Angelina Jolie met with the Archbishop of Canterbury in London yesterday

amfAR New York 2017 Gala

As we know, Angelina Jolie and the kids were in London and Geneva this week. Angelina had a bunch of stuff to do, from meeting with William Hague at the Foreign Office, to taking a private tour of Buckingham Palace with her son Maddox, to giving a lecture at the London School of Economics, to giving an incredible speech in Geneva. Here’s something I didn’t know though: while she was in the UK on Thursday, she stopped by Lambeth Palace and met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. Wow.

What does one wear to meet with the Archbishop of Canterbury? Can you wear slacks? Should your knees be covered? I ask because there are so many style rules for women meeting the Pope. I think the Archbishop is more loosey-goosey about dress codes though. Angelina basically just wore a sack skirt and a comfortable-looking sweater. She was covered up, but she looked pretty casual. Jolie met with the Archbishop to talk about her work with refugees and more:

Angelina Jolie is teaming up with the head of the Church of England. The actress and humanitarian met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, at Lambeth Palace in London on Thursday, where the two discussed issues surrounding sexual violence, the refugee crisis and South Sudan.

Jolie met with the archbishop in her capacity as a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She was appointed to the post in 2012.

The actress and archbishop have worked together before, and met in 2015 at the opening of the Center for Peace and Security at the London School of Economics, where she spoke to religious leaders from around the world about ending sexual violence as a weapon of war.

[From People]

In the past three years, Angelina has met the Queen (Dame Jolie!), the Duchess of Cornwall, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Pope Francis, assorted world leaders and more. Oh, and she met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge too, I forgot about that. The Archbishop tweeted about their meeting too:

Let’s see, what else? Apparently, Angelina and Brad aren’t selling the Chateau Miraval in France. I have no idea if the chateau is only in Brad’s name or if it’s in both of their names or what, but their friend and co-winemaker Marc Perrin says that Angelina and Brad still have plans to produce wine out of Miraval for years to come.

    As one does.

  2. Greata says:

His face as he looks at her says it all.

  3. Maya says:

What a woman – I get exhausted by just reading about the stuff she is doing.

A mother, actress, director, producer, writer, UN special convoy, guest lecturer, overseas several charities etc.

One of the main reason I admire Angelina is her strength/resiliency. She gets attacks for numerous things and have been for decades and yet she never lets that put her down.

She ignores the haters and continues to focus on what she feels are important.

I admit now that I was wrong in expecting Brad to release a statement to support Angelina and his children.

Angelina has proven several times that she can take care of herself and her children.

    • Sushi says:

Same here, does not matter how she got criticised right , left and center, she is marching to the beat of her own drum.

  4. Montenegro says:

It must be very cold in that room……
(Is she just wearing a very sheer bra?)

    • Zeddy says:

Because it’s winter in the UK? Well that doesn’t make sense, I would imagine they would have heaters for such a thing.

    • doofus says:

can we please stop with the nipple shaming? everyone has them, and everyone is different.

sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities, but mine do the same thing practically at NOTHING. temp change, friction of the bra/clothing, etc. some people’s are just more sensitive.

      • Fa says:

This is because of the surgery but people don’t understand the effect.

      • Minxx says:

Mine are the same but I just wear a thicker bra to cover it or a scarf around the front. Or maybe just a jacket if it’s a formal meeting, like this one. It’s really not
        impossible to cover it.

      • doofus says:

I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m saying it SHOULDN’T MATTER. I feel like I’m dealing with a bunch of men who get offended when a woman breastfeeds in a public place.

why should she have to wear a “thicker bra” or a jacket, or scarf, or nipple pads? if YOU feel uncomfortable looking like that, go ahead and cover up. to each his own. (to add, I wear a “thicker bra” EVERY DAMN DAY as I have large, heavy breasts and I need the support and I STILL get that.)

she’s not parading around in a skimpy croptop with her nips on display, she’s covered up and shouldn’t have to hide something that is completely natural and NOT sex related. if SHE doesn’t care, no one else should. please, clutch your pearls about something else.

