviews, the most notable of which is this Access Hollywood one where he asked flat-out about his interviews sometimes coming across as “too honest.” Some assorted quotes:
On being honest so publicly: “It’s interesting, you know… I’ve always tried to be honest about who I am. I’ve nothing to hide. But there is a balance you have to strike, I think, as anyone in the public eye would agree with me, yeah… so, it’s something I’m still learning.”
On Tom Hanks: “He’s committed so much… ah, to film and entertained so many people for so long and in so many different ways. If you think about his career, from Forrest Gump to Philadelphia or Big or Saving Private Ryan or Bridge of Spies or Sully and Toy Story, I just think he’s such a great actor.”

Re; Brie Larson… I get the feeling that they’re just friendly colleagues. Even if she didn’t have a boyfriend (which she does), I get the feeling that Brie and Tom just wouldn’t be compatible overall. I tend to think he goes for high-maintenance ladies? Like, that’s his thing. He likes it super-complicated. Brie is too easy-going. As for the rest of it… he’s a good tipper and he doesn’t have anything to hide. WE’LL SEE ABOUT THAT. Here’s the video:

i love love love michaela coel. is she famous in the US? i read the essay, and loved it, and agreed with her very much. i also loved what adele did, i know she got some criticism for it, but i think it was coming from the right place. i think everyone should read michaela’s piece about it because she explains it so well, if anyone’s interested it’s on the guardian’s website.
in the UK atm we have both michaela coel and riz ahmed who are talking lots about diversity and their experiences within the industry and in life, and it’s really a discussion that needs to exist everywhere, but especially in the post-brexit britain we currently live in.
I’m in the UK, silly! I love Chewing Gum and did you see the C4 show that was a bit like District 9 last year? She was great in that. Riz writes brilliantly and sometimes I feel comradeship with him – we were both born in working class areas of West London and got scholarships to private school. You should look out a book called The Good Immigrant, short stories edited by Nikesh Shukla. Riz’s essay in that is wonderful.

He’s been promoting it like crazy-USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy-and it’s already near the 100 million BO internationally. It’s a great follow-up to JW and it’s great to see Keanu own that role. Excuse the gushing, but Keanu’s the only guy I’ll go to EVERY movie for. And if you compare him to his 80’s contemporaries-Johnny, Tom, Brad-well, he’s the only one who’s not an embarrassment.
Oh the reason is pretty easy: clicks, baby, clicks…… Have you ever checked out his news? Every time when I check his news there are 10 comments at first. And when I check again there are over 150 comments which are quite amusing. People mock him and I love Sixer for that. But in the end we all know that Hiddiot might be thirsty from time to time but he is not dangerous. And look, have you ever checked his CV when it comes to his relationships and his quotes about his private life? I always have to chuckle. Btw, I watched Keanu Reeves on the GNS (together with Whoopie) and I laughed so much. He will always be Ted for me.

He didn’t wait tables to make a living, but he’s said before that he waited tables at a summer(s) festival his mother organized. I believe it was during his university years or maybe earlier. I don’t think he would have had time at RADA, but if he did work a random shift or two it would have been for character study, observing mannerisms, etc. not for $. Even though his parents would not pay for RADA, he said he made enough $ to cover it with the acting jobs and commercials he did when he was at Cambridge.
I dont think he goes for complicated girls. Neither Elizabeth Olsen or that professor seem complicated at all. I think he goes for nurturing women. I think he is extremely hyper sensensitive and emotionally needy as that GQ writer discovered. I also think this is one of the reasons he was drawn to Taylor. Clique heads ability to recruit new clique members relies on seeming self assured but also nurturing. Of course once they have you it becomes clear that it was always about them.
If you look st his gf’s before he became well known, they are very smart, confident women. Since then it looks to me like any involvements have been career motivated, and I don’t think he’s been going for the same type.
I’m no Hiddleston expert but hasnt his only known Hollywood involvements been Elizabeth and Taylor? The Elizabeth one was pretty low key too. I dont think there was ever a confirmation or even a red carpet. Just camera phone shots from awkward angles. I definitely agree one of his attractions to Taylor was the increased profile though. And boy did he milk it.

He lived in a studio flat in zone 1 when he was a “struggling actor” and had bought his own apartment by the time he was cast in Thor. Too honest my ass.
He did work tables at a opera festival went he was still at school. I suppose he could just have spent his hols lazing about. He said he couldn’t believe how rude people were so always tries to be polite to people serving him.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I know he mentioned before about waitering at his mother’s festivals and having a bad experience with a rude customer. Maybe it was just one time or the one day he always refers to as his main negative experience and why he always says (when asked) that waiting is one of the most thankless professions.

It refers to Transport for London’s travel card zones. And yes, zone 1 is central London – the City and the West End, basically (mostly everything on the Circle Line).
I suppose the NY equivalent to squeezeo’s Zone 1 remark would be that his starter flat was in Manhattan – ie ridiculously expensive.

