Avril Lavigne was asked about the long-standing conspiracy that she’s dead

Avril Lavigne celebrates her 30th birthday at Bank

Since I was never an Avril Lavigne fan, I never paid much attention to the ridiculously detailed conspiracy theory that Avril died at some point and was “replaced” by a body-double named Melissa Vandella. Ordinarily, I enjoy a good conspiracy theory, and if this was just a harmless and fun thought experiment, I might have gotten into it. But there was something really macabre about how detailed the conspiracy became, with theories about Avril dying by suicide and how “Melissa’s face” looked so much different. What’s also weird is that… Avril still looks Avril. It’s not like she stepped out at some point with an entirely new face, which is what Lady Gaga, Renee Zellweger and Uma Thurman have all done in the past decade.

Anyway, the conspiracy theory has been around since 2005, and it’s grown to the point of established urban legend at this point. I’m pretty sure that Avril has addressed it in various ways in the past 13 years, but people are still asking. Avril is currently promoting her new music – her first in years, since her Lyme disease diagnosis – and she called into the Australian radio show Kyle & Jackie O. They asked her about the conspiracy. This is what happened:

Of course none of this has never really been addressed by Avril herself, and so this morning while Kyle and Jackie O were chatting to the singer they decided to ask her about them straight out.

“What about, did you laugh at the rumours that went around where you no longer exist and there’s a clone of you?”, asked Jackie.

Now this is where it gets a bit foggy. Avril’s answer could really be taken two different ways…Let us explain. On one hand, Avril can be heard laughing and saying that the rumours were strange. Meaning she might have been denying them.

“Yeah some people think that I’m not the real me which is so weird! Like why would they even think that,” she said. On the other hand, you could say that Avril never actually flat out denied them. Not only that, BUT what was incredibly strange and creepy was that as soon as Jackie asked this question, the phone line turned really weird! Avril went a bit robotic, cut out and times, and even accidentally started pressing random buttons making a beep sound! Is it just a coincidence that things started going haywire with the line as soon as we asked about the Melissa theories? Or was someone doing it…DELIBERATELY!!

I’ve been looking around for the audio to see if it really was that weird. Now I’m wondering: am I on the wrong side of pop culture history? Is the “Avril-is-dead-and-now-we’re-seeing-Melissa” conspiracy actually pop culture canon at this point? Am I the only who doesn’t believe it? I believe in a lot of dumb conspiracies, so why can’t I cross this particular bridge??

OMG— static, beeping noises!? Over the PHONE?! The phone, you guys!!! 😱

It must surely be anything other than normal call interference!! She didn’t outright deny that she is a clone, so I’m confident that she is in fact a clone! Or maybe an alien trying to pass for a clone! The strange beeps on the line confirm it! Not a coincidence, no way no how!

All that’s left to do is pray that this Avril clone is advanced enough to take down the Melania clone 🙏

Or… unlikely as it seems, let’s make sure we’ve considered all possibilities. Maybe it’s just a really slow gossip day for that radio show. Just kidding. Long live our alien overlords!!

(Sydneysider here) Jackie O & Kyle are essentially shock jocks. So I assume it was a slow news for them and they made a mountain out of molehill.

ITA about the whole phone line thing. I work at a Call Centre and phones can make weird noises depending on the connection.

Makes sense! Thanks for the inside scoop.

Oh man, I really hope it was clear that I was attempting satire in my previous comment 🤦🏻‍♀️

    • MarcelMarcel says:

@stumpycorgi the satire was entertaining! And because I work at call centre my immediate thought was who’d care phones make weird noises.
My favourite is when the my voice is echoed back to me so I’m having a conversation with myself and the person on the line. While still trying to sound professional.

      • Stumpycorgi says:

Haha @MarcelMarcel, I have worked at a call center before and had that same experience!! Trying to sound professional while ignoring the playback of your own voice on a half-second delay 🤣 Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊

I think leaning into the conspiracy theory and refusing to deny she’s a clone, or subtly insinuating she might be one, the best thing Avril could do for her career. Bring it on. Become conspiracy famous.

This is the first I’ve heard of this, but I also am entertained working out the logic of these conspiracy theories – how does the lookalike replacement explain her voice? I heard her new song the other day and it caught my attention specifically because of that powerful voice she has always had.

  4. Rando says:

I find the theory hilariously entertaining and as a Canadian I believe the less Avril the better whether it be through secret death or by obscurity. I’m not excited to hear she is still releasing music.

  5. MarcelMarcel says:

I agree with you, Kaiser. The Avril conspiracy theory is too macabre for me to engage with.
I prefer other thought experiments like the butterfly effect.

So at least now I know someone else understands why I never liked the theory to begin with. I suspect her retreating from the public eye to cope with Lymes disease is a part of why the theory gained traction.

  6. Trillian says:

Who would even care enough to pull this off?

  7. Nancito says:

@Kaiser – what are these “conspiracy theories” that you believe in? I need to know so that I can adopt these beliefs as well. Thanks!

I can’t forget that she elbowed Kelly Clarkson at an award show. I love Kelly-avril has always seemed pissed then dates assholes so yeah-never liked her music in high school when she debuted and her attitude wasn’t very appealing either. she’s my age and been divorced twice already-
