Naomi Watts’s 8 year-old son can’t wait to see her horror movie ‘The Ring’

Above is a photo of Naomi Watts in Armani at Paris Fashion Week where I can’t help but feel she got somewhat shafted by the designer. I like the crisp white jacket but it really doesn’t go with that girlish white dress with a floral overlay. Plus she (or a stylist) paired it with a beige purse and beige shoes. All white isn’t that hard to accessorize, you either go with matchy white shoes or dark/jewel tone shoes. Beige just doesn’t work in my opinion, but maybe I’m too much of a layperson to get it.

Watts has been promoting her new Netflix series, Gypsy, which is not doing well with critics at all. Outlets are questioning her career choices, particularly since her latest movie, The Book of Henry, was panned and did poorly at the box office. There aren’t as many roles for women past 40 as you know and she’s probably just taking the work that comes to her. She rarely talks about her personal life or her kids but she’s doing a little bit of that lately. Watts told US Magazine that her youngest son, Sam, 8, is very interested in horror movies and is obsessed with her film The Ring. Sam doesn’t get to watch any horror movies yet but he makes sure he knows all the plot details. He sounds like a kid after my own black heart.

“My youngest son is very into the horror genre. Not that he sees a lot of scary movies. He goes around asking people what’s the scariest movie they’ve ever seen and what the synopsis is and then he remembers it and talks about it like he’s seen it,” Watts explained, adding that her 8-year-old keeps bringing up her own horror flick [2002’s The Ring].

The film, which also stars Martin Henderson and Brian Cox, revolves around a cursed videotape. Anyone who watches it dies within seven days of viewing the footage.

Watts and her ex, Liev Schreiber, are also parents of 9-year-old son Alexander.

When asked how she balances life as a single mother, Watts told Us that she has good days and bad days.

“There are days when yes, I feel like it’s working almost to a science and there are days where it’s just chaos,” she shared. “It’s, you know, good days/bad days and ups and downs and I think I’m just a human being like everyone else and I do my best.”

[From US Magazine]

I like how honest and real she is about being a single mom and I can relate to that. This interview reminds me that Watts could embrace her scream queen status like Vera Farmiga, who really killed it in The Conjuring series and on Bates Motel. We need more high quality TV horror series and I love well made horror movies. (Sidenote: I finally saw It Follows this weekend and realized how much Stranger Things cribbed the style of that movie. Also, I know Watts is in the Twin Peaks reboot and I need to watch that.) That said, Watts just did Shut In last year and that movie was awful (or so I’ve heard). Maybe she needs to choose her scripts better. And get a new stylist while she’s at it.

I watched the first episode of gypsy and it was not good I think I turned it off before the end.

CB if you like horror tv series, I started watching the Exorcist TV series and the first episode of that was brilliant so that will probably be my go to for a while

Darn, I have been looking for something new to watch on Netflix and I thought it seemed promising. Especially because of her. Maybe it gets better?

      @Yellowrocket:

Lucky you, that you only wasted time on the first episode. I watched the whole season and it’s absolutely terrible! Boring, boring, and boring! Did I say boring? I only watched it because I love Naomi, but I can’t understand what the f-ck she was thinking when she signed on to that.

I think CB said it best: “she’s taking the work that comes to her.” So sad, because she is a fantastic actress, she can do anything, drama or comedy (I love her on Huckabees, so funny!).

Oh, and I’ve seen Shut In, and… MESS, TOO!

I’ve just started Gypsy. It has potential, but for me the storyline of the young woman S. (and her casting) just doesn’t work.My eyes glaze over doing those scenes.

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

I forced myself through the first episode, which was indeed boring as dry rice, but then I bingewatched the whole season. I cannot say that I have become a big fan but it was interesting and I was sick that day. Not sure what to think about the cheap lesbian plot with the weird age difference and mother daughter dynamics. I think there might be a nice plot twist coming up in season 2 with that psycho woman released, indicating that the blond heroine might not be so innocent at all. Anyway, I will continue watching it for no other reason than looking at Naomis lovely face.

Naomi is so pretty, And it seems she’s intelligent and has a kind heart. Don’t care about her clothes or movie reviews. She’s one of my fav celebs.

    • lizzie says:

i agree. she seems so sweet.

i am usually envious of her style – one off event in the hundreds where she slays is a great track record.

    • Esmom says:

I have been saying this pretty much since she and Liev split — I think she looks better now than she ever has, just fantastic.

  3. KLO says:

i have only seen clips of the ring and never want to see it again. It was heckin spooky.

  4. Alecs says:

I think 8 is still a bit too young for The Ring, but i cant wait for her son to see it! It was such an event for my generation (i was about 12 when it came out) and we were all genuinely scared by it. I try to watch it every year (i did it this year in preparation for Rings which wasnt good but wasnt that horrible either) and the sense of dread and wrong of the story is still palpable to this day. For a movie about a VHS, it aged really well in my opinion.

    • Penguen says:

It was a great horror movie, and also a great movie, in general. To this day, it’s one of my favorites. It was just really, really well done.

  5. grabbyhands says:

I haven’t seen her horror stuff because I’m way too chicken to watch scary movies, but I do think she’s a good actress and she is killing it in the current Twin Peaks season. I think she does well in “women on the verge” roles-she was great in I Heart Huckabees and Mullholland Drive too.

    • JC says:

She was amazing in Mulholland Drive. Her performance was staggering. The audition scene with Chad Everett is one of the great scenes of all time. I’ve always wondered if it’s shown in acting schools.

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

I don’t normally watch horror movies, for the same reason as you don’t, but I recommend you to consider giving The ring a try. It is not super super creepy and it is kind of a classic. Really good movie, that one.

  6. Karen says:

I really can’t stand the ankle length dresses. Heres a beautiful actress and it makes her look short and squat, just compare with tea-length purple dress. She looks miles taller – just ignore the ruffles that make it look like she tucked her breasts into her waistband. Maybe i hate most everything with fashion right now. Or I’m old and cranky. I don’t know.

  7. Esmom says:

Vera Farming just OWNED her role in Bates Motel, I would love to see Naomi find a similar role to embrace. I’m not a fan of horror really but I loved Bates because there was so much more to it than the horror aspect. Kinda how I felt about Breaking Bad — I didn’t think I’d be a fan of a show about a meth kingpin but there was so much more to it.

In any case, I hope Gypsy finds its groove or that she finds some quality roles soon.

  8. MoreSalt says:

CB, if you like horror movies, give Tucker and Dale vs. Evil a try. I thought it was pretty clever.

  9. Emily says:

I finished Gypsy and loved it. Naomi is such a great actress. The pacing is slow and her character is a female anti-heroine, which maybe turns some off. More people should give this show a try! It’s a great slow burn. All the characters are flawed in some way like the tagline suggests: “Who are you when no one’s watching?”

  10. KittyKat says:

I loved Gypsy! The director created a beautiful mood and Naomi was excellent.

  11. brooksie says:

Her stylist has a daughter with Naomi’s brother and they seem to be very good friends, so I don’t think she’s going anywhere.