I’m not going to fault him for working even if he didn’t need the money. The people I know who had to work a minimum-wage, not-so-glamorous job in their teens and early twenties tend to be slightly more clued in to reality (and nicer to wait staff and store employees).
I’m going to also add a story: At the start of my freshman year of college, a group of girls all went to a nearby mall. We were all comfortably middle class, and all of us – with the exception of one girl – had worked service jobs in high school. She treated the store employees HORRIBLY and explained it as ‘well, that’s their job.’
Needless to say, all of us avoided going shopping with her after that. You don’t treat people like that! Treating people horribly is never part of a job description!
Totally agree LA Elle, whatever some’s job is they are still people. And we would miss the street cleaners, etc. far sooner than we would miss the high fliers of this world.
The only time I might be slightly less than polite to waiting/serving staff would be if they were rude, unhelpful or patronising to me first.
“struggling actor” were not his words. It was used as a clear figure of speech by the interviewer. Besides, that doesn’t take away from his original point: that waiting tables can be a difficult job, because some people are rude.

I enjoyed watching these interviews. Hiddles did not come across as a leg humping piddle puddle puppy. More like a 1 year old good doggie who has learned not to hump or piddle in public.

Funny! Is this based on the “human golden retriever” theory to explain the man?
In past interviews, the person interviewing him will speak of some long days of shooting or a scene that would be cause to complain, but Tom will then mention a scene that was fun, or how he had the opportunity to learn some new skill, so he seems to be the type that looks at the glass half full. We all need to be around those type of people sometimes.
Agreed! I’m increasingly over cynicism as somehow ‘cool’ – it is exhausting being around negative people.
I think that’s why I have a soft spot for Hiddleston, extra though he may be.
Because Hiddleston talks [and keeps talking] there will always be divided opinions about him. The best description of him is “extra” which I had to look up. I am more than a little extra myself and paired in life with a wonderful man who has nothing but “chill” Sadly, he has many health issues and is notorious for not letting nurses know when he’s in pain. This is all to say that I might see a kindred spirit in young Tom.
I also really enjoy his work. I urge CBers to check out ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE.

So I made a comment a couple of weeks ago about how Hiddleston is smart to always treat reporters with respect. Given what’s going on in American politics at present, I’ve been thinking about how way too many actors view being rude or short with the press (or blaming them when convenient) is on the same spectrum of Trump’s “the media is the enemy” spiel.
Say what you will about other parts of Tom’s PR strategy, but I think more actors should take a page from his book of treating reporters like people who are simply trying to do their job.
It certainly comes in handy when promoting a movie. I think it’s smart, too. I have alluded to this before, but whatever reputation TH has in gossip world, he is well like by what used to be called the “trade papers”. VARIETY, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, ETC.
I remember your comments about that – and I agree with you.
At the end of the day, Hollywood is like any other industry: people want to work with people who do their jobs and are generally pleasant to be around. They’ll put up with idiots but only so long as those idiots make money.
To some extent, I think his win at the Golden Globes was influenced by this very attitude. I’m guessing that a lot of the HFPA voters are reporters who see firsthand how various celebs treat the working press, the ones that go to junket after junket and don’t get a) much respect or b) much quality time with their interview subjects. If a celeb remembers them from a previous interview, or gives them something unique in their 8-10 minutes of allotted time, it makes their job that much easier.

Taylor never ever struggled. Not once. Was born to wealthy parents in the finance industry. Not saying you shouldn’t like her but the “struggle” is a farce.
Hi Jerkface, agreed. Yes, Taylor did have wealthy parents but even being wealthy and having connections does not guarantee success and longevity. Even decent singers struggle to reach the A list status. I rarely hear Taylor treat the press badly nor show open disdain. I’m sure it happens when she’s having a bad day but she and Tom seem to see the positive side (partly cos maybe both are really ambitious or for some, hungry). Sometimes they make me cringe of course but overall I find them pleasant and harmless.

This, THIS is why I love Tom. This is why I find it a shame that “try-hard” is used as a negative adjective. Because look at the difference in the level of giving a f*ck. Maybe they were instructed to show up in vastly different looks; maybe Tom was told to dress impeccably in a blindingly gorgeous bespoke 3-piece suit with a lining to die for, while Jared was asked to go for more of the “just-rolled-out-of-bed-reeking-of-Cool-Ranch-Doritos-and-weed” aesthetic. But I find that unlikely.
The last few months have given me a grudging admiration for Hiddles. Despite heaping piles of Internet scorn, our Tommy still puts on his best maroon sweater and answers half-assed question from C-list entertainment reporters with meta-detailed word salads. A lesser man would have fled to a remote island by now.
@ Mildred – glad I’m not the only one who thinks like that. Whether it be actors or sportspeople, they get asked the same (often really silly) questions over and over again, and people wonder why they give the same answers over and over again.

Yes to this. I know all actors big and small go through this repetitive nonsense circus when comes time to promote their movies. And most of the time we only see one or two of the many, many junket videos actually done when you count all the smaller media, internet and international journalist too. It’s crazy. I remember watching a full days run of press junket vids Jamie Bell was doing for Man on a Ledge. He was funny and engaging for most, but on a few you could see he was ready to jump out of his skin at a couple points when they were letting the cameras roll.