    • Jaye says:

Please read up on breast reconstruction.
She was never one to be showing off her nipples before, but after surgery it is out of her control.

      • Minxx says:

Is wearing a jacket also out of her control? or even a padded bra?

      • Montenegro says:

So sorry to get you so upset doofus! But it DOES matter when she is engaging in meetings such as this. Her new nips out of control from surgery? Well, there’s jackets, scarves, heavier sweaters, well, you get the point ( no pun intended)
And me? Well, I have no nipples, robbed from me during a disfiguring double mastectomy with my terminal breast cancer.
I just believe when you are presenting yourself to the world, there’s better ways to do it than being on high beam. There should be a sense of decorum!
I’ll go back to polishing my pearls now…..

    • justsaying says:

      The DM’s headline says everything.

      • Fa says:

DM changed their headline after their readers comments about it, they have no brain and don’t understand woman in her situation.

    • Lilly says:

From what I’ve read, they saved her own nipples (‘nipple delay’, which is meant to be quite painful) before the mastectomy, but the nerves that cause them to be erect are gone and they no longer respond to cold or stimulation.

It’s likely that the surgery and the implants have caused her to have them permanently on ‘high beam’ and there’s very little she can do about it.

      • Who ARE These People? says:

Maybe she will be able to have inserts sewn in her bras or something. Either that or start a new trend.

    • sendepause says:

People, where — or WHEN — are you all from that two nipples make you loose your shit??? I mean, not even the actual nipples — just shadows on the sweater. Angelina better hurries up and covers her ankles, too! Because scandalous!!!

      • Vox says:

I don’t get how this is indecent. It’s out of her control. Maybe she’s just not ashamed at a natural byproduct of her surgery. Nipples aren’t scandalous.

  5. Tiffany says:

Man, her Rolodex is baller. I mean, really.

  6. Pri says:

Am surprised she doesn’t have a pied a terre in London as she works a lot there. She’ll also be commuting from Cali for her LSE lectures.

  7. Bridget says:

I’ll be interested to see what happens with Miraval. Their wine has been successful but that estate must be massively expensive. Not to mention the kindness of capital they sunk in to buy it in he first place.

  8. Molly says:

@montenegro she had a mastectomy. She can’t help if her nipples are more erect. Unlike others who try to show theirs on purpose.

    • Tanguerita says:

well, she could have worn a bra. And no need to drag Aniston into it.

      • Jaye says:

How do you know she it not wearing a bra? Enlighten us please.

      • doofus says:

do you really think she didn’t wear a bra to meet with a clergyman?

to add, even with a bra, mine do this ALL THE TIME.

However, I do agree that it’s not necessary to shame ANYONE for this. Jolie, Aniston or ANY woman.

      • Fa says:

She is wearing a bra it just you can’t control with bra as well.

      • Ennie says:

When did she mention Aniston? Or is Aniston famous for showing her nips?

    • Greata says:

      @ Molly..THIS!

    • tracking says:

Or maybe “they” also have nipples that tend to stand at attention regardless, and also do not deserve shaming for this?

      • Magdalene says:

The problem is they can’t shame her, she pays dust to her critics, ask Chelsea Handler. I’m sure she would love a feud with Jolie instead Jolie has treated her like she is non existent and Handler looks like a bitter bitch.

      • tracking says:

Uh, no evidence at all she wants a feud with Jolie. In fact, she very nicely praised her last directorial effort. Really don’t think they care about each other. And, what, pray tell does my comment have to do with yours?

    • rosalee says:

Maybe a suitable bra would have been in order..since she was meeting with the head of the church

      • Who ARE These People? says:

She had a double mastectomy due to her being at very high risk of breast cancer, and even with a bra, the replacements seem to be this way. Maybe her bras can be altered to subdue the effect. In any case, she’s not being disrespectful.

      • Minxx says:

Absolutely. I remember Aniston being constantly trashed for showing her nips. I have a similar problem but trust me, there is a range of solutions if you don’t want to draw attention to your nips.

      • Clare says:

The Archbishop is not the head of the church. The Queen is.

