Saoirse Ronan in custom Louis Vuitton at the SAG Awards: pretty in pink?

24th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards

Pour one out for Lady Bird, I guess no one in SAG-AFTRA wanted to reward an actress-turned-director or a female-led film. Lady Bird was shut out of the SAG Awards and I’m kind of torn up about it. So many people want to dismiss Lady Bird as *just* a simple coming-of-age film, but peeps: it was written and directed by a woman, the lead role is played by a young actress who is giving her second Oscar-worthy performance in three years and, oh right, the critics love this film, as do filmgoers. If this film was a beautifully handled coming of age film about a guy, written and directed by a dude, the awards season would be going a lot differently. This does not give me a lot of hope for the Oscar nominations coming out tomorrow. Sadface.

But let’s talk about fashion. Saoirse Ronan wore a custom Louis Vuitton gown which… I mean, it’s one of the better LV gowns out there, but that’s setting the bar pretty low. This looked prettier in motion, honestly, but in photos, you can see how the design is sort of “off.” The black ribbon faux-belt in particular was a stupid and unnecessary design choice. Greta Gerwig wore Bottega Veneta and Laurie Metcalf wore Sachin & Babi, a dress with a weird “illusion netting” on the top. None of these looks were my favorite.

I would’ve like Saoirse’s gown without that belt and if the silver ribbon had stopped just under her armpits. Her makeup could’ve been better though.

Greta’s gown cannot be saved. Is that chartreuse? Bleh.

  2. AnnaKist says:

Nope. That silver ribbon thing is how kindergarten kids decorate plain outfits in the dress-up box. Does this girl ever smile, or is her sour look meant to remind us that she’s “a serious actress”? Never mind. All the dresses are awful. These ladies would have been better off going to that quirky little shop near the mall and finding something unique and at a fraction of what these dresses cost. Note to Ms Metcalf: Illusion netting doesn’t even look good on ice dancers.

She doesn’t look “sour”—she’s smiling in two of the photos, and in the other two her expression is pleasantly neutral. There’s nothing wrong with not constantly walking around with the characteristic American open-mouthed toothy grin.

I wonder if LV is kicking themselves for paying so much for Emma Stone’s contract being that her movie fizzled out.
I really liked Ladybird and Get Out this year but haven’t bothered with the rest (it’s just such a time commitment to drive to the cinema).

The best LV gown on a red carpet was the one that Ruth Negga wore to either the GG or the SAGS last year. Everything else is just garbage, that includes the dress that Saoirse is wearing.

Greta’s dress is too long. I guess the color is ok.

Even with the weird netting at the top, Laurie’s dress is the best of the bunch. I hope aunt Jackie gets an Oscar win. I don’t think she will though, possibly just a nomination.

  5. Shutterbug99 says:

None of these looks are great. Greta’s is especially bad.

  6. Danielle says:

I really liked saoirse’s gown. From farther away I liked Laurie, when you couldn’t see the netting.

    • Esmom says:

Agreed on Saorise’s, although my only minor quibble is that the sleeves look a little baggy. I actually kinda liked Greta’s — maybe because I didn’t like that white gown with the heart she wore last time, this one is more flattering to her figure — and I also agree that Laurie’s was pretty when you couldn’t see that netting.

    • tracking says:

I think Saoirse looked lovely, also agree about Laurie’s dress.

Gosh, they could have called each other first to coordinate a little! This is a terrible trio of dresses and clustering them together, not a good look. Too bad. Loved the movie, love Greta and the leading ladies…fingers crossed for an Oscar nod.

  8. smee says:

Greta Gerwig’s gown – the fabric looks so thick and stiff, the color is horrible and the studs….

The netting on Laurie Metcalf’s gown is all I can see. Really makes her neck look bad in comparison.

Saoirse Ronan gown was the closet to hitting the mark, but once again, that belt, and it’s kind of boring. She’s very striking looking – I can’t believe no one wanted to put her in something incredible. Also can’t believe there’s no love for LB during awards season.

The first paragraph of this post is 100% true. Especially the last few sentences. Ladybird was a nearly perfect movie in every way. Sexism is the only reason why it is not getting its due.

      +1

Ladybird is the one film I would say that I hope all readers of Celebitchy see. This film is the culmination of so many emotions, and on paper it is so much of what we want for women in cinema. Pls readers, see this film!

    • lobstah says:

STRONGLY disagree. Just because there’s a film out by a woman, doesn’t mean they should just load it up with awards for that reason alone. Talk about condescending. “Hey, you made a movie! Here’s some awards!”

Secondly, Frances McD was an insanely amazing female lead in a heavily male cast – shouldn’t that be a win for women, as well?

  10. Lizzie says:

all three of their heads looked really beautiful. the dresses were meh but not terrible. you can see how they might have been going for ease and comfort.

  11. Mary says:

No to all. From the neck up, they all looked gorgeous. Those dresses though….

  12. Yup, Me says:

I have surprisingly strong feelings about the color of Greta’s dress. They aren’t good ones.

  13. Ozogirl says:

I don’t like Saoirse Ronan with blonde hair. It makes her look like everyone else. Brunette or dirty blonde would suit her better.

  14. KatieBo says:

I know this is such an unfair thing, but you know when you see someone and their very visage just BUGS. There’s no explanation or anything, but they just annoy you? For me that’s Greta Gerwig. I can’t explain it.
One thing I can explain that her hair rarely, if ever, actually works.

  15. Pandy says:

I LOVE Saoirse’s dress! Especially the string belt! It’s like a renaissance gown. Love it.
Greta’s isn’t bad either (for her) although the color is a bit baby diarrhea.
I LOVED Laurie’s gown … except for the netting. Sigh.

  16. I Choose Me says:

Don’t like it. It washes her out. Like her styling though.

OTH Laurie Metcalf looks fab! If only there was no illusion netting but I still think she pulls it off. I also really like the detailing on Greta’s dress.

  17. serena says:

I like Saoirse Ronan a lot (even though I can’t pronounce her name), but this pink dress is just forgettable -and I hate that pink confetti shade of pink, even worse paired with metallic stripes on the sides.
