Are some people fascinated with Heidi and Spencer or do we all just loathe them?

speidi 140609

Heidi and Spencer Pratt (she seems to have lost the ‘Montag’ now) are constantly referred to as “that couple America loves to hate.” But why exactly is that? Is it because we envy them? Pity them? Because their lives are bound to end in a train wreck, and they’re the only ones who seem blissfully unaware of the impending crash? Because they just suck? Probably a combination. And from a purely scientific perspective, I love to watch the effects too many years of extreme peroxide use can have on the IQ of people with still-developing brains.

MSNBC spent a little time trying to figure out Speidi’s appeal. Or basically wrote an article nicely asking, “WTF is wrong with all of us?” Fair enough.

Heidi and Spencer Pratt’s Plasticine presence, which seems to have been delivered via wormhole from a strange land where people are shrink-wrapped in vacuous packages ready-made for reality TV, is the exact product that’s appeared on “The Hills,” countless magazine covers and most recently, NBC’s “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here.” So why do we care? We care because they are America right now.

The common denominator between those who claim to loathe and the few who admit to liking the couple is the idea that the couple represents the American dream. Or at least the current, common iteration of it, where the goals are to grow up, be beautiful, have money and be famous.

That notion, and the degree to which some hold it dear, might be everything that’s not right with our country and culture, but it’s also a dream that’s been documented and aspired to by people long before the Pratts began to torture our sensibilities one publicity stunt at a time. It’s a frame of reference that bridges the gap between the Pratts in a Costa Rican jungle, and you spending another night in front the TV… the fact that Spencer can induce synaptic seasickness with alarming brevity adds texture to their act (though they say it is not one), and is exactly what engages us just when we’re ready to run in the opposite direction.

That their success grows in direct proportion to what looks like nothing more than laziness and chicanery is bad enough. The fact that they play by the rules they seemingly wrote and we get sucked in only makes it worse. The only thing left to do is observe and hope that their American dream is one that we can all wake up from.

[From MSNBC]

Honestly I think it’s just about pandering to the lowest common denominator, and not actually caring about dignity of whether people like you. All Heidi and Spencer care about is making money, which is why they’ll show up at the opening of a car wash if you pay them enough. And they’re worth millions. In a bad economy. Really, they’re onto something, in a way.

I remember years ago seeing Anderson Cooper interview a woman who had been the longest working model ever. She was probably in her eighties at that point. He asked what the key to her career success was, and she said that she was never snooty. She’d walk down a runway or model a nightgown for a catalogue, and didn’t see one as better than the other. Whatever kept her working.

Now this model had a grace, dignity, and eloquence with which Heidi and Spencer have never been blessed. But it seems like they’re employing the same strategy. Need someone famous to run around your mattress warehouse being photographed in cheesy, unnatural poses? Speidi is there. Need to trek down to Costa Rica and add some drama with a stomach ulcer? Enter Heidi. Are they going to have long celebrity careers? No, and I think they know it. It’s like a lot of professions: you’ve got to get in and make all the money you can while you’re young. I think Heidi and Spencer are just working it for as long as they can. I want to club them over the head with a caveman-style mallet, but there’s a decent chance they’ll be retired in the next ten years.

Here’s Heidi and Spencer arriving at LAX Airport after returning from Costa Rica on Saturday. Images thanks to WENN.com .

even if it’s the last unread article in a magazine on a very long flight I refuse to even read picture captions if it’s about them. Their 15 minutes of fame is Sooooooooo over! They don’t even offer anything beneficial to theworld as the huge celebrities they think they are.

  2. SixxKitty says:

  10. scout7pg says:

See, I don’t understand why a site, say like this one, continues to add to their virtual scrapbook of coverage. You guys have a lot of good, fun, interesting, controversal stuff to comment on, why continue to hawk the latest outings of these twits? I feel that most fans of CB have a healthy (and oft voiced) disdain for them.

Of course, it there is an audience here who wishes to read about their daily onslaught against humanity than I apologize. I certainly am not going to claim that my celeb gossip interest is more sophisticated/worthy than someone else’s. However, it does seems that if polled, regulars of CB would rather see a full-on shutdown to all things Pratt + Montag. (I refuse to use their adopted moniker, I feel like everytime someone says it another $1 goes in their bank account. Also an angel dies.)

Can we take a vote? Would CB honor the results??

  11. wow says:

    Loathe.

And what’s worse is they have paid enough to become rich off of us loathing them. Ugh!

  12. ash says:

  13. Zoe (The Other One) says:

    I heart Wench.

  15. Obvious says:

@Ash, I was too overcome by the her the is eating her head to notice the bag that is eating the rest of her. Maybe they’ll win and we’ll just have to contend with one!