I’m genuinely surprised that so many women have an issue with another woman’s nipples – she is respectfully dressed and ‘alert’ nipples are a biological fact – what’s the problem? It’s not like she’s sat there in a bikini top and hot pants? Shrug.

    • Ophelia says:

Some people can’t control their nipples even without mastectomy. There’s only so many padded layers I can wear at the same time until I suffocate myself but you can still see my nipples. We used to joke that everyone is the pea princess with me around.

I find it odd that you would nipple shame others while calling for no nipple shaming. I say no nipple-shaming __at all__, not Angelina, not Jennifer, not Chelsea, or not the millions of other women (and men) on the streets if they happen to do so.

It happened to me at another post too. Telling me not to diminish their idol’s achievements while in the same breath easily using the word nobody to describe someone.

I wish you would not only praise Angelina Jolie but also follow her example. Why do you always have to degrade other women to elevate her? I feel that you do her a great disservice.

Someone once said this about something/someone else, but applicable to the Brangelinos as well: ” I have no problem with that person, it’s that person’s fanclub that I have a problem with.”

  9. Talie says:

It makes sense for them to stay in business…that rose is incredibly popular.

    • doofus says:

I’m not even a wine fan (esp sweet-ish wine, I prefer red) but I really like theirs. so nice in the summer!

    • tracking says:

Also if they licensed their names, who knows for how long, and not necessarily tied to ownership of the estate.

  10. Rocio says:

She looks so much better with lighter colours. Black is elegant but she shouldn’t wear it that much. It doesn’t suit her.

    • tracking says:

I agree she looks nice in lighter colors, or color more generally, but do think this outfit is too casual for this particular meeting. I’m a little surprised too, because she’s been dressing beautifully lately. Wonder if she has a new stylist.

      • doofus says:

yeah, that blue suit was FAB. I think she looks great in jewel tones, darker reds/blues/greens.

      • Embee says:

I wonder if she planned to meet the archbishop or if it was sprung on her last-minute and she didn’t have anything to wear? Her outfit screams to me of “working mom who got called to an engagement she didn’t expect.” Because it is too casual, and if she had planned the outfit to be one for a public/photographed encounter I have no doubt she would have worn nipple pads, but as they are an unnecessary nuisance otherwise she wasn’t carrying them? That was my hot take.

  11. Magdalene says:

Some people just can’t help themselves. I know this site is called celebitchy but there are times that commonsense is called for. There are things to criticize her for but some people want to criticize her for breathing, if it was possible to blame her for the refugee crisis, some people will.

  12. minx says:

She looks great and is obviously enjoying her useful, productive life.

  13. Sixer says:

He’s quite a bonkers AoC really. Very posh mum who, I think, worked for Winston Churchill. Both parents were raging alcoholics and split up, then the father got engaged to Vanessa Redgrave. He was an oil executive for years before becoming a cleric. He got rejected by the CofE at first. And he currently sits on the parliamentary banking commission (he’s in the House of Lords as AoC). Then for some reason a paternity test was done and his father wasn’t the one engaged to Vanessa Redgrave but someone else.

He’s not really the type to be fussed about what someone wears when they meet him!

    • Ankhel says:

      Oh my. Juicy!

Quite the old-fashioned type of bishop, really. There was a time when bishops were often warlike and greedy lords who weren’t opposed to the occasional hostile takeover, so to speak. He’s an embarrassing reminder for the rest of the mildly devout, no doubt!

    • Fa says:

He posted these pictures on his twitter no one ask him and he is ok with it and I don’t know why people cares what she’s wearing or not.

  14. Molly says:

Media & tabloid press do anything they can to undermine good work she does because they have no control or effect on her. Any chance to cut her down, they go for it. They cannot stand strong headed women who prosper in life.

  15. Sera says:

So sick of the ignorant comments. She had a double mastectomy people. Stop being so judgmental and read and learn about what h happens with t h reconstructive surgery.

    • Butterscotch says:

They do the same thing with Aniston
Have a nervous breakdown when she wears a shirt that shows off her nipples.
      Shame her for it.
It’s a nipple for crying out loud.
      Who cares?

  16. Boodiba says:

Ha! The nips were the first thing I saw & so I did a page search for “nipples”. All done here. PS: jackets work.

