Slumdog’s Rubina Ali reveals: Nicole Kidman is “strange”

It was reported several weeks ago that Rubina Ali, one of the young child stars in Slumdog Millionaire, was going to publish her autobiography. Rubina is 9 years old. I kind of hoped the rumor was just crap, but the Daily Mail got their hands on an early copy of Slumgirl Dreaming: My Journey to the Stars. In case any of you thought that Rubina might have sat around typing up her autobiography, the Mail points out a person they refer to as “the book’s writer, Divya”. Technically, according to Random House, the book was co-written by Rubina, Divya Dugar, and Anne Berthod, although Rubina is the only one to get credit on the book’s cover.

Anyway, the book promises the inside story on Rubina’s life – the making of Slumdog Millionaire, and everything that happened after. This includes the tabloid story that originated out of News of the World that Rubina’s father and uncle were trying to sell her. Divya Duger claims that Rubina has “blind faith” in her family, and refuses to believe they would do anything to harm her.

The most-tabloid friendly revelation comes from Rubina’s take on meeting Nicole Kidman. Rubina and Nicole filmed a Schweppes ad together several months ago in India. The ad itself is extremely bizarre, and I hope I’m not offending anyone when I offer the opinion that Nicole’s creepy frozen face is a large part of why the ad didn’t work. At one point, Nicole is rubbing Rubina’s face, and Nicole tries to smile and it comes out as a grimace. Well, Rubina thought Nicole was a strange bird too – Rubina describes Nicole as quiet and shy, and Rubina thought it was “strange” that Nicole refused to go out in the sun at all, fearing for her skin:

She may be only nine years old, but Slumdog Millionaire actress Rubina Ali has made history by becoming the youngest person to ‘write’ an autobiography. In her new book Slumgirl Dreaming: Journey to the Stars, the child star gives an insight from her rise from the slums of Mumbai to Hollywood fame and back again.

She also gives her opinion on ‘strange’ Nicole Kidman, who she starred alongside in a soft drinks advertisement.

In the 192 page book written by journalist Divya Dugar, who spent the past six months following Rubina, only 24 pages feature her pre-Slumdog life. As well talking about making the multi Oscar-winning film and the recent demolition of her home in the Mumbai slums, Rubina also discusses her more recent acting job.

Rubina was reportedly paid more than her Slumdog salary for three days work on a French Schweppes advert, which she filmed on location in India with Nicole. Rubina played a small child enchanted with Nicole’s Indian princess character in the bizarre ad’s confusing plotline.

Despite sharing a trailer together, Rubina admitted she didn’t get to know the Australian actress very well. In the book, she said: ‘I really liked her, but she was very quiet and didn’t speak much. I think she was a bit shy.’

She goes on to describe the actress as ‘strange’ because she refused to come out of her trailer over the whole shoot, seemingly afraid of the sun on her alabaster complexion.

Rubina was discovered by director Danny Boyle when he auditioned hundreds of children from the Mumbai slums last year and cast her as the younger version of Freida Pinto’s character Latika.

In the book, Rubina admitted the success of the film hasn’t changed her life so much, because she returned to the slums again after attending the Oscars in Hollywood March. But she admits she now has higher standards of hygiene and will walk a long distance to find a pay-for toilet rather than urinate by the railway tracks like she used to.

The book’s writer Divya said: ‘She knows a lot more about the world beyond the slum. She has seen what life is like for the rich. She has seen the other side of the picture and knows now that life can be better.’

Rubina’s father Rafiq also vehemently denies reports he tried to cash in on his daughter’s movie fame by offering to ‘sell’ her for £200,000.

Divya added: ‘She has a blind faith in her family, she thinks they couldn’t have done anything to harm her.’

Rubina is now living at an uncle’s house after her shanty home was demolished by Indian authorities in May. The youngster admitted she doesn’t known where her Slumdog salary has gone, but a lot of it is believed to have funded her father’s medical treatment for a broken ankle.

She said: ‘I’m not sure I got all of it, or where it has all gone.’

Thanks to a trust set up by Boyle and the Slumdog producers, Rubina and co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail are attending school and are having homes built for them.

[From Daily Mail]

One of the Slumdog Millionaire kids, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, has already been moved into his new apartment, and supposedly Rubina will be getting hers soon too. You know what I‘d like to hear about? Her visit with Gerard Butler! In May, while Gerard was visiting India, he treated the Slumdog Millionaire kids to a day out and he totally partied with them. That is what I want to hear about.