  16. Ron says:

I am aware of who these two are but have no idea why anyone cares. I can understand some of “reality” TV esp shows like Idol and Dancing with the Hasbeens and why they are popular. But I don’t get shows like this or why anyone cares. If I want to go watch a bunch of assholes I will go get a table at the Ivy on Robertson.

  17. msanthropist says:

“there’s a decent chance they’ll be retired in the next ten years.”

    Ten years? Ten years?!?!?!!!!

    Oh. Dear. God.

    *sobs brokenly*

Of course it would help if I didn’t keep clicking their damn links….

  18. Susette says:

    We all really loathe them.

  20. Joe says:

loathe, loathe, loathe, loathe. I call my sponsor every time I see or read something about these jacks. He tells me to turn it over and pray for them. I can’t.

  21. Trillion says:

At least Americans can be united about SOMETHING.

  22. Nony says:

    LOATHE

Yes please, a poll to see if Celebitchy readers want to see them boycotted.

  23. I Choose Me says:

Yup! I clicked as soon as I saw the headline to say that I would be happy never to see/hear anything from these two ever again. Please and thank you.

  24. Jules says:

After watching the Dark Knight last night (I know a little late). Why are they wasting our valuable resources and Heath Ledger is dead?

  29. Ka says:

Please, stop posting articles on them! It’s just too much already!

  30. Trey says:

That is an awfully big bag. It must be where she stuffed all her dignity. And no, I didn’t read the article, just looked at her uggy hat and monstrous bag, then applied the scroll.

@ash, I wrote this before reading comments; You are definitely spot-on.

  31. CeeJay says:

Interestingly these two have also found a way to make money for their siblings as well. We not only have Heidi and Spencer Pratt with no talent, but their sisters as well? Gotta hand it to them. They found their racket and they are swinging it for all it’s worth.

  32. wow says:

Revisting to add my vote for “boycott”.

    Yes, please.

  33. Lasherola says:

I don’t even know who they are. I don’t understand why they’re “news”. I actually care less about these two than the Gosselins. That’s a vote for “Loathe”!

  34. manda says:

    loathe. hate. detest.

  35. chrissymacq says:

    loathe.

    boycott.

  36. Kylie says:

Didn’t read the article but please stop reporting on them everyday! You are giving in to what they want. Dont you get that CB?

Its either Lydsay or these two wankers and now even Pratts sister! FFK! Give it up!!!!!!

  37. Susette says:

E!Online is having a poll on whether or not they should ban reporting on them forever. Can we please do the same here? Please, please, please?

  38. Cheyenne says:

    Heidi and Spencer who?

  39. BiggieShortie says:

    LOATHE.

And- I FART in their general direction.

  40. BiggieShortie says:

    @ Susette-

E!Online is having a poll on whether or not they should ban reporting on them forever. Can we please do the same here? Please, please, please?

THANK YOU for posting that info! I just popped over to eonline.com and scrolled down to the post and VOTED.

    ENOUGH of these assholes, please!

  41. MB says:

Me too, loathe and boycott. Stop killing the angels!

  42. Kath Jaynes says:

I, for one, loathe the pratts.

    They’re 15 seconds can’t end soon enough for me…

  43. enoughofthese2 says:

LOATHE. an even MORE for the fact that they dont realize it- they literally think they are gods gift to the world. E! News is probably gonna stop reporting on them. They have an online survey where viewers get to vote if they stay on their channel or not. Obviously i, and what looks like to be the VAST majority of people voted against them. Celebitchy, if you followed their lead i think this could be a BIG step for this country. Lol SERIOUSLY the whole concept of what they’re about really is the downfall of our culture.

  44. tko says:

LOATHE, Never ever read the articles, just pass them by.

  45. Rachel says:

Absolutely loathe them!! No one should support their shows, books, magazines OR whatever they’re selling – then they’ll have to go away! Stop buying & we can put Speidi out of business once & for all!

  46. msanthropist says:

    Loathe and boycott.

Now I’m off to E!Online to vote – woohoo!!

  47. Jazz says:

Loathe! Send them in a rocket to hell!
    Off to EOnline now…

  48. Zoe (The Other One) says:

If we add all our loathing together into one big ball of loathing does this mean we have enough loathing to demand they be put to death for the good of mankind?

    Just an idea.

  49. zonalpony says:

revisiting article to cast my vote of BOYCOTT!!

  50. Carolyn J. says:

I can’t care enough to hate. What I do hate is having them constantly pushed in my face. I would love to see the media – including this site – looking away from them and never discussing them again.
