Racist troll Tomi Lahren suspended for expressing one pro-choice thought

Tomi Lahren during an appearance on ABC's 'The View.'

A few months back, people were tweeting at me and trying to get me to give Trevor Noah another shot on The Daily Show. Their argument was that Noah had “found his voice” during his interview with Tomi Lahren. I did watch the interview and I was disgusted. Not by Trevor Noah, exactly. I thought he did okay with the interview. But I just don’t believe people like Tomi Lahren deserve a platform in the mainstream media. It’s a lot like the NY Magazine profile of Kellyanne Conway – I reject any attempt to humanize these bigots, Nazis, a–holes and monsters. They have their ultra-right-wing media and echo chamber. Let them say their stupid sh-t over there.

Tomi Lahren is one of the New (Aryan) Faces of the younger conservatives. She’s a hateful bigot, a racist, an idiot and a terrible person. She’s like a fresh-faced Ann Coulter, basically, and she’s trying to make a name for herself and become a “celebrity politico” in her own right. Her day job is/was for The Blaze, a Glenn Beck-owned outfit. Well, Lahren just got suspended from The Blaze. You know why? Because she dared to spout some pro-choice views. *clutches pearls*

Amid a conservative backlash over Tomi Lahren’s explanation on why she is “pro-choice,” the conservative commentator’s show has reportedly been pulled off air for the week, the Blaze confirmed.

Lahren, the 24-year-old host of the show “Tomi” on the conservative website, admitted on “The View” Friday that she supports abortion rights, saying that as someone who supports limited government, it would be hypocritical of her to believe the government should decide what women should do with their bodies.

Conservative writers, social media users and talk show hosts — including Blaze founder Glenn Beck — soon fired back, criticizing Lahren’s comments and justification. And on Monday, Leon Wolf, managing editor of the Blaze, told CNN that “Tomi’s show will not be in production this week.”

Monday evening, Lahren tweeted that she had some “me” time that night, apparently a reference to time off from her nightly show. “Anything good on TV?”

[From The Washington Post]

As the Daily Beast points out, Lahren has actually flip-flopped on abortion. Just a few months ago, she was using the rhetoric of anti-choicers and bitching about Lena Dunham’s pro-choice stance. And now she’s all “limited government means women should have autonomy over their own bodies.” Hm, what to believe? Actually, it doesn’t matter. Even if she has become a convert to the pro-choice movement, I’m still not a fan. That being said, she should not be suspended from her job just because she expressed one nuanced thought about abortion.

i dont really get her or like her but she has a point

if you are truly for limited gov, limit it everywhere, not just where it conveniences you like with guns

    • lem says:

but the GOP/right-wingers aren’t really for limited government.

      • Kasia says:

Seems like they do want a small government but one made of oligarchs who get to dictate the lives of the bottom 99% of people in the states as well as the lives of those of us outside of the U.S.

      • Radley says:

Exactly. They’re for limited social services, environmental services and science research. They’re pro deregulation, big bloated Dept of Defense and government dictating abortion rights and end of life decisions and pork barrel politics. They’ve successfully convinced low information voters that somehow this formula is gonna work out just fine for them despite the fact that it NEVER has.

As for Tomi, maybe this is a publicity stunt. Glenn Beck is such a con artist. He’s publicly moderated his own views but continues to make a buck off far right crazies like Tomi. He’s playing both sides against the middle. Conservatives are easy pickings apparently.

      • noway says:

@Radley all good points, and I had lost touch with the Glen Beck’s of the world, but I did see a news story and he was sounding sane for a change and definitely anti-Trump. Still if he is making money off the right wing nuts, I guess he just decided being a hypocrite was okay for a buck. I should have known he didn’t really change.

Just one question about all these right wing nut girls. Why do they all look like blonde barbies? Seriously, most of the news anchor women on Fox are blonds, and kind of all look the same. You know if they hired a few brunettes, they might help with their Aryan image issue. Just odd to be so blatant.

      • K2 says:

They’re for limiting having to forgo a cent of their own money to pay for anything at all for anyone else, even means meals for hungry children… but all for limitless control over everyone else’s behaviour, as far as I can see

      • Otaku Fairy says:

They’re very much not for limited government when it comes to anything that has to do with protecting people’s right to do things that ‘go against Judeo-Christian values’, basically.