Here’s Rubina in Paris on July 1st. Images thanks to Fame Pictures .

as an extrodiarlily white girl, i can say there are reasons my kind stay out of the sun – skin cancer at age 27 is but one that comes to mind.

Sometimes its not about being weird. It is her profession to look good, and one would think getting cancers scraped off her face would be bad for business.

  2. jabberingaway says:

    it’s a cool ad….all are beautiful people….very creatively produced!

  3. HEB says:

I agree Lola–I think Kidman is wise to stay out of the sun, but since Rubina probably hasn’t met too many really pale people she doesn’t understand.

  4. oakdsfklj says:

That ad was wierd but stunning! rubina is adorable im definitely reading her biography and wish all the best for her

  5. someone says:

I just watched the ad, and I didn’t see anything wrong with it..Nicole looked great.

  6. AC says:

Staying out of the sun is probably not a concept she’s used to so of course she thinks it’s strange.

  7. Beth says:

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. Nothing in this story indicates that Nicole is “strange”. She has always been a quiet person and always protects herself from the sun. A lot of redheads stay out of the sun because their skin is usually so pale and they burn easily. Also take into consideration that this is coming from a 9 year old from a different culture.

  8. westindya says:

i like the add. she didn’t look stiff.

  9. BlueSkies says:

Nicole avoids the sun because she is hiding who she truly is- a freckled ginger. She reminds me of MJ in denying who she really is. She tries to come off as a girl from Sweden.

  10. Rosanna says:

Quite frankly, being afraid of going in the sun is the most normal rumor I heard about NK!!! It’s perfectly normal for a fair-skinned person to be terrified of the sun. You try getting a sun burnt every time then you’ll know what I mean.

  11. hmm says:

Unless Nicole is an albino, it is extremely weird not to come out of her trailer for fear of the sun. It is possible to be extremely careful without being excessive. The commercial is visually stunning but makes absolutely no sense, but I’m glad to see the girl getting paid a decent salary.

  12. KateNonymous says:

The commercial is what’s strange, although it’s entirely possible (indeed, likely) that I’m missing cultural references. But depending on what the days were like, I–as a redhead–can see why Nicole might stay indoors if the sun was really intense while she was there. This just sounds like something that didn’t match the experience of a 9-year-old.

  13. Giz says:

Kidman does look creepy in the ad. Not to mention she comes off as sounding like a total ditz with her voice and, what I think is a slight squeal. Is it now wonder the ad is a dud?

Why choose a white blonde woman to play an Indian Princess? It’s like watching the caste system totally at work here! Watching the young Rubina rub Kidman’s face it just short of her asking, what’s like to be you and white?
    European imperalism strikes again?

As far as Rubina’s autobio is concerned, I bet even at her young age and given her circumstances; her life, thus far, is probably a far more interesting read than Kidman’s was at age 40.

  14. the original kate says:

i think it’s wise to not sunbathe, but to not go outside at all? that seems odd. has nicole ever heard of an amazing invention called sunblock? or she could just wear a big straw hat – that’s what i do when i’m at the beach or at a picnic or something, because i’m pale, too.

  15. SugaMama says:

Blueskyes, the freckled type has to avoid the sun the most. And by the way, I don’t think Nicole is trying to pretend she is from Sweden. Jealous?

  16. bros says:

its called SPF. go buy some and quit being such a facial paralysis image and youth obsessed ice queen neurotic freak. i cant stand nicole kidman. yah, hanging out one hour in the sun with some sunblock on is going to ruin your face kidman. I’m blonder and paler than she is and im not in the habit of pretending to be a vampire.

  17. wow says:

I don’t get the creative concept of this ad, but that little girl Rubina is an absolute doll.

Nicole looks nice here. Not overly botoxed for a change.

  18. hmmm says:

Is Nicole Kidman the new Michael jackson?

  19. Kylie says:

Nicole looks beautiful! This is just your usualy Nicole bashing. *yawn*
Nicole is a red head with freckles so yeah she has to stay out of the sun.

  20. Lee says:

More recent pics of Nicole show she has returned to her natural red colour, with curls, and she looks so much prettier and younger that way.

I find it hard to believe she has had no one in her life to tell her to stop with the torturous hair-straightening and bleaching. I know I found it hard to respect her as she expended so much effort to erase her natural beauty and charm for some slightly bizarre, frozen image. Obviously insecurity knows no boundaries – not even the rich and famous are immune…

  21. Vicky Cathay says:

Ah, what price beauty? Afraid to go out in the sun lest all the plastic melt.

