Selena Gomez explains going public with her romance with The Weeknd

After keeping their union on the DL for a while, coming out in a big way at the Met Gala, Selena Gomez finally revealed why she took the her relationship with The Weeknd public. On Friday’s On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Selena talked about her music and, of course her new romance with the singer she’s “head over heels” in love with.

The singer confessed to Ryan that, “It’s really hard when I would want to spend so much time hiding things. It’s too much pressure, and I think everyone gets over everything eventually.” She added, “I just want to be happy. If that’s me just being myself, then I don’t really care.”

She went on to say that she was tired of hiding because she’s more comfortable not only with her career direction, but comfortable in her own skin, stating, “Because I’ve been doing this for so long, I don’t feel like there’s anything that I would want to…not necessarily hide, but I’m genuinely myself.”

Selena also talked about the mental health break she took last fall, spending some time at a treatment facility in Tennessee to deal with anxiety, panic attacks and depression. She explained her break by admitting that, “I needed a second to breathe. When I did that, I came back and I had it for a while, and I think it’s safe to say I feel like I have a whole album put together at this point. I wanted to make sure my life was balanced and happy and healthy first.”

And, for those who thought her song “Bad Liar” was about her new squeeze, Selena seemingly shot down that theory during the interview, telling Ryan, “The song actually was over a year ago. I was very much in a different place and I think it was more just telling a story…it was just a different place in my life then.” She also did tell fans that she was planning to move towards a more “moody” direction musically. It seems like the girl’s been through a lot in her 24 years. I’m sure she can do moody, but it would be nice for her to be happy for a while. Like him or not, I kind of hope her relationship with The Weeknd can be the source of some happiness for her.

Side note: I’m sad that she didn’t commit to that bob haircut. I really liked it.

She went public because she needed the pr boost. You’re not hiding when you make out behind dumpsters.

  2. yanni says:

I’m confused. What is she promoting right now?

  3. Louise177 says:

How was their relationship on the DL? They were constantly papped before the Met Gala, since January or February. Not talking about each other to the media is meaningless when they put up photographs and comments on social media.

  4. QueenB says:

Didnt she want to not be famous anymore?

  5. Heat says:

How was this relationship a ‘secret’, exactly? Does she think that, because she didn’t confirm it, nobody was actually aware?

  6. Beth says:

We’ve known about them for quite a while. She’s not very good at keeping things secret

  7. atorontogal says:

We’ve seen her draped all over him for months. What’s the secret?

  8. Sigh... says:

So I guess now it’s “secret” until they get acknowledgement on The ‘Gram/Twits? Never mind slobber sessions by a dumpster, overdressed museum tours, etc ALL DONE IN FRONT OF PAPS?

    Please…😒

  9. Henry says:

    She reeks of desperation.

Life is hard without a Disney show that keeps her face out-there on a weekly basis. Disney is notorious for droping their Starlets like a hot potato and move on to the next ‘thing’

  10. Rob says:

Maybe she’s looking to borrow some talent from the Weeknd. His music is great. She, on the other hand, is the blandest “celebrity” out there.

OOP! .. SAY FOR THE BACK!! Cause this is the REAL testimony ( though I’m not gonna Lie, the girl is serviceable for a running Playlist)

P.S: DON’T yall dare @ a grown ass woman about the “lewdness” of Druggie weekend Music .. DO.NOT.Start.WITH.Me.TODAY… (yes I’ve been putting this Tesfaye Disclaimer since Trilogy)

    • Frances says:

      no Demi is blander

I really like Bad Liar – it feels like a new sound/direction for her.

For someone with no looks and no talent to speak of, Selena is still trying her hardest to cling to the spotlight, but her music and everything about her just falls flat. I see the Weeknd moving on soon. His lyrics make it seem like he dates more model/hot chicks and she is as interesting as oatmeal.
