Jessica Biel makes musical theater debut - includes video

Jessica “I’m too beautiful” Biel made her singing debut in a three-night performance in a concert version of “Guys at Dolls” at the Hollywood Bowl in LA this weekend. The Los Angeles Times gave the show, and Biel, high praise, saying that she was “glowing with an untrammeled radiance” and calling her duet with Brian Stokes Mitchell “lovely.” Commenters on the LA Times‘ site who saw the show said that it was a lot of fun and that Biel did a great job. Radar Online even reports that Biel got a standing ovation, lead by her boyfriend, Justin Timberlake:

Jessica Biel wowed the audience with her singing chops Friday night at the opening of Guys and Dolls and her boyfriend Justin Timberlake was there to cheer her on.

It was a bit of role reversal for the sexy couple with Jessica doing the singing and grabbing the spotlight. RadarOnline.com spotted Justin arriving five minutes before the show started and sitting in a box with three friends at the Hollywood Bowl. He watched Jessica sing the lead role of Mission Leader Sarah Brown on stage.

Justin was an enthusiastic boyfriend - he led the standing ovation at the end of the show and spent an hour backstage with Jessica after her performance.

Bringing not only sexy back but also chivalry, Justin drove his leading lady home after her performance. Sources tell RadarOnline.com that Justin will be at the rest of Jessica’s performances this weekend.

Biel told reporters that she loved working on the musical as it terrified yet challenged her, and that she would be thrilled do a stint on Broadway. Biel hasn’t put out many hit movies recently, and her last film, Powder Blue, got panned and went straight to DVD. She has a lot of films in development, though, according to IMDB. Things might turn around for Biel’s film career, or she could easily get more theater work. There are undoubtedly plenty of productions that would be thrilled to have her despite her lack of experience on stage.

  1. I find her talentless and not that attractive, but whatever, I guesss some find her to be both.

  2. Katie Holmes, move over.
This one at the least projects some joie de vivre.

  4. The I’m too beautiful thing is annoying, but I’m happy genuinely happy for her - she does seem like she tries hard, certainly harder than Lohan!

  6. I was impressed with that little snippet. I think she’d be good on Broadway. And I love her honest exhuberance about it. I think that comes through in her performance too.

  7. They certainly picked Sarah’s easiest song as an example. I’d like to hear how she sounded on ‘If I Were a Bell’ opr ‘I’ll Know’. She has such a low speaking voice I’d be surprised if she could hit those notes.

The speaking voice isn’t a factor. I have a very low speaking voice, but sing in a very high soprano. When someone’s hiring, he doesn’t care if you sound like Harvey Firestein, as long as you can skate up to those descant peaks.

  9. Wow, her mouth kinda ruins her but the dark hair really brings out her Native American side. She can wear any color hair and pull it off.

  11. Meh, she looks hot, sounds…OK. I think I would actually really like her(I don’t mean in this particular play, I mean in general) if I didn’t keep reading all those “I’m too awesome” quotes lol

Considering some of you people think the Jonas Brothers , the cast of High School Musical and Miley Cyrus are the shizzbomb, you need to re-evaluate who sounds like what. She can at least dance and sing at the same time unlike Robo-Katie.

  15. Grex, you got it. It’s always easy to sit behind a keyboard and play the critic. I think she sounds fine, looks fine and did a fine job. Good for her.

  17. I kept looking at all the women in the picture of her in the white dress, trying to figure out which one she was. I thought the woman in the white dress was Asian so Jessica was a woman in the back.
She looks very feminemie. I know I didn’t spell that correctly, but I am tired.
