Ryan Reynolds entertains Make-a-Wish kids on the set of Deadpool 2

I know Ryan Reynolds is kind of a polarizing figure around these parts, but I have loved him since Just Friends and Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. I’m completely over super hero movies (sorry, Black Panther) but am kind of looking forward to Deadpool 2. The first one was so much fun, mainly because Ryan is such an affable smart ass.

Say what you will about the 41-year-old Canadian, he is a good guy – especially when it comes to bringing the smile to the faces of some deserving kids. On Monday, Ryan entertained a group of kids and their families from the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The actor shared photos from the moving encounter on Instagram, giving credit to the foundations which made it possible. In the caption, Ryan also gave a special shout out to the movie’s Prop Master, Dan Sissons “for making sure every kid left with his/her own sword,” clarifying that the sword were made of bamboo, and weren’t “the stabby-stabby” kind. Making the whole experience even more special, Ryan autographed each of the swords and personalized them for the kids by adding individual messages. Whatta guy.

Of course, since we just can’t have nice things, some commenters on Ryan’s sweet post took it upon themselves to point out that Deadpool isn’t really a movie for kids. Ryan addressed the criticisms, writing, “Yup. Deadpool is Rated R. If my kid went through a fraction of the s*** these kids deal with daily, I think they can watch whatever they like. That’s just my .02 cents.” Touché, Ryan. Way to put the haters in their place.

This isn’t the first time Ryan teamed up with Make-a-Wish. When he was working on the first Deadpool, Ryan met a young fan and Make-a-Wish kid named Connor McGrath, who sadly passed away from cancer two years ago. When Ryan shared the news on his Facebook page, he gushed about Connor. “He was unqualified funny. He had that…thing. That thing you see in great performers or comedy writers.” He added that Connor saw a rough cut of Deadpool with him before he died. Ryan also had a FaceTime meeting with a five-year-old boy with an inoperable brain tumor named Daniel Downing from Plympton, England.

In other news, Ryan is following in the footsteps of stars like Diddy, George Clooney, and Channing Tatum and has now gotten into the distilled spirits business. Ryan has partnered with Aviation Gin and will be the face of the brand. It’s a celebrity endorsement worthy of the man who plays an unconventional superhero. Ryan announced the partnership on Twitter, joking, “In the long and in no way disastrous marriage of showbiz and alcohol, so happy to announce I’m the proud owner of a gin company.”

That’s sweet, he seems genuinely into it.

  2. Sparkly says:

Why is he a polarizing figure? I’ve only ever heard good things. I like him a lot, even though I really didn’t expect to when I first saw him.

Supposedly Deadpool isn’t a kids’ movie, but my six year old loves him.

    • Kitten says:

I think he’s gotten a ridiculous amount of undue flack and I’m not entirely sure why. Could be related to the fact that he married Blake Lively, but I remember hearing unusually harsh criticism of his acting which…I don’t get because he’s objectively not a bad actor at all.

This was a really nice story, though. Very sweet.

      • Misti says:

He was so great in The Voices and Mississippi Grind.
I wish he would do those kind of films concurrently with the likes of Deadpool.

      • Ms. Blake says:

I seem to recall there were some rumors floating around that he cheated on Alanis Morissette while they were engaged or something. She wrote the song “Torch” about their break-up but that song is more sad than vengeful so I’m not sure if the rumors were true.

      • Bridget says:

He deserved all the flak in the world for Green Lantern. That was SO BAD.

    • EOA says:

There was a lot of chatter when his marriage to ScarJo ended that he was controlling but I suspect it was just that they were fundamentally incompatible. He and Blake Lively seem a lot more on the same page re what they want in terms of family and career.

      • HelloSunshine says:

Yeah I think him and ScarJo just weren’t compatible, which stinks but it happens, doesn’t mean a husband or wife is controlling, they just want different things.

I personally love Ryan, I think he’s hilarious. Sometimes it’s definitely cringey but in a good way if that makes sense. And him and Blake on social media makes me happy, they seem like a good fit for each other.

    • Sherry says:

I don’t get it either. I love him and I love him with Blake. Our family loved Deadpool and can’t wait for Deadpool 2!

    • Tiffany says:

As someone pointed on Twitter when he sent out a tweet about Black Panther, ‘You got married on a plantation dude’.

And when I pointed that out about him on this site, I was ripped apart and Blake got a bulk of the blame because of her fascination with slavery (yeah, I ain’t playing that Antebellum game) and he got a pass. So unless she married a cardboard cutout of him on that plantation, yeah, he gets the side eye from me.

But for me it was always his attitude. This 180 came when he needed a hit with Deadpool. That always seems to be forgotten.

    • Sparkly says:

Thanks, everyone, for explaining it to me. I’ll definitely pay closer attention, but for now I’ll keep enjoying him and his movies.

  3. Rapunzel says:

Bravo for him putting the haters in their place. Deadpool ain’t for kids, but come on, you really think Make a Wish Kids don’t warrant an exception?

  4. Lotusgoat says:

I didn’t realize people disliked Ryan?

  5. smcollins says:

I’ve loved him since TGaGaaPP, too. Incredibly funny, incredibly kind-hearted, and incredibly good-looking. What’s not to love?

  6. GreenBunny says:

I too have loved him since Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza shop, and he just keeps getting hotter with age.

  7. Jess says:

I’ve loved him since Two Guys too, although I didn’t enjoy his serious action hero phase. Love him as Deadpool and good for him for doing this. But you should see Black Panther – it is something special.

  8. Gutterflower says:

I love Ryan and Sandra Bullock in The Proposal. Such a cute movie.

  9. SJhere says:

Good for him! Seems a nice guy.

  10. Bridget says:

He’s right and they’re right. That is NOT a kids movie.

  11. harla says:

Big kudos to the Prop Master for taking the time to put together the swords for the kids to take with them. It looks like a lot of time and effort went into crafting these bamboo swords so these kids would have a token of what was probably a very special day for them.

  12. CeeCeeSays says:

Ryan Reynolds can get it!! Love that guy. Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Parlor was my favorite show way back in the day. They were playing old reruns recently on some random cable channel.

  13. Igotbiglipsandicannotlie says:

I noticed the Nickelodeon show “Fifteen” was on Hulu so I started watching it to catch some early 90s feels and low and behold-there was a very young Ryan Reynolds! He was so cute.

  14. FHMom says:

Deadpool was so good. Even non superhero fans can appreciate it. Ryan did a good thing with those kids and that photo of him holding the bottle is hot.

  15. Happy21 says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for him as a fellow British Columbian but I never got the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ thing with him – at all. He just never did it for me. Until now. And it’s not his looks, his bod or anything esthetic. It is his heart. He is a genuinely good person. I love that.

  16. Renee says:

What a nice story. I love the work he does for Make A Wish charities.

  17. BostonStrong says:

I adore Ryan Reynolds! There is nothing sexier than a great sense of humor!!

  18. Jovan says:

Make a Wish, Ryan Reynolds. I am Deadpool now. You killed my father.

    Prepare to die.