  22. RobN says:

It’s India. Ever been there? It’s 120 degrees and it smells. If you had an airconditioned trailer you’d have been in there, too. Nothing strange about that.

  23. Persistent Cat says:

I’m pale too (not a redhead though) and if the sun is intense, I don’t like to be in it. Yes there is sunblock but the sun in India is different than North American or European sun. And if she’s made up for the ad, they may not have put sunblock on her.

I’m sick of being made to feel like I’m stupid for not wanting to go in the sun. Yes I like the sunlight but I don’t like the feel of sun on my skin nor do I want it to age me.

  24. Miffy says:

Nicole bashing? By an 8 year old? I don’t think so.

I think Nicole is just as strange as her ex-husband. They both mean well and seem very loving and generous people, but they are socially awkward. Actually, Tom is a lot less awkward than Nicole.

Let’s hope for the best with Sunday, Suri, Connor and Isabella. Those are their kids’ names, I hope.

  25. erika says:

isnt Nicole’s real hair color red? I cant blame her for not wanting to go out into the sun. Just look at Lindsay Blowhan. Her skin is nasty! I’m not surprised that this kid would find not being able to go into the sun strange since you know, there arent many redheads in India.

As to being shy, how the fuck is that weird? Millions of people are shy.

  26. hmmm says:

nicole’s natural hair color is not red anymore… it’s gray

  27. Lee says:

    @hmmm
    I stand corrected – you’re right – she’s grey. As is J.Lo.

  28. erika says:

@hmmm that doesnt mean that she doesnt burn horribly and get nasty freckles just because she has gray hair you moron.

  29. Iris says:

if I were pale and prone to sunburn I would be sure to stay out of the sun.. especially if I were shooting a commercial.

  30. hmmm says:

where did I say anything about her “nasty freckles”? lol i was talking about her hair.

  31. nelly says:

Don’t want to be mean, but why this little girl making a biography? She didn’t live anything yet. Seems to me like a explotation of her family.
By the way, Kidman’s add is just odd! Why did you expect, hahaha!?
    Dump

  32. jaudicemachine says:

Ha! I totally thought little Rubina was standing in front of the Gateway to India – and I thought it was weird that there weren’t any tourists climbing around on the architecture . . . And then I realized I was dumb.

*RobN – I’d hate to go backpacking with you and Freeze-Face Kidman. You couldn’t keep me in my hostel room in Mumbai!

(Then again, the closest I got to air conditioning in India was sitting by an open window in a commuter bus from Tamil Nadu to Kerla. Though Darjeeling and Sikkum were very pleasant by comparison.)

Ps – I’ve never met a serious traveler who doesn’t carry 1) an English to “whatever” dictionary, 2) poop paper and strong antacids, and 3) sun screen!!

  33. ogechi says:

i really hate jealous bunch and pple who are jealous of others do not go beyond where they are..Nicole kidman is a great woman, alot of contributors here can not get to where she has reached till they die,so get off ur dump life and celebrate achievers like Nicole…Haters suffer more than the hated.

  34. Bella says:

As a fair-skinned redhead in my 30’s, I live in far from sunny Canada and wear sunscreen everyday including winter…

I wouldn’t expect a 9 yr old child from Mumbai to understand that in the hot Indian sun, light-complected people are at high risk for skin cancer even if they were a high SPF…

STRANGE is redheads like Lindsay Lohan who use spray tan to get an unnatural orange glow, yet, that has become the norm…

  35. Jaded says:

Totally agree with you Bella. I’m a fair-skinned redhead in my mid-fifties and started early on avoiding the sun and using sun-screen. Today my skin looks amazing, like I’m in my thirties. So lighten up on Nicole everyone, she depends on her face for a living, and not wanting to go out into boiling hot weather, smelly air and blinding sunshine would be my choice too!

  36. Michelle says:

Nicole is trying to look the same in her forties as she did in her twenties. I feel sorry for her. She doesn’t even look like herself anymore. She used to be an imperfectly natural beauty who people could relate to, now her wax image looks more like her than she does. Those lips, those cheeks, alllll that botox. Fame does horrible things to women, at least the extremely insecure ones. Poor thing…

  37. Michelle says:

Also, as someone with Nicole’s fair skin who has not been in the sun overmuch, given 12 hour shifts in as a nurse, my skin does look extremely young for my age. I freckle before I tan, but I don’t care. Vitamin D deficiency is the leading cause of everything from breast cancer to depression and Multiple Sclerosis (which I have). Now I wish I’d worried less about my skin and gotten that good, natural source of vitamin D from the sun! Looks mean little when every day is a battle just to perform life’s necessities! Even dematologists now tell their patients to get a moderate amount of sun, which puts down a natural, nonchemical sunscreen and screens out the rays that reach down deeper into the skin and cause skin cancers. Most cancers are the result of childhood exposure anyway. Nothing Nicole does at this point is going to make any difference for twenty or more years. Is she going to continue trying to look like she’s under thirty then too? It wouldn’t surprise me.