  17. MaryJo says:

As a football manager once said: dogs bark, but the caravan goes on.

  18. Joannie says:

People are defensive about this? She could have worn a jacket and there are bras that cover up nipples no matter how hard they are. Honestly I cant believe she thinks this is ok and no one would notice. I also have to add this woman’s self promotion is amazing!

  19. bap says:

While the haters are playing Checkers, Angelina is playing Chess. Angelina is always 10 steps ahead the haters.

  20. bap says:

After their 2015 meeting, Archbishop Welby called the humanitarian efforts by the actress “extraordinary”.
“The role of the U.N. Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Refugees, Angelina Jolie, is one that has been extraordinary,” Welby said of Jolie after their 2015 meeting. “What she said just now sums up so beautifully the issues we are facing, and puts it so precisely in terms of the challenge that there is. It’s wonderful that she has committed her time, her energy, and has taken great personal risks in order to be able to speak authentically as to what she’s done.”

  21. michelle says:

It’s a nipple for god sake. People seriously need to grow the hell up. The woman had her breasts removed, went through all that for her health & still gets crap because operation left her with hard nipples. If people are offended by the sight of nipples covered or not? We as a society are truly f****d. She’s already wearing a bra, but as not to offend anyone, she has to wear a padded bra, nipple covers & a jacket over the top to please others?

    • Minxx says:

In a meeting like this, yes. In casual situations, absolutely not. Would she wear a sweater to meet with the pope, just because she’s “her own Brand”? Sheesh.

      • sendepause says:

She isn’t meeting with a pope, for starters.

Also a sweater is a perfectly *respectable* piece of clothing. I’m sure the archbishop owns a few sweaters himself — he probably wasn’t too shocked by a sight of the one worn by Angelina Jolie.

  22. Mari says:

    But …her bra??

  23. bap says:

All these other so called celebrities doing all kinds of outrageous things no out cries about them. Angelina they will find the least little thing and nit pick it. Angelina is a very tough woman and she keeps Soaring to new heights which her haters can not deal with.

    • sendepause says:

Seriously, people are weirdly obsessed with derailing conversation about Angelina Jolie. Yesterday the topic was about her amazing and important speech but haters were all about botox/fillers, today it is still about her humanitarian efforts but perlclutchers are all about the ~*~scandalous~*~ shadows from her nipples OMG THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN ONEELEVEN. It is pretty obvious what they are doing and it is neither unique not new to reduce the power of a woman to her looks. Sexism is strong with all of them.

  24. Mocha says:

A t-shirt bra would have been appropriate here. She did this at a UN event too. There she was wearing a really thin slip and should have known to wear a t-shirt bra (your best friend in cold weather). Sorry, but it’s just common sense and it has nothing to do with nipple shaming or not respecting women’s rights – or breastfeeding in public (a different thing), for that matter.

    • sendepause says:

Why is it a “different thing”? Considering a bra is a relatively new invention and all???

    • Lalu says:

I don’t think a difference of opinion is shaming.
I don’t even wear a bra a lot of the time but there are certain places you would never catch me without one. Not because I think boobs are shameful but because I don’t want to be at work or in church and feel like my nips are distracting someone. Same with not letting my bra straps show in some places. I was just taught it was disrespectful I guess. I don’t think it’s “dirty” or “sex”, just not really appropriate.
I do understand why people find this odd. A lot of things are normal and natural and nothing to be ashamed of but we try not to display it. If she was just out and about, I wouldn’t think anything of it… I think it’s more like the context.
She’s a little older than me and well aware of the way people react to things… It honestly surprises me that she didn’t wear something different.

  25. Anare says:

Having your nips showing like that is kind of tacky for a formal business meeting esp with one of the top religious leaders in the world. My nips show too which is why I wear a contour bra that hides that. So yes I am nipple shaming and not sorry. 😒

  26. Wyatt says:

Maybe next time she will take some of you guys advice and cover up with a jacket or different bra, then what😜

  27. bap says:

Angelina is highly Intelligent and Polished Diplomat and she get things done on her Agenda. Great Lady and Mother.