    • INeedANap says:

I am betting she changed her mind because she suddenly needed an abortion or had a pregnancy scare.

Here’s hoping the conservative backlash will make her rethink her entire ideology.

      • Matomeda says:

My guess is that that’s her real thought- that she is actually pro choice, but is expected to toe a line for the very Christian-values beck. And maybe she thought she was big enough to express her own thoughts now? Maybe testing the waters? Idk why she did but I’ll bet she has opinions that aren’t 100% in line with her party, like most of us, but as “the face” of an org she’s expected to only spout that

  2. Megan says:

She should not be suspended for expressing an opinion about abortion, she should be canceled for being a racist troll who spouts talking points straight from the White House communications office.

    • Olenna says:

      Hear, hear!

    • Kitten says:

She’s following the path of Megyn Kelly and KA Conway: pandering to whomever and whatever will get her notoriety and advance her career.

Call me cynical but this incident has more than a whiff of manufactured controversy to it.

Then again, I can’t stand her so maybe my bias is showing.

      • Radley says:

I agree with you. There’s a formula at this point for being a right wing female pundit. Look at how she’s getting blonder more orange. LOL There’s so many blonde talking heads on Fox. Aryan dogwhistle. She knows exactly what she’s doing.

      • FLORC says:

        Kitten nailed it.

      • Shark Bait says:

I heard Beck has been wanting to get rid of her for a while now. Maybe she saw an opportunity to get away from the Blaze and get more deals. Hmmm.

      • I Choose Me says:

My take exactly. Goddamn but I can’t stand this chick.

      • Emily says:

You forgot the final step kitten: later claim that women should support you no matter what because “feminism”.

    • Ash says:

Hear, hear! Suspension for being pro-choice, but not for being a racist? Uh huh.

  3. slowsnow says:

I didn’t know this troll and just watched a bit of the Trevor Noah itv. Wow. Just. Wow. What a horrible human being. Sometimes you don’t want certain people on your side.
But this is a simple question of rights:
    – freedom of speech does not give you the right to defend hatred
    – she does have the right to be pro-choice and keep her job
    End of.

    • Esmom says:

Does she have the right to be pro-choice and keep her job? Even if her job is to stick to the right wing agenda and talking points and she departs from that?

      • slowsnow says:

Good question. It all depends on the job profile but shouldn’t she be able to voice her own views – as long as they don’t promote hate if she is a “politico celebrity”?

What am I saying, I obviously don’t know The Blaze and am completely puzzled by people like her or the platform she speaks from.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

If her job is to repeat whatever her employer tells her, then no. If I run around the office and put papers in the shredder instead of filing them, I’ll be out of a job soon enough. I highly doubt it was actually her job to have an opinion.

I’m not going to defend her. She thought her looks and viewers would allow her to do her own thing when really, she was just the hot blonde puppet of some gross dudes who needed a fresh face. Hope that’s a life lesson learned. Karma will get you eventually.

      • sunnydaze says:

I say no. My field is the harm reduction model for substance use – If I were to say “everyone needs abstinence based treatment, period.” or “lock up the junkies” I wouldn’t have a job. My occupation rests on my buy-in to this model while I’m at work. Outside of work is a different story (although for the record I strongly identify with this model) and there are a few people I work with who definitely have different personal beliefs from our agency. So…I absolutely think if the expectation from her employer is she must have x, y, z opinion that’s their right to do. I’d have a much different take on it if she were heard expressing this opinion at a party or something “non-work” related, and was suspended.

The problem with “personality occupations” is that you’re kind of always working. If you – as a brand – are paid to promote certain ideologies, I guess that’s the risk you take for fame and fortune, and probably something most people don’t consider. You’re kind of selling your soul, and your silence to a degree.

    • Megan says:

@slowsnow Freedom of speech does give you the right to defend hatred.

As for keeping her job, she works for a right wing propaganda outlet. She is expected to further the mission of the organization by staying on message. She absolutely can be fired for expressing her opinion.