  38. Cletus says:

I used to not like NK, but every since TC did her dirty like he did I have felt a little nicer toward her. That being said, she really needs to quit fucking with her face. She IS starting to look weird.

    TCLTC

  39. PJ says:

It must seem strange to this child that anybody would want to stay out of the sun. She grew up in a slum — these people didn’t even have enough to eat and live in very unclean conditions, so I’m sure they don’t sit up nights worrying about freckles or skin cancer.

Nicole Kidman, on the other hand, is literally coming from a different world. Her career depends on her looks, and her skin is magnified thousands of times on the big screen. Every little freckle would show.

  40. Betty says:

If I had the porcelain Irish skin of American born Aussie Nicole Kidman, I’d be afraid of the sun, too. Us blue eye, lighter air peeps need to avoid it at all costs. I haven’t avoided it as much as Nicole but…THe only thing weird about her is that she married that wacko, gay scientologist, Tom Cruise.

  41. Bec says:

Has everyone forgotten that Kidman lives in Australia? Not exactly a cool climate, yet I see photos of her out and about all of the time.

My guess is, she just didn’t like India.

  42. Stuff says:

I was 18 years old and a natural blonde with fair skin. I went to the Jersey shore with my Mom-in-law on a very overcast day and was under the umbrella the whole time. I never went in the water, I came down with sun poison and had one heck of a burn. So good for N.K.Not only that but people who are sun worshippers and love sitting in the sun end up with dry wrinkled skin and have a face that looks like a road map.

  43. Dorothy says:

It is not being extreme when you have been diagnoised with malignant melanoma. Stage 1 and 2 are highly curable if caught early as Nicoles was, once you have been diagnosed you have to stay on top of it and stay out of the sun and keep covered up when you are out in the sun. It spreads fast and is deadly with no cure at stage 3 and 4. There are treatments to prolong recurrence at late stage. Use sun screen. Get checked once a year. Melanoma Monday in May every year there are dermatologist who do free screenings. I’m stage 3b with 40% chance of being alive from date found, and have lymphedema from the cancer spreading into lymph nodes. Nicole is smart for staying on top of it!

  44. Nikka says:

    Dont be such haters

  45. BlueSkies says:

Look, Nicole Kidman is probably a good person but she has basically sold her soul, all of it, to the devil. Her marriages are fake and everything about her is fake because she didn’t live her life as who she is supposed to be. We all know now the Tom Cruise situation but she just used him to get ahead. It’s really sad that she believes in that old Hitcockian ideal of Hollywood beauty. She ain’t Tippi Hedren. She is basically telling us that being a freckled, frizzy haired ginge is wrong and it is not. It is so refreshing. Look at Cameron Diaz/barrymore post. Everyone trying to be the classic blonde. She could have been the beauty standard for her type but she went and ruined it just like Michael Jackson.

  46. K McFarlane says:

Nicole’s natural hair colour is actually blonde. She’s admitted as much in interviews.

I’m not aware of her ever having had a melanoma, Dorothy? She was extremely freckly as a teenager. I think she just had peels and lasers and wants to keep the porcelain effect by staying out of the sun. She’s always been fairly religious about it. Even in an Australian summer, she goes for runs wearing a long sleeved top and a cap.

  47. lola says:

Nicole was always a ‘natural’ beauty IMO but I don’t like what she’s done to herself post-T.C. split. That recent washed-out flaxen blonde look is NOT for her – makes her look ghastly pale. LOVE her with her natural red hair color and with soft curls framing her face. HATE the ‘skinned-back’ severe school-marm hairstyles she’s been sporting over the last couple of years. They make her hair appear much thinner and extra sparse.

  48. spiceh says:

No one besides me remember pictures of Nicole Kidman going out under the sun before? Ever? She was probably just being cautious with the blazing hot sun in India. I’m 24, and I already try not to get outside and being under the sun from 10 am – 5 pm. Whoever said that you need vitamin D, well you can get it in early morning when the UV light is not that harmful.