      • slowsnow says:

You see, that’s where, for me, up is down and down is up. I understand the keeping the profile of the propaganda outled and being fired if you don’t. Ok.
What I don’t understand is freedom of speech being equated with promoting hatred. Its like saying you are a free person therefore you can murder. You can, but then you go to prison. In my country, the limits of the freedom of speech are where you freedom undermines, in its ideas, the freedom of others. So no promotion of racism etc.

      • Megan says:

@slowsnow The US has very few restrictions on speech. You are completely free to promote racism. Outlets like The Blaze take full advantage of that right.

      • slowsnow says:

I see @Megan, thanks for taking the time to answer. That leaves me… speechless.

  4. Emily says:

Oh no, she should definitely be suspended from her job. Tomi’s learning a valuable lesson. The Blaze didn’t like her because she was a good journalist or because she was smart. They liked her because she was young, blonde, reasonably good looking, and (most importantly) willing to be a racist, misogynistic troll, as the above points out. Once she stepped out of line with that, they have no more use for her. Lie down with dogs, get fleas. This is why us snowflakes marched for women, Tomi!

    • Esmom says:

      Sounds about right.

    • Kitten says:

      Everything you said. Perfect comment.

    • jerkface says:

      Yes yes yes

    • Shark Bait says:

What exactly did Tammy Lasagna think was going to happen? She is surrounded by Glenn Beck and Matt Walsh. Both of whom compare abortion to the holocaust. No room for pro choice at the Blaze, Tiffany Locomotion!

      • Emily says:

Now she’ll have plenty of time to protest-march…since it’s something only unemployed losers have time for (according to her).

    • Otaku Fairy says:

That’s exactly it. The alt-right and MRAs love to point to examples of willing-to-be-racist-and-misogynistic subservient women like her, Andrea Hardie, and others like them as proof that they’re not really misogynists, that they just hate ‘The Bad Ones’ on the left and that any claims that they’re misogynistic is them being ‘censored’, but the truth is that they’re only tolerant and accepting of compliant women who are willing to tell them it’s okay to keep on viewing and treating certain groups of people the same way they’ve always been treated.

  5. Erinn says:

I’m partially surprised that she had so coherent of a thought. She’s a big party girl who struck gold by being pretty and non-threatening to the right/far right.

As much as I don’t like her – I think it’s incredibly ridiculous, and actually incredibly insincere of them to suspend her for this. These are the people who are constantly saying “wahhh if you express a non PC view, or don’t agree with the popular people you’re going to get backlash” – then Tomi expresses a view that is technically in line with her small government talking points – and within her right to express and BAM! Suspended.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Yep. The far right has always loved to hypocritically mock, whine, or have tantrums and hissy fits about how liberals’ ‘political correctness’ means we’re anti-free speech, violating their first amendment rights, and the ‘real’ intolerants, while cherry-picking which subjects they’ll practice censorship and militant political correctness around (the American flag, Christianity, the national anthem, males being portrayed in ways that aren’t traditionally masculine on TV, same-sex relationships being portrayed on TV, profanity, paganism, female immodesty, anyone not being nice to anyone who’s said or done something racist or sexist, etc.). But it seems like we’re seeing it more and more since the elections. Between the two examples of how they turned on Tomi Lahren and M. Y., and the constant, nation-wide attempts to silence and chastise anyone who is even slightly critical or impolite about a member of the Trump family, a member of the administration, or a Trump supporter, it’s easy to see that conservatives and their apologists aren’t against ‘political correctness’ as long as it’s not the liberal kind.

  6. Marty says:

Why does she look like an orangesicle with a blonde wig on? Is that a new look for racists now?

  7. Sixer says:

It’s intersectionality as experienced by the alt-right! Two bete noires – the state having any responsibility for healthcare and female reproductive rights – coming into conflict.

With any luck, the cognitive dissonance will lead to spontaneous combustion.

    • Shambles says:

I’m glad to see it finally happening. The same people who freak out about anything related to government healthcare but are perfectly fine with the government dictating a woman’s bodily choices– I’ve always been amazed by the cognitive dissonance. Yes, I’m looking forward to the combustion.

  8. Kiki says:

NO WORDS. JUST NO WORDS. I am just confused of the fact that this alt-right piece of trash has converted into pro-choice component. JUST NO WORDS.

I have wasted a lot of time, saying my piece about these bigots and a—holes on issues that will badly affect America. All I can say that these people are just here like Trump because they want the grandiose of love. Tomi Lahren, Milo Yann (what’s his face), Kellyanne Conways and the rest of the bigots (that include that Neo Nazi s—-head that got punched in face) are there because they want *attention*. If you don’t give it to them they will be feel bad….. and it is just pathetic. Not disgusting, just pathetic.

LIKE I SAID, NO WORDS JUST NO WORDS.

  9. Bunny says:

What kind of a name is Tomi Lahren anyway?

    • the_blonde_one says:

      What kind of name? Anagram!
      Tomi Lahren
      Armhole Nit
      Terminal Ho

    • Akku says:

As someone with a non Anglo, non easy to say name I hate these kind of comments, even when they’re directed at a complete pos. It’s low hanging fruit, especially when there are so many things you can rag on for this woman.

      • raptor says:

Agreed. And it’s not like she named herself?

Hate on her for all the valid reasons there are to hate on her: racism, misogyny, incoherence, famewhoring, whatever. There’s a lot there. But her name isn’t a problem and wasn’t her choice anyway. Judging her for that seems pretty petty.

    • Fiorella says:

Maybe she was born in the late 90s when Tommy girl T-shirts were popular? An inspiration for her parents perhaps ?

  10. Sam says:

She got suspended because what she said shows just how hypocritical the far right is. You can’t be limited government because you want your guns but then want the government to control a woman’s body.

Oh well. No sympathies from me. She should have been kicked off for the racists and bigoted things she typically says.

  11. Tanguerita says:

the worst thing about it is that this spat made her look “more acceptable” and gave her enough exposure to move on to greener pastures. Just you wait – two months from now we’ll be seeing this little blonde fascist martyr on FOX. Megyn Kelly’s spot is still available, right?

    • ScrewStewRat19 says:

She is already going to Fox. Once her contract with The Blaze is up she is set to go to Fox, but the deal has already been made. She isn’t going there because of this incident.

  12. Merritt says:

She is a horrible racist. She is also further proof that playing the cool girl who always agrees with bros and disparages other women is a losing game. The second you express even a brief independent thought, conservative bros and women will turn on you. Congrats Tomi, you played yourself.

    • eggyweggs says:

Nailed it, @Merritt. I hope Ms. Lahren takes a moment or two to see how quickly her cohorts turn on her when she doesn’t completely conform to their dogma. I have yet to see anything from her that indicates she’s capable of such reflection, but we’ll see. At least it looks like she’s keeping her clip-ins brushed, which is more than I can say for Kellyanne.

      • ScrewStewRat19 says:

Oh, I’m sure she will see how quickly they turn. I looked at her facebook last night and saw tons of comments from people saying they were done with her and unfollowing her page. Whether she has any deep thoughts or an epiphany about the situation, who knows lol

    • Neelyo says:

She should go on a redemption tour with Milo Yannalreadyforgethisname and they can sing a different tune in order to keep in the limelight.

      • eggyweggs says:

@Neelyo, last night I was like…what’s Milo’s last name again? And I felt grateful.

  13. QQ says:

*files Nails* I’d cape for truly damned near anybody else as it is Get her Out the Paint IDC IDC IDC #NOCOUNTRYFORTHISRACISTTRASH

  14. bread says:

    That tan looks painful.

  15. Ms.Lib says:

Thank you for telling it like it is! You are awesome.

  16. Ninks says:

It’s crazy, but it’s almost like the people who cry free speech whenever certain nazi’s or racists are prevented from speaking at universities have a completely different opinion when it comes to expressing pro-choice thoughts. I can’t believe the racist, bigoted, misogynistic, far-right are also hypocrites.

  17. Insomniac says:

Whatever. She’s not less appalling just because she accidentally let some common sense slip. I’m sure the pretty young blonde girl who panders to racists and fascists will be just fine.

  18. Layla Beans says:

I deliberately avoid her at all costs so I have one question – how do you pronounce her name? Is it like ‘Tommy’ or like ‘Toe-me’?

  19. Sayrah says:

I’m confused. Was this a pro choice because I like small government and therefore I don’t want the government paying for any of it but want them to stay out of it opinion? Sort of libertarian right?

I was initially surprised they suspended her then after 5 minutes I was reminded that free speech doesn’t mean you’re free from consequences just that you won’t be arrested. That goes for Billy bob getting fired for making racist comments on his Facebook page and her too. Based on her job I’m really not surprised.

  20. Taiss says:

How long until she’s declared the new face of feminism like they did Megyn Kelly?

  21. lizzie says:

When you lie down with dogs you get fleas. She was hired to read a hateful, bigoted, dangerous, racist, misogyny script. She went off script so – bye bitch!

  22. OriginallyBlue says:

I don’t feel sorry for her. Just few years ago she was fairly liberal. I guess she realized there was more money to be made as an ignorant racist troll.

  23. S says:

The funniest part is that she’s an ardent, adoring, almost obsessive Trump supporter, while her boss Glenn Beck has been EXTREMELY anti-Trump, even saying he voted for Hilary and thinks Trump should be impeached. So, THAT (seemingly much greater) difference of opinion wasn’t enough to get her suspended, but declaring that just maybe a bunch of old white men shouldn’t get to decide what a woman does with her own body? Nope, you’re off the air!

Also, agree 1000% about Noah, rising this woman’s profile exponentially. I haven’t even watched the Daily Show since he took over, and hadn’t heard her name until Noah put her on the map, but now she seems to be everywhere? Don’t feed the trolls, dude!

Though, let’s face it, the fact that she’s blonde, young and reasonably attractive is the ONLY reason she gets a pass from Noah, and many other men (like Bill Maher with Ann Coulter). None of them would ever give a bigger platform to, say, Rush Limbaugh, but her look-at-that-cute-little-thing-saying-this-terrible-stuff shtick, carries her far on the Left (calling out their own sexism) AND the right (yeah, we already knew they were sexist pigs).

    • Shark Bait says:

Beck and her other Blaze cohort, Matt Walsh, are super duper anti abortion. As in comparing it to the holocaust on several occasions. So this doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m not sure if it was calculated or not, but Tomi should have known better than to ever believe those two would let that comment slide!

  24. Dttimes2 says:

Is it just my phone or is she orange??? Is this a thing – to be blonde and orange. I am so confused

  25. adastraperaspera says:

What disturbs me most is how over the past year or so, respected media organizations and shows have started to routinely include a certain profile of young anti-feminist. These “commentators” have no domestic or foreign policy experience or credentials, and yet they are interviewed by serious journalists and/or featured on panels with actual experts. This has created a false equivalence and damaged national discourse. In most cases, these women do not demonstrate that they grasp issues even at the level of freshman college students I have taught. I believe their inclusion is a cynical ploy by executives who figure they can toss one of these “girls gone wild” characters into their serious news shows and boost ratings. Completely irresponsible.

  26. Pandy says:

Never heard of her so I suspect she’s looking for controversy to raise her profile. Chica’s gotta pay those tanning salon bills!

  27. Dumbledork says:

Is she morphing into trump? More blond, more orange? Equally racist and stupid.

  28. Rebecca says:

Conservative girls and women have abortions too. They just don’t tell anyone. In high school and college I had liberal and conservative friends. Two of my conservative friends had abortions. They did not tell their parents or the men who were the fathers of their babies. The only people they told were their close friends. I had liberal friends that had abortions too. The only difference was they told their mothers, who were liberal.

Later, the conservative women were still conservative and became pro-life. I say they are hypocrites. I feel sorry for their female children and the guilt they will feel if they do the same. Their mothers will never tell them.

I suspect that Tommy Lahren has had an abortion in the past. This is why she flip flops.

  29. Otaku Fairy says:

I have no sympathy for her, but she’s not wrong (for once).

  30. Fiorella says:

I’ve never been in a tanning bed but I heard it’s addictive and gives you endorphins like sunshine. Maybe that’s what happened here? Nice hair though. I don’t find her smart or interesting to any degree

  31. jana says:

She is Ann Coulter 2.0, with blonder hair, darker tan, whiter teeth and less of a horse face. I can’t stand either one of them, they both think the faster they talk and are able to spew bullshit, the less we will notice it’s total bullshit.

  32. Naddie says:

Ha! It happened to a stupid anti feminist dimwitt in here too. Tried to please sexist pigs by dissing women, got burned in the exit (by her disgusting crew ). I have less than zero sympathy for this gross one.
